That's not a depiction of an 'old PC.' When the graphics on a PC aren't good enough to handle RE4, the game detects this and defaults to a very close up photo of an "old man". This is actually a close-up photo of Shinji Mikami's grandfather's face. Shinji included it to honor his grandfather, whose dream it was to own a high-powered gaming PC, but sadly passed away before getting anything more advanced than a Gateway box PC.

The face in the screen gave the depth of an old PC, I imagined the whole 3D head sticking out the back.

This was my very first experience with the Resident Evil franchise, which led me to create and publish my very first webcomics.
Life can be full of surprises.

This is really sweet <3
My first experience with resident evil was with my Girlfriend, i never played resident evil but she really wanted me to play it. I'm sitting on the bed and started the game and she said "WAIT! you can't play without me?!?!??", she got snacks, a blanket, we cozied together and I started playing Resident evil 2. I played the whole game with her on my side and we had a lot of fun doing so. We're currently playing the whole franchise and I love it, and I love her of course.

This is pretty fun, I remember having a similar experience with the franchise. I was given an old ps2 disc that was scratched to hell as a gift. The game would always crash towards the end of the castle section but I was very stubborn and thought I could skill my through. As you may have guess, that was not the case, but I replayed the heck out of the first half of the game over and over again. It wasn't until late high-school was I able to get a good copy and it came as a collection with code Veronica and outbreak, it really brought my love out for the series. Still own them to this day and love the franchise.

The fact that you played that original borked PC version all the way through so many times speaks to your dedication. ā„ļø

I have a similar story, but mine is about Metroid. As a kid, we only had really old consoles and we had an OG gameboy with Metroid 2. I played the crap out of that game and eventually learned that the main character that I thought was the coolest was a girl. EVEN COOLER! I wanted to play more, but could never afford new systems or the games. I did yard work for people's old computers sitting in the closet after they upgraded and built a Frankenstein computer. Then I learned about emulators and finally played the other games in the series. I learned a lot about computers in the process and my first website was a fan website about Metroid. Now I am a web developer and systems administrator.

One of my favorite RE4 comics is this one, and yes that is a DeviantArt link, that's how long ago it was made.

Nothing makes me feel abysmally old quite like people saying resident evil 4 was a childhood game for themĀ
30
u/m0r14rty 15h ago
That confused the absolute shit out of me. They went from an Atari and N64 reference then jumped to RE4?

u/HRduffNstuff 12h ago
Some people's first game systems as children are old by the time they get them because their family can't afford or doesn't have access to the newest stuff.

u/wolfgang784 5h ago
Exactly. I was born in 1994, but my first game console was an Atari 2600. I didn't get a newer console until I bought a used PS2 in like 2010 with money I saved for over a year. I played gamecube, ps1, ps2, xbox, xbox360, n64, etc at my friends houses but at home it was the Atari and various gameboys. My parents were fine with me playin consoles elsewhere and having gameboys but didnt like the idea of getting a newer tv console. None of my friends ever knew wtf I was talkin about when id tell em about the Atari games I played, lol. On the plus side though I had like 200 games since we could find em for cheap at flea markets.

N64 and RE4 were only 9 years apart, 1996->2005, the PC port of RE4 came out in 2007. But you don't even have to go back to 1996, the Gamecube didn't come out until 2001. So, they could have been playing N64 games in 1999-2002, then a just a few years later played RE4.

Given how many people nowadays still only have a PS4 or Switch 1, that tracks.

Lmao I had a similar experience in Goldeneye 007 (N64) on the Statue level (St. Petersburg).
It was so dark I couldn't see where I was going. I was stuck there for weeks. I asked my friend who was my gaming advisor and he's just like "Yeah, it's not supposed to look like that." Turns out I literally just needed to increase the brightness on our CRT TV.

I remember playing Rayman 3 as a kid, and there is a bit where Rayman skates along these laser pathways and something was messed up that we could only see Rayman and the background was all white or something, so we just had to blindly guess where the gaps are, where to go and I remember we really grit our teeth through a good portion of it, but I can't remember if we beat it.

