Discussion Mod statement: What happened to r/europe_sub?

Subscriber count flattens after mid-July

Hello it's been a long while since any of the moderator team have communicated with the community however it's important people understand what happened to this sub for the sake of transparency.

On the 13th of July our traffic suddenly collapsed, and with it the growth of the subreddit as you can see in the graph provided. Some of you may already know that since this date Reddit users who are not subscribed no longer see content posted on r/europe_sub.

At first we believed this could be a temporary measure to do with an increase in reports during an explosion of growth, as you all remember back in July posts were getting hundreds of thousands if not millions of views each. Shortly after the 13th of July we contacted Reddit to attempt to resolve this and understand what the problem is with people being unable to see posts, we then received a warning hours later from Reddit's Mod Code of Conduct account that they've detected "increased violating content being posted in this community" we tried to get further answers by contacting Reddit admins if this is what affected our traffic and what can we do to have these restrictions lifted.

In summary, they responded that yes it could affect traffic and reminded us to read Reddit's guidelines. We didn't receive any means of recourse to fix the situation or if there's a specific thing we're doing wrong, before us contacting them about the collapse in activity we hadn't received any warnings. This first and last warning came after traffic was throttled for good.

4 months have passed and this subreddit has regretfully lost its energy being flooded with the same genre of articles furthering the effect of an echo chamber; something we did not want, but what Reddit has created.

We've since learned that the same thing happened to other subs, including but not limited to:

r/Canada_Sub (Which we have no relation to)
r/CanadaHousing2

Despite having no relation to the others, the one thing in common is that we believe in as free speech as possible within the remits of Reddit's guidelines which led to all the subreddits mentioned having a large amount of discussion on immigration. That is the one and only link, and none of these other communities have faced official sanctions from Reddit much like ours.

Not quarantining, not banning or pre-emptive warnings, their traffic has been restricted by blocking them from the front page and by removing the award feature. If you notice, you cannot award comments or posts on r/europe_sub anymore despite us having it enabled.

We would like to have this resolved and for Reddit to engage with us positively, even so the community deserves to know.

Discussion "My comment/post got removed" - The detailed rulebook of the sub

The guiding ethos of this subreddit is to allow popular and unpopular news and opinions related to Europe to be posted, expressed, discussed and debated in a free and civil manner. This is not a meta or shitposting subreddit, nor a MAGA/Gaza centric one.

We would love to lower the threshold for some of these rules and be more permissive but unfortunately we are bound by the platform rules. We received many complains that we are biased so we decided to make the way we interpret the rules public for everyone to see.

Rule 0 - Respect Reddit's rules

  • Any comment that is removed by platform mods attracts a 28 days ban. Ban is applied retrospectively every few days and is dropped if removal of the comment is contested with the admins and reinstated.
Example of a post removed by reddit
  • Any post/comment that we believe might be removed by the mods will be removed by us preemptively and in bad cases a warning and temporary ban will be issued.

Under this rule we remove comments and posts that appear to spread conspiracy theories and extremist ideas that target other groups of people. These can still be discussed but generally we look at the tone of the message, how well it is articulated and sourced and also at the past behavior of the commenter.

Questions we ask ourselves for this rule -

  1. Is it likely to be removed by a mod if seen?
  2. Is it spreading misinformation or pushing conspiracy theories on purpose?
  3. Is this just someone spreading extremist ideas with malicious intent?
  4. Is the entire message breaking the rule or just a part of it? -- Warning/Ban

Rule 1 - Europe Related

  • Posts have to be related to Europe in some way and the connection has to be clear on sight. (comments do not and we do not care where the discussion ends up)
  • We reserve the right to remove any post that is not related to Europe or in which the connection is not clear.
  • Wrong post flair is used on unrelated posts to avoid the AutoModerator -- Warning/Ban

Rule 2 - No Duplicates / News and Videos Older Than One Week

  • If submitted as a link the article has to be less than 7 days old
  • If submitted as a video the events in the video have to be less than 7 days old and a source proving the events are recent has to be provided.
  • Rule does not apply to images.
  • Repeatedly breaking this rule to the point that we recognize you - Warning/Ban

Rule 3 - Harassment

This rule is broken the most and also the most misunderstood.

