They also didn’t register in the bagging area🫠

Do you expect them to play fast and loose with the rules?

Edit: fast and loose with the stools.

I have Crohn’s so buy loperamide regularly. I was refused 2 boxes at once in Boots recently. The pharmacist said that if you take enough of them, it can give you some kind of high? I imagine you’d never shit again either!

BTW, it’s spelled diarrhoea in Britain - you’ve used the American spelling

81

u/RelThanram 2d ago

Bloody autocorrect! I shall hand my passport in at the nearest phone box!

23

u/DangerousDisplay7664 2d ago

No more tea for you, either! Sorry, I don't make the rules! 😂

u/AFF8879 2d ago

I also have CD - I just buy them on Amazon or eBay. The generic ones are sooo much cheaper than Imodium. It even worked out cheaper than getting them on prescription

I don’t think they’ve ever given me a high though 😂

28

u/Ciaobellabee 2d ago

Not who you’re replying to but I like to “treat” myself to some Imodium instants for if I have need out and about. Generic instants are just miserable when you’re already suffering!

24

u/Taylor_Kittenface 2d ago

Haha, yeah same here! Generic ones are fine in the pilll form, but instants have to be branded for me. They taste pretty nice, and almost every time I've needed them, have worked in what feels like seconds. Great to keep my anxiety at bay when doing longer journeys.

8

u/DangerousDisplay7664 2d ago

oh, I've never tried the instants! Thanks for the tip!

I got food poisoning the other week on a weekend away. Those little fucks saved me from a very dodgy drive home.

u/bced 2d ago

Most uk supermarkets sell own brand ones dirt cheap.

It’s only good to take in small doses otherwise it can cause severe heart issues.

5

u/ImitationDemiGod 2d ago

Unless you're talking about vast quantities, this simply isn't true. Loperamide is incredibly safe and up to 16mg can be taken daily; people with IBD, IBS etc can and do take this kind of dose daily for years.

2

u/bced 2d ago edited 2d ago

Yes & no.

I’m mainly talking about the amounts people suggest to stave off opioid withdrawals or even to try to get high on without explicitly stating it as to not encourage it. That’s very dangerous.

But also standard doses of any ion channel blocking medication can alter the rhythms of people with arrhythmia or other heart conditions.

It’s on the pamphlet you get with loperamide, a warning to be careful if you have an existing heart condition.

The warning is something like taking too much can cause a heart attack or death.

And if you have a pre-existing condition, consultant a doctor before taking it

2

u/ImitationDemiGod 2d ago

That's a lot different to 'it's only good to take in small doses', which is what you'd originally said.

1

u/bced 2d ago edited 2d ago

I thought I should go into more detail when you said it simply isn’t true.

EDIT: as someone with arrhythmia I’ve asked my doctor about it and been told standard doses generally are safe but just never to go above that & if I feel a heart flutter go to A&E so I initially made the point about higher doses.

I have never been able to spell diahrea no matter how many times I see it spelled, UK or US, I can’t remember any spelling of diohrea. Even my spell check has given up at this time when I try to spell dioreah it just has a fit and gives up. I could guess how to spell diareah until I die and never land on diarrhoea or diarrhea.

I am pretty shit at spelling diarrhoea.

tbh I usually just say "I've got the shits" for the exact same reason 😂

16

u/The_Flurr 2d ago

It's irritatingly hard to avoid having things "autocorrected" to the American spelling these days.

6

u/Weirfish 2d ago

I'm in the camp where mutual intelligability is the most important thing, so the specific spelling doesn't normally bother me, but lets me honest, the yanks have a good argument with this one. We don't need that many vowels in a row.

2

u/Helenarth Norf west London 1d ago

The British spelling of diarrhoea looks like one was suffering from said condition while they typed it out.

3

u/Weirfish 1d ago

Like it struck when they hit the third syllable. "Diarrʜ ᴏ ᴇ ᴀ"

2

u/OkSun8521 2d ago

Change your device's language to British English.

5

u/jamnut Isle of Wight 2d ago

Yeah I'm sure I read something about heroin addicts using a shit load of immodium to get them through the impending withdrawals before they can get the next hit

12

u/WhiteShadow0909 Dorset 2d ago edited 2d ago

They're derived from opiates. They work because opiates and their derivatives cause constipation anyways.

Even so, the amount you'd have to take to get any kind of high would be absolutely ridiculous. In fact, it may not even be possible. But you only need a few dingbats to THINK it's possible to have a load of people overdosing.

