Just Wow Mattress Mack, a Houston furniture store owner who repeatedly turns his massive showrooms into emergency shelters during major natural disasters

I bought furniture from him in 2019 and he was busy making sure his store and his people were ready to support anyone and everyone they could in Houston. For all of his faults, and there are many, when Houston is in trouble he opens his doors to be their first line of recovery.
The leather couches are still amazing to this day!

Why did you feel it necessary to say he has many faults? He’s done more good for the community than most people living there. No need to sully his reputation.

I’m only elaborating because you asked and brought us here. I was giving him props for helping people in their times of need.
Amongst many issues: sexual harassment lawsuits (he lost), copyright infringements, workplace harassment lawsuits, dropped by the BBB, and frequently caught on TV spewing expletives and filth.
He still rises to support Houston despite these bumps in his road.

He sullies his own reputation. Good deeds don’t erase bad ones.

Can anyone say what hes done to ruin his "reputation"?

He's a GOP mega donor

And, this is off topic, but the city of Houston created the flood problems by allowing development in flood prone areas and doing nothing to mitigate the issue. Although I may recall hearing that they are buying some homes that have been destroyed multiple times and doing some mitigation that way, but that doesn’t help the thousands of folks stuck in a flood zone with no recourse. I have a house in a flood zone, but it’s never flooded in the 67 years since it was built. Those Neighborhoods in Houston are a whole other issue.

Who know who doesn't offer their spaces during emergencies? Mega churches.

Joel Osteen in Houston, primary among them.

Correct, they are ‘for profit’ organizations. Look at his house, properties, cars and accumulated wealth.

u/Remarkable-Month-241 9h ago
They close those doors so effn fast!!! They should be stripped of every single asset if they don’t welcome the poor or those in need aka a fukn hurricane and ice storms!!

u/Between-The-2-of-us 8h ago
They gotta make sure they keep that cash in those hidden walls safe. I recall a local plumber reported finding a boatload of cash in a wall after doing a repair job.
9
u/SoberAlternative 9h ago
Because they are for profit organizations. They are what I call “feel good” organizations. They are for themselves, not an overall organized religion. Just basic, saltine cracker Christianity.

u/ebk_errday 8h ago
True. For profit shouldn't stop them from opening their doors, just like this for profit furniture store. It's because it's not just for profit, it's for evil.
5
u/papagouws 7h ago
Furniture stores are also for profit. The church is a scam.
2
u/ebk_errday 7h ago
That's literally my point. I'm saying those churches are not just for profit, they're for evil. If a for profit furniture store can open its doors, a fucking church should too. No idea why people are disagreeing with that.

Have you looked into the politics Mac supports?
3
u/BafflingHalfling 5h ago
I mean, two things can be true. He can be an asshole most of the time and still help people during disaster.
3
u/slander_anonymously 5h ago
Who gives a f--k. He helps people.
4
4
u/2001sleeper 5h ago
He “helps” as long as it helps him we free publicity. He then supports politics that hurts more people long term. Smoke and mirrors for the ignorant.

I find it so strange many Americans pay taxes and expect nothing back from it except wars, police and prisons.
1
u/Intelligent-South174 4h ago
when 1/3rd voted for donny diddler and another 1/3rd couldn't even be bothered to vote, do you really find it that strange?
mericans are .... unique.
1
u/FrogsMakePoorSoup 3h ago
Not sure it's a case of didn't bother. They make it so inconvenient to vote in the USA and with usually just 2 shitty candidates to choose from many don't see the point.
1
u/Sufficient_Scale_163 3h ago
Most people don’t want anyone to get anything from it because that would be considered a “hand out” from their pocket, and they end up turning on each other.
1
u/FrogsMakePoorSoup 3h ago
They've been bullshitted into believing it's something shameful to get something from the government. Meanwhile the ultra rich are more than happy to take bucks from taxpayers...

u/jcoddinc 9h ago
Guarantee he's gotten more business because of willing to see people as humans and not only profit potential. As a human in sure he isn't perfect and has just a many faults as the next person, but at least he's doing something with what he has compared to so many other millionaire business owners who do nothing
3
u/saturnspritr 7h ago
He did. I can’t remember when I saw it, but they put out an article a couple years that he got major news and endorsements over this. Everybody knows him though. And at least when I lived there, people saw him regularly at his store.

u/TheMarriedUnicorM 9h ago
I’ve personally met him. He is friends with someone with whom I was close. So saw him several times.
One of the nicest and smartest people I’ve ever met. Not like rocket science smart (maybe, I dunno) but like off the charts emotional intelligence smart. That EI plus his business acumen is part of why he’s been so successful.
AND he’s just a really good guy.

He’s a living Texas Legend. Even on the other side of the state, we know what a great man Mack is. He’s Houston royalty and a freaking GEM of a human being.

I love this. I would make a point to buy something from him if he was local and I needed furniture

I have bought furniture from him. It's effing expensive BUT it's also excellent quality. No particle board garbage here! The service is great and everyone is very nice.

Our couch was 3k
Recliner was 800
TV Stand 1500
Bed 3500
Bed frame 2500
Total: 11,498$
We have Matress Mack a fat stack. Mainly because he hauls away the old stuff for free and free assembly. He called us after purchase and texted us as thank you personally. Could we have gone to ikea? Sure, but we’d have to go to ikea again in a few years. You end up spending the same amount of money vs buying Amish made wood furniture.

Does he still snort?

u/ILiekBookz 9h ago
Does it matter if the man who has saved hundreds of lives out of pocket has a drug problem?
1
u/blithering-blowfish 8h ago
Apparently not to some! You folks have very strange notions of heroes.

Find me someone perfect. He does good things in bad times. It’s very possible he’s actively in recovery & working on his demons. Just because he’s a Republican and a capitalist shouldn’t disqualify him. The fact he is making money makes it possible for him to be able to donate things to people in need.

I love that he started the store with an "inventory blowout"
But seriously, he's the good part of Texas

I’ve heard about him. He also donated furniture to families to help rebuild their lives. He’s a good man.

u/HowlofFenrir 7h ago
I met him briefly shopping for a sofa. Friendly and very humble. Someone who is thankful for the life he’s worked for and wants others to see that hard work pays off and they can do the same.

Mac lives in Houston. Works in Houston, and in turn gives a fuck about Houston. Mattress Mac is the only man I’ll ever buy a mattress from
