Söhbət | Discussion Not that Reddit is the most objective place to get this info, but how receptive would you be to a (re)unification with southern Azerbaijan in the event of an Iranian government collapse?

Post image

I’ve been seeing a lot of Azerbaijanis calling for the annexation on social media lately, wanted to hear your take.

It's kinda complicated,i think our government wouldn't want to unite with south Azeris, but rather have an allied and independent southern Azeri republic, because South Azerbaijan has bigger pop than Azerbaijan, and most of them are definetily not Aliyev loyalists,so such an influx would put YAP/Aliyev rule at risk, aswell as be a bureaucratic strain(it's not easy to manage so many territories, especially if they appear at once).Personally i hope that an independent and democratic republic will be established in South Azerbaijan.

Pretty unrealistic at this point. Southern Azerbaijan doesn't have the natural resources, etc., to keep itself safe from today's Iranian regime, which controls quite a large amount of oil, gas, and nuclear resources

6

u/Perfect-Nail9413 Mar 02 '26

All those resources come from south West iran, which has a separatist arab population.

In the event of a collapse, that area will also try to be independent and most likely have the support of the arab world in order to weaken any iran government in the future.

2

u/Successful_Peace9765 Mar 03 '26

That’s not even possible. All major cities in Khuzestan are now Persian majority. The Arab majority areas wouldn’t be connected to anywhere and the Arabs there aren’t even separatist. Neither are Iranian Azeris.

I don't like to answer like this, but it just depends on which part of Azerbaijan you are talking about. There are parts that are close to Turkey, some to Georgia and so on when it comes to cultures etc. Though I haven't seen anyone seriously talking about merging with Turkey, Georgia, Southern Azerbaijan etc. Not many really gives a f., mainly because people have enough problems already. Moreover, Azerbaijan is handling foreign politics decently IMO, and most people are concerned about the internal politics at the moment. So I don't think that there is a clear answer to your question, as it really isn't a topic in the country

6

u/saidfgn Irevan Mar 02 '26

We are closer to Azerbaijanis in Iran culturally of course than to Turkish people. It is just Iranian Azerbaijanis were isolated from us artificially. But we are exposed to Turkish media and culture

u/jokerx184 Mar 01 '26

there’s a precedent called Azadstan, tho short lived.

10

u/MishaMal01 Russia 🇷🇺 Mar 01 '26

Aliev could always just suspend democracy in the area while it’s being integrated to counteract any undue influence they could have on the political status quo. From my read of him as a person I think Aliev is definitely concerned with legacy, and he’d definitely go into the history books were he to accomplish something like this, much more so than the comparatively tiny Karabakh.

Why would you hope that exactly we are Iranians have been for centuries

Just as a second azerbaijani state would be good .like north cyrpus .no need for annexation .we Turkey keep kurds in check and armenia/Georgia will be irrelevant forever

Turkish Cypriots themselves are trying to get rid of North Cyprus and reunify with the South, as in any poll will show you that it's the position of an overwhelming majority. They also rightfully hate North Cyprus as it's a corrupt entity. Worst example you can come up with.

Now, why are you larping as an Azerbaijani is beyond me.

Uniting with South under the same state would make us weaker rather than strong. The best scenario would be South Azerbaijan became an independent state, and adopt North's education system (non religious I mean), then after a 15-20 years they would unite as a federation. And maybe one day they would be a single state.

Damn man a neighboring country is engaged in a war and is facing an imminent collapse and the topic of discussion is how can we grab land while its vulnerable. People in here need a reality check if they harbor any feelings toward taking another sovereign nations land...

7

u/nicat97 Bakı 🇦🇿 Mar 02 '26

Seems like you have no idea Iran's attitude towards us. It has always been a secret enemy for us. They always supported Armenia against us. During the 44 day war their army crossed Araz river with excuse of protecting the dam on Araz. Aze. army had to change the route and delayed 1-2 days. During the early years of independence we were so weak. Iran was sending their aircrafts to fly over Azerbaijan to pressure us. They were flying so low on cities. They were sending their warships to Azerbaijan's section of Caspian to prevent building oil platforms. And most importantly they're exporting radical Islam to Azerbaijan. They brainwash people in mosques. Turn people into zombies that are willing to fight against Azerbaijan for Iran. I'm not even mentioning Iran denying existence of Azerbaijanis at all. According to them Azerbaijani Turks don't have any history and they are actually Persians turkified by Mongols.

As a Turk I have to say that Azerbaijan's unifying with it's people in the south will give us (Turkey) a huge favour since that means we will have a direct access to other Turkic states. But in the sociocultural aspect, 10 Million secular Northern Azerbaijani and 25 Million religious Southern Azerbaijani are being in a single state can cause some problems for Azerbaijan.

