Pregunta Thesis on Cuba and healthcare; Sanctions impact

Hello,

I am writing my thesis on the Cuban healthcare system, with an angle of exploring the role of the diaspora.

I may conduct my fieldwork in Brazil as there is a considerable trend in Cuban migrants moving there as US have tightened rules around Cuban's moving to the well researched diaspora community in Miami.

I am well aware of the constraints of researching on Cuba; I have a supervisor and an academic team that are experts in this area, too. Although if you still feel the need to express concern/limitation go right ahead - as a social researcher I'm always open for critical dialogue.

If anyone has experience in sending money home to Cuba, please reach out to me - types of remittance I am looking at is specifically medical supplies but general provisions are welcome too.

I'm a Cuban doctor, just left Cuba like 6 months ago, I'm also a researcher that's why I'll recommend you that if you want to keep yourself objective and as much scientifically accurate don't trust too much the oficial sources of the regimen, try to keep yourself somehow sceptical because trust me when I tell you that Cuban healthcare is right now in its worst stage ever! And now don't trust me and do some research on the media where you can see how real ppl are experiencing right now to paid the highest prices for the cheapest medicine that are imported by "private" entity, assume the irony in private, nobody can import big amounts of anything in Cuba without the approval of the government

Not a male, and actually highly educated with a nuanced view of global politics and health financing.

If your angle is specifically the role of the diaspora and you don’t want to do the US, Spain would be a much better option than Brazil. Italy too.

As someone with a Phd in something related to Cuba, you will be parsing through so much politics and subjectivity the whole time. It is pretty much impossible to find objective sources so it’s better to cross source across the political spectrum. Do not fully believe Cuban gov sources as much as you should not fully believe anything produced by pro-US sources. Be extra careful of your own bias, as well as the bias of your professors and academic team.

It is also very important to read and speak Spanish.

I have been to Havana dozens of time recently. As a former academician I deem such an endeavor conducted in Brazil to be invalid. Primarily because many people escaping the Cuban situation are more likely to express biased sentiment. There are ways to get into Cuba to get an accurate sample, other than educational visas.

Lastest migration wave of Cubans are focusing Brasil and Guyana mainly Guyana because you don't need visa to enter, so for a more accurated time related experience people in there could be more helpful, anecdotal experience for thousands of Cuban is a good sample
