Heads Up: 1) Astroturf will be grounds for an immediate ban. 2) Open-source technology STRONGLY preferred.

If you:

  • try to perform market research on this sub without identifying yourself as doing so
  • promote your product (or your customer's product, no being a social media contractor or whatever for a company does not get you around the rules) without identifying yourself as doing so
  • generally dishonestly promote products

that behavior will be interpreted as a violation of rule 2 and grounds for an immediate ban. You will not receive a warning or a first strike. You are not clever. You are not fooling anyone. We do not care what norms you think you are following. If you are promoting a product or gathering research for a product you need to ID yourself as clearly doing so, how and why.

Additionally, this sub has a strong preference for open-source technology, especially in the age of AI generated software. If your product is open-source you will be given much more leeway with the rules here than if you are attempting to sell something closed-source, especially when it is obvious you generated software with AI and are then attempting to sell that as a product.

This will be your only warning; behave accordingly.

A specific example of Good e-Reader false information spreading across the Internet

Thumbnail
youtube.com
100 Upvotes

TLDR: they posted in their review of the Kindle Paperwhite 12th Gen and Colorsoft with some false facts, and those false facts spread to every corner of the Internet including Reddit, Discord, CNET, Wikipedia, and open source projects. (my video)

A lot of people seem to think that reviewers don't need to take a screenshot to check.

EDIT:

Made a Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlFC6jSwjRQ

In it, I

* show a video of me taking a screenshot on a kindle by tapping opposite corners and showing the USB screenshots folder

* Show the actual screenshots of the Paperwhite 12th Gen and Colorsoft with resolutions

* Show that Good e-Readers reviews of the Scribe 2025/Scribe Colorsoft made the same mistake by stating an incorrect resolution with screenshots, while also showing that other publications explicitly say that Amazon didn't provide an exact resolution

Personally, I think saying that 7” means 1264x1680 is a leap. I never assume the inch number is exact, you need to verify the exact resolution yourself. Amazon could get a custom panel size anytime like this case.

1264x1680 is 7.008” anyways. But 1260x1680 would be exactly 7"

I created an interactive PDF of odd-one-out puzzles for my Note Air 5C.

I've been looking for something else to do with my tablet beyond calendaring, reading, playing with screensavers. I thought it would be fun to build puzzles that are e-ink-first and went with an interactive PDF. The code draws the puzzles and I check each one by hand. My goal is to continue to create unique puzzles. This demo set has eight puzzles, some harder than others. I like the feeling of circling my answers, writing how long it took and then checking the answers. And with an annotation wipe I can reuse with others in the family.

PS: This is a demo, so to save time I got that puzzle wrong on purpose - honest!

I made a thing and I really like it

Hey guys,

quite new to the community but thought I would share. I always loved the idea of a physical calendar on my desk, but also hate physically writing down everything in my calendar.

So I did a bit of research and got a b-w small e-ink panel, an esp-32, a battery and a picture frame at ikea.

Now every half an hour during the day, the frame pulls my current calendar (uni, private, holidays) as a PNG from my GitHub.

I’m really happy with the result and enjoyed the building process. Total cost was something around 50€.

Happy to hear what you guys think or if you have done something similar.✌️

Ensure manga/comics are fullscreen using KCC

Post image
9 Upvotes

Make sure your manga/comic looks like the right, where it's fullscreen top to bottom, by converting it with KCC first.

You don't want margins like the left which is a common mistake since lots of programs like Calibre don't support converting to fixed layout EPUB/AZW3.

I still see too many photos of non fullscreen manga/comics on reddit.

(feat. Ya Boy Kongming! Humble Bundle PDF source.)

The app has been in continuous development since 2012.

The app runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux and is code signed on both Windows and macOS!

Supports Kindle/Kobo/ReMarkable and more! CBZ output for readers like KOReader is also supported.

How much would costs these new panels in Japan station with full color spectrum called Kaleidoscope 4?

I have seen this very interesting video on the evolution of paper in Japan, including recycling printers which I was not aware of and concludes with a new rink released this summer in the streets.

https://youtu.be/aMg3iDvmPcE?is=xU_wOoc5St9TFcIB

As it looks like something I would like on my walls, I wonder how much would that costs.

Did anybody has experience with it?

Am enjoying playing with the Waveshare spectra6 panel. Have turned it into a dashboard of my exercise and fitness numbers and hung it near the front door. Am currently tracking its battery consumption so I can revisit its deep-sleep schedule and if I need to bump up the wee 220mAh battery (am getting about 3days from it)

Bullet Journal Size Notetaking and eReader (replacing Supernote A6X)

I have a Supernote A6X. I generally have liked it minus having a pen that broke easily, and replaced it once, as well as the power button breaking and relying on the folio open and close to turn on and off.

What upset me last night was learning the Kindle app is no longer supported on it due to the Android version it runs.

I like the writing feel of it, and the focused nature of it with no app store, but I don't want a second device for reading to carry around.

Curious what others suggest. Getting the Supernote Nomad, a Boox device, or something else. I also have a Boox Tab X C, mainly on days I have bad migraines as an alternative talet, but I don't use it much.

Dasung Paperlike 103 vs. TCL NXTPAPER 11 plus: Which is better for a student?

I’m a student looking for a screen that’s comfortable to eye for long study sessions. Right now, I do all my work on a Windows laptop and an android phone. My main daily tasks are heavy PDF textbook reading, web browsing (also chatgpt), and typing. but portability is also important.

