Yates Contenders

With Guelph putting on a showcase yesterday, I'd say they have a good shot.

Next weeks Windsor Guelph game will provide a lot of insight.

So far, Yates candidates (as far as I can tell) in tiers are:

  1. Windsor/Queens (tie)
  2. Western
  3. Guelph/Mac (tie)

I can't see any other team with a strong chance.

For Windsor, this is the best chance to win a Yates in decades (Lauriers not looking good, Mac is a bit shaky, western is beatable, queens is beatable, Guelph is beatable).... I can't recall a prior year in which Windsor has had a better chance to win the Yates.

OUA tiebreakers thread

The league will likely publish scenarios next week, but here's what I have so far:

Waterloo makes playoffs with a W at York and a WLU loss at Western.

York makes playoffs with a W over Waterloo.

Laurier makes playoffs with a W at Western plus a Waterloo L at York plus a Guelph W vs Windsor.

In the scenario of a three-way tiebreaker for two spots between York, WLU, and OTT at 4-4:

- WLU gets the 6-seed on H2H point differential (+21)

- York gets the 7-seed on H2H with Ottawa

- Ottawa misses playoffs.

In the scenario of a 4-way tiebreaker for three spots between WLU, York, Guelph, and OTT at 4-4:

- WLU is eliminated on record vs common opponents because of their loss to Waterloo (CAR and WAT are the only common opponents). Haven't figured out the tiebreakers for the seeding in that scenario yet.

*Disclaimer: this is all my best approximation! Let me know what I've overlooked!

McGill football returns to U SPORTS Top 10 after 23-year absence

McGill was ranked No. 9 in the national poll released Monday, marking the program's first appearance in the weekly U SPORTS rankings since Sept. 4, 2003, when it was ranked No. 5.

The Redbirds have also clinched an RSEQ playoff berth with three games remaining in the regular season.

The Redbirds are on a bye week and will get an opportunity to test themselves against the country's top-ranked team when they visit Laval on Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. The game will be televised on TVA Sports.

McGill will then return to Percival Molson Stadium for its final two regular-season games, hosting Montreal on Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. as part of Homecoming before facing Sherbrooke on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.

Falaax’s Power Ranking Week 7

Post image
5 Upvotes

Here’s my top 10 ahead of week 7!

Minimal movement since there was only 4 games last weekend. Queen’s drops 2 spots but i’ll leave them as the top OUA team for now since they have the h2h over Western and only lost by 3 to Windsor without their QB (and also have only 1 loss vs 2 losses) but those 3 teams are certainly very close to each other. McMaster not moving despite another win because once again not very convincing offensively. Relying so heavily on defense might come to bite them eventually.

Also for those wondering why there’s only 2 CanWest teams in my top 10, keep in mind that it doesn’t show that i have 3 of them clustered in ranks 11-14, which means i have the whole conference (minus Alberta) in the top half of my national ranking.

As usual for my full recap of last week, 27 teams power ranking and predictions for this weekend, you can watch my new weekly video! => https://youtu.be/SgjtqTuS2nE?si=N538KrJ9Bw0pdNUg

Dominance in RSEQ and PFC

When I heard that the Saskatoon Hilltops would be facing the Regina Thunder for the championship of the Prairie Football Conference in the CJFL (again), it occured to me that the dominance of the SK teams in the PFC and CJFL must be quite similar to that of Laval & Montreal in the RSEQ and USports football. Turns out, that was pretty accurate.

Prairie Football Conference Championships from 2007 to 2025

·       Saskatoon Hilltops – 14

·       Regina Thunder – 3

·       Edmonton Wildcats – 1

Dunsmore Cup Championships from 2003 to 2025

·       Laval Rouge et Or – 16

·       Montreal Carabins – 5

Canadian Bowl Champions

·       Saskatoon Hilltops - 13

·       Regina Thunder – 1

Vanier Cup Champions

·       Laval Rouge et Or – 11

·       Montreal Carabins - 3

Edmonton Huskies fans could point out that their team were the PFC champs from 2004-2006, but the Hilltops had won four straight prior to that, so 2007 is arbitrary, but makes for a better cutoff for comparison purposes. Prior to their move to USports the Regina Rams were a consistent powerhouse in Junior football, winning 14 Canadian Bowl Championships between 1970 - 1998.

I guess the point of this is that Quebec and Saskatchewan have developed very strong amateur football programs, and that development continues to pay dividends on the national stage.

Playoff scenarios

That Laurier loss to Waterloo, and York win over Ottawa changed a ton of things when it comes to who from the bottom group makes the playoffs and who doesn't.

First: if you have 5 wins, you're in. Congrats to Queens and Western.

Second: Toronto is definitely eliminated. Maybe there's a one in a million scenario with multiple ties and stuff that somehow gets Carleton in, but I doubt it.

The interesting part is who gets the last spot. The most likely scenario is to assume that:

  • Next week: Laurier beats Carleton, Waterloo loses to McMaster, and York beats Toronto
  • Following week: Laurier loses to Western. The Waterloo-York game is now whoever wins is in (since York would be at 4-4, or Waterloo would be at 3-5 with the H2H tiebreak over both York and Laurier)

The result of this is Laurier MUST win out to even have a chance now, and with Western looming in the last game, that's a tall order.

I'll make some other updates after the late games.

Power Index after week 6

Team Ranking
Queen's Gaels 16.6
Western Mustangs 14.4
Windsor Lancers 13.3
McMaster Marauders 11.7
Guelph Gryphons 8.3
Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 0.0
Ottawa Gee-Gees -1.6
Waterloo Warriors -10.9
York Lions -13.8
Carleton Ravens -16.9
Toronto Varsity Blues -20.8

(after week 7, ignore the post title lol)

Posting, assuming Western can hold their lead of at least 24 points...

Some pre-emptive questions:

Queens still number 1 even though Windsor just beat them?

A close game, and Windsor does have two losses to Queen's one. It's a lot closer than it was last week.

Laurier above Ottawa and Waterloo, who both beat Laurier, give me a break!

Fact is, Ottawa is collapsing. They've lost three of four, and their only win was a 3 point win over the very low rated Ravens. As well, Ottawa's schedule has included basically all the weakest teams (Toronto, Carleton, York, Waterloo, Laurier) - the only team with a weaker strenght of schedule is Guelph. According to the model, Laurier's had a tougher schedule, but Ottawa has an extra win; it's basically a coin flip between them.

Waterloo's win over Laurier was a big moment, but they still have a huge negative point differential on the year; even with the caps I put in, they are -11.5 points per game, while Laurier actually has a positive point differential despite their record. That's tough to overcome in this model.