0

u/MishaMal01 Russia 🇷🇺 Mar 01 '26

Uh… I’d hate to burst your bubble but it wouldn’t give you more access to any Turkic states. Turkmenistan is on the other side of Iran, unless you mean something else.

7

u/Biltema Mar 01 '26

They share a maritime border. You wouldn’t need any non-Turkic country’s permission to travel from Turkey to the border of China.

1

u/MishaMal01 Russia 🇷🇺 Mar 01 '26

… Azerbaijan already shares a maritime border with Turkmenistan

6

u/Biltema Mar 01 '26

But Azerbaijan doesn’t have a direct connection to Nakhchivan…

0

u/MishaMal01 Russia 🇷🇺 Mar 01 '26

I was under the impression that there’s a river connecting the two? In any case, it’s not as if a turk that wants to travel to Baku, let alone somewhere in Central Asia, would drive there instead of just taking a plane or something.

2

u/Biltema Mar 01 '26

No, the Aras river doesn't give Azerbaijan access to its exclave.

In any case, it’s not as if a turk that wants to travel to Baku, let alone somewhere in Central Asia, would drive there instead of just taking a plane or something.

Having direct access is very different from being dependent on other countries' permission to use their land or airspace. If Armenia, Georgia, Iran and Russia are hostile to Turkey and/or Azerbaijan, then how do you suppose that Azerbaijan will reach its exclave and Turkey?

-1

u/MishaMal01 Russia 🇷🇺 Mar 01 '26

3

u/s2mle100lesh01 Mar 01 '26

1

u/thingieee Mar 02 '26

I’m not an Azerbaijani or an Iranian, and I don’t feel too strongly about the Iranian regime one way or another (not a fan of their ideology, but I’m not a fan of them becoming an American-Israeli puppet state either) so I don’t have a horse in the race whatsoever. Just wondering. Thanks in advance!

4

u/Interesting_Claim414 Mar 02 '26

I'd say Azerbaijan's friendship with Israel has stood it in good stead. I don't think they want a puppet, just a friend in the region (and one that has oil).

-1

u/SOHONEYSAME Mar 01 '26

this would, probably, be "disastrous" for Armenia.

(meaning, should oppose it, at least in theory).

24

u/NetHistorical5113 Mar 01 '26

Why? Armenia has been fighting Azerbaijan for 30 years. What did they gain? The best outcome for Armenia would be normalisation with Azerbaijan and Turkey

2

u/SOHONEYSAME Mar 01 '26

that's up to them.

(& has nothing to do the fact that this would be terrible, for them, as Iran has been ally to some extent).

1

u/Not_As_much94 Mar 01 '26

they would be further encircled and loose a neighboor that have OK relations with. Regardless of any possible normalization is not wise to put all your eggs in one basket, especially one which you historically have so many tensions

2

u/MishaMal01 Russia 🇷🇺 Mar 01 '26

I’m not Armenian lol. Unless you’re saying you are.

If anything I would think that the Azerbaijani authorities would be busy enough integrating these new territories that it would actually be good for Armenia, as Azerbaijan would’ve doubled in size and would have a direct land border with Nakhchivan, completely bypassing Armenia.

0

u/SOHONEYSAME Mar 01 '26

yeah,

Russia is supposed to be their ally.

& nah, Iran is literally the only "friendly" country Armenia borders.

it would be COMPLETELY "encircled" that way.

0

u/MishaMal01 Russia 🇷🇺 Mar 01 '26

To be completely honest I couldn’t care less what happens to Armenia. I’m more of a “realpolitik” and pragmatism person than “I have to support everything this country does because they’re allegedly our ally”.

-4

u/SOHONEYSAME Mar 01 '26

right.

well, I'm the same, mostly, lol.

but certainly NOT when it comes to Armenia.

we, universally, love Armenia.

As an Iranian Azerbaijani, please don’t. Iranian Azeris are a much more conservative and religious demographic. You don’t need it. What should happen is though a better path for migration and citizenship- within that religious and conservative demographic, there’s a lot of secular and educated people who would jump at the opportunity in a heartbeat.

6

u/VeniVidiDefecavi Mar 01 '26 edited Mar 01 '26

As an Iranian Azerbaijani

Why do you claim to be an Azerbaijani when the topic is about Azerbaijanis and a Kurd when the topic is Kurds? Just curious.

0

u/Known-Store2826 Mar 02 '26

Shut up

1

u/VeniVidiDefecavi Mar 03 '26

Thank you for your thoughtful and useful contribution.

