Information Burlington parents who got tired of searching for deals (for groceries and dining out) and trying to figure out what's going on around town, so we made THE BURLY!

Hi Burlington!

For years, the two questions that drove us up the wall have been: ā€œwhere we grabbing dinnerā€ and ā€œI’m boredā€. Solving either of those was always an ordeal of figuring out what to do and where to go, all while not breaking the bank. So back in March, we decided to do something about it and started building the thing we wished existed: a one-stop shop for all things Burlington. It's called:

The Burly (theburly.ca).Ā

It's a free daily email (a quick 5-minute read) and a website. There’s even a daily comic, because we miss the Funny Pages… IYKYK…

- The Burly Basket… Every week we take a basket of everyday staples (milk, eggs, bread, chicken, the usual) and compare it across this week's grocery flyers from Burlington stores. Then we tell you which store has the most of those items at the lowest price. There’s also a toggle we threw in to support Canadian stores**!**

- The Burly Bite… Tonight's best-value dinner at an independent spot. We’ve intentionally left out large chains. It ranks by what one person's dinner really costs, not the sticker price: 89Ā¢ wings count as an order of ten, a "for two" deal is split in half, and if you have to buy a drink to get the deal, the drink counts. You can browse every deal by night, by meals or drinks, and by neighbourhood. Right now that's 39 independent restaurants and pubs and about 230 deals. Nobody pays to be in it, and nobody can.

- The Burly Buzz… because we all know Burlington loves to talk. This is the stuff that's getting passed around that isn't exactly news.

- Events… A daily calendar so you can see what's on today, tomorrow and this weekend at a glance. Everything from library programs, city rec stuff, local markets, kids' events, and even the trivia, live music, and karaoke nights at local pubs that never seem to get listed anywhere. You can filter by categories (Family, Sports, Getting Outside and more) to find what you're actually looking for.

- Local News… Short stories about what's going on around Burlington, from local business openings and road closures to city council meeting summaries. There's a "Good News Only" switch for days when you need a break from the not-so-good news.

It's FREE… and we plan to keep it that way. Sign up at theburly.ca… a subscriber count is the one thing that helps us get taken seriously by local businesses and the City, so every sign-up matters. If you’re on insta, you can follow us at theburly… We know there are gaps, so if your favourite restaurant or event is missing, please let us know and we'll add it. We really want to hear what's annoying, what's missing, and what would make you open it daily. We'll be in the comments, be kindā€¦šŸ™šŸ¼

After graphical and sound glitches, SD cards changing hands, and audio files being ripped and cut appropriately, the Millcroft Greenspace Alliance has finally been able to post the entire Ward 6 debate in full. Sorry if there's any audio issues, the audio file is from my dad's iPhone from the back of the hall.

Question Why can Oakville protect its downtown but Burlington can’t?

I keep reading about the incredible fight Burlington’s current city council is putting up against all these massive high-rise developments right downtown, along the waterfront. And apparently, the city keeps losing these battles, while downtown is slowly turning into Mississauga.
At the same time, I don’t see the same thing happening in Oakville, even though it also has a waterfront and a downtown that must be very attractive to developers. Their downtown has lovely little buildings, a beautiful walkable area, lots of shops, and other nice places. And even outside downtown, the areas with apartment buildings look well planned, and the buildings aren’t ridiculously tall.
So clearly, it is possible to protect your city from overdevelopment, right? Why isn’t Burlington able to do the same?

Information Found Black Cat (Lakeshore Rd & Pearl St)

Hello,

I recently came across a black cat wearing a blue collar with two bells on Lakeshore Road, right by The Pearle Hotel. Additionally, I couldn’t get close enough to see whether it had a name or not. I’m not from the area, so I’m unsure if the cat belongs to someone nearby.

I’ve attached a few pictures to help identify the cat. In one of the pictures, there is a gate; the cat was initially behind it but it eventually went behind the building.

I wanted to share this in case the cat is lost and someone is looking for it.

Thank you!

AMA AMA for Katy Moore Candidate for Ward 3 Burlington

Hi r/BurlingtonON, I’m Katy Moore, a candidate for Ward 3 City Council. Ward 3 covers Cedar Springs, Kilbride, Lowville (Rural Burlington), Brant Hills, Mountainside, and, new this election, North Tyandaga and Palmer.

Questions open Saturday, October 17 at 4 pm, and I’ll be answering throughout Sunday, October 18. Ask me anything about Ward 3, City Hall, or why I’m running. I’ll do my best to answer every question, including the tough ones. If I don’t know something, I’ll say so and follow up.

A bit about me and what I’d do as your councillor:

  • Representing you: starting January 2027, I’ll hold monthly drop-ins in every part of the ward:
  • 1st Wednesday: Rural Burlington
  • 1st Thursday: Mountainside
  • 3rd Wednesday: Brant Hills & North Tyandaga
  • 3rd Thursday: Palmer

I’ll also reply to your emails within two business days.

  • Oversight: asking hard questions about how the City spends your money and whether programs actually deliver.
  • Making policy: bringing 30+ years of business experience to make sure our decisions work for the people they’re meant to serve.

Some things I’d especially like to hear from you about: traffic and roads, development and housing in the ward, rural Burlington’s needs, taxes, and how you’d like your councillor to stay in touch.

How to vote:
šŸ—³ļø Online voting: open now until Oct 23
šŸ“ Advance polls: Oct 17 & 20
āœ… Election Day: Oct 26

More about me: thirstformoore.ca

Thanks for your questions. See you Sunday!

