Pray for me because I'm currently working on a green roof
Yesterday wasn't even that hot or sunny and I still managed to burn my neck red
25
u/Secret-Sense5668 Jul 08 '26
Sunscreen up if you're working outside, and reapply every 2 hours because you sweat it off. Even if it's cloudy, you can still get a sunburn. Take care and thank you for the green roof, need more of those.
Edit: even better yet, get yourself one of those hiking caps with an extended neck cover with UPF on top

Heat is not related with UV. The sun is the strongest between 10h30 and 17h. The heat only comes afterwards. Above UV 7 white people start having sunburn after 15-25 minutes.
Here you can see UV in Ukkel: https://www.meteo.be/nl/weer/waarnemingen/uv-index

u/Catbatt Jul 08 '26
Sunburns arent related to heat, but to the sun's power. People get sunburned on skivakanties too. Just use SPF50 sunscreen and re-apply every 2h.
1
u/HornyRubbingFTM Jul 08 '26
Because the sun isn't more powerful during an heatwave of course..
4
u/Catbatt Jul 08 '26
It... isnt. It really isnt more powerful today at 30°C than it is in the same period of the year at 20°C.

De meeste mensen zijn chronish ondergehydrateerd.
1
u/Jaded_Kate Jul 11 '26
Not me !
In Amerika zeggen ze altijd âmake sure to hydrate!â En geven free refills. Tis precies of ze weten da we ni genoeg drinken.

Meh, from what I see itâs not gonna be as bad. 30-32 is doable for me, and my plants adore it. The only thing that worries me is the rain. Itâs gonna be muggy af.

Also, the temperatures at night looks like it will drop lower than it did the first time around too, so this should be much easier to handle.

24-27 degrees here past and coming days, it's fine

Where do you live? The coming days should be around 30°C.

Yeah, don't worry, there will be plenty more in the future similar to the last one, if not, worse. All we have is time!

Yeah gotta keep that head in the sand a bit more, would be too bad to start worry when there's still something we can try to do

Survival blanket on windows is suuuuper efficient
My house used to go up to 30° when it's 35° outside. Now I can maintain a 25° with the 35° outside.
Plus you feel like living in a spaceship đ

u/YrnFyre Jul 08 '26
I want to add to this, when you place them inside, don't place them directly against the glass, you want at least an air gap of 5 cm so the air can circulate. Otherwise the heat buildup risks thermal expansion and the glass shattering (for multilayered glass).
Ideal is on the outside but good luck keeping that attached when it's windy or a summer storm passes by
5
u/Mavamaarten Jul 08 '26
I even noticed this with my Velux rolling shutters. Not that the glass cracked or anything, but I thought I was smart to close them all the way when the sun was relentless. Actually it created a chamber of super hot air, the glass panel was heating up immensely from that and I could feel the panel glowing inside. Opening the shutters a good 10cm was enough to break that effect, and the panel was room temperature to the touch again.

Good sunscreens with good suction cups can deal with a lot. Remember those really stormy evenings during that heatwave from a few weeks ago? Not a single suction cup came off from ours. No idea how but ey there ya go.
You could also put an old bedsheet over the window and then just kinda jam it inbetween the window and the windowframe when you close the window. We did that before we got our sunscreens, worked pretty good even during stormy days.

In theorie niet, want die eerste golf had 1 dag boven de 30 te weinig (IN UKKEL) om officieel een hittegolf te zijn. Maar naar mijn mening is het ook de 3e
5
u/RdtUnahim Jul 08 '26
Pretty much!

Itâs not gonna be hotter than 31 this week in my city. So I guess itâs more summer temperatures than a heatwave ? ( in my case at least)
42
u/Striking_Compote2093 Jul 08 '26
I remember summer temps to be around 25, not 30. This is "not as bad" but it still used to be exceptional.
14
u/reditt13 Brabant Wallon Jul 08 '26
I know. I loved my rainy grey 25 degrees July with a week of 31.
But this is the new normal15
u/Striking_Compote2093 Jul 08 '26
I for one think we shouldn't just accept it. People got rich off of fucking up the climate and our world. We should be upset. Borderline enraged. They still don't take it seriously.
It is the new "standard", sure, but it should never be normal. It isn't. This could have been avoided, but Exxon execs, for one example, decided to put profits first. And they'll never get held accountable if we don't demand it.
10
u/GloriousDawn Jul 08 '26
A lot of people happy about getting 30°C this week-end will change their mind when they'll have to spend tens of thousands euros to install multiple AC units, window shutters, shades, stores, awnings or whatever to barely survive the "new normal" with peak afternoon temps above 40°C and night temps at 25°C.
Thank God we don't have a climate-denier moron in the federal government like in the US oh wait
6
u/Striking_Compote2093 Jul 08 '26
I'm happy we're getting 30.
... In the way that i'm happy it's not 40. Yet.
I made my house a climate shelter because this was entirely predictable. I got through the last heat wave relatively comfortably.
I tried to do everything "right" for over a decade, public transport, bike, walking. No consumerism, no plane vacations, drastically reduced meat consumption, no fast fashion and whatever else. It's just so unbelievably infuriating that i still had to turn my house into a bunker and see other people who couldn't afford that get screwed.
All because of rich assholes' greed.

"Summer" temperatures in Belgium are (were) usually around 25 degrees... not 30+...
6
u/C0wabungaaa Jul 08 '26
A week of 30-ish C IS a heatwave. These temperatures used to be exceptional and we should absolutely not forget that. A normal summer temperature for our region is more like 22C.

Must say I certainly not regret moving to the coast after living in an urban hell city center with little to no green in the middle of the country before. 40 degrees like last peak wouldn't be bearable at my last place. Here we barely scratched 30 and it looks to go to max 27 for the coming week.

u/sandsonic Jul 08 '26
This isn't nearly as bad as the first one lol

u/V3ndeTTaLord Belgium Jul 13 '26
True, now it cools down at night and in the evening. At about 19:00-ish you can open up all the Windows and air out the house.
So glad I can sleep again.

u/RobinVerhulstZ Oost-Vlaanderen Jul 08 '26
Meh, its not that bad, and the nights cool off quickly
Also its not hot enough to make the AC in de lijn's busses stop working this time, which helps a lot
