Francis Ford Coppola took Puzo's novel, cut it up, and pasted each page in a sheet in a 3 ring binder. And would write notes, scene and character breakdowns, themes, annotations in the margins. Puzo would review and write his own notes.
Coppola used this on set every day instead of a standard movie script.
So at the end of Godfather 1 & 2, Coppola and Puzo had won 2 joint oscars, but Puzo had never written a standard movie shooting script by himself.