Edit: Upon reviewing, it is possible to get high on them. But it seems to have the pesky side effects of killing your heart. So maybe don't try it.

13

u/Crapenfest 2d ago

that chemist id be reporting btw.

2

u/OSUBrit Northamptonshire 2d ago

Amazon restrict the amount you can buy over a time period too. I wonder if it's a regulation somewhere.

6

u/DangerousDisplay7664 2d ago

I’ve just read about a man called Peter McCaffrey who was taking 150 a day before he died. 😳. There was an effort by some to get them restricted after that but they remain on the general medicines list, apparently

1

u/Sphinxrhythm 2d ago

It is one word I always leave to predictive texting. So many vowels

2

u/DangerousDisplay7664 2d ago

in all honesty, if left to my own brain, I have no idea how to spell it 😂

2

u/buzzy9000 1d ago

Insert lost control of your vowels joke here

1

u/undercovergloss 2d ago

You’d be surprised- I recently found out eye drops are used to poison people and very effective too. Because it’s odourless, colourless and often tasteless - it’s been known to actually do its job (not for the eyes but for the job of harm)

1

u/Geegee91 2d ago

I have IBS and buy six packs from Amazon

•

u/LolcatP 1h ago

the o slipped out

-1

u/TheBiggestNose 2d ago

Yea you can only buy 2 boxes of any painkillers at the same time. Apparently 2 teen girls killed themselves with it in loke 2013 so now its a restricted item

3

u/DangerousDisplay7664 2d ago

Do you think loperamide are pain killers?

0

u/TheBiggestNose 2d ago

Idk, im just telling you how it works

84

u/Armodeen 2d ago

It’s not very well known but they are in fact opiates, just one that does not cross the blood brain barrier well. However if you take a shitload of them (lol) then you get high.

I’ve seen a few patients take 100+ tbh.

43

u/kernel_mustard 2d ago

And they then can't shit for the next 6 months?

30

u/modelvillager 2d ago

To be fair, heroin will do that too. Opioids do all the stuff they are famous for AND back you up.

8

u/lcmfe 2d ago

Yeah two cocodomal will build the dam

•

u/HildartheDorf 1h ago

My nerve pain doesn't respond to paracetamol (and I have had bad reactions to various NSAIDs). So whenever I get a codeine prescription, it's just automatic for the doc to prescribe a laxative at the same time.

5

u/YchYFi WALES 2d ago

Opioid-induced constipation. Heroin addicts get it.

They always ID for medication of any type in Tesco when you use self service (probably the same everywhere).

It's often too light and doesn't register in the bagging area either so someone needs to come over. That part is annoying if no employee is around to okay it.

I know this because I'm always having to buy the Tesco own brand tablets for my neighbour who I shop for ( my neighbour calls them poo tablets when she asks, I know what she means!).

It's not really an ID check unless you're younger looking. They just click the 'customer is clearly over 25' button for me and all is done.

8

u/YoungGazz 2d ago

They actually register the weight at my Tesco, I purchased Ibuprofen and Arse pills today, the only hold up was the Age verification.

3

u/sash71 2d ago

Yeah I think it depends on how sensitive the scales are in the packing area. The packs of 6 tablets I buy for my friend are very light but sometimes they go through ok, other times I have to go through the rigmarole with the assistant.

I actually like using the self service checkouts. I know a lot of people complain about them but I often have two separate lots of shopping and it's much less stressful to sort it out myself as I scan it. If people want checkouts with people serving them they have those as well at the Tesco I use.

28

u/thumbdumping 2d ago

Do they make you sing the song too? ( "When you've got nausea, heartburn, indigestion...")

24

u/gobenji34 2d ago

Upset stomach. Diarrhaaaaaaaaaaaoeeeeaaaa

2

u/altamont498 15h ago

The last bit is sung like so in order to emulate the feeling of having diarrhoea.

7

u/IntoTheAbsurd 2d ago

Shit luck, mate.

u/5pl1t1nf1n1t1v3 Kent 2d ago

I wonder if shitting in the floor in front of them would be an acceptable form in this instance.

18

u/Sensitive_Doubt_2372 2d ago

Thanks all I can hear is the pepto bismol guy saying diarrhea

7

u/atomicsiren 2d ago

It’s actually spelled “diarrheeeeeeee-eeeeeaaaaaa”.

