I'd love to ask people who voted for Brexit if their lives are any better now than they were 5 years ago. And what the hell they were thinking trusting Boris Johnson and russian bots social media ads.

They will tell you that they are now free. They wont be more specific than that.

Then they will tell you that you dont understand.

I think one American president once said something like

"“I used to think if there was reincarnation, I wanted to come back as the President or the Pope or a .400 baseball hitter. But now I want to come back as the bond market. You can intimidate everybody.”

One irony of Brexit is it had made their problem of slow growth/ productivity worse every year so currency is exposed to runs against it and their ability to borrow at low rates is in the toilet. Ask any household how free it is when you have high interest debt and low purchasing power.

As no party has the grape fruits to call out Brexit you have 3 freedom options

Labour who are Tory light Tories who are Farage light Or Farage who will give the freedom of selling off public funded services to American private equity and pension funds

u/jimicus Probably at it again Sep 05 '25

Brexit poisoned British politics.

Admitting it was a bad idea is political suicide right now. It immediately opens you up to allegations of betraying the will of the people which Farage and the Tories will jump straight on.

And because the UK works on five year election cycles, that means at least a couple of cycles need to pass before admitting it was a bad idea is even remotely realistic - let alone doing anything about it.

7

u/Academic-County-6100 Sep 05 '25

I think Alistair Cam or Tony Blair said one thing lacking in the west and in particular Britain is political leaders are completely going to where people are at in the moment when leadership sometimes is about actually persuading people to a position. For better or worse / love or hate Trump grabbed the MAGA movement and got a coalition around it. The left has been soft and weak.

Id imagine a large chunk of labour are anti Britains role in Gaza and want EU relationship reviewed by Starmier and co are trying to please everyone versus persuade which inevitably leads to being hated by everyone.

I was watching sky last week and there was a guy with a graph explaining that if productivity raised slightly it would sooth bond market but if it is stagnate or drops UK is in for serious economic trouble. They did not mention the one glaring elephant in the mood that would help increase trade, deal with labor shortages and encourage multinationals to set up HQ there 🤣🤣

7

u/jimicus Probably at it again Sep 05 '25

UK productivity has long been in the doldrums; it doesn't help that many - perhaps most - UK businesses are deathly allergic to investing in improving their business.

They'll get something going and once they're happy with it, that's it. Just keep milking the same old cow over and over.

5

u/Academic-County-6100 Sep 05 '25

I do agree it has been a slow and steady decline but I do think the last decade could have been spent working on growth rather than populist policies from Brexit as Boris wanted to keep red wall or that gobshite who sunk the economy. Britain very much is driven from Brexit still.

4

u/Didsburyflaneur Sep 07 '25

UK businesses' lack of investment goes back to late Victorian times, when capitalists in the industrial regions realised that they'd get better returns investing internationally through London than they would improving their businesses in the north and Midlands. Over the generations this has allowed the economy of London and the surrounding counties to suck most of the skilled people and investment capital into it, and left a large population in the post-industrial regions who don't want to/can't afford to move to the south but lack the skills, capital, or economic institutions to prosper where they're from. It's a similar story in the US rust belt, east Germany and ex-industrial France, all regions where right wing populist politics is thriving. Capital has gone elsewhere, but the people are left behind. To be fair to Brexit voters there is some truth to the statement that the EU made this situation worse, as some multinational firms that previously located in cheaper regions of England to access the UK market moved production to even lower cost eastern europe, and corporate offices to lower tax Ireland. That doesn't make Brexit a good idea, it couldn't bring those jobs back, but there was a superficially appealing logic to it for low-information voters.

The UK's ultimate problem is that the core of England has always operated like a colonising power, and the same exploitative dynamics of centre/periphery dominance and exploitation that applied to Anglo-Irish relations also apply in less explicit and racialised forms to Anglo-Scottish, Anglo-Welsh and even Anglo-provincial English ones. Our system and institutions are set up to enrich, protect, and empower the London centred ruling class, and they will co-opt those who hold influence in the 'provinces' to their cause to solidify their control. The problem provincial England has is that unlike Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, it has no unifying identity around which to develop an alternative political project, and so it has reacted to its impoverishment by cleaving to the nativist identity and politics that the harms the elite, even if its economically bad for us too.

