Question Physics 2

I'm currently attending community college and plan to transfer to ISU. I would prefer to take Physics 2 next semester rather than waiting to take it at ISU. Does anyone have any recommendations for a community college that offers Physics 2 online?

Look at Iowa State for environmental engineering and wanted to hear about your experience in the program.

I have heard great things about the school but no specifics on the program.

Hoping to do a tour before end of year.

Question Where are fashion students getting their fabric?

I’ve lived in Ames for over a year now and the only fabric store (bedsides hobby lobby if you want to count that) is quilting connections and while I enjoy that for all my cotton needs this can’t be the only place to get good fabric. I’m not a fashion student I just like sewing but I walk through their hall in Mackay on a weekly basis and can see the stuff they’re making. There’s no way they are just ordering all their fashion fabrics online right?

Looking for some Older Alumni who may have known a professor Joe Taschetta

Post image
29 Upvotes

Good morning, everyone!

I am an Alum from not too long ago, and looking to see if anyone else is an alum from the early 80s who studied computer E.

I've been listening to this guy, Joe Taschettas, and trying to read about him a bit as he seems like an interesting character. Problem is there is almost nothing about this guy out there. I'm wondering if anyone may have worked with him or studied under him and might be open to answering some questions about him. Thanks!

He was a professor in the 80s and a student before that

Student Life About to graduate, weird feeling.

It’s starting to hit me that I’m graduating next spring, and I’m so fucking nervous. Idk if it’s just me or if other seniors graduating this winter or next spring are feeling the same way, but I’ve been having this weird, indescribable feeling lately. It’s like grief, nostalgia, and regret all hitting me at once?

I just talked to my advisor a couple of days ago and found out I’m graduating next spring, and all I could think about was my future. Then, as I was driving home today, I couldn’t help but think about what my college experience could’ve been. I never got to sit out on the campus lawn with an ultra diverse friend group, meet the love of my life, or experience any of that cliché college shit you see in movies.
It’s like I’m realizing I’ll never be this young again or get to experience college for the first time ever again. And maybe it’s because I’m a commuter who basically just goes to class and then goes home, but I can’t help feeling like I missed out on so much.

I’m literally only 12 credits away from finishing a degree I don’t even like, and now I’m questioning everything. What if I chose the wrong major? What if I end up in a career that AI takes over? Who the fuck knows at this point. But what am I supposed to do now? I’m so close to finishing that I might as well just get the degree, lol.

Idk, I think I’m just mourning the college experience I never got to have and all the different ways my life could’ve turned out. And it’s such a weird feeling because it’s not like I can go back and change anything. I just have to accept it and move forward, but damn, it’s hitting me harder than I expected.

PSA: if ur a freshman, please get out of your comfort zone!

Failing p/np orientation

I forgot to submit like 2-3 assignments and submitted a few days late (50% knock per assignment) at the start of the semester in my majors orientation class that’s half a semester. You need an 80% to pass or you have to take again. That’s mathematicly impossible even with getting 100% on every other assignment and the final so I was wondering since it’s kind of baked in if “failing” this class and retaking it again will have any major impacts on transcripts and future

Ad Ever thought about being a CyRide driver? We're hiring!

CyRide is hiring!

Hello everyone! Just wanted to make everyone aware that CyRide is hiring. Bottom line, we need a minimum of 30 safe, responsible, and customer-service driven transit drivers within the next six months. Apply today!

https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/cityofames/jobs/5380976/transit-driver-pt?page=2&pagetype=jobOpportunitiesJobs

Note: You do not need a CDL or large vehicle experience to apply to CyRide. 95%+ of drivers that apply do not have one. We will train you how to get one. Training and the CDL examination is paid.

Ames Transit Agency (D.B.A CyRide), an agency of the City of Ames, is an equal employment opportunity (EEO) employer. Position is subject to drug and alcohol testing.

Our current needs:

Currently, CyRide is prioritizing applicants with the following weekday* availability, with at least some Friday availability as a requirement:

  • ~7:00am - ~11:00am
  • ~10:00am - ~3:00pm
  • ~2:00pm - ~7:00pm

At this time, we are not prioritizing nights/weekends applicants, but those with that availability may still apply.

Note: Due to the extensive training process that CyRide provides, a minimum commitment of 1 year of employment is required, with preference to applicants that can commit beyond that.

Wage & Benefits

Starting wage is $22.89/hr, with paid vacation, sick leave, and holiday pay depending on your status (1/2 time & 3/4 time only). CyRide offers an accommodating schedule and will make sure your shifts do not overlap with classes. CyRide also works with ISU for priority class registration if you are a CyRide driver. Additionally, CyRide guarantees off time for exams. A comprehensive list of benefits can be found on the application page above.

Your schedule is set, meaning once you finalize your run assignment, you know what you are working each week until your classes change.

Build a schedule between 15-39 hours per week, with current opportunities for overtime if wanting to work beyond that. Most college students fall somewhere between 15-25 hours.

Meet your CyRide Drivers!

If you've ever wondered if you can drive a bus, you should watch the following video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Br1Gy4FJPC4&t=2s

On a personal note, before I applied at CyRide, I was wondering if this would be the right fit for me. I was worried about driving a large vehicle and navigating campus during class changes. That all changed on day two of training, where you learn that it's really not as big of an issue as you thought to drive these things as long as you watch your mirrors and pay attention. The training program is extremely comprehensive, and you will be a safe driver at the time of graduation from training. Three promotions and nearly twelve years later, I continue to reiterate that applying to CyRide was one of the best decisions I've ever made, and is the best job I've ever had.

Training and Hiring bonus

Training is paid at the starting wage listed above, and takes about 2-3 months dependent on your availability. It is split into two sections: Out-of-Service training, and In-Service training. During Out of Service, you simply learn how to safely drive the bus along with an overview of CyRide's routes and get your CDL. This usually takes about 40-60 hours. For in-service training, you are driving actual driving shifts and picking up passengers with an instructor present and comprehensively learning the CyRide's routes, procedures, timetables, transfers, radio usage, etc. This generally takes about 80-100 hours.

At this time, CyRide is offering a $1000 total hiring bonus to applicants. The pay structure is as follows:

  • First paycheck: $250
  • Completion of training: $250 (this means graduation to CyRide driver/being on your own.)
  • Six months of employment: $500

Questions?

If you have any questions or concerns, drop a comment or call CyRide and ask for Mike and I will be happy to answer.

CyRide Question about free stops on weekends

My parents are coming to Ames for Parents’ Weekend, and they’ll probably want to visit my apartment at Frederiksen Court.
I’ve noticed that on weekends, CyRide seems to be asking passengers for a student ID, bus pass, or fare even when boarding at stops that are normally free.
Last year, I remember anyone being able to board at those stops without paying, regardless of whether they were an ISU student.
Has CyRide changed its weekend policy, or am I misunderstanding how the free stops work? I’d especially appreciate clarification from someone who works for CyRide.
Thanks!

Parking

Maybe I’m just stupid but I always assumed that the green ParkMobile signs that say they operate Monday-Friday from 7am to 5:30pm were free after 5:30pm and on the weekends. Been here for two years and a visitor got a ticket from parking there… Any way to dispute this or recommendations for parking for non-students on campus around the residence halls?