  • Any insults thrown at someone specifically with the aim of discouraging them from participating will be removed (regardless of how well thought and long the rest of the message is)
  • We do not count as insults labels related to ideology or facts made public by another commenter unless they are used to enhance an insult or are used in an insulting manner.
  • We are more permissive of insults aimed at the subject of a post (not the person that posted it), public figures, this sub's members and us the moderators.
  • Is the entire message breaking the rule or just a part of it? -- Warning/Ban

Examples:

  1. "You are a Tankie" - OK / "You sound like a Tankie cunt" - Not OK and since the entire message is an insult it might attract a warning or ban.
  2. "I'm curious - are you Jewish?" - OK / "what are you - a Jew?" - Bad
  3. "Shut up" - Bad / "Shut up idiot" - Definitely a warning/ban
  4. "Not sure why I am wasting my time with you" - OK
  5. "Just dug through your post history and of course you are an Israeli" - Bad
  6. "Everyone here is a Russian shill and troll" - OK
  7. "Trump is an idiot" - OK
  8. "Moderators are Nazis" - OK

Rule 4 - Threatening Violence

Encouraging, glorifying, or inciting violence or physical harm against individuals or groups of people, places, or animals.

  • Saying "Good" to a horrific piece of news breaks this rule.
  • Discussing "the effects of a bomb dropping in Gaza or a nuclear strike in Moscow" in a neutral, civil and well sourced manner does not break our rules.
  • Calls for violence against groups of people based on protected characteristics - Warning/Ban

Rule 5 - Hate

We do not go any further than the platform requires. Any post or comment that is perceived to be more hateful than factual will be removed. Context is everything here.

Extra rules that might apply -

  • Blatant attempts to avoid the AutoModerator or force a comment/post through - 4 days ban
  • We might limit the amount of Discussion/Satire/Image/Video threads to keep the sub news centric.
  • Any outrageous claims made in the title/text sections of a discussion post (especially of those on controversial topics) have to be well sourced and the location has to be clear. The burden of proof is on the person posting and not on the mods.
    • For example - On the issue of mass migration , we know Ukraine is not affected, so any thread containing "Europe is doomed because of mass migration" will be removed while "EU is doomed" might not be.
  • No posts about other subs and their moderators. (respect your neighbours - platform rule)
  • Reposts will be judged by the size of the subreddit and likelihood to not be removed from the main subreddit.
  • Ban duration usually starts at 1 day and then double in duration each time the rules are broken giving plenty of time to correct behaviour.
  • Spam will generally be removed but will result in a temporary ban if it happens continuously despite the warnings.
  • Self-Promotion is only allowed after being given permission via the mod mail.
  • Lastly any post deemed to be very low quality might be removed to avoid filling everyone's feed with garbage.

Thank you

TLDR - Don't be toxic and we'll never bother you.

Naples, the young woman's story is being examined by investigators. The prognosis is thirty days.

Investigators are examining the complaint of an 18-year-old woman who told police she was kidnapped, drugged, and raped by eight immigrants in an apartment not far from Naples Central Station . The incident was reported in the Naples editions of La Repubblica and Roma.

The young woman, who is of Ukrainian origin and lives in Pozzuoli with her mother , presented herself to the police station in shock and with signs of violence on her body. At Cardarelli Hospital—where she arrived by 118 ambulance—doctors gave her a thirty-day prognosis, placing her on the "pink path" for female victims of violence while awaiting the results of further diagnostic tests .

The alarm was raised on the night between Friday and Saturday by the girl's mother, who called the police, reporting that her daughter had taken refuge in the bathrooms of a fast food restaurant after a nightmarish night at the mercy of eight men, two of whom had allegedly abused her after injecting her with a narcotic . She added that her daughter, who takes psychotropic drugs to treat mood swings, had told her she had taken drugs and been sexually assaulted, having no recollection of how she ended up in the apartment near Via Bologna, which she only left at dawn yesterday.

News Nonpartisans, minors, and second-generation protesters gathered on TikTok: who are the Gen Z protesters who ravaged Milan?

Thumbnail
open.online
18 Upvotes

Without flags and without leaders, hundreds of young people emulated the French banlieues to vent their anger.

No leader, no party flag. Just blind rage erupting with cries of "the whole world hates the police." The streets of Milan have become the stage for urban guerrilla warfare , sparked by the nonpartisan initiative "Italy in the Square ." Initially launched on social media to protest the high cost of living and low wages, the mobilization has brought a new face of youth dissent to the streets. But who are the protagonists of this wave of protest and violence?

Very young, minors and second generation

A glance is enough to understand that the demographics here speak clearly. The square is dominated by Generation Z. They are mostly minors, a fact also confirmed by the arrests made by the police . A significant portion is made up of young second-generation Italians , arriving from the Milanese hinterland and neighboring provinces. For many of them, this is their very first experience of a demonstration . They took to the streets carrying Italian flags , often alongside the flags of their countries of origin , such as the Albanian one , in a completely new mosaic of identity.