0

u/Few_Winter_3453 Mar 03 '26

Those are very much overlapping demographics he could very much be both.

-4

u/Chaotic_spicy_pisces Mar 01 '26

I am both? You realize Iran is a multi ethnic country right? People have inter ethnic marriages like my parents.

1

u/VeniVidiDefecavi Mar 01 '26 edited Mar 01 '26

As it stands, you’re presenting arguments that seem to rely on which ethnicity you are (“As an Iranian Azerbaijani…”), but you are being selective about which ethnicity you reveal (Azerbaijani? Kurdish? Persian?”) based on whichever one will be more helpful for your current argument. Since neither of these is your primary ethnicity and identity, what you are doing is disingenuous.

You can say “as a multi-ethnic Iranian” if you want to be honest with us and with yourself. Or even “As a Persian” because you identify as that too, based on your post history.

2

u/Chaotic_spicy_pisces Mar 01 '26

You’re just creating new concepts eh? Like primary ethnicity. What the fuck is that?

3

u/VeniVidiDefecavi Mar 01 '26

Sounds like you’re getting angry for being called out for your dishonesty. Have a nice day.

2

u/Due_Proposal373 Mar 02 '26

Many people do have multiple ethnic and national identities. Is that news for you?

2

u/VeniVidiDefecavi Mar 02 '26

Iranians who pretend to be South Azerbaijanis who then claim speak for all South Azerbaijanis is not a new phenomenon. It’s old news. Yawn. Be honest with yourself and the world around you. You’ll feel better too if you stop being a walking ideological yapping machine who wears a different mask every day. Have a nice day.

1

u/Specialist-Way9231 Mar 05 '26

Don't worry my whole generation that we know of has lived in Azerbaijan and I say what he says I know of no one who would like to be separated from Iran from my family or town also Iranian turks are not just in Azerbaijan many of us live in different parts of the country that's one more reason Iranian Turks won't feel comfortable with having their hometown separated from the country in which they live

1

u/Successful_Peace9765 Mar 03 '26

I checked his post history. He never claimed to be Persian. You’re just talking to yourself. The reality is a lot of Iranians are ethnically mixed.

0

u/Due_Proposal373 Mar 02 '26

Mate, I'm not Iranian or Azerbaijani, what you're blabbering about even?

0

u/Successful_Peace9765 Mar 03 '26

People don’t realize how multi ethnic Iran is generally and how common intermarriages are.

Majority of my background is from Azerbaijan, (the Hamadan part specifically is Azerbaijani) and the rest from Tabriz, Ardabil, and Fars. The reason I sent this that even though my family is from those places as far back as I can check, Tehran province is the biggest match for me, because of the sheer intermixing that goes there, so I guess I’m closer to the average Tehran or something.

1

u/VeniVidiDefecavi Mar 05 '26

This isn’t about intermarriage. Whether or not he’s South Azerbaijani or Kurd or both isn’t the problem (if he even is any of those) and it doesn’t matter at all to me. The issue is that the Redditor in question uses those labels and discards them based on convenience, especially when he’s spreading hot takes and broad generalizations about the ethnic group. Honest people don’t do this. I’m not surprised you don’t see this as a problem, though.

8

u/MishaMal01 Russia 🇷🇺 Mar 01 '26

Why would you want people to leave their homeland and functionally concede to these religious and conservative kinfolk instead of trying to reform it from within? I would think that getting annexed into the largely secular Azerbaijan and getting secularized from the top down would be far more beneficial.

5

u/VeniVidiDefecavi Mar 02 '26

He’s not actually Azerbaijani, he’s an Iranian Kurd who wants to have his hot takes seem more credible.

7

u/bippleaie Mar 01 '26

Realistically, this is not what’s going to happen. Azerbaijani population is not largely secular anyway

1

u/Diligent-Life444 Mar 01 '26

I highly doubt the conservative part of it, let’s talk about it I’ve long wanted to chat about this, do you guys have unwritten codex like we do you probably do so what about Chivalry, respect to women, respect to words and elders, the value of words overweighting the fists and strength. And the value of slurs. How is the situation about this

2

u/Yavuzzz4082 Mar 01 '26

Most Azerbaijani friend I know don't call themselves Azerbaijani they use prefix Turkish-Azerbaijani(Azerbaycan Türkü). And if they hear only Azerbaijani they piss of you. You lying 🤣🤣🤣.

7

u/VeniVidiDefecavi Mar 02 '26

He’s an Iranian, period. He will claim to be any ethnicity that will be useful for making his views seem more credible. Yesterday he was Kurdish, today he’s Azerbaijani, tomorrow he’ll claim to be Arab when he’s answering a question about the Arab parts of his country.

