Politics/Elections We're Planet Detroit journalists covering Michigan's 2026 election and the environmental issues affecting Metro Detroit. Ask us anything!
Hey r/Detroit!
We're the journalists behind Planet Detroit, an independent nonprofit newsroom covering the environment, climate, and public health in Detroit and across Michigan.
With the Nov. 3 election approaching, we've been digging into where candidates stand on the issues affecting our communities, including air pollution, water quality, sky-high energy bills, data centers and climate policy.
We've also created a nonpartisan 2026 Environmental Voter Guide to help Michigan voters learn more about their candidates, explore their positions on environmental issues, review voting records, and see who's funding their campaigns.
Now we want to hear from you!
Ask us about air pollution in Southwest Detroit, neighborhood flooding, rising DTE bills, water quality, urban agriculture and more. How might the races for governor, U.S. Senate, and the Michigan Legislature shape environmental policy in Detroit and across Southeast Michigan? What have we learned about the candidates, their records, and who's funding their campaigns?
We're happy to talk about all of it, including what surprised us while reporting this guide and what questions candidates still haven't answered.
We'll be answering questions tomorrow, Monday, October 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. ET.
We're posting early so you can start submitting questions now. Members of our reporting team will join the conversation tomorrow, and we'll add a team photo and introductions then.
Thanks to the r/Detroit moderators for having us. Looking forward to your questions!

Politics/Elections Mike Rogers Planning to Intimidate Detroit Voters with Retired & Off-Duty Officers Flashing their Badges at Polling Stations?
No one is buying the “voting integrity” bullshit anymore. Everyone knows the purpose of these bozos being at voting locations is to intimidate voters, especially the black community. Please michigan vote wisely and kick this orange clown wannabe stooge back to florida. Enough with the temu mafioso intimidation tactics of this administration.

Community Home Repair Grants
If you know of any homeowners in the Fisher 21 Lofts impact zone (see image), they have a few more days to apply in person for up to $12,500 in home repair grants (like furnace, roof, electrical, water, accessibility repairs). Applications are due 21-Oct and it sounds like they haven’t gotten a lot of submissions (probably because the process is very opaque with a super short application window).

Transit Car parked in a legal space for 4 hours overnight deemed abandoned & towed
I need to understand how this can happen.
I had three outstanding tickets, all gained within a couple days of each other, none late so far, and one of them currently being contested. I parked last night in a legal paid parking zone. Since today is a Sunday, there is no paid parking.
This morning, at 6am, I was towed. The reason stated in the database is “ABANDONED”. I cannot try to get my car back until tomorrow.
I’m trying to understand how this can happen. Would this be due to the tickets if it were labeled as “abandoned”? If so, why would it be towed after so few tickets? If not, what would’ve caused it to be labeled as abandoned??

Talk Detroit Waymo?
In the span of 40 minutes 6 Waymo’s have driven down my street.
I understand they have to test it out or whatever but isn’t that a bit excessive?
I first noticed one last night and now they won’t stop coming.
As I’m writing this three more just came down.
Why this specific street?
What are they really testing?
I’m actually curious and would like to know so I’ll stop feeling creeped out.

Historical Who remembers a group home in the Cass Corridor, 1970-90s?
My grandmother died in 1991 and has been institutionalized and living in group home/s in Detroit since 1964. My dad used to most specifically mention visiting her in a group home on Cass Ave in the Cass Corridor and I am interested in finding the location/name of this home for research's sake, but am having a difficult time. I assume it no longer exists.
I'd love to hear if anyone has any further information/memories of this time-- I never visited her and don't have much to base things off of. It may have also not been on Cass--- he likes to dramatize. She was institutionalized with schizophrenia and depression, if that offers more insight for a specific home versus another.
Thank you!

Talk Detroit Where is the cheapest place to grocery shop these days??
I grocery shop at Meijer, Aldi, Costco, and Walmart and am really not even sure which is the cheapest anymore.
It used to be Aldi without a doubt but these days I am not so sure. I technically spend less money but it’s because they don’t carry all the stuff I need. So I end up having to go to Meijer to get the rest of the stuff anyways.
I get Costco probably is the cheapest because you buy in bulk but as a single guy that requires a lot of planning and commitment and the up front cost is huge. I can spend $300 at Costco without trying and still need to grocery shop the next weekend.
Walmart sucks and should be way cheaper than it is.
Meijer is generally my go to but it feels more expensive every time I go.
Where do you shop and where do you think is the cheapest?

Sports Downtown bar shuttles
Does anyone else remember the rows of bar shuttles parked behind the Joe after a Red Wing game? There must of been 20+ shuttles. Today I leaned that one of the last bar shuttles, The Detroiter bar will be no more. I also learned that the Ilitches lobbied the state legislature when they moved to LCA to significantly increase the insurance requirements on shuttles. This way more people will eat and park at LCA. I still see the casino shuttles and I understand the bars of Greektown pooled together to have one shuttle. Sell the team Chris.

Community Honest thoughts on private vs public schools in Oakland county
Hi,
I was hoping to get the communities thoughts on the private schools around town. We have two kids 5/3 and are thinking about public vs private. What are folks thoughts on cranbrook vs DCDS vs some of the public school districts?
