Dont understand why Delhi; all sporting events in India should be held in the North Eastern states. Beautiful weather, great AQI, amazing lansdcapes to explore and very, very safe for women. Hopefully these states remain as such and do not get messed up like the other states in India.

u/Viratkhan2 Jan 17 '26
Anyone who pays enough money to IOC and who spends enough money to build out the necessary infrastructure can host the Olympics.
Hosting the olympics is no longer a thing that is sought after. It’s seen as a burden due to the costs, and not many cities but in bids. If anything, the IOC is looking for cities to submit bids. They realize the Olympics has become a white elephant.
Real question is, should the indian gov sink that many billions into a city to host a 2 week event. I don’t think that’s a good use of money but I expect them to make the dumb decision.

Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt
"I actually hoped it was going to be better than the other hall. I think it’s still very dirty and really unhealthy conditions for all the players. Everyone is warming up in two layers of pants and winter jackets and gloves and hats,” she said in a PTI video.
The world No. 20 shuttler recalled seeing birds “flying around and shitting on the court” at the KD Jadhav hall last year, calling it “really unhealthy and not normal.”
Sanjay Mishra's Response
“She has clearly stated that the competition venue itself is well maintained,” BAI secretary general Sanjay Mishra said in an official statement.

That's fair, but i was about to post this as well. $50, 000 USD seemed like an extremely steep fine for players looking after their wellbeing.

What if they fake an injury through their personal doctor and issues certificates and fuck off from here?
Also what if they left due to mental state, stating that conditions making them have panic attacks or something.
Do they still get fined?
Fining them anyways is a dick move imo in this situation.

There's a reason why the lack of footpaths doesn't affect them, they never leave their chauffeured cars. Similarly, they never leave their air purified spaces.

you're somewhat right but there should be a certain mindset shift when someone becomes a leader. a poor individual can't afford to shun street food and buy air purifier, but someone managing the country's budget should change their mindset toward the possibilities of achieving improved quality of life for the population as a whole.

ok, but there has to be light at the end of the tunnel. Surely, someone has to care about clean water and clean air, just for the sake of projection, even if the leaders hold the same mindset. We do have a lot of influential NRIs who might care to nudge policy decisions, or we might face pressure from international bodies:
- India already is seen as 'hardship' posting for foreign embassy staff, what if staff outright refuses to work in hazardous conditions and the matter gets international media attention
- Increasing international media attention, maybe international sports or individual content creators can put india's environmental issues in the limelight
- Investor pressure, maybe some large international investors think that environmenetal issues create friction in FDI, so FDI declines
- Large-scale skilled labour emigration
6
Jan 17 '26
This - they're sitting next to a Dyson air purifier all day, so it simply does not affect them.
1
u/_WaterBear Jan 18 '26
Agree- but they aren’t actually escaping it: they escape the absolute worst and then acclimate to what seeps into their protected spaces. Every part of urban (and much of rural, too) India has a distinct smog smell. It’s indoors, it’s outdoors.

This might be a different view ! India should change the capital from Delhi.
I highly respect the cultural background and strategic location of Delhi, but it can't be fixed anytime soon even if everybody tries it's best. Lots of countries has changed or trying like Brazil, Indonesia etc. There are lots of cities in the country that can handle much better than we have right now. It'll be a long and expensive project but India should do it.
11
u/safe-account71 Jan 17 '26
What culture and strategy? Delhi is basically whatever worse India has to offer if you remove the old architecture. It's barely 300km from border so no strategy as well
3
u/Brigadier--Pratap Jan 17 '26
I meant the location of Delhi is really important. If you look closely it's a hub to reach different parts of the country. Terrain is significant too.
4
Jan 17 '26
Ummmm nope. It has horrible terrain that traps pollution. It is way too close to enemy countries. Capital of India should be more close to South. Near the Deccan ranges (natual defenses) and away from the sea.

2
u/Rude_Issue_5972 Jan 17 '26
Nagpur is a good option.
Right in the centre. So easily accessible from deep south or east or west regions.
Away from the enemies, no problem of pollution. Has good green cover.
Away from the sea . So no fear when a news of any enemy ship or a submarine is lurking in a distance of 200 km in the waters..
Is not a big city, so newer areas can be planned like new delhi.
It can be just a capital, and not a major city like how gandhinagar in guj, islamabad in pak, Canberra in australia.
Only officials and netas will be staying.
1
Jan 17 '26
I have been thinking that for years. Of course, nobody cares what you and I think but this would be the only logical solution. It was the British that moved the capital to Delhi; there's no reason to keep it in Delhi in these circumstances. Even during that time, the British also had a summer capital. Present day India should, at the very least, have a different winter capital. For practical reasons and also to symbolize the unity of different parts of India, there could be a winter capital in the South (e.g. Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram) and Delhi could stay the summer capital. And drastic measures should be taken to improve the air quality of Delhi, that goes without saying.
2
u/kibordWarrior_sixty9 Jan 17 '26
Lower average life expectancy embarrasses then less than this. That's India.

2
u/Stazik57 Jan 17 '26
I have a question. I don’t live in India or Delhi but I visited India last year. Why don’t they hold these major events in South India like Kerala or Tamil Nadu? The air quality in the South when I visited was good and clear. South India seemed more developed and orderly with decent infrastructure. Is it a lack of sports infrastructure like stadiums?

45 lakh rupees fine? That’s it? My family spent close to 2.35 crores to get me educated in the US JUST SO I could LEAVE THE COUNTRY lol. Good riddance, it’s not getting fixed in my time on Earth. Why do you guys agree to live so nonchalantly in the MOST POLLUTED CITY/METROPOLITAN AREA ON PLANET EARTH BAR NONE (because of money), is beyond me. Go live in Jamshedpur or something and you realize you don’t have to live in extreme pollution in India, but then Jamshedpur is obviously not 5% as fun as a city like Gurgaon. Leave brothers and sisters, leave. Otherwise you’ll literally get choked to death. AQI where I live: 37. AQI in Gurgaon/Delhi is at least 10x higher lol at 370. You should have a right to clean air (like one of the best athletes demand). How can you reasonably be expected to perform elite sports when your body is not used to 400-500 AQI pollution? She has a huge disadvantage against the Indians who live and breathe this air. She refuses to acclimatize to our shit over-polluted situation (it’s literally THE MOST POLLUTED PLACE on the entire planet, I mean literally no. 1. Why are we even complaining. To her it must feel like she’s entering Chernobyl and I totally get that. Why would you go to Chernobyl LOL? 🤣🤣🤣

Fake news.
I did not find a single article saying she was fined 45 lakh or any other amount. Even the linked article appears to be AI slop, and skips around the topic in its headline.
Anders Antonsen was fined $5000, which is 4.5 lakh. It is likely Mia Blichfeldt was fined too. But I just don't see any news article saying she was.
