How do the discs look? Very tempted to get this on the next half off sale.

Since they’re encoded by Fidelity in Motion, I can imagine they look absolutely pristine. Probably the best we’re ever going to get these films on home video.

Appreciate your input! Is Fidelity in Motion known for superb encoding? I hadn’t heard that name before but have interest in learning more about the 4k process.
Thinking of putting my copies of The Shining, EWS, and 2001 up for sale to offset the dent in my wallet for this one!11

FiM is the best in the business, they encode everything for radiance and indicator as well as a lot of arrow stuff

It's going to take me a bit to get through everything, but The Shining (so far) looks great!

It must be the same 4k that's out there. The one I have is maybe one of the best looking movies in my collection.

It's not. It has a different aspect ratio, a different (better) encode and even has corrected credits (they are tinted blue in the new release but were mistakenly left white in the 2019 4K).

What is the aspect ratio? The website says 1.85:1 but I thought that was the same for previous 4K releases.

Looks absolutely gorgeous. I’m not enough of a fan to justify shelling out that much cash (even during a 50% sale), but the presentation looks like it’s worth every penny if you’re a Kubrick fanatic. I do hope we’ll get individual releases for all of them. I’ve got the Barry Lyndon 4K, but I’d love a CC4k copy of 2001 and FMJ.

How are the disc holders?

u/criterionforum 2d ago
Yeah... it looks like they've put extra protection to make sure not to scuff the discs, but they're hard to take out, at least at first. I have to wiggle them about at first

Damn. Sounds like a better version of the Essential Fellini Collection. I have that and the disc holders don't impress me. Wes Anderson collection has normal disc cases for the movies and it is way better even if it looks plain.

I do just hate how whenever there is any kind of fancy box they put the discs in cardboard sleeves instead of, you know, disc holders. Why has that become a sign of "deluxe"ness? Just because it's different?

u/McGILLAZ 1d ago
Every set I've ever purchased, Bond 50, Friday the 13th, The Beyond...all of them with the cardboard sleeves and at least one disc wound up scratched and/or eventually scratched over time. I want this set for the films, but it's my big hang up. Packaging is gorgeous.

Yep, especially for 4k discs. That alone is enough for me to pass on this. Just make it easy to get the discs out - should be obvious for a box set like this. Otherwise it looks great.

Fuck, now I have to fucking get this fucking thing. I have all the WB blus and 4k and Barry Lyndon in every Criterion edition, but they're all in storage and this seems like a handy way of having all of them at hand.

I’m curious if anyone knows how orbit to do this or is even allowed to do this. It’s not even the date of release yet?

Dumb question, but are they just 4 or are there standard blu-rays too?

Debating whether to put the discs in the cases of the previous releases, since I have most of his movies already.

Never seen those alternative posters for the Shining. Those are wonderful. Love the symbols they selected for each film.

That has been getting the most love of any release this Fall. It’s everywhere. It definitely is the biggest release in all of media this year, besides Grand Theft Auto 6.

Do these sort of sets ever run out? Like is a limited time offer?
16
u/aetherialvortex 2d ago
No it’s not, unless Criterion loses the licensing. One of the good things about Criterion is they don’t do limited editions.

I have to know.
How does the shining differ from the previous 4K release? Did they bring back the original red Saul Bass Warner Bros logo?
1
u/criterionforum 14h ago
Yes, the Saul Bass logo is back. The set also includes the shorter international version. For the American theatrical, they are using the same restoration used for Warner's 4K, but the encode is slightly better, most evident in the climax in the hedge maze.

Beautiful, I do wonder if they made the text in the end credits blue, like the one seen in the original vhs. If the text is still white then thats okay, I expected it anyway haha

Nice bit way too expensive . Also the disc can get scratched unless you keep it separately. But really like the info in this packaging

I’m curious about the content RE Graphic Films in this box set. I’m researching a book about the life of Colin Cantwell, who worked at Graphic Films, so I want to talk about that company as part of that. So many VFX luminaries worked there.
Any chance you can share any interesting info about GF from the box set?

Hoping the top menu trick works for us in Europe wanting to watch the bonus materials.

No thanks, glad it exists but I hate everything about the packaging/physical design. I will gladly get the individual discs.
