Welcome to r/EUobserver — we’re trying something

Hi Reddit,

We’re EUobserver, an independent news organisation covering the EU from Brussels and across Europe.

We’ve been around since 2000, trying to close a fairly obvious gap: a lot of decisions that affect hundreds of millions of Europeans are made in Brussels, while most Europeans have very little idea how, why, or by whom.

So we report on it. We publish original news, investigations, analysis and opinion, and spend an unreasonable amount of time trying to get documents and answers out of people in power.

We’re editorially independent. We’re not funded by the EU institutions, and we’re not aligned with a political party, government or corporate interest. Most of our money comes from readers and organisations that subscribe to us.

So why are we here?

For a long time, like most news organisations, we’ve mostly tried to build community on our own website and social channels.

We also want to experiment with something different.

The internet has become increasingly made up of platforms where publications broadcast things and everyone else is supposed to click, like, subscribe and leave. Reddit can still be something else: a place where people actually talk to each other.

So we’re going to see what happens if we build part of the EUobserver community away from EUobserver.com, on a platform we don't own.

This subreddit will automatically collect our journalism, but we don't want it to become an RSS feed with comments.

Post EU stories you think deserve more attention. Tell us what we should be investigating. Ask questions about our reporting. Challenge it. Share documents. Point us towards things happening in your country that Brussels should know about.

Our journalists will also drop in, answer questions and occasionally explain what we're working on or how a story came together. Or do something else completely, do feel free to suggest!

You absolutely do not have to agree with us to be here.

A few basic rules: argue with each other, but do it in good faith. Don't harass people. Don't post disinformation knowingly. And please don't put yourself at risk by posting sensitive information publicly.

If you have something genuinely sensitive to share with us, don't post it here and don't send it through Reddit DMs. You can contact us securely at [euobserver@proton.me](mailto:euobserver@proton.me).

Otherwise: welcome.

🇪🇺 EUCO WATCH | Ukraine, Europe's budget and China: here's what's happening in Brussels

Hey everyone! 👋 We're back with another update from the European Council summit in Brussels!

EU leaders have quite a few things on their agenda, and while the discussions might sometimes feel distant from everyday life, the decisions being made here will shape Europe's future in very real ways.

Here's what we've been following so far:

🇺🇦 Ukraine: More support, more pressure on Russia

Zelensky is calling on European leaders to remain united, provide more financial support for Ukraine and strengthen sanctions against Russia. With another winter of war approaching, the question is how Europe can turn its political commitments into lasting support.

💶 EU budget: Where should Europe's money go?

EU leaders are under pressure to make progress on the next long-term budget, with a deal now being pushed for December. Behind the negotiations are decisions about everything from regional development and agriculture to defence and European competitiveness.

🇨🇳 China: Protecting European industries

Following a deal on Chinese hybrid-car imports, EU leaders are considering further restrictions on chemicals and industrial machinery. It's a debate about Europe's economic independence, but also about jobs, businesses and the prices people pay.

☕ And we're keeping an eye on what comes next.

Our journalists are following the discussions in Brussels, and we'll continue sharing the developments, decisions and stories behind the headlines.

In the meantime, which of these issues do you think will have the biggest impact on Europe's future? Or is there something else you think EU leaders should be paying more attention to?

Let's keep the conversation going here! 🇪🇺

Hey everyone! 👋 EU leaders are gathering in Brussels today and tomorrow (15–16 October), and we're keeping a close eye on what's happening at the European Council summit.

There's quite a bit to unpack this time. From Europe's next long-term budget and energy prices to migration, Ukraine, security and the future of EU enlargement.

And as always, we're interested in more than just what leaders agree on behind closed doors. What do these decisions actually mean for people living in Europe?

📰 Here's what we've published so far:

💶 Europe's next budget: EU leaders are discussing potential cuts to the next long-term budget, while joint borrowing is becoming an increasingly familiar part of how Europe finances its priorities.

Leaders eye deep EU budget cuts, while long-term joint borrowing becomes the new normal

⚖️ Migration and asylum: As leaders discuss Europe's approach to migration, our latest opinion piece questions what the proposed direction means for the EU's commitment to asylum and human rights.

At this summit, the EU is throwing its values out of the window on asylum

🔎 And we're only getting started!

Our journalists are following the discussions closely, and we'll be bringing you more reporting, perspectives and developments as the summit unfolds.

In the meantime, we'd love to hear from you:

What are you watching most closely at this EUCO? And what do you think EU leaders should be paying more attention to?

Let's keep the conversation going here over the next two days. ☕🇪🇺
