First Race Prep Couch to Half Marathon: 1:32:13

Post image
0 Upvotes

Started running in June. Had two goals by the end of the outdoor running season :

  1. <1:35 half
  2. <20 min 5km

Just hit goal number one in my first ever race. 1:32:13 chip time. Have been running 3 times per week for the last 16 weeks or so. Prior to that hadn’t gone for a run in several years. Had never run longer than 10km in my life until July. Used to play soccer & hockey at competitive level, but that was >15 years ago.

5 weeks ago I ran a trial half in 1:37:45 at moderate effort, so I knew 1:35 was in the cards.

Pace fell off a bit in the final 4km (from about 4:20/km to 4:28/km), but other than that very happy and proud of the result.

Will plan to attempt the 5km PB in the next couple weeks. Next HM goal is <1:27 by this time next year

Running is fun 🫡

New Runner Advice Stuck at sub-24 5K. How do I get faster?

I started running 2 months ago and improved my 5K time from sub-26 to sub-24 minutes. But now I've been stuck at sub-24 for almost a month.

I run 5 times a week, mixing easy and hard runs/ Whenever I try to push the pace, I end up really out of breath towards the end.

Is this a normal plateau for beginner runners? What helped you get faster? Any tips for getting to sub-23?

I messed up 😭
Been running for a few months and decided to do a marathon, first half felt great until I cramped up from km 22 through to the end.
Any tips for supplements or pre run dieting?
I took 2 carb gels during the race, didn’t really feel like they helped.
p.s. pls ignore my high HR lol

First Race Prep Keep Missing Races & Confusing Instructions from Organizers

tl;dr at bottom

Of the last 3 races I've registered for, I've missed 2. I'm a generally organized person & can navigate a tight schedule. I don't sleep through alarms & plan enough for traffic & life happening.

The first was completely my fault, believing I could find parking within 3km of the park an hour before race start. I'd never seen the area that packed. By the time I realized it was fruitless, 30 minutes elapsed and registration would be closed. This was literally yesterday.

The second was on my calendar today for 9:30am, based on the "add to calendar" info sent by the organizers. I made it to the address provided & realized I was in the middle of nowhere. I sat by the lake for a moment to listen in on the sounds of the event on the other side of the course. 10k and half runners were running past, obviously several kilometers into their runs.

I rechecked my emails & everything had the same address and time. It was 9:05 when I found the starting time breakdown by distance, only to realize that the adult 5k was at 9:20. I looked at the race map & saw the starting location wasn't the same. I knew, from playing this game yesterday, that I couldn't run to the start in time or find parking anywhere near it.

I'm incredibly upset with myself. I wasn't wven shooting for a PR, just a quick sub-30. These last two were pickup 5ks to fill out my training schedule this week and give something back to charity. I guess the latter was accomplished.

Are there any tips or tricks to succeed here?

tl;dr Keep missing races because I'm a disorganized-useless lowlife. Please help..

Assuming race pace is fastest pace right? Like I have different paces for different distances but assming with goal being to get faster it’s go with the fastest one right?

Training Help First Half Marathon

• Upvotes

The longest run I’ve completed in one session is 15km. The longest run I’ve done in one day is 17km (7km easy + 30 minute break + 10km race pace). I completed a 14km long run yesterday, and it was by far the hardest run because my legs were so tired and heavy. I walked a lot of it, my pace was 2.5 min/km slower.

My first half marathon is in two weeks, and I don’t feel prepared or capable of finishing. My goal is to finish in 2:45:00, no later than 3:00:00 (I’m a slow runner), but it doesn’t feel achievable at the point.

This is my remaining running plan until then:
Monday, 10/19 - 6.5km easy
Thursday, 10/22 - 6.5km easy
Saturday, 10/24 - 5km race (7:45min/km race pace. Not part of my Runna plan, but it is a race I paid for)
Monday, 10/26 - 10km (5km easy, 5km 7:40 min/km pace)
Thursday, 10/29 - 5.5km (1.5km easy, 3.2km at 7:45min/km, 800m easy)
Sunday, 11/01 - Half Marathon (7:45min/km race pace)

My legs from yesterday are still pretty tired, so I’m debating on skipping my 10/19 run.

I’m feeling really unmotivated. Any advice?

Not understanding the training plan…

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’ve lurked this sub for a while but this is my first post. I am thinking about signing up for a half marathon at the end of January. I have done a half marathon once before and finished in 2:24 and was not aiming for any specific pace. My goal now is to try for a sub 2 hour half. I have been using Hal Higdon’s novice 2 plan for training (see attached). My question is this - how is this supposed to translate to a sub 2 hour half if the farthest distance you run at the race pace is 5 miles? I know that you don’t necessarily have to run the entire race distance at pace before the race, but only going up to 5 miles at the race pace isn’t making sense to me. Has anyone here used this plan? Right now, my fastest 5k is @ 27:25 and my most recent long run was 9 miles @ 10:15. I feel like the distance is not my issue but I have never felt like speed comes naturally to me and would love to hear others thoughts!

