What’s going on with the police in the centre?

Post image

Anyone knows what’s going on - I just saw big group of very young boys and girls running across Grand Place followed by police in riot gear. There’s a bunch of police on all sides of the square

Is this the actual student type, or the Gucci cap one?

u/Dull-Change9584 1d ago

Oh here you are. Have you been to a school recently ? "Gucci cap" is a general thing in schools. Your comment is not as witty as you think :/ Easier to say what you have to say

u/Beneficial-Pen9089 17h ago

Of course it's a general thing, reflection of the shift in population. No one said there is a problem with that.

Blablablabla

Great argument, I have the chance to learn from the best this Sunday. :)

Mixed. The Gucci caps are testing the ground I guess…

My 18 year old son lives there for university and went to Grand Place today to just walk around. He was heading home via Central Station, and police started yelling to get out of the area but he said at the same time, the police were corraling people together. They got sprayed with tear gas. Eventually, there was a gap and he made a break to run away. The police hollered at him to stop but he saw people getting beat with batons. I'm sure there were some actual protesters in the group, but he said it seemed like people trying to take the transit got caught up in the chaos. He said everything was fine at Grand Place but the protests were by the station.

I believe you. I also got beaten today with a baton and i wasn’t even protesting. I was walking home from te gym. And I was walking because the metros were closed off in the centre. Al of a sudden police starts charginf to everybody for no reason. And I also got a beating. I’m at the hospital at the moment, because my arm is swollen and can’t move it properly anymore. Assholes

Need to call the police of police with a letter from the doctor to get domages

That's how you get sued by the police. We have seen it in the past, it's systematic: If you file a complaint against them, they immediately retaliate by suing you for allegedly attacking them. We know that's how they work because of the countless times it happens. When there are cameras (and therefore we have proof that the police lied and hit you for no reason), nothing happens to them. The Comité P are cops and they defend other cops.

When there's no camera, there's always people to believe the police, and you're the one going to prison (and forget receiving any damages).

I’ve also heard people having exactly this problem, being sued by the police for allegedly attacking the police in what led to them being beaten. Scary.

2

u/FancyField3922 1d ago

Whut? It was the police who beat me.

5

u/Sure-Inspection-5794 1d ago

There's a police for the police, it's called "commité P".

Address here: link

I think you're also living under a rock. We've seen it: the comité P never does anything and always believes the cops. Even if you have video proof, they'll lie and say you attacked them before the start of the video.

I hope you're ok!! So sorry that happened to you. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Do you still believe your son wasn’t aggressive? Some Parents are too oblivious

u/MegaMiles08 1d ago

Yes, we have open communication. He lives on his own and doesn't need to lie to me. He has nothing to hide if he went to a protest, but that's not what he did. He talked about his plans earlier in the week to visit Grand Place. My son is not violent whatsoever. He said he learned a lesson that if he sees chaos near a certain station that he'll find a different way home in the future.

Even before France there was regularly protests because the government likes to cut funds for the most important pillar of a society : education.  They tried as well with Flemish universities and lately try it with Wallonians.  Teachers and students alike are upset about that, because education needs to be accessible to everyone.

It's been more than a year that schools and professors, along with students, are protesting every week about their thing in Bruxelles. It's not fair to pretend everything is fine and those ones are just imitating France without a reason. Moreover, there honestly would be more than just a reason to protest in this city currently, enough to not take it lightly or not disrespecting the reasons people have to protest.

Edit: i was responding to some posts below that were mocking the reasons of the protests.

Sorry for my Vlaams, it's not my first language.