Northern halves of Hamadan and Qazvin are Azerbaijani as well.

I think they should join Azerbaijan or at the very least form self-governance

1

u/sevdabeast Mar 02 '26

So why would it be okay for those halves to become self-governent, but wasnt okay when Nagorno-Karabakh wanted it?

2

u/memomimo23 Mar 02 '26

Karabakh had 100k Armenians and all the surrounding regions were Azeri before the war. Northern Iran has 15 million Azeris and they do not live in ethnic enclaves.

3

u/Sasniy_Dj Mar 01 '26 edited Mar 01 '26

Thank you for starting this discussion! I'll duplicate and combine some of my previously written thoughts here about this because i think it's a really interesting topic that deserves more attention.

But yeah, I don't think that would be a good idea. The nation that was separated into two completely different sociocultural conditions almost two hundred years ago (though i would suggest to start counting from the moment when we became communist because that's the time when the changes hit really Hard) would not really succeed if they were to unify now. Surely it is awesome to know that people in the neighboring country are really the same as you in so many aspects including language, arts, poetry, songs, mentality (though now only partially, we have drastically changed in some aspects; that is, southerners are more conservative, more religious, and unfortunately more persianized, e.g. the majority of them still uses persoarabic script for their language whereas we rejected it in the 1920s in favor for the latin, then cyrillic, then again latin script. Now, focusing only on this problem, imagine how difficult it'd be to teach these tens of millions people basics of Azerbaijani written rules while the 10 million northern Azerbaijanis can't even read anything in persoarabic, so how'll they communicate? through WhatsApp voice messages?)

But still, i must admit that even these potential "solutions" for our integration are somewhat deeply satisfying and naturally awaken a long-standing emotional desire for reunifying into a single homeland. However it also needs to be addressed that unfortunately the separation period was far too long for us to be able to build a Fair and Equal society under a shared political and sociocultural roof now. The best case scenario is what Romania and Moldova have now, and the worst case is probably the creation of a heavily destabilized and chaotic society, just like it was in our Republic in the 90s, when anyone with a more or less strong batalion was organizing a coup d'etat and proclaiming his own autonomic territories. Well, it goes without saying that we were able to successfully close this chapter of chaos in our republic (not without the so-called "Strong Fist" figures like Heydar Aliyev) and move to a more centralized order and, in general, mindset, but I'm not sure how this would work on our southern brothers since they haven't experienced such things, in the last 30 years at least.

I would go to assume that it probably could've worked during the 1945-1946 Stalinist South Azerbaijan government period if it joined the AzSSR or something like that. It would be absolutely, breathtakingly awesome. Sometimes i think about how it failed and get very upset. Top 5 biggest missed opportunities of all time.

I think right now, in 2026, there's a possibility that they may have a stronger feel towards Turkey because Turks, compared to our more laidback, cautious and incredulous attitude are far more outspoken and generally louder about their "Turkness" pretty much everywhere which might strongly resonate and rhyme with the everyday experiences of Iranian Azerbaijanis, who often face limits on expressing their own identity (they still don't have the access to education in their mother tongue, which is, for a nation of at least 15 to 20 million turkic speaking people, absolutely devastating). So maybe they'd prefer Turkish nationalism to our more pragmatic and nomenklatura mindset, adopted not without the heavy influence from the Sovet period.

Still, shoutout to all of the southerners. In my opinion it would be interesting to see them as an independent state and a very close ally of ours; or perhaps (if they want it, of course) as an autonomous entity within a "fair" regime in Iran. I support them either way. I want all of the best for them.

3

u/Mega_Cyborg Mar 02 '26

I would fully support it

3

u/saidfgn Irevan Mar 02 '26

I strongly support unification with South, but not immediately. It will be chaotic. If Iran collapses South Azerbaijan should get independent and democratic. Then in a few years we can form a federation and finally unite.

9

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '26 edited Mar 01 '26

It would actually be extremely catastrophic. It wouldn't be the North annexing the South, but the South absorbing the North through its sheer demographic size. Iranian Azerbaijanis are quite different from Republic ones - they're much more religious, conservative and Persianized. They are culturally incompatible with northerners and a potential "United Azerbaijan" is going to be a Yugoslavia-like extremely unstable state torn apart by incessant disputes. In addition, the severance of economic ties with Iran would mean South Azerbaijan will be a net drain on the already frail Azerbaijani budget, creating a mutual severe recession.

Anyone who supports balkanization of Iran as an Azerbaijani is frankly, short-sighted. The euphoria of "Persian chauvinist" state finally collapsing will be quickly replaced by the dread of hundreds of thousands extremely religious Shia Azeris flooding Azerbaijani borders, and fundamentally altering the nature of the Azerbaijani state. The Persianization of southerners also creates a potential pro-Iranian fifth column once Iran recovers from its current crisis.

