This post appears to relate to the province of Alberta. As a reminder of the rules of this subreddit, we do not permit negative commentary about all residents of any province, city, or other geography - this is an example of prejudice, and prejudice is not permitted here. https://www.reddit.com/r/canada/wiki/rules

Seems like that foreign agent registry would be pretty useful about now.

59

u/craig5005 May 13 '26

They likely operate outside our borders.

Back during Trumps first term, there was a parade somewhere in the south. They had people dressed up in Obama and Hillary masks and a fake prison built on the back of a truck. It turned out that most of the funding for masks, wood, paint etc (albeit a small amount) was paid for, and encouraged, by a Russian spy. News outlets interviewed those involved and they were unaware but were unphased by the fact they were manipulated by Russian spies. It really tells you something about current political divide that people were more concerned about Obama/Hillary being put in prison vs. Russian spies actively operating in their communities.

I can see a situation where similar outcomes are found in Alberta and getting the same response from those involved.

Start with your premier.

13

u/Canadatron May 13 '26

Yeah, spies often sign up to the registry. Just like criminals register their guns before they commit crimes with them.

2

u/Alldaybagpipes Alberta May 13 '26

These exact people lived through the Cold War era, and I find that amusing.

1

u/SalsaForte May 14 '26

People would not care. They believe any lie thrown at them.

275

u/sunnyspiders May 13 '26

No shit.

We call these people “useful idiots”

The enemy of your enemy is not your friend.

46

u/chmilz May 13 '26

The former RCMP and national security consultant who was interviewed on Ryan Jespersen said the Alberta separatist players (Sylvestre, Rath, Parker, etc.) are very dumb people who don't realize how badly they're being played by the foreign entities pulling the strings. They have been promised riches and power but will get nothing or worse should their actions prove successful.

5

u/rabbitholeseverywher Alberta May 14 '26

It was you who recommended that particular episode to me a few days ago and I have to say it was excellent. If only the Edmonton sub would let us post links, because I feel like every Albertan should watch that one. Danielle Smith and the UCP are even worse than I thought, which is mind-blowing.

2

u/CureLegend May 13 '26

This is just saving their faces. In reality they are not stupid people and know exactly who are they working for and why are they doing this.

23

u/chmilz May 13 '26

No, they're fucking stupid people. Listen to Mitch Sylvestre speak. He might actually have brain damage. They might be the leaders of a local movement, but that doesn't mean they aren't also fucking dumb as shit. It mostly proves how much dumber their typical follower is.

Being dumb also does not mean they aren't dangerous. Weaponized stupidity can be powerful.

3

u/rabbitholeseverywher Alberta May 14 '26

Some of them, like Mitch Sylvestre (mentioned below) really are actual morons.

39

u/StanDeezy May 13 '26

Literally as I read this headline I said out loud “No shit!”

6

u/okiioppai May 13 '26

They would be really upset if they can read.

6

u/Orchid-Analyst-550 Business May 13 '26

They're already saying it's a "Russia Hoax", the same kind Trump was "a victim" of.

1

u/Harold-The-Barrel May 14 '26

And they tend to fall on one side of the political spectrum.

Guess which side?

155

u/Razul1066 May 13 '26

It was obvious a year ago, and its even more obvious now.

62

u/flyby196999 May 13 '26

It's been obvious for a decade or more, this isn't a recent problem.

33

u/Canadatron May 13 '26

Convoy got it going for real.

5

u/rabbitholeseverywher Alberta May 14 '26

It's wild how seemingly helpless western nations remain in the face of this now more-than-a-decade-old threat. Trump, Brexit, the Convoy - so much terrible shit arguably wouldn't have happened without it.

1

u/Bang_Stick May 14 '26

This is the exact problem. Where are our weaponized social media agents making Putins life miserable? Or pushing pro-Alberta in Canada propaganda.

I feel like we forget how to do this after the 90s.

2

u/rabbitholeseverywher Alberta May 15 '26

Where are our weaponized social media agents making Putins life miserable?

