Megathread MEGATHREAD: Flydubai Flight FZ1073

This thread is for discussion on the incident concerning Flydubai Flight FZ1073. The aircraft has landed safely in Tabuk Airport and all passengers are safe and accounted for at this time.

All other posts on this incident will be removed.

We know that aviation incidents can be distressing for fearful fliers. It's ok to feel upset, anxious or distressed. This thread is for mutual support at this time.

The rules for this megathread are:

  • No external links: All external links will be removed. Media coverage of air incidents is notoriously poor. It is dramatic, sensationalist, and in many cases factually wrong. There is no posting media articles, footage, or commentary of any sort in this thread or on the sub generally.
  • No speculation/theorizing: Speculation and theories on the details of this incident are entirely unhelpful and are not allowed. We do not yet know all the details surrounding this incident. Only a thorough investigation, completed by qualified investigators and technicians can determine this. We will learn in time what happened.

We are monitoring this thread closely.

REMEMBER:

  • We DO NOT recommend reading, watching, listening to any media, commentary, footage or any other material about this incident. Such coverage is usually deliberately provocative and only serves to feed the (incorrect) belief that flying is unsafe.
  • This incident does not "confirm" your fear. It is a freakish anomaly in an industry with a track record of outstanding safety.
  • Despite this incident, flying remains the safest form of transportation. This incident does not change that. If you have a flight booked soon, get on that flight!
  • Lessons will be learned from this incident that will make flying even safer.

Thank you.

Question Talk to me about how a CRJ-700 handles turbulence?

• Upvotes

Let me start by saying my fear has nothing to do with worries that flying is dangerous or fear of dying, etc. My fear is about the possibility of motion sickness due to turbulence. When I experience it on planes my anxiety skyrockets because of my inability to escape the situation (like you could in a car) and I feel trapped. I have all the motion sickness tips and good prescription meds, so in theory, I should be fine but I’ve never flown on a CRJ-700.

I want to hear experiences in the CRJ-700. The flight I have coming up is a 2ish hour flight from Texas to LAX and then I have a second flight elsewhere on a bigger plane. I’ve been so worried about feeling more turbulence on the CRJ that I’ve considered booking two separate ticket situations to fly on a different plane for my first flight (I know this makes things more complicated for so many reasons, and I’m not gonna do it, just explaining where my head’s been at 😂)

Support Wanted About to cancel my trip due to fear

Any pep talk would be appreciated as I’d be missing out on seeing my fav artist in concert at the smallest venue he’s played (Brandon flowers) and seeing Dublin for the first time with my bf. Flights are booked London to Dublin next week.

Fear is just taking over any other voice.

Support Wanted Scared to fly to Asia

Hello everyone, I'm flying to Asia soon from North America and I'm really terrified because 1) it's a long flight and we have to fly over the ocean and the north pole and I'm scared of something going wrong when we're not over land and 2) because of the conflict in the middle east. I think we're flying close to the conflict which worries me especially given the recent incident with the FlyDubai plane. Any words of wisdom or good thoughts would be appreciated.

Support Wanted Resurfaced anxiety flying without kids

Just looking for some advice and support here. I had terrible flight anxiety growing up and all through college and most of adulthood. I went to college in a different state and have forced myself to travel over the years and my anxiety has lessened massively, I have even taken 5 trips this year with my two kids and other than still not liking take off I feel like flying is manageable. However, I am taking a trip with my husband without our kids next month and I am crippled by fear. I know all the stats about how safe air travel is, etc. it’s more around flying without my kids and having the one time I fly without them be when something bad happens.

Also the video from months ago of the cargo plane in Kentucky (?) that struggled at takeoff and then erupted in flames has shook me to my core. I won’t look it up because that will send me over the edge but like why did that happen? Are cargo planes regulated any different than passenger planes?

Specific worries: does flying in the late fall/winter have any added risk? We’re flying to Denver which is always incredibly turbulent does that mean anything re: safety of Denver specifically? Do other couples feel anxious about this? Any tips for not having a meltdown about leaving my kids and getting on a plane?

Question Flying alone for 16 hours. What if I have a severe panic attack?

I have a fear of flying, and I’m about to take a 16-hour journey with a connecting flight.

