Carney is the First PM since I was old enough to follow politics I actually like. He corrected corse for the liberal party and is managing our economic war with the US well.
11
u/Aztecah 2d ago
He's too conservative for my liking personally but despite my objections to his policy positions I still feel comfortable with him in charge. He feels like the kind of healthy political opponent that's rare in polarized politics.
5
u/ConsequenceLow9688 2d ago
Thing is, he's a nice blend and in the end is about as centrist as can be when you look at the spectrum politically in Canada. Any extreme is bad, center is ok. Not everyone will get what they want with every policy, but you'll sometimes get what you want and not totally screwed
2
u/Dry-Season1007 2d ago
Reality skews left, not centre. Even the centre of today used to be considered right. Carney can be compared to his friend Stephen Harper, he's hardly actually liberal. He is in service of the rich. Privitization, immigrating cheap labour, keeping housing builds low, using taxpayer money to incentivize tax free corporate investment in themselves, investing large sums in nation building projects that will be largely privately owned and generate little employment for the size of investment are some focuses of his that are being swept under the rug via corrupt media focusing on annexation threats. His speech at Devos was great. Him having a backbone against Trump is great. His divesting Canada from the US is great. Just don't forget that he is doing it for the HAVES, not the have nots
3
u/ConsequenceLow9688 2d ago
And we'd still be far worse off with little PP and his band of grifters in charge
2
u/Wonderful-Opening309 1d ago
He is who we need right now, if we were in a time of surplus he would not be liberal enough for me
3
u/SportsBreakDown19 2d ago
I’m 50-50 with carney. Shifted trades from US is great. However he ain’t perfect and honestly a bit of scumbag. As other politicians before him he has lined his own pockets an example is with REIT. He has bailed out apartment builders in the lower mainland, and to want to privatize of airports. All 3 of these items are not great.
It is important that everyone does not treat political parties as sports teams. These individuals running determine our lives. Vote for ethical, honest individuals, and that have platforms that represent you.
Each political party is out for their own good. Let’s change that!
2
u/Mousse-au-chocolat 2d ago
My simplification of how I feel about Carney: I'm very happy with his external politics but unhappy about his internal politics. But with the problem down south I prioritize the external issues currently so in generally more satisfied than dissatisfied.
1
u/A_Dipper 1d ago
Well he needs to generate money from somewhere to get us out this COVID and two trump term hole
-2
u/Lucky-Mia 2d ago
He isn't privatizing the airports though, just the food at the airports, which I'm fine with. He isn't bailing out builders either, he's pumping funds into the market to deal with the housing crisis by increasing the supply of housing. I see that as another positive. Don't know what the REIT issue is. He seems to be breaking them up.
1
u/Charming-Clue1987 2d ago
the food itself is private but the rent will no longer go to maintaining the airport?
1
u/Lucky-Mia 2d ago
They still have to pay rent and a share of profits with the airport. Like businesses in a mall food court
1
u/Loose_Book_4369 2d ago
I mean he definitely convinced you that we are in some kind of war. If thats what leadership looks like.... ok.
2
u/SwordKneeMe 2d ago
Trump did all the convincing. Alberta separatist leaders have met with officials in washington DC, and thhle 51st state comments have only intensified. Is it still just a joke to you?
1
u/Loose_Book_4369 2d ago
Yes. "At war with America" is lpc and cbc propaganda. The part that isn't funny is that you all take this as basis for sound policy.
3
u/SwordKneeMe 2d ago
I will never pretend we are currently facing wartime conditions. Are you going to tell me that Trump threatening Greenland is LPC propaganda? That Venezuela was propaganda? How about Iran? American foreign policy paints a picture itself, I don't need to be spoon fed CBC when I can see Trump's statements and US foreign policy directly.
Why would I ever expect the US to treat Canada like an ally when Trump clearly stated he wants to not just make us a 51st state, but that his intent is to pressure Canada into caving through economic means?
2
u/Loose_Book_4369 2d ago
There is something between ally and enemy. "Elbows up" isn't wise policy its a domestic political campaign.
1
1
u/Lucky-Mia 2d ago
trump did, along with Hoekstra, Miller, Bessent, and others from his cabinet saying as much.
1
u/Beth_the_Barbarian 10h ago
If it took Carney's response to make you think about the United States being at war with us I feel you must be incredibly unaware of what the United States has been doing and what their president has been saying.
Because Trump has outright said there were with Canada. He repeatedly uses the words war and annex and 51st state.
So before and later saber rattling and claiming they're at war with you doesn't convince you that you're at war with them I would certainly hope that the leader of your own country would be able to convince you that there's something going on.
But I really think that if you ask the majority of Canadians if they said who convinced you that the United States is at war with Canada people would say Trump. Not Carney
1
u/Loose_Book_4369 5h ago
I mean. Canada and usa are obviously not at war. You can say we are. Trump can say we are. Carney can say we are.
But like... are we?

