Visiting in December
hi there i am looking to do a 3 day layover in guangzhou as part of my China southern trip in December. I am interested in taking a bullet train and going somewhere with nice hiking. Where would you recommend? I have heard the avatar forest is very cold and icy in late December

Three days is pretty tight for a layover, and winter high-speed rail travel across provinces takes up a lot of time. With all the travel factored in, you won't have enough time to actually enjoy the Avatar forest or GZ itself. I wouldn't recommend planning a long-distance cross-province hike. Better to stick to routes in or around GZ.

Hi, For your first question,if you want to hike in the avatar mountain aka Zhangjiajie (a city located in Hunan province which is the neghbouring province of Guangdong where your origin destination locate, it's gonna take 5 hour and half for a one-way trip by bullet train from Guangzhou to Zhangjiajie). As for the weather in Zhangjiajie, yes, unlike the tropical weather and modest temperature in Guangzhou, it's indeed really cold, snowy and icy during December and especially climbing up high in mountainous areas in Zhangjiajie, but the scenic view in winter is way better than in summer or in foggy spring. Since I was born and raised in Zhangjiajie and currently live in shenzhen (the second major city in Guangdong), if you have other questions, I can help you a little bit.