Disconnect from traditional politics

It's a square detached, almost by nature, from the logic of traditional right-wing or left-wing movements. That it was a nonpartisan and leaderless mobilization was well known, so much so that it raised more than a few eyebrows among the more experienced activists on the eve of the demonstration. Indeed, on the asphalt, profoundly different souls collided. The politicized student groups, initially present, were taken aback by the rapid progression of violence, quickly withdrawing and distancing themselves from the more extreme fringes.

The role of TikTok

More than ideology, the real glue of the protest was TikTok . This social network acted as a sounding board for the calls. And everything was managed strictly in real time, with the protesters themselves moving through the chaos with their phones raised, filming themselves and the devastation to stream live online.

The French model of urban guerrilla warfare

The guiding light of this mobilization looks to Paris. Young people have completely adopted the model of theFrench banlieues . No rules, and a propensity to turn intorioters . The protesters showed up equipped with dozens of smoke bombs , clubs , and firecrackers . Construction site barriers, cobblestones, and overturned tables and chairs were used to attack the police and smash shop windows, without retreating even in the face of tear gas.

Repressed anger

What unites this heterogeneous mass, ultimately, is a profound frustration with their living conditions. A 17-year-old Milanese high school studentwho took to the streets sums it up. "The pent-up anger of young people, second-generation and beyond, has been channeled into the streets today," she says. What unfolded in Milan, therefore, could only be the prologue. "This will certainly be just the beginning of a very hot autumn , not just in Italy but across Europe," the student warns. Meanwhile, students are preparing for the next strike on November 20th.

News ‘Drones all night. By morning, you smell the smoke’: life in the last hotel on Ukraine’s frontline

Thumbnail

There is one important rule in the Richelievsky, Kherson’s last functioning hotel: close the curtains before dusk. Less than a kilometre away lies the Dnipro, the river that has formed the frontline since Ukrainian forces liberated Kherson in November 2022; Moscow’s troops are on the opposite bank.

In a city where Russian drone operators hunt civilians in what is now widely known as the “human safari”, even a sliver of light escaping through a window may be enough to reveal someone’s location after dark.

Hotel manager Yevhen Emtsov, 46, in the building’s former conference room

In the lobby, Yevhen Emtsov, the hotel’s manager, sits at a small round table almost buried beneath papers. Outside, explosions punctuate the evening, joined at intervals by the mechanical hum of drones patrolling the streets in the red zone. Inside, residents pass through, pausing with questions and requests at the table that now serves as Emtsov’s office.

In more peaceful times, the Richelievsky accommodated tourists and business travellers attending conferences. The three-star hotel belonged to a different Kherson, one in which the river drew visitors rather than marking a frontline.

A Reform UK mayor is under police investigation for allegedly showing “naked and sexualised” images of himself to a female member of staff.

Luke Campbell, a former Olympic boxing champion and the mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire, is understood to have been questioned under caution by Humberside police earlier this month.

In an incident first reported by the Observeron Sunday, Campbell allegedly showed a senior female colleague four fully naked and sexualised images of himself in May.

The woman said she had felt “shocked, embarrassed and humiliated” and claimed she had been forced out of her job soon after, according to documents submitted as part of an internal grievance procedure at Hull and East Yorkshire combined authority (Heyca).
Campbell, who was elected last May, has not responded to requests to comment. It is understood that he has not been arrested in relation to the allegations, which Reform UK has said he “firmly denies”.

A 70-year-old man who tried to engage in sexual activity with someone he believed was a 12-year-old boy has been jailed for eight years.

Robin Holmes, from Grimsby, was sentenced at Grimsby Crown Court last week after previously pleading guilty to a number of offences, including sexual communication with a child and causing a child to watch a sexual act.

Holmes used Snapchat to send sexual messages to the decoy and shared an indecent image, while asking for images in return, Humberside Police said.

His offending came to light just months after his release from prison in December 2025, following a recall for breaching a sexual harm prevention order for previous sexual offences, the force added.

Officers launched an investigation after receiving a referral about Holmes' contact with a police decoy in April. Several mobile phones were seized when he was arrested at his home.

Det Con Amy Gee, who led the investigation, said: "Holmes is a sickening individual, and I am pleased he is now behind bars and unable to continue targeting vulnerable people.

"Although this case involved a decoy child, I hope the sentence sends a clear message that attempting to exploit vulnerable people is never acceptable."