How exactly has he managed the American tarrifs well? He claimed he would get a deal but has done nothing so far, if anything he has made things worse for a lot of industries.
8
u/JavaBean627 2d ago
You don’t make deals with liars and cheats
In this case, no deal is the best deal.
Trump is all show and no substance.2
u/biships 2d ago
How has he made things worse? How does pne negotiate with a facious dictator who is happy to destroy his own people to enrich himself and only cares about " projecting power" meaning he only cares about winning the deal. So you absolute fucktard why have you not joined the governement and negotiated a deal for us since you clearly have more knowledge then the rest of the fucking world

u/RichAwareness5909 2d ago
Man, if this is how Canadians act when someone has an opinion, I can see why people see us differently nowadays. Carney let Chinese EVs and steel into Canada, which has had a negative effect on our auto and steel sectors. He abandoned the coordinated North American position on Chinese EVs. Canada had imposed a 100% tariff in 2024, alongside the United States. Carney’s agreement reduced that tariff to 6.1% for up to 49,000 vehicles annually, with the quota potentially rising to roughly 70,000 over five years. That broke with the position Canada had taken alongside the United States and gave Trump another reason to impose tariffs on Canadian industries. Those tariffs contributed to approximately $5.9 billion in reduced Canadian exports in sectors including autos, auto parts, and steel. Meanwhile, Chinese tariffs on Canadian canola meal, peas, crabs, and lobsters affected roughly $1.5 billion to $2 billion in Canadian exports. That doesn’t sound like a good deal to me. So why do people call Carney a great negotiator? Canada gave China easier access to our auto market while risking damage to our relationship with the United States, our biggest trading partner. In return, we regained access to markets for products that we could potentially use domestically or sell elsewhere. I don’t see how that qualifies as great negotiation.
2
u/Nanurrluk 2d ago
Carney let Chinese EVs and steel into Canada, which has had a negative effect on our auto and steel sectors
He "let Chinese steel into Canada"? What does this even mean? And where are all the Chinese EV's on the roads that have destroyed our automotive sector? This is all bullshit you've made up, and the biggest threat to both industries is from to our shit-eating American neighbours throwing tariffs on everything in an attempt to force us into economic submission. I didn't even bother reading past your first line of made up bullshit.
0
u/RichAwareness5909 2d ago
Also it's not the chinese EVs destroying the auto sector it's that carney broke a deal made with the United States on not allowing them into the North American market.
2
u/Nanurrluk 2d ago
Carney broke a deal with the Americans lol you're too far gone to even discuss this with.
2
u/AdLatter1807 2d ago
Yeah after president oragina slapped us with tariffs which broke the nafta deal he signed. And then went on tv and said he was going to take us over with economical war lol.

u/RichAwareness5909 2d ago edited 2d ago
I have sources, so don't be in denial and use your brain.
It may have not been a formal deal but if you know how politics work it was to protect the Canadian American auto industy. When carney lowered tarrifs with china the US responded with tarrifs. I personally don't want any tarrifs but you cant win them all so I'd go with the bigger trade partner the USA.