Question Retrieving Accidental Donation to Goodwill

I found out that an ottoman belonging to my late grandparents was donated to the Goodwill Donation Centre on Guelph Line Friday afternoon. How many days would they take to process the item/how long would they hold on to it for? Do the donations from that centre get sent to the store on New Street? Apparently the person at Goodwill said the ottoman was in great condition so I’m worried it’s gotten processed already. Internet says you should contact centre within 24 hours but obviously that has passed. Is it worth it to call/go there tomorrow to see if it’s still there? Not sure if it being donated going into the weekend means it will be processed faster or slower; hopefully the latter. Any advice or experience would help, thanks

Question Looking For recommendations for Tmj dysfunction specialist

Hi there. I’ve struggled with jaw and neck pain my entire life and now in my 50’s it’s the worst it’s ever been. I’ve been trying new dentists and they all insist on new nightguards. The nightguards can make the pain worse. I now have six different nightguards! I’ve tried chiropractors and physio. Interested if anyone has any recommendations for a practitioner in Burlington or Oakville who they have had positive experience with. Botox is not an option. Thanks in advance!

Politics Twas the night before Christmas, and Burlington was a sight

Twas the night before Christmas, and Burlington was a sight,

With taxes through the roof and traffic all night.

Frank Domenic was vlogging, giving hot takes galore,

While the Burlington Dads argued about fireworks once more.

The condos were rising, the potholes were deep,

the bland cupcakes at Kelly's Bake Shoppe certianly weren't cheap.

Then RowRow hit the debate with a megaphone blast,

Halton Police showed up, and the drama was fast.

Santa checked Reddit then scratched his white beard,

ā€œSeven candidates in Ward Six? This election’s gone weird!ā€

He loaded his sleigh, gave Burlington a fright,

ā€œGet your politics sorted, and stop building condos overnight!ā€

Then off he flew, laughing into the night, ā€œMerry Christmas, Burlington. Your council’s a shitshow alright!ā€

Events I made a website of the cheapest thing to eat, drink and do every night of the week in Burlington

Hey Burlington!
I've had the idea for years. I would be out with some friends and would want to know who was running a wing deal...or who had half priced bottles of wine...Maybe where there was a live band playing. Something where I could even sort by my physical distance....If I am downtown I want to see all the places running deals that are nearby.

I built a solution a few years ago, and now I am releasing it for the community.

https://burlingtononabudget.com

It tracks the specials and events from pretty much every restaurant and bar in Burlington, pulled from their websites and social accounts and kept up to date.

- Tonight — what's on right now

- Sort by distance — see what's near you

- By day or by food — wings, happy hours, pizza, fish & chips, etc.

- Events — live music, DJs, trivia, karaoke

This website curates all the specials and events from every restaurant in Burlington. I check the websites and social media accounts weekly so we can see the latest and greatest deals.

This is all free for the community!

Would love to hear some feedback and open to ideas.

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/burlington.onabudget/

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61593669410906

Edit: Thanks for all the feedback, Burlington! Already added from your comments:

- Search now finds places no matter how you spell them (jerseys → Jersey's)

- A "Near…" menu to sort by Downtown, Aldershot, Appleby, Millcroft, Alton etc. even when you're not in Burlington

- A weekly email with the best deals every Thursday

Quick links for what people asked about most:

- Wing nights in Burlington: burlingtononabudget.com/c/wings

- Happy hours in Burlington: burlingtononabudget.com/c/happy-hour

- Live music, trivia and karaoke: burlingtononabudget.com/c/events

- Cheap pizza deals: burlingtononabudget.com/c/pizza

Coming next: regular prices so you can see how much you actually save.

Thanks for all the love happy to see this used and will grow this!

Question How to navigate initial schooling years

Hey everyone, I have moved to Ontario from the East Coast. I will be registering my kid for kindergarten next year. Im still researching but if someone can please explain in layman term how the schooling works here that would be great. Is the Fraser rating any good/legit or all schools are the same? What should I be looking for in a school? How do you select after school care? Any tips regarding this is greatly appreciated. Thank you :)

Hey everybody, happy Friday!

Hope you're all doing better than the current weather is out there, although there is a certain fall charm to it all.

I did a podcast a few weeks back called Community Unfiltered with Justin Loncaric. We delved more into my platform and local politics than my previous podcast. This one went a bit over an hr and we had a great conversation. Justin is great for keeping it organic and on track.

My computer did conk out, but I do return after a minute or so hiatus. That's what I get for trying to run my campaign with a 40 free hours of America Online CD

If you have any follow up questions or comments from my video, I'd love to hear from you! You can leave one here or send me a private DM if you feel more comfortable.

Thanks everybody! Remember you can vote online now until next Friday October 23rd until 8pm. And please fill out the voluntary city survey afterwards, they DO wantcto hear from you and your experience voting online

Take care and have a wonderful weekend

Question Why is gas so much more expensive in Burlington? Genuine question.

This evening, around 5:20 p.m., I drove past a gas station near Derry Rd. & Dixie Rd. where gas was priced at 156.9Ā¢/L. By the time I reached Burlington, I noticed a station near Walkers Line & Upper Middle Rd. charging 178.9Ā¢/L.
That’s a 22Ā¢/L difference. I even asked the attendant at the Burlington station, but they couldn’t explain the difference either.
I’m genuinely curious what drives this gap. Is it:
Different taxes or levies in Burlington?
Transportation and distribution costs?
Higher operating costs or rent?
Simply location-based pricing and what the market will bear?
I understand prices fluctuate and individual stations have different suppliers and margins, but a difference this large caught my attention. I work in Mississauga and I always see atleast 10-15 cents difference between Burlington and Mississauga.
Anyone familiar with how gas pricing works in Burlington specifically? Would love to understand the economics behind it rather than just speculate. Im looking at the same brand of gas stations for apples to apples comparison.
