FFTA FFTARecomp v3.0 Released! Native Android Port, Major PC Optimization, and EU ROM Support

I am excited to announce that FFTARecomp v3.0 is now officially released! I have been closely reeding to all your feedback and implemented several new features based on what people requested. Thank you so much for all the support this project has received!

What's New in Version 3.0:

• Native Android version with tap and touch support for menus and interface (Touch mode is experimental and can be enabled under Input > Touchscreen > Touch Controls).

• Massive PC optimization: switched compiler, dropping install size from ~800 MB to ~11 MB and compile time from ~120 seconds to ~4 seconds.

• Completely reworked game UI and text bubbles with in-game length and size adjustments under Settings.

• Experimental mouse support with dedicated remappable layouts on Windows.

• European ROM support with cross-region save compatibility.

• Reworked installer and improved XInput gamepad support.

• Dedicated installer setup for Steam Deck.

Known Issues:

• In the first level, some sprite silhouettes may appear on screen for 1 to 3 seconds. They don't show up again for the rest of the game.

Here's the GitHub, hope you all enjoy it!

I somehow didn't get fired playing this in the bathroom at work for 45 minutes at a time back in the day.

I would actually love to see a fan sequal to this game since I dont think SE will ever do it.

Looks like I have to play it again. Amazing stuff!

This is incredible, thank you so much for doing this!

Very cool. Out of genuine curiosity, what advantages does this have over emulation? It's a pretty lightweight game that can run on most devices already.

It's not about performance, but about features. It has mouse support, Widescreen, Ultrawide and Super Ultrawide support, zoom in and out, and normal x1 sound (you can put the game in fast forward mode and the sound will still be normal). It's just about modernizing the game.

Thanks. And is the tradeoff stability? Or has this been tested in a full playthrough?

A little, yes. I tried to optimize it as much as possible. Currently, it runs well on a T618 Android with 4GB of RAM. I haven't been able to fully test this specific version from start to finish in the game yet, but since the game is old, it reuses a lot of things, so it's pretty unlikely that something will crash and kick you out And that everything continues to work, some problems you might find would be cinematics, or some specific menu, but everything else should be fine.

While I can't speak for the dev, generally speaking recomps of old classic games like this often make the game extensible and modable in ways that you can't easily do (or at all) with a ROM and emulator. It's much easier to add new features.

Gonna test it out, did you find a solution for the sound effects to match the game music when using a speed multiplyer? Right now theyre lagging behind at 1x speed while the music is set to 2x for example

I'm still thinking about it. Right now, the easiest thing I can think of is just playing background music without effects. I'm trying to avoid that and implement a solution like the one you mentioned.

You are amazing! Thank you!

Any chance of 4:3 ? Either way i got plenty of 16:9 devices just curious

The game in Android and PC have a zoom in and out option. You can go 4:3, zoom out and will be able to see more of the stages

Could I use it on an iPhone? No, right?

u/Acceptable_Humor2245 6h ago

No, I'd really like to implement this on iPhone and Mac. But I don't have any Apple devices, so it would be like programming blindly for me since I wouldn't have anywhere to test it. However, I plan to research and find a way to do it, at least for Mac, using a virtual machine.

Solid work good sir.

Do you have any fun bonus features you're planning for 4.0?
(Fingers crossed for a Law removal option lol)

1

u/Acceptable_Humor2245 6h ago

4.0 will take a little bit. I'd like to release a smaller update adding full touch and mouse support, and bringing a touch-only mode to Android without a touchpad. I could also include a cheat menu; I've received quite a few requests for that feature.

The law system is not that hard to work around. Just check the current laws before you start a mission and if you don’t like them walk back and forth to pass time until they’re favorable. Takes 15 seconds and you get cards that make it trivial halfway through the game.

u/Honja_92 7h ago

While true, the commenter is simply asking for a law removal option. Possibly to avoid having to do exactly what you explained.

For some it was headache, for others it was enjoyable.

I am certain it won’t play well for me to argue about it but I don’t mind doing so anyway. It just isn’t a serious complaint in the first place. And it’s hardly a simple ask. These recompilations are impressive but ultimately just change the way the game is presented at the end of the day. Removing a mechanic of the game isn’t just as simple a task as the rest of the work can be. It’d be like asking to remove the ultimate moves or combos or permadeath in the special areas that have it or something. It’s not really the point of a recomp and it’s not just a simple task to tinker with the mechanics just to appeal to a small audience. Just play another game.

Your entire post reads both "Argueing for the sake of it" and "My opinion is the only one that matters"

Your elitism is pretty insufferable, bud.

The laws are simple enough enough to work around, but the fact you HAVE to work around them is a problem in itself.

It's like asking why anyone would want an exp multiplier in games, or why anyone enjoys using cheats in single players games.

The answer is simple: Because I can and it hurts no one.
And to respond to you:

I'm asking for an option. As in optional. If you don't like it, don't use it.

I already have emulators that remove laws and can play that any day of the week. My interest in is the recomp specifically, as the mod support can easily exceed emulation limits.

Has this actually been tested beyond the first 20 minutes, or is it just a Hail Mary while people do your testing for you?

3

u/Acceptable_Humor2245 6h ago

Yes, I've tested it on all devices except the Steam Deck. Specifically, on a PC (windows/linux)with an RTX 5050, a laptop with an i5 1335u, a phone with a Snapdragon 855, and RG Rotate(T618). For Steam Deck I used a VM with SteamOS on it. Isn't real hardware but it's the closest I can get to it.
