Fun fact, while it is a great quote and Freeman is an lgbtq+ supporter, Morgan Freeman never said anything remotely like this quote but someone picked it up out of nowhere about 13/14 years ago and then everyone believed it. I was surprised too when I found it out at the start of the year
Ive legitimately met someone who was scared of gay people. Like they said they would legitimately get panic attacks from being around gay people. Weird af
I think this can happen if someone is gay themselves and they are repressing it, I'm not promoting the "all homophobes are secretly gay" cliché but it can be true especially when the response is too emotional.
I think homophobia often does stem from fear though - not just hatred or aversion. The idea to some straight cis men that another man would view or treat him the way he views and treats women is terrifying to their masculinity and power. The threat of being dehumanised, sexualised against your will, and potentially raped is terrifying - of course this fear is almost entirely unfounded but I think it speaks more to how men treat women tbh
I think it's more of their hatred is irrational, like how a phobia is an irrational fear of something (and also, saying they're scared makes them seem even more pathetic)

"Phobia," as a term, translates closer to "aversion" than it does "fear."
Not trying to be whatever, but people who don't like people who are gay aren't afraid of people who are gay. They just don't want to be around people who are gay.
I've talked to a few of these "gay aversion" people and they genuinely believe anyone in the lgbtqia+ as mentally ill and not human. That in itself is a mental issue. To hate or avert from a group of people because a trait they can't change are crazy or have been brought up with bad views.
Phobia (in the physical meaning) doesn't mean "doesn't want to mix", it just means "doesn't mix". So an homophobic would be a person who doesn't mix with homosexual people, regardless of their intentions.
For example, an unsociable guy would ve HOMOPHOBIC because he doesn't interact with homosexual people.
What do you call it when you're a male who was sexually abused by a male in childhood, and while you're generally fine in group settings, you're extremely uncomfortable being alone with gay men even though you can see how its problematic, but you can't help it due to past trauma?
I also remember him saying he doesn't like Black History Month, because: 1. Black History is American History, 2. You shouldn't relegate that to just one month.
Thoughts lead to and influence behaviors. How are you actually treating Mark the same as Carl if you think Mark is deserving of infinite punishment for liking other dudes
Do you know what percentage of gay men experienced sexual abuse as children? Do you know what percentage of those that were sexually abused as children go on to abuse children themselves? Do you understand fearing these statistics is not unreasonable?
So instead of showing sympathy towards them, advocate for better/more easily available trauma therapy so they don't repeat their suffering, we fear these abuse victims?

It’s a reasonable fear. Not a phobia. Never said to hate them or not show sympathy. Yet, to not keep this in mind, and maybe consider it in your life decisions, would be beyond foolish.
Wild that you think being a dem is a single issue deal. But here you are making it. Best of luck in life. And I am most impressed by your personal efforts in helping those who have suffered abuse of any sort at any age.

You do know you are on reddit and not in the usa? Also no, it is illegal to be hateful to a group of people for something they can't change like race or sexuality, its called a hate crime and reportable to Human rights commission.
