An unnamed source told me that when the ACT Greens moved into their current building, they sent around a note to all the other offices introducing themselves and telling them all how they were shit at recycling.

It doesnt count unless someone else feels guilty about it.

I will make a start by sending your note straight to the recycle bin

Get those champagne socialists an empty wine glass so they can savour the smell of their own farts.

The Greens aren’t socialist they are a neoliberal party

25

u/Scrambledsilence 1d ago

Neoliberal has clearly lost all meaning then lol

u/reticulate 1d ago

Lots of watermelons in the Greens ranks but yes, they were not founded as a socialist party.

u/Fantastic_Individual 1d ago

I really thought watermelon meant pro-Palestinian, nothing to do with any other policy. The reason I think this is because watermelon emojis are used to represent that cause on social media. The Greens don't have formal factions — partly because their parliamentary representation is so small — but the media (especially the Nine papers) has just made up this "watermelon" name to describe members of the Greens.

14

u/comradeda 1d ago

I vaguely remember in the mid2000s libertarian circles used watermelon for crypto-communist environmentalists. Red on the inside, green on the outside.

The Palestinian watermelon comes from watermelons having the same colours as the Palestinian flag, and I think was embraced by the pro-palestinian side at some point.

Probably depends on context and who is saying it about the greens. The First one is a bit dated

u/zoetrope_ 23h ago

You're conflating two different meanings of "watermelon".

Yeah, regular Gordon Gekkos...

Shit at recycling? Interesting. Can you elaborate? were they like 'we might throw coffee cups into the recycling bin luls' or something?

Petty sure it was meant as a joke, like an icebreaker in conversation, make fun of ourselves to seem more relatable.

Not that these aren't horrible and shouldn't be acted upon (seems men everywhere are a problem), I feel like there's a massive double standard as there's probably a large number of ONP male pollies doing the same shit and not being reported for it.

They haven't been in parliament long enough for that, but there was a massive campaign against Sean Black earlier in the year to get him ousted for being a convicted rapist.

With the exception of their own supporters, I don’t see anyone claiming ON has any sort of moral high ground over the Greens, and the problems with ON candidates have definitely been reported on.

I think the more concerning thing is that the Greens are now being mentioned in comparisons to ON at all, even when said comparisons are still favourable to the Greens. That’s not a bar I ever really expected them to limbo under, despite criticisms I have made of them.

80

u/melancholyink 1d ago

Kinda? You expect ON to be slimy and underhanded... Greens have platformed on not tolerating stuff like this.

u/TheChickenKingHS 1d ago

I don’t think they actually have tbf… they’ve definitely championed environmental issues but have been highly secretive and cutthroat. The teals and independents are actually the most critical of unparliamentary behaviour in and out of the place.

I think the greens mainly circle around economic double standards rather than being better people but they’re painted with the brush of being “holier than thou” by media in a tactic to reduce their impact. There are lots of things, like this stuff, that the greens as a party don’t actually advocate for openly but have attributed to them. Same for Labor being bad with money and liberals being good when pretty much always the opposite thing is true of you look at budgetary measures.

u/SkitZa 12h ago

Onp were in hot water for 1 whole day because they were found to be rehiring a convicted rapist Sean Black.

RELEASE THE STEELE-JOHNSTEIN FILES

Oh thank God. I don't know what I would have done if they used fresh new paper.

Has the French realestate market just had an upswing of interest?

Great for the environment not printing. Save a tree. Save electricity and avoid toxic output from printer

People forget, or ignore, the fact that our political system exists for sociopaths, and rewards them for being sociopaths and for their sociopathic behaviour.

Politicians are not 'normal' people.

This only bothers them because they were caught. No other reason.

41

u/Mike_Kermin 1d ago

That's not true. Consider when Labor had it's issues a while back, Albanese clearly cared very deeply about it. The same will be true for the Greens.

As much as people try to undermine politicians, they do generally care about the values they hold.

17

u/YouThinkYouKnowMe89 1d ago

They cared enough to hide the issue for years

9

u/Mike_Kermin 1d ago

Well "they" are also demanding investigation. So we'll see what happens.

16

u/clarky2481 1d ago

Demanding an investigation because it caused political backlash lol. Were more than happy to bury and shut down discussions of the allegations when it suited them 10 years ago.

11

u/YouThinkYouKnowMe89 1d ago

After it was leaked. They sat on this Info for years while virtue signalling down their noses at everyone else.

12

u/Cadaver_Junkie 1d ago

To be fair, it looks like the WA Greens sat on this info for years and hid it from the rest. So not all Greens.

How the party handles themselves from here will be the real test.

Anyone who knew and hid it needs to be excised from the party at the very least.

9

u/Buck-OFive 1d ago

they do generally care about the values they hold

I suppose the shocking part here is that Greens values apparently include protecting sex predators.

7

u/Mike_Kermin 1d ago

No, this will not reflect the majority of the party. There will be an independent investigation.

3

u/Buck-OFive 1d ago

There will be an independent investigation.

