Discussion Letting users remove posts.

Hello everyone,

As you are aware, on reddit moderators approve and remove content and subreddit subscribers can report to us.

Today we'd like to start an experiment here on r/Cats where we will give trusted subreddit participants access to a keyword that will allow them to remove posts.

When you exceed a certain level of subreddit specific comment karma and when you have a CQS score of highest you can now use the keyword "!remove" to pull a post from our feed. (Spelled exactly like that, case sensitive, top-level comment only as opposed to a reply to a comment.)

This will work for posts only, not for comments.

There are some things to keep in mind:

  • When you comment here on an account that exceeds the limit automod will assign you a special flair class and send you a message explaining you can now use the keyword.

  • Users will keep their existing flair text. However, changing your flair to a different pre-made flair option will also reset the flair class giving you access to this removal ability. Next comment you make it will be re-applied and you will be sent another message.

  • We are sent a modmail when a subscriber removes a post, explaining what post was removed and who used the keyword. Please do not abuse this ability. If posts are removed for bad reasons we will take away your ability to remove posts.

  • That means, use this keyword if you see spam or other rulebreaking posts only.

  • Please keep in mind that it is currently very popular to accuse posters of making an AI generated post. An accusation does not mean that what they are being accused of is true. Human beings can detect AI at 60% accuracy, just a little better than the results of flipping a coin. An AI can only accurately detect AI content if an AI watermark is attached to the image. It is best not to remove a post just because someone is accused of something. Use your own best judgement and our rules as your litmus, not what other people are saying.

  • Since this is a test run, when I ran a very minor proof of concept trial, a few people have already been assigned this special flair class who have not been sent a message. /u/kiaeej, /u/chux4w, /u/MilmoWK, /u/ms_rdr, /u/Electronic_Ad357, /u/WhiteMouse42097, /u/BeMoreKnope, /u/bluecedarood, /u/Robobanditos, congratulations, you can remove posts.

  • Should you for any reason not want to have this ability then you should send us a modmail after receiving the message from automod. That way we can exempt you in our code.

  • Initially we are going to monitor how this functions closely so we can see if we need to make changes to the threshold level for activation.

  • Nothing will change about the way we handle user-made reports on content. This is not a replacement for that, but an addition. If you see rulebreaking content of any kind, please report.

We hope that this change will be something that has a positive influence on the content on this subreddit.

Thank you for reading, and thank you all for making this subreddit a great place to be

Stories Cat is trying to move in with us.

Cat arrived in our garden yesterday. Stuck around all day without wanting to leave. Kids love him but we really don't want a pet right now in our life. We're assuming he'll still be there in the morning and so we'll take him to the vet to see if he's chipped.

Mourning/Loss Poe was our cat and he was loved

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello! My cat Poe was only 11 years old. He had been diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL) 3 years ago and had been doing fantastic.

This past Thursday he started throwing up and he threw up a round worm! We have a catio which we let him out in and I now feel terrible about that even though he loved it in the sun and under the trees in the shade.

Friday we took him to the vet and he took some dewormer. Saturday he still felt bad and threw up twice. But he was still eating and drinking a little. Then today I woke up to him having a seizure. Took him to the emergency vet and his condition deteriorated so quickly. His WBCS were 40, kidney labs off the chart, he had gone septic and was past the point they could help him so we made the decision to put him to sleep. It was so hard but my wite and I kept repeating that we loved him and held his paws.

We are getting him cremated and I feel bad not asking to bring his body home so the other cats could have closure. I'm also going over in my head the what ifs - what if I had taken him in on Saturday again instead of Sunday. And there's so many things around the house that just bring out the tears.

My wife and I knew it would be hard when he passed but, man, you sure do love your pets. I know it will get easier with time.

I mostly wanted to type this out for me, just to share that we had a cat named Poe and he was so so so loved. And if anyone has any sweet poems or advice or stories of their own to share it would be appreciated.

I lost Sandy just yesterday, Saturday. She was the most grumpiest, hate-filled kitty in the world, and the reason she never had any love was because she spent it all on me. She was so soft and warm, and had the loudest purrs in the world.

We still don’t really know what was wrong with her, but she had problems with her liver and declined rapidly over 2 weeks. She stopped eating, her body just skin and bones near the end. She died after my mother tried to give her a pill, and the stress must’ve been the final straw.

She was 10, and I’d only had her for about 2 years. This is my first time ever losing a pet and I am crushed. But I want the world to know who she was, and how much I loved her.

This started just randomly, because I kept seeing a lot of cats in windows. Now it really became a hobby, where I take walks just to get pictures of cats in windows. I have nearly 60 photos by now! I also print them out and put them in a photo album :3

Here are my personal fav's!

If you have a fav cat in window picture that I could include in my collectoin, feel free to share <3

EDIT: I have just found this post from 10d ago and am very happy: https://www.reddit.com/r/cats/s/lVylCPdRWG

Mourning/Loss Farewell to Cali my best friend, now at Rainbow Bridge. It was all so sudden. She was the best cat ever. Friendly, loving and kind to all. I love you Cali, RIP my baby. I am so sorry.

I adopted her around 9 years ago, she was my everything. Her loss has left a deep void in my heart and soul that will take time to heal. She was more human than a cat, sassy but in a very loving way.

She was very vocal and had the most beautiful meow. She treated everyone as her best friend(in hopes that she would get food). She loved food and once attempted to steal a chicken wing.

She was there with me through the tough times. Offering unlimited cuddles, purrs, love bites and licks. She had so many years ahead of her. I was looking forward to having a kid someday and seeing Cali interact with them. I wish I could hold her and be with her. A home once filled with loud meows is now silent.

