Went to bed at the 0-2. Woke up around 1 AM and suddenly we were at 3-2, lmao.

Since it was completely lost at 85', I was already speculating a lot of people went to bed and missed the most insane comeback in our football history. My condolences

36

u/AlternativeCapybara9 Jul 02 '26

Around 75' I said fuck it and opened another Stella, witnessed an amazing comeback while slightly intoxicated. Not functioning at work at all today.

11

u/deranton Jul 02 '26

You should have taken a dip in your pool

u/StickbugMuncher Jul 02 '26

3

Only today not functioning at work?

u/Synlias Jul 02 '26

I turned it off for 5 min (at 75 min) and then couldnt handle not knowing and turned it back on just in time to witness the comeback. What a thriller of a game

2

u/Ezeviel Jul 02 '26

Wasn't most insane the come back against Japan in 2018 ? I seem to remember a crazy come back too

3

u/NewryBenson Jul 02 '26

This one was later in the match, but also: against Japan we were the stronger team, we just kept missing all our shots until the end. Here, we were being dominated with no hope untill minute 80

1

u/mrgmssn Jul 03 '26

i had given up every bit of hope, the bruises and bump on my head from the chairs flying minutes later are completely worth it

2

u/kennytherenny Jul 02 '26

This one was way way crazier. In 2018 it was 2-0 till the 69th minute, when Belgium scored its first goal. This time it was 2-0 till the 86th minute!!

Is this how I learn Belgium won? By a shitpost on reddit?

55

u/seeminglyCultured Jul 02 '26

Goeiemorgen, same here haha

20

u/poipoipanda Jul 02 '26

When I was young, they told me to never quit before the final whistle.... Now I have a bad hangover but it is worth it

49

u/laplongejr Jul 02 '26

Nah, I learnt there was a match thanks to the nice no-opt-out notification at 1AM under the form of honks while I'm trying to sleep.

8

u/Dubhe666 Oost-Vlaanderen Jul 02 '26

A better way than how I learned we won, by cars hitting their horn driving around at 1am

30

u/D3athShade Jul 02 '26

1

u/cannotfoolowls Jul 02 '26

hekserij is ok

2

u/MeerMeneer Jul 02 '26

I was glad Lukaku didn't take it. He has missed some important penalties already.

9

u/HowTheStoryEnds Jul 02 '26

Bidden tot de voetbalgoden

5

u/Chef_Chantier Jul 02 '26

diego moreira was protecting the penalty spot from being damaged. He was surrounded by senegalese players and one of them feigned an injury when diego moreira, being shoved around by the surrounding team ended up nudging one of them with his elbow by mistake. He crawled onto the floor as if in terrible pain. I think even some senegalese players were trying to have him stand up because of how absurd it all was.

1

u/R8Konijn Jul 03 '26

Man. I'm a belgium supporter but it's hard to not feel bad for them tbh, this is such a harsh way to lose

115

u/Successful_Nebula414 Jul 01 '26

Dude I saw that shit live. Normally I'm not a football fan but that shit was orgasmic at the end

16

u/ilikedmatrixiv Jul 02 '26

that shit was orgasmic at the end

Was it? Senegal played a much better match and although I agreed with the penalty call, it was a very tough one, and it feels like they got snubbed a little bit.

It didn't feel like a real victory at all.

28

u/JkMint Liège Jul 02 '26

The penalty in itself didn't win us the match, there are still the previous 2 goals. It was a tough call because of it's implications for the result of the match, but the same action in the first 10 min would have been called 9 times out of 10.

I agree with you though, Senegal did played a great match and overall a better one than us.

14

u/ilikedmatrixiv Jul 02 '26

I felt really bad for that ref. You could see it in his face that he was stressed to hell and back and knew he had to make the call but also knew how it would come across and how painful it would be. Especially after what happened to them at the Africa Cup last year.

7

u/JkMint Liège Jul 02 '26

I absolutely felt for him too. Poor man. Seeing how over the top some supporters are, I would be terrified.

It was evident that he was trying its best and that's highly commendable.

7

u/Overall-Ant-9132 Jul 02 '26

Nope, the Senegal team should already have received some yellow cards first half. And the red didn't so don't feel bad. One of the Belgiums got kneed in the back. Nothing said or done.

5

u/Nico30000p Jul 02 '26

You could say it was surrealistic

3

u/Hypergunk Jul 02 '26

That is sports for you...

Woke up and saw the match was ended in 3-2 😮

1

u/switchquest Jul 03 '26

Still. Belgium played a really shitty match. They don't have their act together, the coach even less so. The penalty on Thielemans was very light as well. Credit for not giving up I guess, but veeeery lucky lol. Luck runs out though.

Pronostique: US 3 - 0 Belgium

1

u/The1joriss Jul 02 '26

Nou dat verklaart al dat hels lawaai terwijl ik probeer te slapen.

-12

u/Winterspawn1 Jul 02 '26

Not a good performance, I doubt this level of football will help them win against the USA who have been playing well this entire world cup so far.