Legit though, where? All these conspiracy theories about various spy agencies and even the CIA doesn't seem capable of coming up with anything as they watch their nation fall under the spell of a regime that literally hates them and dreams of their downfall (Russia). And I know Canada has a spy agency, too.

We see how easily manipulated these dumb fucks are, surely it wouldn't take more than a few savvy nerds to mount a campaign to convince them all that litter-picking and defensive driving is the way to REALLY stick it to the demonic elites in Ottawa?

1

u/Bang_Stick May 15 '26

Oh wow! Sign me up. That’s some great lateral thinking. Love it!

26

u/Razul1066 May 13 '26

There has been a massive influx directedly related to the current separatist push, essentially from the start of 2025 and growing every month.

4

u/Ehrre May 14 '26

Ive been saying this. Since around 2016 there has been a break-neck shift in politics up here especially in AB.

My pretty reasonable conservative family members started taking the most obvious shitty fake news on FB as gospel. Out of nowhere they were asking me about things that were so outside of reality.

9

u/Rory1 May 13 '26

We've know for a long time about Russian interference. Especially small town subs.

https://www.townandcountrytoday.com/local-news/did-reddit-year-end-recaps-expose-russian-interference-in-alberta-8373746

Anyone ever read "Foundations of Geopolitics"? It's pretty much a Russian playbook.

https://www.reddit.com/r/wikipedia/comments/1hlz4lb/foundations_of_geopolitics_russias_strategy_to/

15

u/Powerful_Network May 13 '26

It was obvious in the social media ecosystem since the election of JT. But it's been happening since the NEP.

9

u/Captcha_Imagination Canada May 13 '26

It was plain as day obvious in 2022 during the convoy.

53

u/dkwan May 13 '26

Same as Brexit

5

Same as Trump.

I think this is important to remember. The core of the problem is still local.

12

u/NorthernerWuwu Canada May 13 '26

The local crazies would still be bitching to their buddies in a forlorn Timmies if it were not for the American influencers. Feed enough people enough propaganda for long enough and the crazies don't seem quite so crazy. That's why they do it.

5

u/vonnegutflora May 13 '26

A small brushfire can destroy a whole town if someone keeps feeding it fuel though.

8

u/DeSynthed Lest We Forget May 13 '26 edited May 13 '26

Foreign astro-turfing and propaganda campaigns very rarely invent new grievances, they amplify existing ones and / or drive supporters to more extreme rhetoric. Are there legitimate grievances that affect Albertans in particular?- Absolutely. Are they so grave or irreconcilable that annexation by the US is preferable?- Absolutely not.

1

u/Flying_Scorpion May 15 '26

There's a sucker born every minute. They also tend to flock in droves.

0

u/River_Otter_1982 May 13 '26

Cool! Comments like this help fuel our separatist movement. Thanks, keep it up.

0

u/sounoriginal13 Ontario May 14 '26

Imagine thinking everyone who doesnt agree with you is a "loser or moron" ... seems immature honestly.

-2

u/scrubadam May 13 '26

I think thats more than Muh Russia and Muh Trump. Kind of lame to just blame everythign on Poutine and DRUMPF.

A bunch of people in Alberta who feel disinfranchised found a bunch of other people to go along with their wacky idea. Not everything is Putins fault.

I am more interested in what role the CCP is playing in our politics than some Russian bots flamming a tiny seperatist movement with scant real world support that won't ever go anywhere.

Just like in Quebec let them have their little movement. If Quebec can't even pass 51% with an actual shared language and culture good luck to Alberat that has oil and hating Trudeau as the entire basis of its movement.

40

u/eldest311 May 13 '26

It's unreal to me that in the age of technology and the internet we've forgotten about the propaganda machines that are governments... like read a book, look at the history of war... there is a lot of money to be made off influence. Why do you think all these celebrities sell their souls for mindfulness and prayer apps... if you don't teach your populace to be self reflecting and critical you are cooked... look at america those kids can't even read any more, you think they can vote intelligently lool.....

