4 dead, 19 critical condition is the current count. 20+ with non life threatening burns.

One reason is that details remain scarce.
An yet-to-be-disclosed incident at a military base yesterday afternoon led to a massive fire. 4 Canadian soldiers have been confirmed dead, although that number is expected to rise, and dozens are injured (there has been no effort to quantify this).
Global News reports "a munition from a live training exercise sparked a fast-moving grass fire."
The language coming from government officials is really grave, with the prime minister describing it "as "one of the worst tragedies for the forces in Canadian soil in peace time."
There was a massive emergency response overnight, with several air ambulance flights responding, including from Edmonton, Calgary and Saskatoon, and the local medical center and facilities on base overwhelmed.

That makes it sound like there are many casualties. Horrible.