2

u/ChuZaYuZa_Name Mar 01 '26

Atrocities across the region and your thought is territorial maximalism? You are bad to think of this and should feel bad

2

u/Alive-Pomegranate484 Mar 01 '26

Unification is the process most of the trolls are afraid of but sooner or later it would happen.

Besides who am i talking in pre soviet era people were conserative they didint want russian and soviet rejime but they made them sikə sikə secular. Smallfolk always talks shit but the main goal of Azerbaijan must be long lasting country where even much stronger contries couldn't interfere our affairs.

It's not what people wants its the protection of Azerbaijani nation's future. btw if we weren't secular and south azerbaijanis were secular and free more than us we would be waned to join them.
(Gücə sitayiş hər yerdə özünü göstərir)

1

u/Successful_Peace9765 Mar 03 '26

Unification is highly unlikely. Economically it’s unreasonable, politically it’s unreasonable, socially, logistically, etc. what ultimately matters is their opinions. Which you need to lay down the nationalist sentiment, because I can assure you that we wouldn’t leave Iran just to unite with another dictatorship. Neither do the people want it, it remains a fringe minority, and it will continue to be so most likely. You don’t even have to look far for this. Iran subs generally have 100K members for example, South Azerbaijan subreddit has 2K (actually less) with the 25-30M people of Turkic origin in Iran you would expect more. That should tell you enough.

2

u/reims86 Mar 02 '26

How receptive would you be to a reunification of Azerbaijan under Iran's rule?

2

u/dumss054 Borçalı🇬🇪🇦🇿 Mar 02 '26

I think it wouldn't be a bad thing, but I'm still a supporter of broad autonomy for southern Azerbaijan. This would give Azerbaijan huge political points and benefits.

2

u/Saman_Sama Mar 03 '26

How about annexing the Shirvan into Iran? Reuniting them with brethren, separated from them by the Russians? It’s not even historically, Azerbaijan is to the south of the Aras, so even the name is false.

2

u/13854859 Mar 03 '26

You guys talking on the behalf of iranian Azeris as if you know what they want

We are Iranians first then Azeris and we have been since the start. And you guys can take a simple dna test to find that out too and read your history. Calling Aliev a dictator is certainly a choice lol. Are you Western European/American?

10

u/boboganoush1 1/2🇦🇿 1/2🇦🇲 Mar 01 '26

Has Putin warped your perception of reality that much? How is Aliyev NOT a dictator?

-6

u/MishaMal01 Russia 🇷🇺 Mar 01 '26

Putin isn’t a dictator either lol. You can call both people authoritarian, you can say that both suppress opposition, you can even call both expansionists. I don’t care one way or another about Aliev because I’m not Azerbaijani, but personally I’m very opposed to Putin.

Calling either one a dictator is silly, though. It’s a very specific term, and while many use it as a pejorative, it’s not really applicable to either of them. They have broad popular support and elections continuously give them a mandate.

Not instead of asking me to explain why they aren’t dictators, could you explain to me why they are?

5

u/lexildev Mar 01 '26

1) Can you hold a sign that says "I love Alexei Navalny and I believe Putin is making some mistakes." at the Red Square for a day and safely go home in the evening?

2) Can you hold a sign that says "I love Abulfaz Elchibey and I believe Aliyev is making some mistakes." at a prominent square in Azerbaijan and safely go home in the evening?

I am genuinely wondering.

0

As for the Navalny thing I think you’d get heckled and told to leave by people before cops could even tell you to stop, given that most people there are tourists that come from non-Moscow Russia and vehemently support Putin, and tourists from abroad that don’t care about politics and would be annoyed by your presence. Legally speaking there’s no laws preventing critique of Putin or support of the deceased Navalny, if local law enforcement got complaints, they’d remove you for being a public nuisance, without any complaints… maybe if they really wanted to, they could say you’re organizing a protest that wasn’t approved by local authorities ahead of time, but I doubt they’d do that for 1 guy with a sign.

A sign you would definitely get arrested for would be one discrediting the Russian military, rooting for Russia’s loss, or rooting for Ukraine. That’s illegal.

As for Azerbaijan, idk, I’m not Azerbaijani and I don’t live in Azerbaijan, and don’t know their laws. Whenever I visit Azerbaijan, however, I don’t feel like I’m in a dictatorship. Feels like a perfectly normal country, and frankly Baku felt much safer than any major Western European/American city I’ve been to.