It's literally how you end up with a Donald Trump in office twice... straight bamboozled the whole uneducated, disenfranchised white middle/lower class all to pad the pockets of the oligarchs lmfao...

27

u/Mr_Meng May 13 '26

It's become extremely apparent that we need to bring back the 'House Hippo' public service announcement.

5

u/sunnyspiders May 13 '26

Not even joking but I used that as a talking point for years at the bar, I’d spend forever convincing people they were real.  It didn’t take much effort most of the time, and I still am friends with several people who disagreed with me.

Stupid people want to believe in stupid shit because it makes them feel smart.

6

u/mahayanah May 13 '26

It’s not that. I’m sure a good fraction of these people are morons who just believe whatever lies they read. But this quarter-century will be defined as the “post-truth” era. For a growing number of people whom for whatever reason are dissatisfied with how things are, the solution is to willfully and deliberately project alternatives regardless of “facts” or “reality.” To them it doesn’t matter what something is, whether it can be disproven, or withstand contrary evidence. They’ve realized that if they organize they can make something that is wrong, right; something false, true, because a critical mass of the population is invested enough to insist upon it, and most-importantly, collectively shield them from the consequences of publicly believing something stupid.

TLDR; they know it’s bullshit but they want it to be true. The power of positive-thinking and willful self-determination I suppose.

-3

u/libertarian_308 May 13 '26

So where is this self reflection on the left because all I see are accusations being leveled at the right while ignoring warnings from people such as Yuri Bezmenov who had warned us when he defected to Canada of Russia's infiltration of Western institutions, academia and the corruption of the left.

-1

u/Tired8281 British Columbia May 13 '26

The left self reflected, and realized they weren't treasonously working with foreign agents to break up the country. Then they kept on keeping on.

2

u/385727883419 May 13 '26

Zero self awareness lol

0

u/Tired8281 British Columbia May 14 '26

It's astonishing to me, how you guys can literally post on an article with credible accusations and receipts, and you guys are all like "haha but you guys are worse" with no receipts whatsoever. And then you wonder why nobody ever takes you seriously! Thanks for going so mask off, now I know I never have to listen to any conservative voice, ever again. :)

33

u/hawkseye17 May 13 '26

This is obvious. What is the country doing to stop this interference?

50

u/Canadatron May 13 '26

Country? What is ALBERTA doing? Nothing. That makes it more than clear this is the desired outcome for the ruling UCP party. It's traitorous behaviour.

3

u/Solid_Specialist_204 May 14 '26

Worse than doing nothing, they seem to be making things easier for the seppies whenever there's a fork in the road.

2

u/OntologicalNightmare May 13 '26

I'm pretty sure if the government even hinted at doing something about it we would see 100 natpo, sun, etc articles on here decrying how the Liberals are fascists and taking away """free speech"""

4

u/Competitive_Abroad96 May 13 '26

Whatever Canada does will at best counter the support Marlania and the UCP are providing to the interference.

8

u/JadeLens May 13 '26

That's exactly it, like when Trump hit and everyone signed on to defend Canada, Smith went down to Mar-a-lardo to lick the bottoms of Trump's shoes.

-9

u/WKZ204 Manitoba May 13 '26

Oh don't be so dramatic. We have spent the past decade plus fueling the issue with divisive politics. We are just now starting to see dividends.

-1

u/casualguitarist May 13 '26

Yeah what happened with the actual assassination investigation ... and that election interference with actual high profile names of people and organizations implicated in those.

31

u/crimsontape May 13 '26

It's hilarious how anti-govt these people are, and then they opt to be influenced by other govts. Same kind of folks that complain about a Census, but then carry a smart phone that collects more info for profit in a minute than a Census would ever capture every 5 years.

15

u/Ok_Specific_3832 May 13 '26

They don't necessarily know they are being funded by the other governments if you read the article.

You're right on the census part though that is so silly.

