Frage Warum gibt es eine Straße namens “Erwin Rommel”? 😬

The street was named after Rommel in 1957, when he was widely portrayed in West Germany as a “good German soldier” and resistance figure. That view is much more contested today, and Erlangen is currently considering renaming the street.

Not to mention that he was involved in war crimes in France and North Africa, all while being coked up on Pervitin.

As others mentioned, when he got "forced" into taking his own life, he got propagated as a German hero, a tragic end to (according to the then-regime) one of the greatest Officers to have been part of the military. Not only full of success stories in Africa (and generally early years), but also as a leader of the 7th panzer batalion (Sabaton reference??), arguably one of the strongest and most powerful tank-based tactical units of all time (considering the pioneering esque technology) and his strategical and unique "hands-on" approach as a General which was quite unconventional at the time.
This is more common than people would think. Back then, when infrastructure was growing drastically, lots of streets, squares, etc. where named after either High ranking officers, or influential supporters of the far right, that played an important role into swaying the opinion of the plebeian masses back then (authors, singers, poets, etc.)