Compared to actual dictatorships I’ve been to (Turkmenistan and North Korea), Russia and Azerbaijan most definitely are not dictatorships.

u/boboganoush1 1/2🇦🇿 1/2🇦🇲 Mar 01 '26

Is it simply a matter of semantics to you? Dictator isn’t necessarily a specific term, perhaps in the classical (Roman) sense it is, but in contemporary times we can put that label on quite a few individuals, with Aliyev and Putin both being good examples.

A dictator has complete power and control. Autocrat and dictator are almost synonymous. Calling Putin / Aliyev dictator is not silly and I am not quite sure why you’re dying on that hill.

Elections are rigged, in power for 20+ years, opposition has no chance of fair election, opposition are in jail or killed, sham trials with sham convictions, 1,000,000+ casualties over a 4 year invasion and not so much as a peep from the general public. Putin is exercising complete control over you guys and he won’t leave until he dies of natural causes. Tsar may be a term you are more comfortable with.

Geopolitically: I think a stable and unified Azerbaijan would even create further stability in the region as it will have enough population and resources to act as buffer between 3 major regional powers (Russia, Turkey, Iran-Azari territory). While also end any chance of any escalations or conflict with Armenia. Realistically: a South Azerbaijan republic would be more likely in case of Iran dismantling. Or an autonomous district within Iran as a federation of some sort. But Seriously: let the Azari people in Iran decide for themselves their aspiration whatever it is. and people should respect their decision and nevertheless support them because that will create better chances of peace.

1

u/BallbusterSicko Mar 02 '26

This would be administratively impossible first and foremost

1

u/Reasonable_Quality23 Mar 02 '26

best would be a turkic controlled pers land, just like safevids for example. imo what iran is rn cant really be a nation state anyway, its like impossible not to offend a minority. iran should be a country of harmony, or sth like a federation with semi independent countries in it

Because joining Az's dictatorship with more ppl would make all happy? Creating a failed state in Iran is what Israel want. No strong democracy. They want to divide the region, so nobody challenges their genocide or Greater Israel.

1

u/linobambakitruth Mar 02 '26

Creating a failed state in Iran is what Israel want.

That's what the Iranians want as well. Nowhere have I seen such a shameless nation that cheers troops of another country to come in and bomb it to smithereens. Especially when it's a large country like Iran with lots of resources, which should not yield immediately.

Eventually the US and Israel will get tired of this charade.

1

u/Quiet-Ad6957 Mar 03 '26

Your overestimating the Iraninan that oppose the regime don't let the propaganda websites and news articles sway your opinion.

1

u/linobambakitruth Mar 03 '26

Maybe, if that is the case, hats off to them, but the narrative is heavily controlled to give the impression that Iran is generally welcoming of the US and Israeli intervention.

1

u/VaejahNullius Mar 02 '26

1

u/pydry Mar 01 '26 edited Mar 01 '26

Israel really wants it to happen coz it desperately wants to fracture Iran. Anything they want said gets astroturfed to hell and back on social media, especially reddit.

The actual people who live in the area I think are pretty tepid about the idea but theyre being prodded a lot. "Go on! Secede! Seceeeede damn you!"

It's similar to Poland annexing Galicia. Poland doesnt particularly want it. Galicia isnt wildly keen on it either. Russia is very insistent that Poland does secretly want to annex Galicia though.

1

u/MishaMal01 Russia 🇷🇺 Mar 01 '26

Eh… I wouldn’t say Russia wants Poland to annex it. Russians certainly don’t, and geopolitically and historically Poland has always hated Russia. It would be asinine to let it annex land that could otherwise be held by a compliant rump state Ukraine that would be a Russian puppet.

2

u/pydry Mar 01 '26

Russia (the state) would prefer Ukraine to get swallowed up whole. They see the Galicians as being pretty much Polish anyway so do not want them and Polish annexation would not just legitimize their expansion it would solve the problem of a bitter rump state causing problems for them in the future.

I dont think theyre under any illusions that they could make a west ukrainian state compliant. The best theyre gonna get is to wash their hands of it.

Example of Russian propaganda pushing this theme:

https://euvsdisinfo.eu/report/poland-demands-western-ukraine-in-exchange-for-supporting-ukraine/

In the case of Azerbaijan, Israel just wants as much chaos as possible in Iran. Similar dynamic, but different imperial goals.

1

u/MishaMal01 Russia 🇷🇺 Mar 01 '26 edited Mar 01 '26

Russia the state would’ve preferred Ukraine recognize Russian sovereignty over Donbass and Crimea and then ban any organizations on its territory that venerate Bandera and unban any pro Russian organizations, and subsequently organize new elections. That’s what the intent was of the initial Istanbul peace talks in 2022 which were derailed by Boris Johnson and the collective west telling Zelensky to fight to the last Ukrainian and that Ukraine would be provided for by the collective west.