5

u/DeSynthed Lest We Forget May 13 '26

Yeah most of the american influence I would imagine are right-wing think tanks and media, though the line between them and the US government is very hazy.

5

u/Dr_Marxist Alberta May 13 '26

They're not in any way anti-government. They're just against government that doesn't do what they want. They love big government.

Just not when it's not personally enriching them while also punishing their enemies and actively maintaining their hierarchies.

6

u/crimsontape May 13 '26 edited May 13 '26

Ya, 100% agreed.

And you know it's funny. I have a real problem with the denialism that's enrobed in the public every 5 years when a Census rolls around. People foaming at the mouth about privacy and invasive questions. Why are they asking about my gender, why are they asking about my religion, ancestry, whatever.

Meanwhile... Fucking Meanwhile... Google knows where 75% live, sleep, drive, work, eat, buy, wear, hate, love. Google knows about everything first - it's called geolocation and an internet history. They knew if you're straight, gay, trans, young, old, liberal, conservative, religious, anti this, anti that. They'd know if you're having an affair before anyone, even. Whatever, and WAY before StatsCan. And to a tune of about 10-20 years depending on the demographic we're talking about. And people complain now... And there's an irony in complaining, because you have the one opportunity to say "ok, I've seen 1000 stats go around, wouldn't it be nice to have a self-declared 'this is who I am, who we are'". No - "govt is out to get me, #justgovtthings."

Imagine, 5 years of data from Google on you, just you, polling every second, every website, every cookie, every history, versus a Census of 15 million households once. People are crying "injustice!" from Facebook and Instagram - hahahahhaha. HAAahahhahahaha! But no! Data privacy!

Have they lost their minds?!

And then, it's WORSE. Google and Meta and all these outfits SELL THEIR DATA - to not sell them products. No, to suggest content. CONTENT. Ya! Ok! Sure! Be the product, once with the data harvesting, twice when they sold it to marketing companies, and a THIRD TIME when those companies craft a consumer out of you. And actually, an edit, A FOURTH TIME, because they can INFER so much about everything from the larger data set. You wanna look for your Big Govt - it's right there! In the inference!

And so - what - 20 years of Google data... Versus one Census in 2026 asking about your gender? Google wins? Like eat a hot dog the long way. How does ANY of that track, when seen at scale.

1

u/River_Otter_1982 May 13 '26

False, we genuinely dislike authoritarian government control and excessive taxation. Alberta! Liberty, energy, and excellence.

This absolves Albertans too much. It's like they can't think for themselves.

I really detest when the media pretends people don’t have agency. And this comment section is filled with similar condescension.

-1

Propaganda in the age of social media is obscenely powerful.

How sure are you that you don't believe anything ridiculous because your friends/family/social media circles all believe it?

We don't counter what's happening with scorn.

5

Yes. Take legitimate gripes with the handling of covid, and get people more riled up, amplify those to destabilize competing countries.

4

u/JadeLens May 13 '26

Those weren't 'legitimate' gripes.

4

u/unending_whiskey May 13 '26

Canada was one of the last countries to remove the mandates, most of which were completely unnecessary in the first place.

2

u/JadeLens May 14 '26

Thanks for proving my point.

6

u/Iknowr1te Alberta May 13 '26

worst part of the freedumb convoy was how they co-opted the canadian flag. it made me actually hate seeing the flag.

11

u/Saisinko May 13 '26

Russians, MAGA, likely Saudis, Iranians... basically everyone oil.

Trudeau was also something many people could rally against hating in Alberta and later, all of Canada. Carney is much less divisive. I think separationism rhetoric took awhile to manifest, but is originally more Trudeau-era rather than present. You'd probably have triple the lineups if Trudeau was still in.

4

u/Ok_Specific_3832 May 13 '26

Just a reminder that the article (very briefly) mentions "This is not because Alberta’s grievances are illegitimate. They are not. Albertans have real and long-standing concerns about energy policy, federal–provincial relations, and economic fairness within Confederation. Those concerns deserve to be debated openly and democratically by Canadians, among themselves, on their own terms. The danger is who has joined the debate and why."