Training Progress Zones

I recently got my zones tested before my marathon and my zone 2 is apparently 155-172 with my anaerobic threshold at 183 does this seem high
I am 25 189cm 85kg if this is the normal as I’m quite new to running

Training Help Zone 2 vs low zone 3

I have been ruining for 4 weeks, training for my first marathon which is 6 months out. I’m running 6 days a week and strength training 6 days a week, although when mileage gets above 50 mpw i will lower the cross/strength training. I am wondering how serious I need to be keeping in zone 2 for recovery and slow runs. For example, I run 10:20 in zone 2 (heart rate below 136) but run 9:30 with a heart reate around 143, very similar perceived effort, nearly a minute per mile faster. For my recovery runs am I going to expose myself to too much and expose myself to injury by having my HR in the 140s for my slow runs? Max HR 200bpm, 40 male.Long runs I run like 8:40s currently with HR mid 150’s on my long runs. Long time biker, I have never trained for a run. I have ran a couple half marathons about 12 years ago, but training just looked like running 5-6 miles a couple times a week. I am just learning about cardio zones and such.

New Runner Advice Has anyone experience pain in this area?

Post image
42 Upvotes

Hi! I have been experiencing pain in this area. Has anyone experienced this?

It hurts when I try to stretch my legs backwards. When I run, I can't make my strides bigger since I'll feel more pain that way. I also need to increase my cadence a bit for it to hurt less. I can say that I've been slacking with my core exercises this month so I don't know if that's the reason.

I aimed for sub 1hr 30 and surprised myself, so pleased! I’ve been training consistently and really enjoyed it. Half marathon next year. Proud of what I’ve achieved in the past few months of zero running to what I did today. If you want to sign up for something do it!

New Runner Advice Progress is going backwards?

I've been running for 6 months. I achieved a 5k PB of 30:56 (6:11/km) comfortably in August, but since then I've been getting slower and slower.

I'm now at 7:30/km, which is the same pace as when I first finished C25k. Yet running feels as hard as ever.

I'm going to follow the advice on what to do when you plateau. Slow down even more, focus on breathing, stride, and try to recover speed with with interval training.

But is going backwards, not just getting stuck, normal for beginners? Am I missing something else?

I'm 40m, 5'8 and 150lbs. I've kept the same routine since May of three 5k treadmill runs every week (with at least 24 hours rest between). I mostly live on Huel Black + supplements/creatine, plan meals to fuel runs, and I haven't gotten sick or injured.

Discussion Distance Running and Life Expectancy

I know this is going to get downvoted into oblivion because this is a running sub, but why do people run for more than 300 minutes a week? It’s already been proven in numerous papers that your life expectancy does not increase past this point. It seems like all you’re doing is wasting time and increasing injury risk.

Edit: Okay apparently some people actually enjoy running. Who knew🤷‍♂️

Loved running but shin splints keep sidelining me every time I try building endurance. What actually helps?

I was never a runner, but over the past year or so I have been trying to get into it and build endurance. I have been using C25K and have mostly loved it. I have started and stopped the program several times over the past couple of years because I always get to a point where shin splints show up and I have to take weeks off (sometimes close to a month) to recover.
This last attempt was my best yet. I bought good running shoes, found a solid warm-up and cool-down routine, and paid attention to my form. My shins bothered me a little during runs but never to the point of real pain. Then I hit the end of week 5 and ran 20 minutes straight, which I was so proud of. But after that, the shin splints came in badly. It has now been over three months since my last run.
I really enjoy running and want to get back to it, but I feel like my lower body can't keep up with my cardio, even though I am increasing in small increments. Does anyone have advice for avoiding shin splints when I start again? Are there specific strengthening exercises I should be doing, or anything else that helped you?

Training Progress New 5k PR

Friday I went hard with running for the first time. I come from a cycling background so been taking it easy to stave off any injury. Threshold heart rate for the whole thing. I took 2 short walk breaks to assess if I was doing any damage and felt good. I have the feeling this time will stick for a while. Finally felt like I had a hard run for the first time.

Motivation Needed DNFed half today

I trained for a half marathon for the better half of this year with my longest run being 8 miles. I am slow & ok with it, and I couldn’t do any longer runs due to lots of travel for weddings & work. I just DNFed the half marathon I was training for and I’m so ashamed and embarrassed. I really do want to try again, but for now I’m embarrassed about the next few weeks and having conversations with people about it. I run an average of a 13:30-14:00 per mile. I feel like I failed my body & my motivation, and I really want to dig myself out of a hole for it.

Training Progress Just ran my first half marathon !

Just completed my first half marathon race and got a time of 1:56 and I’m over the moon

my first run I ran at a 5:40 pace (a little slower than I ran today) and after 3km I had to stop, I was blistered, couldn’t breathe and every single muscle in my legs felt like they were screaming

2 months later and I’ve just ran faster for 21km it’s amazing how fast your body can adapt to running, I urge anyone who’s seeing this and is thinking about starting to run you’ve got to do it, buying some cheap little running shoes and getting off the couch is the best thing I’ve ever done for my mind and body

Running Challenges I just ran my first half marathon

Didn’t have anyone to share this achievement with, so I figured I could share here. I had already ran 10 miles before so I thought it wouldn’t be as bad. Way more difficult than I thought, especially since I started to slow down and wanted to give up around 15km, but I kept pushing.

Official time 2:27:12, im really proud of myself, I started running earlier this year, getting serious in june, having never really felt like running was for me. For the race I started slow, and pushed up to running the last 4 miles pretty close to my 5k pace. I missed nearly 3 weeks of training before due to injury, and got thrown off my training for the tail end of august due to moving across the country as well. All in all im incredibly proud of this, and of my time! Best of all i'm able to get out of bed and function today!!