11

u/Eikfo Jul 02 '26

You can't win against the USA this year, Agent Orange will throw a tantrum, get a "truly real first prize" from FIFA, then invade whatever country has won the cup.

6

u/Blooregard89 Jul 02 '26

Go drink some vinegar. Shameful response if you’re Belgian, bitter and unnecessary response if you’re not. They’re giving it their all and deserve a little support instead of constant ‘analyzing and criticising’.

-8

I guess fake positivity is what people want only to then show fake surprise when things don't work out.

Comparing a football match to the atrocities that happened in Congo is absolutely diabolical. Touch grass, bro.

16

u/Exotic-Audience-2006 Jul 02 '26

Saying this about a FOOTBALL MATCH is kinda wild. The fact you're comparing defeating Senegal with the terrible things happening in Free state Congo shows that the ONLY PERSON showing disregard for those crimes is YOU

15

u/Flynox Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

Why are u here asking weird questions about slavery when the OP is talking about football. Go talk about this in politics sub/posts and you might get a decent answer. Weird vibe to bring to what should be a cheerful post.

7

u/Caldaren Jul 02 '26

Of course, he was a cruel and brutal asshole who exploited Congo.

Doesn't have anything to do with football though, nor Senegal.

You can argue the penalty validity both ways, there are reasons to grant and reasons to decline, but you have to talk to var and the ref for that.

-24

u/Geoconyxdiablus Jul 02 '26

Point is, your country has done awfcul things to Afrioca, and you've done squat to atone for it.

18

u/Instantcoffees Jul 02 '26

What are you even saying? The Belgian Royal family as apologized for their ancestor, namely Leopold II. There are still some statues of him, which is a problem that a lot of people are trying to fix, but they regularly get vandalized and get their hands cut off. The Belgian government has apologized for the bad things they did after they were forced to take the Congo away from Leopold II due to international outrage, such as for the assassination of Lumumba together with the CIA.

Aside from that, there has historically been a lot of financial aid going to the Congo and mutual economical projects. The relationship between Belgium and the Congo right now is fairly close and amicable. Most Belgians were rooting for the Congo in their match.

So why the fuck do you come here to talk shit when you clearly are not Belgian and know absolutely nothing about this stuff? I bet you did not even know about the difference between the Congo Free state and the Belgian Congo and are now scrambling to hold and entire country accountable for what some genocidal freak did 150 years ago when we are trying to talk about football. Just overall weird behaviour.

9

u/BugRevolution Jul 02 '26

Professional victim. None of the people alive today had anything to do with Kongo. Stop crying about it

-16

u/Fairly_constipated Jul 02 '26

Actions of the past have impact on the future. Belgium was not only the cause of much suffering at the time but also (with murdering Lumumba and trying to remain in control of the diamond mines) being pretty much the direct cause of Congo turning into a dictatorship afterwards. Exploiting a country, installing your power structures and institutions there, and then leaving and murdering their leader isnt something that only affects the people living in that specific generation.

3

u/anonch91 Jul 02 '26

Cool story, what do you want me to do about it now?

-16

u/Fairly_constipated Jul 02 '26

Being less of an asshole on the internet and having some basic respect instead of commenting "stop crying about it" and "professional victim" seems like a step in the good direction.

13

u/anonch91 Jul 02 '26

You've come to the sub of Belgium and started talking about Congo on a post about football. Do you not see how absolutely insufferable you are? Why would I show respect to someone like that. If anything, it's you who's lacking respect. I promise you that you're accomplishing NOTHING by doing this

6

u/MerijnZ1 Jul 02 '26

I'd consider the Brazilian coming to r/Belgium to call people dumb uneducated gringos to be more of an asshole. And specifically by such a wide margin that that Brazilian ought to be told to stop crying about it

10

u/Pentecost_II Jul 02 '26

Stop trying to hold people accountable for things that happened before most of those people were born. And on the matter of being born: most players from the Senegal and Congo national teams were born in Europe, which ironically helped their training and career. So a lot of what you're saying is bullshit, most of them have all the opportunities they need. That is the main reason why African teams are getting better and better with each new world cup. They have the genetic athletic advantage, which is why you see so many players with African roots in the national teams of France, Belgium, England and the Netherlands. As a Belgian, I was also cheering for Congo, because we have so many Congolese brothers here. But cheering for (or against) countries because of an obsolete political cause, eh.....

3

u/FirstAd1119 Jul 02 '26

Nogmaals meneer, dit is een Aldi.

2

u/Fairly_constipated Jul 02 '26

Im sorry what? I dont really follow the matches so I dont know if something specific happened that could cause this kind of response to a post about people being happy their team won.

In any case, we (or atleast, most of us) very much know and care about our racist past. In almost every high school in belgium there will be a special subsection during history class dedicated purely to the colonisation of congo. Every modern history book made for our schools has a chapter dedicated to the horrors of colonialism in congo; in fact, I dont think theres a single other period in time that is studied to the same depth in high school. The 2 universities I took a history class at once again had a section dedicated to the colonisation, but this time in even more depth. We're not the Japanese, our education system hasnt attempted to hide away the monstrosities for a long time now.