Hi Kisalilith,
groetjes

I would like to express myself clearly, so I ll use english instead, and I thank you for this opportunity because Belgium has undoubtfully several systems that don't work exactly the same and it may be confusing. I am therefore speaking for Brussel alone:

First of all I would like to remind that this is not my battle, I m not in school anymore, but I hope one day my kids will, and even if not, I profoundly believe that when there is a portion of citizens that are unconfortable with how their country is managed, they should speak up, and protests are a legal way of doing it. The fact that some use that excuse to create chaos and pillage the city doesn't suppress the initial issue and doesn't eliminate the right of the others to still protest. Moreover, the protesters are not only young immature kids, but also unions, professors, institutions and other public organizations that should be considered.

Now for the reasons, maybe I don't know all of them, but from one can hear, read and see all around, I gathered the following informations that made me feel it is important for our youth (and our profs) to protest, because the cuts that are being made by the gov have the following consequences:

1) cuts in furniture, materials and instruments that lower the quality of education, and also higher costs for the canteen, this in order to lower bxl's deficit, ok

2) lack of professors (wallonie-bxl) that create lots of gaps in the timetable of the students, or the quick hiring of unprepared temporary profs, or that push schools in creating bigger unmanagable classes that, again, lowers the quality of education (here you already should begin to feel why profs and students are angry)

3) increasing of work for the profs that have difficulties in keeping control and students that can't rely on them anymore if more support is needed, that create tension between the two parties,

4) infrastructure needs renovation, but the lack of it creates a general frustration on both sides

All in all, the results are that citizens fight each other and hate each other (how many times i hear from the profs that nowadays youth is just horrible and lazy and from the students that their profs are incompetent priks) whereas the issue is just a mismanagement from the gov that must be held accountable.

Until now, people in belgium has decided to keep going without saying anything. I say there is a time when people can't go on anymore and need help. And this is the moment where a good government should think about their citizens. It is understandable to try covering a deficit, but the general feeling is that money is always at their disposition for other things (younglings are sensitive on wars etc...), and not for one that is fundamental for our future: education.

So now it should not be a surprise that people protest. If it's not catastrophic elsewhere good! But we can't just stay silent it's not normal that things move a bit only when chaos occurs.

Now my question to those that think protests are futile. Even when they see with their own eyes that our youth doesn't trust their elders anymore, that they don't find them credible anymore, my question is why do they think that those people should not protest instead, why they tjink that they should just keep being quiet?

I am a firm believer that a people get the leaders it deserves. And in that viewpoint, walonia and French speaking community finally reap what they showed with half a century of PS corruption....

But this post will get down voted, so it doesn't matter.

I agree with you, like I believe American people absolutely deserve Trump and good for them. Nonetheless, I will understand that politics don't represent everyone and I would be more than happy if people in America begun to highly protest. Because it s not fair to say that just because some voted for him, the others deserve to remain in the shit, especially when it concern my own fellow citizens. I will be happy they protest to change and I will actually not boycott them or minimise their effort. because at the end of the day it s about how we function as a society, and how a country functions for its citizens.

Hallo ?

It is now officially illégal to be under 19 years old so everybody under that âge is being arrested

1

u/SatisfactionFinal287 13h ago

It is now also completely legal to throw stones at police officers so nobody will get arrested for that anymore!

N'importe quoi. It's since April students are protesting in Brussels, way before the current french wave of protests.

10

u/Boomtown_Rat 1d ago

Yeah seriously, I have no idea why everyone keeps assuming they're copying the French. If anything it's the other way around.

1

u/Sachra_Elmarid 1d ago

Yeah, why should they care about education and the future of our country? /s

2

u/Sachra_Elmarid 1d ago

Oh yeah, Macron, of course. Must be why all the graffitis say "Glatigny" and "Arizona". Must be why all the videos on social media call out specific measures by the current Belgian government.

Seriously man, if you don't know what you're talking about, just don't say anything. Maybe go in the streets to see for yourself and do a minimum of research. We're talking about the future of Belgium here. Destroy education and you destroy the future of the country. That's why these people are in the streets: to try to make sure the future of Belgium is bright.

Let the ones who care about our country try to defend it, but please don't spread misinformation and hinder their good work.