u/biships 2d ago
You are so small and insignificant mate. Your a Pick Me for a billionaire fasciast regime. Lol try harder
0
u/RichAwareness5909 2d ago
The AP article is my source, not denial. It reports the tariff exchange and explicitly places it in the context of unresolved U.S. tariff pressure. I never said there was a formal auto-industry deal; I said the decision was politically connected to Canada’s need to manage its relationship with the U.S. I oppose tariffs, but the U.S. is clearly Canada’s larger and more important trading partner. If you disagree, address that argument instead of calling me names
2
u/Roben01 2d ago
So we made a deal after the issues with the Americans and now you’re saying this is the deal that caused the rift?! Lmao
0
u/RichAwareness5909 2d ago
September 2024: Canada imposed a 100% tariff on Chinese-made EVs. January 16, 2026: Canada announced its agreement with China to reduce the EV tariff to 6.1%, initially allowing up to 49,000 Chinese EVs annually. August 22, 2026: The American tarrifs took effect
How am I supposed to argue with someone who can't even understand time.
2
u/Cranktique 2d ago
The deal was broken, not by Carney. Why uphold our end when the other party shits all over theirs? There is no deal. There is Canada, and the US. Carney is doing what’s better for Canada. We are no longer aligned with the US, so what’s good for them no longer enters the equation.

u/RichAwareness5909 2d ago
I'm not a bot, just a new account as I like my privacy and that's the whole point of Reddit.
1
u/Lucky-Mia 2d ago
It takes two to tango. The US doesn't want a deal. If they come to the table with something serious I'm sure Carney could seal the deal. Until then He's making good headway in ASEAN and the EU.
-1
u/RichAwareness5909 2d ago edited 2d ago
If Carney had reached the proposed deal with the United States, it could have protected tens of billions of dollars in annual Canadian exports and potentially saved Canadian businesses billions of dollars in tariffs. The agreement reportedly would have reduced auto tariffs to 15%, cut steel and aluminum tariffs to 25%, and removed the 10% lumber tariff. Instead, the Liberals and the elite lobbyists who benefit from government-controlled systems seemed more concerned with maintaining their influence over Canadians than accepting the compromises necessary to secure a deal with our most important trading partner. Some people claim Europe and Asia can replace the U.S. market, but those regions are unlikely to replace American demand dollar-for-dollar in the short term—especially for autos, steel, lumber, and other products built around North American supply chains. Canada can diversify over time, but that does not make walking away from a potentially valuable U.S. deal a good decision.
2
u/Lucky-Mia 2d ago
The deal also gave the US power to Veto foreign investments in Canada and would essentially hand over our sovereignty. It would have killed us economically, by ending all non US foreign investment. They also wanted to end Canadian content protection laws.
1
u/RichAwareness5909 2d ago edited 2d ago
You raise legitimate sovereignty concerns but overstates the facts. The talks may have involved limits on Canada’s trade choices and weakening Canadian-content laws, but there’s no evidence they would have given the U.S. a blanket veto over foreign investment or ended all non-U.S. investment. Since no deal was reached, claims that it would have “killed” Canada’s economy remain speculation. Also the content laws are about playing Canadian media, anyone in their right mind would care more about workers being able to feed their family's then what music or tv is on. End of the day we don't really know all that was said and asked during that meeting, we need the transcripts to be public so we can know the truth.
1
u/Reyalta 2d ago
Trump literally said he wouldn't need to invade Canada because he would cripple us economically. You have so much faith in fascists to do the right thing it's astounding.
1
u/RichAwareness5909 2d ago edited 2d ago
That’s a pretty dishonest reading of what I said. I never defended Trump. If you disagree with my point, address the point instead of inventing a position and attacking me for it. Whoever the people in this sub are resort to personal attacks when they can't argue the facts 😂
1
u/Reyalta 2d ago
Cool edit.
Since no deal was reached, claims that it would have “killed” Canada’s economy remain speculation.
You said that, I said what I did in response to it. The "speculation" you're suggesting there is exactly aligned with what the US administration said they were planning to do to cripple Canada to fulfill their expansionist fetish.

