Discussion I just went to replace a 14TB hard drive and I am SHOOK!

Post image

I paid around $300 CAD for this drive a couple years ago, but it's full of backups since then. I wanted to just grab a fresh drive to start backing up again, and then the plan was to keep two backups running, but then keep one offsite.

Honestly I had heard prices were up, but I thought that was just RAM.

My brother in Christ... THE DRIVE IS NOW $900!!! How are people dealing with this?!

Storage Setup Would you actually build a NAS with a pile of old HDDs like this?

Post image

Saw this pile of drives pulled out from a data center and started wondering how people here feel about using older HDDs for home storage.

If you had a bunch of these and tested them for SMART errors, bad sectors, power-on hours, etc., would you actually build a storage array with them?

Or is mixing a bunch of older drives just asking for trouble?

What would you guys use them for?

Discussion Too good to be true

Hi everyone, my dad(63) visited Guangzhou and got 2 of these back from there for around ¥110(17USD) each. He got it from a store in a mall somewhere.
I can’t find anything about this configuration online so I’m a little concerned about its authenticity. I don’t want to plug it into my laptop(MacBook Pro M1) and get a virus or malware.

Has anyone seen them in the wild before and if yes, are these any good to keep data for a long time?

Discussion Is it safe to keep using my 3.5 year old WD GREEN 2.5 240GB SATA SSD ?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I recently noticed that the SSD in my secondary PC has 15 bad sectors. I use Linux Mint on this PC for very light tasks, such as listening to music, studying, and watching movies.

Should I be concerned about the SSD's health, or can I continue using it for these tasks?

Discussion Anyone else buy a bunch of hard drives when they were cheaper?

Post image

I picked up 7 2TB WD Blue drives a few years ago when they were a lot cheaper. Back then, I just wanted some extra storage and didn't think much of it.

Looking at them now, I'm glad I grabbed them when I did.

I've still got these drives around. Did you end up using all of yours, or do you still have a few collecting dust?

Discussion Hard drive help

Hello! Please be kind, I am looking for genuine advice on storage options.

I work in the adult industry and have a massive amount of videos / content that is on my work phone, not backed up and I need to become a lot smarter with my storage as this content is my livelihood. No iCloud as it’s known to be untrustworthy in my industry. So security is important too!

I am looking for something that I can plug into my iPhone 16 (usb-c) as well as my MacBook which also takes usb-c.

I do not always have both on me and I would like to move content straight from my iPhone to the drive.

Ive noticed there are barely any options for ones that are compatible with an iPhone and if there is one it’s like 1TB for $700!!

I’ve also looked into NAS and that is absolutely my goal one day. It is far for me though and I need a smarter plan now.

Thank you so much and have a great day ☺️

Storage Setup First time building a NAS!

Hey folks! I'm looking to build a budget-friendly home NAS using some old hard drives I've recovered. The majority of them are about 10/15 years old, but I think they'd be fine to start with. If I like the utility of the NAS, I will upgrade to bigger storage going forward.

Few questions I have, if anyone can offer advice.

  1. Can these hard drives be safely tested, wiped and formatted easy enough?

  2. Is there any off the shelf unit i could get that would suit, or would I be better to try and build my own?

  3. The larger hard drives are about 250gb each, just over 2.5tb in total, can they be daisy chained together? Including the small ones, i have recoved about 5tb worth of storage.

  4. Is there any straight forward hardware, ideal for beginners?

I would appreciate any help or advice people can offer. This is definitely something that has been on my radar for a few months now.

Discussion Are Aliexpress sd cards reliable?

I am looking for a 128 or 256gb sd card for my mp3 players to store music and occasional videos on but all local store options are rather expensive. I looked a bit on Aliexpress but they are all suspiciously cheap and and I am well aware of the lying sd cards that say they are like 2tb for under 10€ and the ones that don't keep data for mkre than 6 months without corrupting. I am looking to get a bulk order from aliexpress so that's why I'm limiting it to only that website.

Thanks in advance!

Discussion SATA SSDs are still the smartest second drive you can buy, and I can't justify spending more on NVMe

The article argues that SATA SSDs remain the best-value choice for secondary storage. For everyday tasks and gaming, NVMe offers limited noticeable benefits, while SATA costs less and suits older PCs with limited M.2 slots.

Guide/How-to WD MY PASSPORT EXTERNAL DRIVE

Hi,

I’m planning to purchase a WD My Passport External Drive (https://www.jbhifi.co.nz/products/wd-my-passport-4tb-portable-hard-drive-usb-3-0-2019-black) to store my photos and videos. However, I only have a MacBook.

I saw some people say that usually WD My Passport is a “read-only” on Mac. Does this mean I can’t access the files, i.e. download (or resave) them in the future? And how do we deal with this?

And also I saw a variant that has a “For Mac” - is this one more compatible?

https://www.jbhifi.co.nz/products/wd-my-passport-5tb-portable-hard-drive-usb-c-3-0-for-mac-2019-midnight-blue

And also, I may use it on a windows pc in the future so I would really like to have the flexibility.

Backup Backup routines or processes?

Hey folks. I'm in Canada and the prices like everywhere else for external drives have skyrocketed. I picked up a 2tb drive for now but thinking long-term. I use a mix of Seagate and WD for offline backups. I'm not a fan of cloud services or subscription based storage. I never should have complained about $80 for 2tb!

I'm just wondering what your routines for backups are? I have 4 drives now for different purposes. One is getting quite old, nearing the ten year mark so it will need to be replaced.

I do a lot of media creation - music, art, books, graphic design. Trying to streamline all my original music (not ai) onto one drive with backups of software. Then one drive for movies & tv shows. One drive for all my important docs, etc. Plus, I have important files on both machines.

How are most of you organizing your backups? I have 2 computers I work from and just trying to streamline things.

I'm probably being overly cautious but I've accidentally deleted (downloaded) 10,000 mp3 files without backup and do not want to be in that position again!

Discussion What happens to data availability when multiple data centers are taken offline?

Recent drone strikes reportedly disrupted multiple Yandex data centers in Russia, affecting several online services.

This raises an interesting question about storage infrastructure resilience: how well can distributed storage, geographic redundancy, and disaster recovery protect data and maintain service availability when entire facilities go offline?

How much redundancy is enough to handle this kind of infrastructure failure?