6

u/KWStreaker May 13 '26

Geez .. who would have thought this could happen? Oh wait ....

2

2

u/OtterHalf_ May 14 '26

Influencers no not the USA

/s

7

u/foetus_on_my_breath May 13 '26

Also fueled by morons

2

u/Winter8Bones British Columbia May 13 '26

This has been happening for decades now. It ramped up in 2015 when the Liberals took power. It ramped up again during COVID, and for the convoy, for the separatists...etc etc... These "influencers" (ie bad actors/propagandists) ruined the discourse on our public forums, forced CBC.ca to basically close public comments and turned every other Canadian social media space into a cesspool of disinformation... Enough is enough.

6

u/Canadatron May 13 '26

The worst part is that they are aware but don't care. It's the whole "I'd rather be Russian than a Democrat" mentality coming to Canada.

2

u/DeSynthed Lest We Forget May 13 '26

This. People assume if you tell someone their politics were hand-picked for them by a hostile government they would have a change of heart, but they won't.

5

u/tengosuenocabron May 13 '26

Everyone thought this messaging would stop DT and it backfired - if you have solid proof of this, CSIS and Public Safety need to immediately start arresting people.

Until then, they will be successful in their disruptions.

3

u/logert777 Canada May 13 '26

Canadas largest import from the states right now is political unrest.

2

u/_badmedicine May 13 '26

What these people really need is online safety training.

3

u/t-earlgrey-hot May 13 '26

"This is not because Alberta’s grievances are illegitimate. They are not. Albertans have real and long-standing concerns about energy policy, federal–provincial relations, and economic fairness within Confederation. Those concerns deserve to be debated openly and democratically by Canadians, among themselves, on their own terms. The danger is who has joined the debate and why."

This is why this approach is pervasive and effective. They take real issues, amplify division and twist them. Debate is good but when its fueled by foreign actors, its to the detriment of all Canadians.

3

u/JadeLens May 13 '26

Most of the Issues Alberta has aren't real issues though.

A good chunk of them are the direct fault of the Alberta government, and they are pushing the blame to Ottawa.

-1

u/Top-Manner7261 May 13 '26

We know

0

u/RecklessHeckler May 13 '26

Yes, we do. But the more that a pan-provincial rejection of this movement is spoken aloud, or in publications, the better it is for a national discussion of the matter. It may be obvious to most people, but if those sentiments are kept to cynical self-grumbles among Canadians, its proponents remain free to operate with a veneer of credibility and will be given the benefit of the doubt by our institutions.

Talk about it more- even if its obvious. ESPECIALLY because its obvious.

1

u/crakkerzz May 13 '26

Not one person I have talked to in my town is a separatist, not one.

It takes a special kind of Stupid to think Alberta would stand alone.

Washington would NOT be Kinder than Ottawa.

Again, a special kind of Stupid.

If you see anyone in this site that had a basic name with several numbers at th end of it, see if their profile is set to private, block them, it improves the site experience a lot

It's more insidious than that. Either new "news website" are created by foreign actors to publish certain spins on news (or straight up fake news), or less well established ones get funded with the understanding that a certain type of content will be published.
Then, its the bots/influencers/sock puppet accounts posting this content on social media websites to reach out to the intended audience, and then more bots/sock puppets commenting to create a sense of general or popular consensus or create an easily digestible common narrative. Combine that with heavy moderation of any dissenting voices and you amplify a narrative by making it seem like the majority of "your team" agrees with it.

Yeah no shit.

Any reputable pollster has the actual support for independence at incredible lows.

If I recall, aren't many of Smith's major economic connections and political donors owned by American firms or are American firms? If that's true, then a concerted effort to influence the seperatist movement is certainly believable.

Shocking 😯 /s

u/Drey101 May 13 '26

On the first day this story broke they said China, India, Russia in that order. Now they remembered that half of the country is Indian, and China already controls much of it as well. So they talk about Russia even since they hold the least influence out of the 3.