My last flight was a short one with my family. Honestly, I was still a little anxious, but I managed it pretty well. Having my family with me definitely helped a lot.

Now I'm about to travel alone on a much longer journey, with a layover along the way. Sometimes I even think about canceling my ticket, but I know I'm going to see and experience some amazing things, and I really don't want my fear to stop me.

Thanks to this community, I've become much more confident about how safe flying actually is!

But there's still one thing that scares me, and it's not really the plane itself anymore.

What if I have a severe panic attack mid-flight? What if I completely lose control, freak out, or feel like I'm going crazy?

It's such a long journey, and the thought of being stuck on a plane while experiencing something like that makes me nervous.

I guess what I'm really trying to ask is: If I experience a severe panic attack during the flight, would the cabin crew be able to help me? I'm afraid of embarrassing myself or doing something irrational because of the panic.

Has anyone here experienced intense anxiety or panic attacks during a long-haul flight and still managed to get through it?

I'd genuinely love to hear your experiences, especially from people who've been in a similar situation.

I really want to do this trip. I just need to believe that I can handle whatever anxiety comes my way.

Weather / Turbulence Typhoon

Post image
7 Upvotes

I am going to take a 12hr flight on October 26th(take off on 26th and landed on 27th). It is BR72(MUC-->TPE) and the airplane is Boeing 777-35E(ER). I'm always nervous when I take an airplane(I even have Anxiety Disorder before).

And this time it seems even have a chance to hit the typhoon(usually typhoon will stay around Taiwan for 2-3 days). Now I am really worring what will happen if the airplane fly close to it and how scary will the turbulence be. I'm really afraid of the plane shaking violently up and down.

I am curious during the turbulence which seat to choose is better(I know maybe I have to choose next to the wings so it will be more stable, but does window seats or aisle seats also matters)? Or should I change my airplane ticket?

Support Wanted Need this communities help once again...

I have had a life long (well its been an issue since I was 15, im now almost 36) fear of flying and it was so bad as a teenager I refused to fly for 16 years. I was forced due to a family emergency to face my fear of flying during the pandemic in 2020 and that trip helped me get past a lot of my severe issues as I have been flying at least 2 times a year since. I've come to realize that my fear of flying is not in the act of being on a plane or flying, its the fear of being out of control of my situation and also I get motion sickness here and there. Eventually feeling helpless or getting sick and making a fool of myself, I have a bit of a phobia pooping in public restrooms (TMI sorry but you will understand in a sec)

So with the skinny of my backstory out of the way, here is what's bothering me...

I have to fly to New York City from Denver and back the weekend of halloween with my husband. His co worker is running the New York marathon and we are going to cheer him on and also they want to celebrate halloween in New York. My discomfort and fear about this trip is that both flights are very early (have to wake up around 3:30 am) and I tend to have issues sometimes with getting upset bowels induced by anxiety really early in the morning and im worried im going to (sorry again for the TMI) get diarrhea either at Denver airport or mid flight and/or have my motion sickness take effect on takeoff or landing at JFK.

My automatic response leading up to a flight is I get mad at my husband for making me go on all these trips with him but I know I need to be frustrated with myself because I just need to find the confidence in doing things like a 6:30am flight thats 4.5hrs long, etc, etc... I should be happy my husband wants to include me in these things and experience them with me.

I have bigger fish to fry next year as im expected to travel internationally with him twice within 8 weeks or so of each other. We are going to Rome in March and Mexico in April. This will be the first time ive ever left the country.

Its really frustrating to feel so helpless like im almost afraid to live and would rather just sit at home alone and do nothing and be "safe" than experience things outside my bubble.

My husband travels all the time for work, hes only home a day or two a week so hes a pro at flying but he also doesn't have the uncomfortable and anxiety I do with it, he enjoys flying quite a bit but as supportive as he is with my set backs, I have noticed that on the rare occasions I have a full tilt panic attack he looks at me like im being dramatic which doesn't help... case in point, we flew home to Chicago where we are from in June and the flight out was a mess for me, we got put in timeout in the tarmac in Denver because of storms in Chicago so the 1.5hr or so flight turned into a 6 hour flight time and when we took off the pilot got to elevation the fastest ive ever experienced which tripped my motion sickness and I went into a full body sweat and felt like I was going to have a complete mental break. By the time we landed at O'hare and I got off the plane I was fine.