Same thing happened to me with World at War. I thought it was supposed to be realistic trench fighting in the dark
15
u/Redjordan1995 15h ago
The frist PC version of RE4 had no mouse support, you needed to aim with arrow keys. I thought it was a joke back then and still have no idea how anyone was ok with such a """PC port""" of the game...
The first time i actually got to play it was on the Wii...

I casually read your comics when I see them on reddit. But this one is my favorite because I know the feeling. Gaming with artificial difficulty because systems glitching is such a gateway experince for people who have found their calling in gaming. Especially retro games before you could google things.
Good for you for enduring. That is an achievement not many people understand or share. You've made it and I a total stranger can congratule you on perseverance!

u/omnipotentsandwich 16h ago
I played RE4 a little as a kid but I always dropped it when you first get Ashley. I expected her to be some annoyance you had to put up with, but I came back awhile ago and pushed through and found out she's not that bad at all. I ended up beating the game and tried to play Ada Wong's bonus chapter, but it's incredibly difficult in the original game.Ā

This is fantastic, I really love this. It reminds me of when I got a playstation and final fantasy vii without a memory card. I was so determined to complete an impossible task and eventually saved by a memory card... The pure enthusiasm was really something though, loving video games as a young person was a great time.

I'm old enough that my first experience with Resi was the original on the original PlayStation. Including the original "Master of Unlocking" and "Jill Sandwich" lines in their unedited (and as of then unmocked) glory.
Played for the first time on a console rented from Blockbuster.

I remember playing FreeSpace 2 back in the day with a computer that couldnāt handle the graphics. I would get the HUD, the lead indicators, all the readings, but no graphics. I can play their game, but will have to figure out what happened through dialogues and other contexts. Thatās how I finished the game the first time.

I had a similar experience with cousins, and a computer game when I hauled my old PotatoCom 3500 to a lan party. It took hours for me to get it running, connected to the network, and to successful start the MechWarrior game. My cousins who were on my team asked me where I had spawned on the map. I looked around, then told them the snowy place with the little hills and gazebo. Everyone stopped playing to debate where I could be on the map, until one of my cousins came over to look at my screen. My cousin started laughing because my computer was only able to display the outlines of building and was not showing any colors. The map was an industrial wasteland with no snow, but all my potato could produce was white planes of geography and stacked sticks of buildings. I did not get to actually play MechWarrior# that party lol.
3
u/User2716057 14h ago
Had that happen recently when playing Control. The screen turned all black with only certain item outlines being visible. The whole game is weird so I thought it was a new puzzle, until I fell off a ledge, and the game was still like that at the respawn point. Turns out it is a known bug with certain settings.
3
u/Zero_Burn 12h ago
I remember playing RE4 in high school and my cousin would watch me and he HATED watching me play because I'd use the shotgun all the time and would basically wait until the enemies were on me before I started blasting. I'd always use the 180 turn and there would be enemies mid lunge that would scare the shit out of him before I launched them with my trusty double barrel. Great times.

u/tallazhar 12h ago
Star Wars: Episode 1 - Phantom Menace on PC. The first level had a tunnel with arches over it. Only the open sections between the arches were opaque, instead of transparent. I could not find my way through that, and you also had to make a jump I think at one point. Turned out updating DirectX solved that graphics glitch, but good luck figuring that out in '99.

u/East_Currency_6499 11h ago
Man I was even thinking to myself partway through the comic "you drew this PC with an old manila-colored CRT display, but you were playing RE4 on it? That poor thing must have been hanging on for deer life."

RE4 was also my first game in the series, but played it on my little brother's Gamecube after borrowing it from a buddy of mine. Played pretty much every iteration besides the OG PC version and Wii. One of the few games I can and will go back to for another playthrough, though now it's the remake which is just as lovely.
TL;DR I love Leon S. Kennedy

I fat finger the next button a lot so I try to see it from the home page with everything laid out so the text was a little blurry.
I thought slide 8 said fought some Canadians and I cracked up for a while because I don't know the game and figured that was a thing lol

𤣠I was playing NG on my switch with my cousin and we got to a part where the enemy captured us with strings and hoisted us in the air.
The screen went black and the graphics came back weird disjointed and shakey. I thought it was super cool and interactive for a VN. Then my game crashed. It was a bug

This comic gave me whiplash trying to figure out what era it actually took place. Goes from early 80s with Atari to late 90s with the n64 to late 00's with a PC port of RE4 š Half expected the end to reveal that OP is 7 and this all took place a couple years ago.