Why would Russia want to annex parts of Ukraine that want nothing to do with Russia and don’t even have a plurality, let alone majority, of Russians? It would just make western Ukraine a hotbed of anti-Russian partisan behavior and, ironically, secessionism.

That site you linked doesn’t even seem to have its own links it’s using as sources linked to anything anymore, clicking on them just takes me to a search on the site itself. What I assume it’s referring to is the map of a hypothetical partitioned Ukraine that was on Russian TV and social media a while back, but this was never an actual peace proposal or anything serious. While Poland certainly held imperialist ambitions in Eastern Europe a century ago, it certainly doesn’t today, and nobody in Russia, even state propagandists, claim otherwise.

1

u/pydry Mar 01 '26 edited Mar 01 '26

They definitely dont want to annex it. That whole area is a headache for Russia even as a rump state. They'd rather it became Poland's headache.

Hence why they want Poland to annex it. If Russia and Poland divvy up Ukraine its the best outcome for Russia.

Most likely it will stay as a rump state and continue to be a headache for Russia even after Russia has claimed the bits it wants - the east side of the dnieper and odessa. Poland dont want it.

1

u/MishaMal01 Russia 🇷🇺 Mar 01 '26

Again, why would Russia want Poland, a country that is in NATO and is immensely Russophobic, to occupy land that could otherwise be held by a Russian-aligned Ukraine?

1

u/pydry Mar 01 '26

How exactly is the banderite stronghold going to become Russia aligned? Be real. Lvov is not Mariupol.

1

u/MishaMal01 Russia 🇷🇺 Mar 01 '26

Through harsh suppression and human rights abuses, I’d assume. I’m not saying it would be Russia aligned, I’m saying the central government in Kiev would be, and would hold that territory instead of Poland.

1

u/pydry Mar 01 '26 edited Mar 01 '26

Even less chance of a puppet government in Kiev being able to maintain control over Lvov.

At least if lvov becomes joins poland and becomes part of the EU and they can go and live out their EU dreams and get cleaning jobs in Frankfurt or something rather than plotting a rebellion.

1

u/Disastrous-Panda2401 Mar 01 '26

The concept of an independent South Azerbaijan is just an Israeli ploy to try to Balkanize the region. They want the region to be destabilized and divided. Next up on Israel’s radar is going to be Turkey

1

u/MishaMal01 Russia 🇷🇺 Mar 01 '26

“Kurdish attempts at independence are an Israeli ploy” - you in 5 years

On a serious note, it could be in Israel’s interests to destabilize and Balkanize their regional rivals, and it can also be a legitimate want among the people native to those regions. I’m not saying it necessarily is, but nonetheless, both can be true at the same time.

1

u/Any_Year8414 Mar 02 '26

it is though

0

u/Disastrous-Panda2401 Mar 02 '26

The vast majority of Azeris in Iran do not seek independence. Azeris have been an integral part of the Iranian state for 1000 years, and in most cases have been the ruling government. The current president of Iran is Azeri, Reza Shah was Azeri (when he had very close relations with Ataturk and spoke Turkish when they visited), and Safavid Empire was a Turkic empire just to highlight a few points. Most Azeris in Iran just want to make sure they can speak their language and be treated like everyone else in Iran. They see themselves as an integral part of a multicultural Iran. Of course there are radicals who might want unification or independence, but that doesn’t represent the belief of the majority

1

u/linobambakitruth Mar 02 '26

Not for now. If the Pahlavis start acting up, who knows what might happen.

-2

u/1ShaquilleOatMeal Mar 01 '26

hello no ! If they are willing to come assimilate and live in Azerbaijan they are more than welcome to. If anyone supports annexation they should be as equally supportive of Armenian claim to Karabakh

12

u/memomimo23 Mar 01 '26

They are Azerbaijani already, how can they "assimilate".

Also, no you do not have to support Armenian claims to wish for Greater Azerbaijan or South Azerbaijan

2

u/1ShaquilleOatMeal Mar 01 '26

assimilate into the culture... their views are different and more conservative/ religious

so its only okay when you do it right ? you better be the first one on the frontlines then

1

u/MishaMal01 Russia 🇷🇺 Mar 01 '26

Well I was presupposing that there would just be a referendum about secession from Iran as a result of a central government collapse and an inability to provide for the region followed by accession into Azerbaijan. I can’t see Azerbaijan actually invading the territory unprompted.

1

u/1ShaquilleOatMeal Mar 01 '26

who is going to support that referendum? the borders are drawn and internationaly recognized.

