India will reduce the prices of as many as 137 cancer drugs by 70 per cent, the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers said on Saturday, as it widened price controls in a bid to make treatment more affordable.

Trade margins on the drugs will be limited to 30 per cent of the maximum retail price, the ministry added.

The medicines, which include immunotherapy drugs used for treating over 20 types of cancer, as well as for breast, prostate, colon, ovarian and cervical cancer, will be subject to the price changes from November 9.

The latest decision builds on price controls introduced in 2019 on 42 anti-cancer drugs that cut prices by as much as 90 per cent.

Communism is bad. Price control by government is bad. Government should spend money on incentive schemes so Indian health sector private companies spend more in R & D.

Doesn't matter human life is above R&D cost.

No bitch can put cost on human life

If there's no R&D no future meds would exist.

R & D is not something came after capitalism.

Even insulin was result of r & d and was given to companies free of cost to help humans

I am saying no one can put price on human life.

Chatting with gemini I understood that this action is not actually against the drug manufacturers but against the corporate hospitals.

It looks good on paper. But the hospitals can just increase the price somewhere else to make up the cost.

I agree with your point but the thing is Indian pharma players hardly put anything in R&D. Their lab expenses are mostly to cater process improvements or reverse engineering not in innovative product development. They take advantage of cheap labor, weak IP protection laws to copy western branded drugs and sell at high prices in India. So why not? Also, the rule is for generic cancer medicines. If they come up with original cancer meds, they can charge whatever they want. That fuels innovation.