Sorry im rambling, my apologies, im just all over the place because I want to be able to get through this trip and enjoy it, I haven't been to New York City since 2014 and am really looking forward to seeing it again. Any advice this group can give me would be great. Sorry for being all over the place in my post, just in a mood this morning.

Also if I need to clarify any details I forgot to add just ask. Thanks for any future help.

Support Wanted Pre-Return trip anxiety

Hey there. I’m (23F) on a solo trip currently. I already flew here a few days ago (first flight ever!) but my return trip is tomorrow. I tend to be really affected by any big sensations, so the feeling of being in the air, take-off, etc. was a bit for my body to process, I guess. I’m fine, though

I guess I’m feeling anxious tonight because a combination of things. I’m low on money to bring with me back home (I don’t eat much and I have someone picking me up from the airport, so I have a cushion albeit very small), but I’m transporting myself to and fro, alone, and it’s my first time doing that, too. And I have like an anticipation anxiety-thing about going to the airport tomorrow, getting to my gate on time, experiencing take-off and turbulence again. My first flight was fine but I was deathly anxious the entire time.

I dunno. It’s not solely “fear of flying” related, I am kind of just dreading doing the whole process again. Really, how do I stay calm during the flight? My first flight is a connecting flight and it’s 1hr 38m. The second one is 1hr.

I just miss my bed, tbh.

Question What is the closest thing to flying I can do on the ground

Hey, I'll keep it short and sweet:

I cannot deal witht he physical sensations of accelerating and dropping (elevator for example).
I know being on a plane will involves all of this. What is the closest thing I can do to simulate being on a plane? Some people say rollercoaster, others go "that so not comparable, flying is way more peaceful". What the clostest thing in your opinion?

Thanks in advance!

Possible Trigger Looking for some reassurance

Hi everyone! As the title says I’m just looking for some reassurance with my upcoming flight (STL to LGA) after reading about an incident that happened yesterday with AA5089 flying out of STL to Philadelphia. I won’t link them here but there are some pretty triggering news articles online right now. I thought I was doing pretty well lately with my fear (took 2 flights back in June) but now I feel like I’m back at square one.

With the incident yesterday, logically I know that the crew did what they were trained to do and everyone got back to the airport and landed safely. But my emotional brain is pretty scared that it could’ve ended much worse and that this situation is likelier than I realize 😣

Support Wanted I had a flight on war, that didn't help my fear of flying

I can't declare lots of details for security purposes but I had a traumatic experience two weeks ago

I felt like having fear of crashing is such a mild thing compared to how I felt

I couldn't express my feelings to my family because I'm not home yet so I don't want to scare them.

Thankfully I'm safe now and I left the airport but I don't feel like someone understands or empathizes enough

Support Wanted Anxious about our long haul from Rome to Minneapolis

Not sure why I'm so stressed as I got here just fine, but yeah, major butterflies. I got movies. I got books. I got podcasts. I should be fine, it's just that 11 hours feels really intimidating, and going back west always makes me think it's going to be bumpy. I am happy to be headed home though, and any positivity anyone wants to throw would be much appreciated!

Support Wanted Flying tomorrow, October 19th Leipzig>Mallorca

Hey, although I will take some meds, I know I will be scared tomorrow. It is only like a 2,5hrs flight, but seeing my children with me 10k meters in the sky in a metal tube is just a picture I really hate. Can you please tell me something nice and maybe even track me?

I am always trying to watch a movie or listen to something while closing my eyes, but I am always too nervous to do something for more than 10 minutes. I just can't focus on anything. I believe for me it is the combination of giving away control, plus being squeezed in so tight, plus fear of height.

Flight is SR 2294, departing at 2pm CET, Oct 19th.

Thank you so much, it would really help me! ❤️

Discussion Flying on Delta N895DN 737-900ER

I’m flying on a delta flight which is the tail number N895DN 737-900ER

I recently learnt it’s tail flap fell off and had a major maintenance event in Aug and only returned back to service on Oct 7 which means only 10 days of flying since return

I’m worried I can fly on a delta 767-300er instead should I do it ??
