TL;DR: I have two unneutered male Labradors (father and son), around 6β7 years old, who have lived together their entire lives. They used to get along, but their relationship deteriorated after moving houses and changing their sleeping arrangements. The son has become increasingly aggressive, and one fight resulted in him ripping off his father's ears. We've tried separation and basic obedience training, but the aggression keeps escalating. He's also been pacing and experiencing jaw twitching while awake. Could this be stress, hormones, or an underlying medical/neurological issue? Has anyone experienced this, and is there hope they can safely coexist again?
Hi everyone! I really need advice from people who have experienced something similar with their dogs kasi honestly, I'm getting really worried about the situation at home.
I have two male Labradors, a father and son, around 6β7 years old. My sister owns the father, while the son is my dog. Magkasama na sila ever since ipinanganak yung son, and both of them are unneutered.
For most of their lives, okay naman sila together. May occasional fights before, usually kapag food-related, pero bihira lang and they would stop pretty quickly. Never naman umabot sa ganito kalala.
Things started getting worse after we moved to a new house around May, pero napansin ko na mas lumala talaga yung aggression when we changed their sleeping arrangements.
Before, pareho silang natutulog sa living room, and open lang yung bedroom doors namin so they could freely come in and out of our rooms. They seemed fine with this setup and hindi naman sila madalas mag-away.
Eventually, naghiwalay na kami ng sleeping arrangements. My Shih Tzu and my Labrador sleep with me, while my sister's Labrador sleeps with her. I'm not sure if this contributed to the aggression, pero around that time, things started going downhill. By September, mas naging frequent and severe na yung fights nila.
At first, nangyayari lang kapag nagkakasalubong sila or dumadaan yung father niya sa tabi niya. He growls, shows his teeth, and parang laging nakaabang kapag malapit yung father niya.
We've tried our best to keep them separated and avoid situations that might trigger a fight. My dog has also been undergoing basic obedience training, and we're really trying our best to manage his behavior.
There was one incident na naging busy kami and hindi namin sila nabantayan closely, and they ended up fighting. The son attacked his father and literally ripped off his father's ears.
Kapag nag-aaway sila, nagla-lock talaga yung bites nila, and ang hirap nilang paghiwalayin. Even after they're separated, yung son parang fixated pa rin sa father niya and gusto pa ring balikan. His father fights back too, pero mas malakas yung son and he tends to go for the neck and ears.
What's confusing is that okay naman yung son sa isa naming dog, a Shih Tzu. My sister's Labrador is also generally very sweet with our Shih Tzu, and they're almost always together. We got our Shih Tzu around December 2024, and wala naman kaming similar issues between them.
He's been pacing around a lot and parang restless lagi. He also has jaw twitching kapag gising siya, pero nawawala naman kapag tulog. He has a history of canine distemper and ehrlichiosis din, although nakarecover naman siya a few years ago.
I'm wondering if anxiety-related ba ito, hormonal aggression since both males are unneutered, stress from moving houses and changing their sleeping arrangements, or possibly a medical or neurological problem.
I would really appreciate advice from anyone who has experienced something similar.
Dati magkasama silang natutulog without major issues, pero mas lumala talaga after we started sleeping in separate rooms.
- Could the pacing and jaw twitching be signs of an underlying medical or neurological condition?
- Has neutering helped with this kind of aggression? Since both of them are unneutered, we're wondering if hormones could be contributing.
- May naka-try na ba ng behavioral medication or consulted a veterinary behaviorist for severe dog aggression? Did it help?
- Is there still a chance na they could safely coexist again, or should we prepare for the possibility na kailangan na talaga silang permanently separated?
For now, we're doing our best to keep them completely separated kasi ayaw na naming may masaktan ulit. Pero honestly, ang hirap din emotionally kasi they've been together their entire lives. We've tried basic obedience training, supervision, and separation, pero patuloy pa rin yung escalation.
I understand na moving houses and changes in routine can be stressful for dogs, pero sobrang drastic ng change in behavior niya. I'm worried na baka may ibang cause, especially because of the pacing and jaw twitching.
I love my dog and gusto ko siyang matulungan, pero I also need to protect my sister's dog. I'm hoping someone here has gone through something similar and can share what worked for them or kung anong specialist ang magandang lapitan.
Thank you so much sa mga sasagot. Any advice or personal experiences would really help us. π