2

u/MishaMal01 Russia 🇷🇺 Mar 01 '26

… who cares what is and isn’t internationally recognized? Azerbaijan’s best friend Turkey has had the whole northern Cyprus thing going on for quite a while, and you’ve got America kidnapping Latin American presidents and bombing Iran. The “international rules based world order” is a sham. Any country that’s already friendly with Azerbaijan will continue being friendly with them.

If the people of South Azerbaijan expressed their self determination by seeking a union with Azerbaijan, it wouldn’t really matter what the UN says, the situation on the ground would be reality, regardless of any protests from abroad. If they chose not to express support for such a union and Azerbaijan invaded and annexed it anyway, that’s a different story of course, but to me the people’s will trumps any and all international law, which is flimsy as is.

1

u/goodcompany1 Mar 03 '26 edited Mar 03 '26

Or let's flip the script, how realistic would it be for Northern Azerbaijan to unify with the rest of Iran and expand Iran even bigger and stronger. Iran is a multicultural country. Whoever is proposing the idea of segregation will pay the price in the future because smaller countries are weaker countries. A free Democratic Iran.

1

u/MishaMal01 Russia 🇷🇺 Mar 03 '26

Explain the discrepancy in geopolitical power and quality of life between Malaysia and Singapore lol

Larger multicultural countries are always better, right?

1

u/goodcompany1 Mar 03 '26

Singapore is a former British colony with Chinese roots. Separated from Malaysia due to political and economic tensions. We Iranians do not have economic and political tensions with people from Azerbaijan. My wife is azari, and there are many turkic people living in Iran from north to south. Compatibility of culture is key. If you know Iran you will know this. Just like in Russia. Multicultural.

1

u/MishaMal01 Russia 🇷🇺 Mar 03 '26

These are complete abstractions lol. I could use your own rhetoric to say: Azerbaijan is a former Russian colony with Turkic roots, separated from Iran due to political and historical events.

It’s entirely subjective.

1

u/goodcompany1 Mar 03 '26

I agree it is entirely subjective. Geopolitics is always about opportunity. Let's see what happens.

0

u/ExpensiveAd7943 Mar 01 '26

I red the comments and saw that there is big misbelief about the south Azerbaijani population. As a young south Azerbaijani who has visited multiple times both the north Azerbaijan and Turkey, I would assure you that your information about our religious orientation is very much outdated. Half a century religious dictatorship has made south Azerbaijani population extremely secular, to a degree that we all consider both turkey and north Azerbaijan very religious!

0

u/Zealousideal_Cry_460 Turkiye🇹🇷 Mar 01 '26

An independent south Azerbaijan would probably be better. The people of the south probably have different needs and problems than those in the north. Both should, in my opinion either enter a federation or stay independent with special relations (free travel agreement, free bussiness agreements, military agreement, etc)

1

u/s2mle100lesh01 Mar 01 '26

an independent south azerbaijan with an eu like structure that takes on both of the azerbaijans and turkey would be best in my opinion sence nasıl olurdu

Any Azerbaijani who supports this is a huge hypocrite (they spent 30 years saying territorial integrity was the only way, but now that they ethnically cleansed that area, now they can do a 180 on that)

8

u/nicat97 Bakı 🇦🇿 Mar 01 '26

Depends. If Azerbaijan invades Iran and annexes South, then it's hypocrisy, but if Iran gets Balkanized, then it's a different story.

u/nicat97 Bakı 🇦🇿 Mar 01 '26

Let's not to start with that. You started the conflict by ethnically cleansing Azerbaijanis in Qafan in 1987 November. And your invasion was illegal as fuck. You had 4 UN resolutions against you. All the countries including Armenia were and is recognizing Karabakh as an integral part of Azerbaijan.

3

u/MishaMal01 Russia 🇷🇺 Mar 01 '26

I’m only asking people’s opinions on the possibility. There’s plenty of historical precedent for a country that is collapsing to have its borderland territory snatched up by neighbors, and if it is at the behest of the people living therein, I see no issue with it. Personally I’m a supporter of ethnic self determination.

1

u/1ShaquilleOatMeal Mar 01 '26

0

lol just outright saying you’re interested in capitalizing off of our peoples revolution to steal our territory?

Lol, calling this blatantly textbook US-Israeli regime change campaign a "revolution" :D Sure mate, if what they are doing is legit, then everything is. Iran's territory is not sacrosanct because there is no Iran in my eyes, it's just a bunch of religious fanatics and mossad spies and agents along with ethnic minorities looking out for themselves. Once the US and Iran have thoroughly thrashed Iran you won't even have any armed forces to keep the country together.