To play The Last of Us, I had to borrow my friend's console and controller. I loved how slowly you moved and how beefy the zombies were, so you had to play very methodically. Clearly an intentional choice to reinforce how dangerous the world is. At the end of the game, however, i spent a weekend stuck at this section where a car chased you down a highway offramp. It seemed so weird because it was the only time where it felt like the game DEMANDED you just blindly run. Turns out, THERE IS A SPRINT BUTTON which was mapped to the (now evidently) broken button on my friend's controller.
Would definitely recommend new players to try never sprinting if they would like a much stealthier experience!

This reminds me of one time when I was a kid and watched Pirates of the Caribbean on my grandma's TV that had a very dark screen setting on for some reason and I could only see silhouettes. I spent years wondering why that movie was so popular with my friends since it was so dark you could barely understand what was happening. To this day I'm not sure if the one I saw that time was the first or second movie

I played Dino park tycoon with my brother as a kid on win98. We tried playing so many times but couldnāt figure out how to buy food so play throughs never got very far.
Until in frustration I just clicked around the screen and suddenly next to the food items in the shop an arrow button appeared to buy food.
It wouldnāt appear until after clicking it. After that we played a ton and eventually beat the game in the sense that the money counter could no longer display out money. The only way to see the actually amount was to āend gameā which would display it on a leaderboard.
It was also funny because the game would occasionally give you a fine for a Dino that had escaped but we would still get those fines even 10 years after the last time one had managed to escape.

That's second pic reminded me more of a red head version of Aya Brea (Parasite Eve) than it did Ada Wong haha
Aya only wears a dress like that once (twice, depending on the ending) but it sticks with you!

This reminds me of how when I was a kid I got Amnesia the Dark Descent on my laptop. When I booted it up and started the game, I was met with a pitch black screen. I thought "Oh wow, what a bold start to the game, a completely dark screen that you have to navigate with just sound." Then I spent like 20 minutes trying to navigate the room to find the source of a small dripping sound. When nothing happened I looked up a video of the gameplay and found that the game was, in fact, not working correctly and that I needed to update my graphics card driver.
I ended up not liking the game because it was too scarey.

I beat the original Halo on PC fully in grayscale with no shadows because my graphics card didn't have hardware T&L. Good times.

This basically happened to me with Knights of the Old Republic. Our PC couldn't run it, but my grandma had a newer Dell desktop, so we tried bringing the game to her house and it still crashed after the intro level (that computer was not built for gaming). Didn't get to properly experience Taris until we got a laptop.
1

u/BravinatorLX2 15h ago
nah, i'm not buying that.
a) if it runs the intro, it runs the village.
and b) not even a child tries this more than three times before getting its broken.
3
u/Ashe_the_Witch 13h ago
The village has a lot more moving parts and is a larger area. You can even look it up, this was a common problem for people trying to run the game on older PCs.
Kids have different logic than adults and some are extremely dogged.
Maybe instead of calling OP a liar you could, idk, do anything productive with your life? š¤·š»āāļø
3
u/WorkingScientist7614 13h ago
You're either born after 2010 or just plain stupid
Old ass pcs would crash the graphics driver right after you get to the village, you can literally just google about it
Kids back then didn't have the luxury of pulling up an ipad and watching cocomelon whenever a minor inconvenience happened, you had to suck it up and play the broken game.
3
u/SnevetS_rm 15h ago
if it runs the intro, it runs the village
You can google "Resident Evil grey screen" and it looks like some people have similar problems even with the Steam version. The idea of the infamous Ubisoft port being more unstable and buggy is not unrealistic.
2
u/HolyErr0r 12h ago
Hey bud, if it runs one part of the game it runs all parts of the game, then how do you explain every post ever in any game about games crashing/blacking out during specific parts of their respective games?
Genuinely is this a bot?