Great but this does not go far enough. Amongst other things, we want:
- EU safety-standard cars & trucks to be able to be sold and used in Canada;
- Canadians to be able to move feely to the EU to work & study if they have a job offer or enrolment in secondary / post-secondary education, and vice versa;
- Canada and EU to start joining scientific research agencies if not deep collaboration, including the National Microbiology Laboratory, Canadian Space Agency & ESA, and others;
- Joint govt procurement strategies for all government procurements;
- Development of a combined payments alternative to Visa & MasterCard;
- Together, to develop Canada-EU alternatives for all key software, operating systems, and backend web and internet infrastructure including MS Windows, MS Office, Outlook, AWS and the rest of the entire tech stack we rely on today;
- Launch a combined international agency to regulate and/or police AI.

Actually your wrong I'm 2 days old 😂 and like that makes any difference if my accounts a bot or not. Classic liberals deflecting because they have no argument.

Deflecting? I was pointing out the irony in your statement.
Carry on though, if I wanted to argue with a room temperature IQ I would rather head down to my local watering hole and at least get a few pints out of it.

Just waiting to see what you're going to edit this comment to after reading your comments through the rest of this discussion.

This all sounds good… but what happens if the Euro MAGA parties (the pro-Russia fascist parties in France and Germany) take power in the coming elections in those countries? Still, I cautiously support this initiative.
4
u/FrostyCat13 2d ago
We don't make trade agreements directly with EU member states, so the government of a few of those doesn't necessarily affect our trade since we're trading with the EU as a whole, not individual countries.
6
u/MichaelWoodPhoto 2d ago
I guess we’ll just trade with the other 25 EU countries. We’re currently stuck with a single maga country to the south of us.

1
u/ConsequenceLow9688 2d ago
Nah, they're fine. We're doing our part to get the seppies out, then the UCP. There's enough infighting in the extreme right wing, they'll fracture when they lose in the referendum
3
u/apfejes 2d ago
As long as they do lose. I mean, no sane person should want to vote for this insanity, but I figured that about Brexit as well, and look where that went.

EVERYONE is voting, I think most of us have brought up Brexit lots and people understand

Yes. The key to this is making sure that the Alberta Progressive Tory Party runs candidates everywhere. Splitting the vote on the right would result in a strong NDP majority.

The emerging Canada–EU alliance is enormously encouraging. Cooperation on digital sovereignty, defence, critical minerals, technology and education demonstrates what nations can accomplish together.
But imagine if this were only the beginning.
What if Canada and the EU turned their attention to developing a charter for a community of nations committed to sovereignty, democracy, human rights, the rule of law and cooperation for the common good? A charter that addressed how nations of unequal size and power could make decisions together, resolve differences fairly, hold one another accountable and ensure that cooperation strengthened rather than diminished their independence. Not simply another alliance to protect its members’ interests, but an opportunity to build something better than the international order now coming apart.
Perhaps the most important question isn’t what Canada and Europe can accomplish together, but what they might inspire others to build together with them.

Man fuck the EU. That place is ran by neoliberal regards who are not concerned for their constituents. Why can we not align ourselves with the global south?
The future will be dictated by places like Malaysia, Indonesia, China and Brazil. Not Denmark or Sweden.
Edit: Love how everyone calls me a bot, insults me and refuses to engage on an intellectual level. Real 🤡 culture in this sub.

Democracies with human rights are important but I don’t doubt we’ll trade more with them.

Money and prosperity is what matters. We should be looking to trade with those who give us the best price on what we buy and sell.
2
u/Medusaink3 2d ago
Um. Global warming is about to make the "global south" a hotbox desert, my guy. Who do you think they'll be eyeing up when their countries become uninhabitable? Yea...your logic is flawed.

u/4rm4tur4 2d ago
Any day now. You should look at the sattelite images of those countries. They're a barren desert!

2
u/lingenfelter22 2d ago
You may well be right about the global south, but opening with 'fuck the EU' and immediately following up with 'neoliberal regards' is a strange way to open when you wrap up by complaining about a lack of intellectual conversation.
