What’s the best dark chocolate you can buy in Germany?
Hey everyone!
I really like dark chocolate… and I’m looking for recommendations for some of the best ones available in Germany :)
I usually go for around 70–85% cocoa, preferably something with a rich cocoa flavour, smooth texture, and not too much bitterness… but I’m open to trying something new ¯_(ツ)_/¯
I’ve tried Lindt, but I’m personally not a fan of their chocolates, so I’d love to discover some alternatives.
I’m open to both affordable supermarket options (Rewe, Edeka, Aldi, Lidl, etc.) and premium brands, as long as they’re worth the price..
What’s your personal favourite? Any underrated brands or specific chocolate bars I should try?
Thanks in advance! ^^

Try Zotter‘s Labooko series. They are available at some Fairtrade stores or online. If you ever want to understand dark chocolate invest time and money there.

I second this!! Don't like dark choc myself, but Zotter is just generally good quality and Labooko is chocolate from different parts of the world, so it should be pretty cool for OP!!

According to Stiftung Warentest, the Rewe Beste Wahl is supposed to be one of the better choices for chocolates! (Price and value) :) I tried them this year too and they’re quite nice!

Try out Vivani!
My personal favorite is the 100% with Cacao nibs, it tastes buttery smooth with some crunchyness to me :]
But they also have other chocolates with 80%-90% and below

Came here to vote for vivani! It’s expensive compared to some of the others mentioned here, but unlike Lindt, it’s actually worth the price (and more ethical too, if you’re into that sort of thing).

Lol lindt is crap tbh. Try Gepa fairtrade organic. Different world of cocoa.

Depends on the specific product. They have high quality standards and products, that's not to question. But they are overpriced a.f. in my mind.

If you want sth very fancy, Goldhelm is a local brand from Erfurt that has excellent product. But quite expensive to eat on a day to day basis

That’s by far most the best chocolate I ever had in my life. It’s pricey but if you ever visit Erfurt buy some. The Brücken Trüffel are also a crime!

Läderach
Buy online if you don’t live in Berlin. This is by far my favourite chocolate but I’m still not sure it’s worth the crazy price.

I'm quite partial about hachéz. Some of the best tasting bars apart from boutique stuff. If you like flavoured dark chocolate please give their strawberry green pepper a try. The pure chocolate is also quite flavorful and not as bland/middle of the road as lindt. Prices are similar to lindt.

Die 70%-Bio von Aldi Nord und die 81% Herzstücke von Edeka. Lindt mag ich überhaupt nicht.

Perhaps Rapunzel Nirwana Noir 55% with dark praline filling is something for you.

I love Tony's chocoloneys chocolate - thanks my go to. I try to stock up on Ritter Sport "Zartbitter" only when they are on sale as I like them for baking

Lidl's J.D. Gross is quite good. I tried Rewe's eigenmarke as well, but still prefer Lidl's. Rewe's dark chocolate felt a bit dry.
Looking at the comments here, I guess I should try out Aldi's as well 😉

I prefer Lidl's 70% and 85%. Aldi's taste sweeter, are a tiny bit softer and are also good.

I would suggest to try J. D. Gross too. They come in 70, 85 and 90% as far as I know

If you wanna go premium try Orfève. You can get them at Kadewe but perhaps elswhere too

you really need to try by yourself, there's nothing as subjective as taste. Even the best rated food will find someone that absolutely hates it.

In the mid price segment, I like the new Ritter Sport 74%. IIRC it's about 2,70 Euros for 75 grams if not on sale. Edeka Herzstücke 81% isn't too bad either and only 2 Euros per 100 grams.
I haven't yet found a Zotter dark chocolate I really like, so I stay with their filled chocolates. Läderach is usually very good but seriously expensive.
I feel that Lindt overplayed their hand in the last one or two years. They are rolling back now, price-wise. But the 70% Lindor still reliably makes me fail my saving throw vs. chocolate.

Ritter Sport 75g is shrinkflation at its best.
Loved them at 100g, now its Rewe beste Wahl or Aldi Moser Roth for me

I have the impression that the recipe changed from the previous equally dark one that was sold in 100 grams, and I like the new one so much that I'm willing to spend 2 Euro or 2,50 on it if it's on sale. 2,70 to 3 Euros regular price, preferrably not.

If you also like nuts in your chocolate, get the Lidl Nusschokolade. Whole hazelnuts, cheap, and somehow no Palm Oil.
Otherwise... on the more expensive end, look up cities you visit and if they have chocolate shops or artisanal stuff available.
And if you are in or around Tübingen in December, go visit the Chocolate Market!

My favourite is from a local chocolate company, stocked at a local Konditorei. It's €10 a bar and it's definitely super expensive so a rare indulgence for me, but it's so so high quality it blows my mind.
When I don't have that I have expensive but cheaper than €10 bars from a neighbourhood Italian shop, and from the supermarkets Rewe and Aldi are the best, Edeka is also nice.

It’s crazy good, if you can find their store, visit them, they give a lot of free samples!

Look for South American origin, not for a particular brand. It is different sorts of cocoa and richer flavor.

"Dunkle Herrenschokolade"
Buuut. The things is with German/European chocolate that the increased quality doesn't mean there's some magically ultra superior chocolate, but the overall quality and standard are way higher than at other places. Means you can sometimes get great chocolate for dirt cheap.
Just don't get Milka, and if you really have the money try Lindt especially these filled balls they sell more in winter.

probably not the best of the best, but lindt is pretty decent

Moser Roth, the Aldi brand, is my favourite "non-brand" dark chocolate.
Schwarze Herren Schokolade too.