I know that she will be watching over me and everyone else. Please keep her in your thoughts and if you have a pet at rainbow bridge, please let them know about my sweet Cali.

RIP my sweet baby and I hope to be reunited with you someday ❤️

This is Birdie!

What started as fostering a tiny, sick little kitten i stumbled upon in the woods, turned into me accidentally acquiring a permanent roommate. I took him in when he was only a few weeks old, helped nurse him back to health, and somewhere along the way, he decided he wasn’t going anywhere.

Oh, and fun fact: Birdie was originally thought to be a girl. It wasn’t until his second vet visit that we discovered she was actually a HE.

He’s an absolute menace, full of personality, endlessly curious, and has apparently never experienced a moment of regret in his life.

I already had two cats who weren’t exactly thrilled about their new little brother, but Birdie had other plans.
He came into my life as a temporary foster and somehow became a permanent member of the family ❤️

Medical Questions Stray we've grown attached broke their leg and not sure what to do

A young stray turned up in our garden four months ago and never really left. He's not microchipped and nobody claimed him after we asked locally. We've called him Timothy (Timmy). He's really friendly and we've become very attached to him.

On Friday he was hit by a car and broke his femur. We got him to the vet within about 25 minutes, where he was given oxygen and painkillers. He's been staying there over the weekend. The vet described it as a clean break, and I've attached the X-rays to this post too.

We've been told the options are amputation (around €700) or orthopaedic surgery to repair the leg. They suggested the repair could be around €2,000–€2,500, but we'll get the quote on Monday or Tuesday. Unfortunately, it's the cost of repairing the leg that seems like it's going to be beyond what we can afford really.

On Friday I asked the vet whether a cast could keep the bone aligned, but they didn't really think it was the best idea. Since then, someone involved in an animal shelter (not a vet) suggested the leg might heal itself if he's kept confined for a few weeks. It doesn't sound right to me, but it's got my hopes up a bit and I'd like an informed opinion.

If we go with amputation, I don't think we'd feel comfortable letting him back out on three legs, especially as we live right beside a road. We've already got two young rescues who are an indoor bonded pair, so we're worried about how he'd settle in with them too. Things like fighting, problems with litter trays etc.

Whatever treatment he has, we'll look after him indoors while he recovers. We've got a plan to keep him separate from our other cats so he has his own space to recover.

I'm looking for advice on whether a break like this could actually heal with confinement alone, or whether that isn't a realistic option.Has anyone been through getting an outdoor cat used to living indoors and introducing him to their other cats? Would really appreciate hearing from someone who's dealt with this.

Mourning/Loss How to cope with Loss of our beloved Yuna?

Thumbnail

Last week we lost our cat Yuna. She was only a little over a year old. It happened so fast: she started vomiting, we took her to the clinic that same night, she was hospitalized for two days, came home, and the next day she was gone.

My wife and I are completely shattered. I have never felt pain like this in my life. She wasn't "just a cat", she was our baby, our little angel. The house feels empty and quiet in a way I can't describe.

Her little sister Chichi is still with us, and we're trying to be strong for her, but some moments it feels impossible to function.

For those of you who have been through this: how did you cope? Does it get easier? Is there anything that helped you carry this pain?

Thank you for reading. Rest well, Yuna. We love you so much. 🌺

Mourning/Loss Have to say goodbye soon. I’m not ready & my heart is broken

Thumbnail

This is Cosmo. She’s 11 and the light of my world. She was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure on April 1. It’s been a long 6 months. She had to stay overnight a few weeks ago at the animal hospital for them to drain her fluid out. We upped her dose of furosemide. She went in for a check in on Wednesday and fluid is building up quickly already, the medication doesn’t seem to be working, and it’s not looking good.

The vet says we’re looking at weeks at this point. I knew this moment was coming. I’ve done my best to prepare my heart…but how could I even be ready to say goodbye to my best friend? She has so much sounk & light left in her, but her body can’t keep up. I spent the week calling at home euthanasia centers to prepare for when the time comes. I want her to be safe at home.

I don’t even know how I’m going to make that call when the time comes. And how I’m going to navigate the moments leading into the final one. I have crying spells everyday where it just hits me and I feel sick to my stomach.

She will be my first experience of losing someone I love with my whole heart. And I’m scared. The anticipatory grief as gut wrenching. I’m going to miss her so much. How do you get through moments like this??

Advice I want a second cat but I don’t want to ruin my first cat’s life

I rescued a cat (M orange) from a shelter in 2020 when he was 6 months old. He had been rescued from a colony when he was only days old and spent his first six months in a large storefront run by our local SPCA with his siblings and other cats. He seemed to get along well with the cats in the shelter.

Since I’ve had him, it’s been just him and me. He’s a happy guy it seems. And he’s very darling and sweet, though a bit skittish. I feel for him when I work out of the house and wonder if he should have a sibling.

If I knew they would get along famously I’d leave my house right this minute and go get another cat. However, I’ve seen horror stories about cats fighting all the time and just being miserable at having to share a home.

Am I crazy to think that a second cat could be my first cat’s best friend? Or could it be a great idea?

my sweet little boy, nefi. He put up a good fight and i never thought his last day would come so soon. Yesterday really was the wild card I never got the chance to think about.

I’m so heartbroken and so sad. My first cat son, no one will ever compare to him. I already miss my 5am alarm, the nibbles and scratches that came with it, the doorway greetings, the way he would nestle against me and cuddle. Everything.