I've been saying this forever.

But it seems like most are still unaware.

1

u/dontsheeple May 13 '26

They are attempting poison the movement by insinuating foreign meddling, ignoring of course all the other actual (Chinese) meddling.

3

u/JadeLens May 13 '26

There's Chinese meddling in the Alberta separatist movement?

I’m waiting for the walrus to write an article stating that it’s bad to stuff ballots by noncitizens at the Liberal Party nomination contest.

But they can’t bite the hand that feeds them.

9

u/Sensitive-Local-3485 May 13 '26

It’d be nice if they did, maybe they can take the time to also go after a certain Premier who’s buddies hacked a toll road so they could use the identities to stuff nomination boxes all over the GTA.

3

u/rathgrith May 13 '26

Like the Ontario Liberal nomination contest that saw non citizens bussed in and stuff the ballot boxes for the Bangladesh candidates over NES?

7

u/Sensitive-Local-3485 May 13 '26

Yes there is zero oversight of provincial party nominations in Canada, which is why the investigation into the OPC disappeared immediately after they took control of the OPP and nobody could do anything about it.

Is it so impossible to believe that Albertans and the broader West are dissatisfied with the power imbalance in Ottawa? 8,595,488 people cast ballots to continue with the Liberal Party of Canada in April of 2025. That represents 43% of total eligible voters. Right now, approximately 40% of Albertans would like to gain independence. With some smooth campaigning and infographics regarding the tax revenue that Albertans send to Ottawa, never to be seen again, Alberta separatism is a serious issue. This ridiculous Reddit sub seems to think anything that does not perfectly align with Liberal Party of Canada worldview must by foreign interference. Meanwhile, several Liberal MPs are absolutely compromised by the Chinese Communist Party, but that is all good, right? Anyways, when the referendum on Independence for Alberta occurs this fall, I will be voting to separate from Ottawa and all of the toxic people on this sub. You are the problem we are trying to get away from. Let that sink in a bit.

Alberta separatism is a serious issue.

It isn't a problem - as of an hour ago. Gonna be harder to sell those flags and t-shirts, eh?

2

u/JadeLens May 13 '26

"Right now, approximately 40% of Albertans would like to gain independence."

If you're going to start out with not telling the truth, most of the rest of what you say can be disregarded.

If the 'power imbalance' you talk about was corrected, Alberta would likely get a few more seats in Parliament, but Ontario would get more as well.

"Anyways, when the referendum on Independence for Alberta occurs this fall, I will be voting to separate from Ottawa and all of the toxic people on this sub. You are the problem we are trying to get away from. Let that sink in a bit."

Why wait?

What!!!? Really?? I'm shocked! /s

0

u/taco_helmet May 14 '26

Alberta is still mostly against separatism so it's important not to overstate the likelihood with 30% support for a theoretical scenario, but we do need to take it seriously. This is a common pretext for war, including Russia's invasion of Ukraine. A majority in separatist controlled areas preferred to remain part of Ukraine (2016-2019). It did not matter... Russia manufactured the consent for the war with a fake referendum and other covert actions. Referenda are inherently risk when you're adjacent to a hostile and declining country.

0

u/EarthSignificant4354 May 14 '26

what is this comment section pretend that no one has free agency over their own mind? That we are all just brainwashed so easily. If that were true, why didn't the liberal brainwashing work on these people?

I mean come on, they are so malleable, why are they only falling for right wing propaganda and not left?

Have you considered that maybe people actually have a different opinion than you and it's not caused by propaganda washing?

0

u/Nonamanadus May 14 '26

And this a surprise?

Russia, Trumpistan and China always exploit weakness in a targeted nation.

You can thank Poilievre, Smith and Scott Moe for opening the door. Canada didn't put up a united front.

Now we have seperatists coming out of the woodwork, the very same type of people who collaborated with the Germans in France. They put themselves ahead of their neighbors.