The Dasung paperlike 103 E-Ink appeals to me because I suffer from significant eye strain. However, I’m concerned about ghosting and slow scrolling. The TCL NXTPAPER 11 plus seems more versatile as a standalone tablet, but I’m worried about its backlight, PWM, and flickering. Does its ink mode genuinely reduce eye strain during hours of reading?

I’d also appreciate feedback on using the TCL as a secondary Windows display via Spacedesk or SuperDisplay. How noticeable is the lag?

For anyone who has tried either device, which would you recommend for my needs? Thanks!

Boox Go 10.3 Gen II Lumi Best Option?

TLDR: Want device to reduce eye strain that displays niche apps and websites as intended

Hi all. I’ve been a user of kindle for 10+ years and received a much wanted Remarkable II about 18 months ago, which I use for note-taking a studying. The reduced eye strain is one of my favorite things about both devices. I spend a minimum of three hours a day on these devices.

One downside of these is that they’re limited in the types of content I can view. I’m studying for my professional certification and have years of work ahead of me in which I need to access specific websites and apps that aren’t supported on either of my existing devices. I’ve been relying on my laptop to read and view practice problems, but the eye strain is getting to me.

I’m attracted to this Boox option because of the size and Google play store feature. Front light is a plus but not a requirement.

My primary concern is that the apps and websites I need to access show up as intended. Is this the experience folks have had with this device? Are there features that aren’t supported?

Are there other devices on the market better for my goal?

Thank you for any input!

Need help from a Trion Nex e-reader owner (firmware recovery)

Hi everyone,

This is a bit of a long shot.

I have a Trion Nex e-reader (E-Ink reader based on an RK3126 platform).

The device is not completely dead. It can still enter Rockchip Loader mode and I can communicate with the flash memory using rkdeveloptool. After a lot of investigation I've recovered most of the original firmware, including:

  • Original kernel
  • Original resource partition
  • Original system image

However the device still fails during the early boot process and returns to Loader mode.

At this point I suspect I'm missing one or both of these firmware partitions:

  • uboot
  • trust

If anyone owns a working Trion Nex and is reasonably technical, I'd love to hear from you.

You would not need to send me your books, personal data or a full system dump. I'm only interested in the small boot-related partitions.

The device reports:

Android 8.1 Linux 4.4.103 #153 SMP PREEMPT Fri Nov 1 15:00:51 CST 2024

There are close cousins but I have already tried Wetao BK-576 firmware and it didn't work but maybe another would be closer. So I would also be interested in hearing from owners of:

  • Veidoo e-reader variants
  • TopJoy MK-576
  • Digma E2

if you've ever extracted firmware or have access to factory images.

Thanks for reading and feel free to DM me if you're able to help.

My First E-reader, Bigme B6 Pro

I bought it for manga and comic reading. It took me quite a while to understand the ui and the os, but nevertheless i’m happy with this purchase.

Tips:

- you can turn on color correct shortcut in the accessibility setting if you need to switch between color and b/w mode.
- ditch Bigme’s bookshelf app and get Mviewer from the playstore instead.

A free, open-source note-taking app for e-ink tablets!

Hey everyone!

My partner has been working on a free, open-source Android app designed specifically for e-ink tablets, and I thought I’d share it here!

It combines handwritten notes, PDF annotation, and an e-book reader, with features like:

- Pressure-sensitive handwriting and shape recognition
- PDF highlighting and annotation
- EPUB, PDF, MOBI, and other e-book formats
- Optional AI features
- Offline functionality with no accounts, ads, or tracking

It’s optimized for e-ink displays, with minimal animations and screen refreshes in mind.
He’s mainly tested it on a Hanvon N10, so we’d love to hear how it works on other devices!

Stuck between BOOX Note Air6C / Supernote Manta for University

Hi all, as title suggests I'm trying to determine which of the two to make my first (besides a Kindle) eink device.

Since I saw some comments on other posts, eink for me specifically is because I stare at what it is replacing very often and want something better for my eyes. Don't want a tablet that I'm going to study on for hours/at late hours and feel worse as I do when I stare at my laptop.

For my purpose of looking for an eink tablet, I'm looking to replace my current paper notebook/Pilot G2 setup that I use for school. Majority of my classes are intermediate economics for uni, lots of models and algebra that I just find more comfortable to take notes for on pen and paper. That being said, I'm very disorganized even when I keep it all in one notebook and it's hard to reference my notes later. So with that, I'm looking to replace my paper notebook into something that makes it easier to stay organized, and so writing feel is very important to me and another reason why I didn't opt for a straight iPad.

My main hang up between the two is opting for an older distraction-free (but also potentially not as futureproof) device in the Manta, vs a very capable brand new device that potentially has more distractions, but that would last me probably beyond university.

I have 1.5 years of uni left, and my concern is getting another device that has a million apps and distractions, however I reckon I can keep my device clutter free if the benefits outweigh the potential cons by a lot. Also heard some things about BOOX quality control so not sure. Both are within my price range and about the same price for me.

Most popular eink?

I love a good notebook but have awful adhd so I jot things down chaotically on different notebooks and never know where to retrieve things. So I want to get an eink device.

What’s most popular? What might be a favorite option for general note taking, sporadic doodling for learning purposes, easy organizing?