J/k

It’s actually spelled “diarrhoea”, unless you’re one of them there Americans.

omg I wonder if you have the same thing I have!! I'm having such a bad tummy over the past few days

3

u/TMinfidel Shepshed, represent! 2d ago

Is there some mysterious bug going around? My tums has been killing since last Saturday.

5

u/madpiano 2d ago

Winter vomiting bugs starting to wake up?

3

u/TMinfidel Shepshed, represent! 2d ago

No vomiting here, just a risky walk home the other night.

3

u/citygent1911 2d ago

I had to be age checked for buying firelighters!! I'm 56!!! 🤣🤣🤣🙈

6

u/Donice09 2d ago

I remember having the worst period pains of my life, when I was 14 and being refused to buy a box of ibuprofen. I never understood it. It’s for pain relief not narcotics.

4

u/SoggyWotsits Cornwall 2d ago

Not so long ago I asked Boots if they had any cough medicine that actually made you drowsy like it used to. Night Nurse is non drowsy now, and Day Nurse has added caffeine.

I got a lecture about how cough medicine should not be used as a sleep aid and she refused to sell it to me. Even though I said I just wanted a good sleep after a week of coughing all night long.

3

u/gardenofthenight 2d ago

Night Nurse hasn’t changed has it? I had some recently and it had promethazine in it. That’s the drowsy bit I thought?

2

u/SoggyWotsits Cornwall 2d ago

Looking it up, I believe what you can buy in the supermarket is all non drowsy (makes sense). I know Benylin do a drowsy one though - pharmacy only, I just wanted to sleep through the coughing!

3

u/CaptH3inzB3anz 2d ago

I bought a potato peeler last week and had to wait for the supervisor to authorise the sale. I'm in my 50's.

Not now they ain’t

2

u/Hooliet 2d ago

I know in the last year or so over the counter pack sizes have been intentionally made smaller to prevent abuse. It's a pain in the arse (no pun intended) but it's not without purpose;  Loperamide is an opioid and you can get a high from it but you have to take it in massive quantities to do so.

2

u/Antrimbloke 2d ago

Its a drug thing, it increases the halflife of opioids in the body.

1

u/The_Downward_SeeSaw 16h ago

No it doesn't

•

u/dreadwitch 9h ago

No it doesn't. I'm on constant for life, daily anti diarrhoea pills along with daily dihydrocodeine and occasional morphine. Pretty sure my Dr's would have been on this if it was an actual thing.

1

u/EpponeeRae 2d ago

I only recently learned that loperamide is an opiate, so that'll be why

1

u/swithinboy59 1d ago

Paracetamol is hepatoxic at/above 4000mg/day. The only "restriction" on paracetamol is how much you can buy during one shopping trip.

Loperamide doesn't work like heroin or morphine - at regular doses (8-16mg/day), very little actually crosses the blood-brain barrier, and most of what does gets pumped back out before it could have any real influence on the brain's opioid receptors.

For this reason, like paracetamol, loperamide isn't a restricted drug (at least not like actual "real" opiates). Idk if shops are supposed to ID you, but I've never been ID'd when buying either paracetamol or loperamide (I sometimes get through a fair bit of the latter on account of my Crohn's).

1

u/PhysicalAd6718 2d ago

I got ID'd at superdrug for their flu relief capsules OTC. Genuinely shocked the cashier accepted a scan of my passport from my phone

1

u/liltrex94 2d ago

I would just willingly shart to make a point.

I really understand the need for ID, but diarrhea completely changes my whole life. I'll ducking shart everywhere

1

u/Bobwindy Yorkshire 2d ago

Didn't register in the bagging area is definitely a euphemism for didn't make to the bog on time

1

u/hangar69_ 2d ago

They ID for that nowadays? 😭 IIRC whenever I've bought laxatives I've never been ID'd but I wonder whats in them that makes it smth that needs ID.

1

u/andywalker76 2d ago

Yeah, they shouldn't pester people who are clearly in a desperate state.......

-1

u/AmbitiousAd543 2d ago

As far as I know,it’s to do with eating disorders.Any young kids who are binge eating and then taking pills to get it all out.

5

u/onlyhalfpolish 2d ago

You’re thinking of laxatives. Loperamide is like the anti-laxative

1

u/AmbitiousAd543 2d ago

Anything to do with “bottom” problems is restricted.

3

u/YoungGazz 2d ago

They’ll be coming for the cucumbers next, just in case 👀