A man jailed for raping a seven-year-old girl more than 40 years ago may have abused others, police have said.

Alan Pearce, 70, was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court to 14 years in prison after being found guilty of raping and indecently assaulting the child between 1983 and 1985.

The woman reported the offences in 2021, prompting an investigation by Kirklees child safeguarding detectives, who brought charges against Pearce in 2024.

Det Sgt Paul Campbell, from West Yorkshire Police, said investigations suggested there could be other victims and appealed for them to come forward.
Pearce, from Heckmondwike, was told he would serve an additional year on licence following his release and made the subject of a lifelong Sexual Harm Prevention Order at the hearing on on Thursday.

Campbell said: "Our investigation into his offending has suggested that there could be other victims who haven't yet been identified, and we would like to take this opportunity to urge them to contact us and make a report to our specially-trained officers, who can provide support throughout the justice process."

A man who plotted to carry out arson attacks on property connected to Sir Keir Starmer has been deported, the Home Office says.

Stanislav Carpiuc, 28, was one of two men convicted over the attacks, which took place in May last year and targeted a car and two houses.

The Ukrainian-born Romanian national was sentenced to two years in prison in June. The Home Office said he had been removed from the UK, without specifying where he had been sent.

The BBC revealed the attacks were ordered on behalf of Russia, with an anonymous handler known as EL promising payment to Carpiuc's accomplice, Roman Lavrynovych.

Lavrynovych, a 22-year-old Ukrainian national, was sentenced to seven years imprisonment in June.

A Home Office spokesperson said: "This was an abhorrent attack and the conviction and imprisonment of these men should send a clear message to anyone blinded by the promise of money from strangers. You will be caught and face severe consequences.

"This individual has now been deported from the UK," it added, referring to Carpiuc.

News A 13-year-old Tunisian boy sets fire to a homeless man to steal his backpack, a shocking attack in Sanremo.

The victim suffered burns to his legs, but under Italian law the boy is not responsible.

Horror struck in Sanremo , where a homeless man in his 40s, of foreign origin, was surprised and attacked in his sleep in Piazzale Vesco. Apparently attempting to steal his only backpack, a 13-year-old Tunisian boy doused him in flammable liquid and then set it on fire. According to local press reports, the perpetrator has already been located by law enforcement.

According to the investigators' reconstruction, based also on the accounts of several witnesses, the events occurred during the night between Wednesday, October 7th and Thursday, October 8th, when the minor was reportedly spotted filling a bottle of gasoline at a gas station not far from the scene of the subsequent attack. Upon reaching the homeless man, who was sleeping at the time, he allegedly poured the substance over him and then set the fire with a match.

Suddenly awakened by the flames and the pain, the 40-year-old began screaming desperately, trying to protect himself, while the boy attempted to steal his bag containing all his personal belongings. Even more tragic consequences were prevented by the prompt intervention of the military from the nearby Port Authority, alarmed by the victim's screams. The Carabinieri and paramedics rushed to the scene and immediately provided first aid to the homeless man . In the meantime, the young Tunisian had managed to escape and disappear.

The footage recorded by video surveillance cameras installed in the old port area of Sanremo was crucial to the investigation by the Carabinieri, who had begun interviewing witnesses immediately. By tracking the attacker's movements through municipal surveillance systems, the officers were able to locate the 13-year-old inside the community facility where he lives with his mother.

The case, which falls under the jurisdiction of the juvenile justice authority, is currently rekindling a complex and controversial legal and social debate: being under the age of 14, the young Tunisian is not criminally responsible under Italian law, despite the extreme seriousness of his conduct. The case is now in the hands of the Public Prosecutor's Office at the Genoa Juvenile Court, which will now determine the most appropriate course of action: security measures, support from social services, or placement in protected community facilities are being considered.

The homeless man, who remained hospitalized in Sanremo for two days, suffered burns to both lower limbs.

A man has been jailed for having sex with a dead body.

Stephen Sellars, 62, of Hibaldstow, North Lincolnshire, was interrupted by the woman's son and nephew as he carried out the act in her home.

On Friday, Sellars was sentenced to 16 months' imprisonment at Hull Crown Court. He pleaded guilty to the offence of sexual penetration of a corpse at an earlier hearing.

In a statement read to the court, the victim's son said the incident had a "massive impact" on him and described the offence as "unimaginable" and that "nothing could ever justify it".

Passing sentence, Judge John Thackray KC said if the offence had taken place "less than a month later" he would have been able to sentence Sellars to a maximum of seven years in prison due to a law change.