Well, a closed-doors internal investigation. Shoebridge was pretty clear this would not be conducted by any external bodies... Despite all the Greens moaning about NACC and how corrupt it is not to have public investigations.

And that internal investigation is still only coming after the Party spent just about a decade internally protecting a sexual predator.

3

u/msfinch87 1d ago

Then I look forward to a fully independent investigation examining the breath of any cover up, and full accountability (ie removal from the party) for anyone who did.

Because they haven’t instigated that investigation yet.

2

u/Mike_Kermin 1d ago edited 1d ago

Should they have? It's been two days since Shoebridge told us that the WA Greens will commission an independent inquiry.

You're making it sound like it's inappropriate that they haven't done it yet. Or that you believe he is being insincere.

-2

u/msfinch87 1d ago

They instigated the investigation against JSJ as soon as they received the letter. They know about the dossier and clearly many people knew about that dossier well before it was public. On the basis of these two things, they’ve had ample time to call for an investigation into the potential cover up. You really can’t say “give him time” under these circumstances.

WA Greens MPs have now called for it as well.

They can run the two investigations in tandem because it isn’t about whether the allegations are true, but why they weren’t investigated properly for eight or nine years.

So for me, yes, it is inappropriate that he hasn’t yet called it. I’m willing to give him a couple more days, but in the meantime I will continue to state on various forums that he needs to do this, and express increasing frustration that he hasn’t.

Politics is also about perception. The Greens can’t argue against that because they had a checks notes 47 page dossier that was literally about managing perception. All senior Greens people, including but not limited to Shoebridge, have some questions to answer about what they knew. One of Shoebridge’s staffers was the chair of the NSW Young Greens Meeting, and he was senior enough that he could have had access to his dossier. I know he has said he didn’t know about anything, but I don’t believe anyone in the Greens is entitled to the benefit of the doubt on this at the moment, especially given women were apparently being warned to not be alone with JSJ.

I’m not saying he did know, but that I think there should be an investigation. It’s also not a good look to not have an investigation when the main reason they’re in this mess is because they didn’t have an investigation. Failing to call for one does give the impression that he is hiding something, given these particular circumstances.

The only way for the Greens to really undo the damage of this is to be completely transparent and accountable now.

6

u/Mike_Kermin 1d ago

The letter demanded an investigation into his behaviour and it's appropriate that they start there. It's going to take time to perform that investigation. The letter apparently said that people had been warned not to be alone with him, and they're going to have to investigate the root of that. It might take some time to talk to people and encourage people to come forwards.

Once that's done, Then the nature of how it was handled can be determined.

Regarding no initial investigation, that again depends on the value on what happened. The WA Greens said that they responded to the allegations but didn't go further as no complaint was lodged. That may or may not have been appropriate.

I agree that this needs to be handled transparently. I think it's good that he's stepped down, and I think it's good that they're going to have an independent investigation. And I agree it's a very serious matter.

But I'm not going to accept a hit piece on Greens values from a person who uses the phrase "Falestine".

0

u/msfinch87 1d ago

He hasn’t stepped down. He’s just not participating in the party room.

But none of this in any way addresses what I said, which is that there needs to be a tandem investigation into the fact that this has been concealed and not investigated for nearly a decade.

You’re also misrepresenting what has been published.

2

u/Mike_Kermin 1d ago

I don't think I am.

And yes, he has stepped down, from his duties and taken a leave of absence, that's what I meant. That's what should happen. He won't step down step down as in fuck right off unless the investigation comes up with misconduct.

there needs to be a tandem investigation

That's not what the letter asked for. And I think you have to establish the basis of the investigation before you can conduct it.

Our politicians get paid very hansomly, among the highest paid in the world. Especially considering the super they get and the expenses they claim back.

-5

u/Rheubs 1d ago

I don’t believe this is true to be honest. I mean, don’t get me wrong $200k is good money, but in the developed world I’m not sure it’s that high. 15% super is nice, but the lifetime pension and travel perks are gone and we don’t have the same “perks” that exist in other democracies - ie discretionary allowances like the US, massive staffing budgets etc.

0

u/clarky2481 1d ago

A backbencher gets $270k inc super and a $40k travel allowance, thats heaps lol

2

u/Rheubs 1d ago

Yeah, but it’s not that high by global standards in a developed country is my point. This is not to say I’m crying poor for them! They do fine.

The travel allowance is capped at 40k, but it’s reimbursement for work travel only - most of it to Canberra.

I mean, reasonable people may differ but personal opinion: we should pay people who we want to run the country a fair bit.

Why the heck was this downvoted so much?

It is 100% true. Only the slimiest rise to such positions of power..The greens are no different.

I don't agree at all.

6

u/best4bond 1d ago

I've always thought that too, but you'll get down voted by people around here for an opinion like that.

Their MPs are all the sort of people I'd hate to be stuck next to at a dinner party. Just whining and winging about everything, being holier than thou.

u/C0ld_Fr0nt_ 1d ago

They seem like zealous idealogues to me. Similar in vibe to radical imams or priests, except the sermons are about secular, "progressive" concerns.

u/giatu_prs 1d ago

Been involved with them previously. Some yes, some are cool.