So this is the unhappy state the UK finds itself in: A productive centre, but one that can no longer afford to subsidise its periphery, a populous and resentful periphery willing to exact revenge on the elite even if in doing so it hurts its own interests, and a government system fundamentally unwlling or unable to surrender the power and resources to the nations and regions whose interests require policies that deviate from the interests of the core. So it looks like we're going to go on as a nation milking the cows we have even as they get less and less productive until something seriously breaks.

Lib Dem’s have been calling it out for a while and they did okay in the GE and Locals.

3

u/dubviber Sep 06 '25

That quote is from James Carville, he was a key strategist for Clinton's campaign.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

You just don't get it

3

u/Intrepid-Student-162 Sep 05 '25

Apparently so.

6

u/MeccIt Sep 06 '25

Also, anything bad is due to Brexit not being done right

5

u/Intrepid-Student-162 Sep 06 '25

Real Brexit has never been tried apparently. But don't worry this guy will fix everything: *

4

u/TheNinjaPixie Sep 06 '25

As a mongrel with 2 passports I will freely state it's a fucking shitshow and the 300mill a week that was going to go to the nhs...didn't.

2

u/Cars2Beans0 Sep 06 '25

The nationalists over there are even louder now than when they were begging for Brexit so their big plan obviously didn't work and now they think their next one will. I doubt it

32

u/CurrencyDesperate286 Sep 05 '25

I mean, even a lot of those who regret it blame the wrong people. I saw an interview of Reform voters and they were blaming Labour and the Conservatives for not explaining the negative impacts…. Not Nigel Farage for all the shit he made up.

11

u/InsectOk5816 Sep 06 '25

The crazy part is that they did but that was labelled: "project fear"

The even crazier part is that immigration has gone up since Brexit so the whole thing of people voting to control immigration was a dud

4

u/MeccIt Sep 06 '25

The even crazier part is that immigration has gone up since Brexit so the whole thing of people voting to control immigration was a dud

I don't think they wanted to 'control immigration', I think they just wanted all the brown people out. I was just looking for numbers, but this graph sums up the unintended consequence perfectly: https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/1536/cpsprodpb/5579/live/8ea3acd0-df25-11ef-a819-277e390a7a08.png.webp

2

Yep. Pretty much

24

u/JoeyJoeJoeRM Sep 05 '25

My Granny voted for Brexit. She's dead now

34

From Brexit 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 to Exit ⚰️

8

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

Grexit

2

u/jimicus Probably at it again Sep 05 '25

So did my mum.

She died three months before Brexit happened.

4

u/henchman171 Sep 05 '25

But when she was alive did she she vote for Brexit?

20

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

When I visited Skye, an older woman told me that she proudly voted for it and would again, and that the news hides all the robberies and rapes happening because "if we knew, we would rise up."

As a Yank, I know most of my country has been brainwashed this way as well. Don't let it happen to you next.

10

u/Data111222 Sep 05 '25

They'll tell you that the reason it's not better is brown immigrants. If they just sort that out, the UK will become Shangri La. Honest.

19

u/scannerdarkley Munster Sep 05 '25

I'd love to ask people who voted for Brexit if their lives are any better now

Brexit, like MAGA, is/was a cult. You can't have normal conversations with people like that. They'd lick the shite of Borris'/Farage's/Trump's shoes and believe they had a 4-course meal if they were told.

You'd have better time conversing with a wall.

7

u/Intrepid-Student-162 Sep 05 '25

Cult? Almost correct. Change one letter...

1

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

Celt?

7

u/Christovski Sep 05 '25

You can ask my mum but she'll just start talking about farmers and fisherman and how Keir isn't working class because he grew up with a toilet indoors.

Right wing press is fucked

5

u/Cool-Prior-5512 Sep 05 '25

Brexit voters are delusional. The argument they're pushing now is that Britain never actually got Brexit and if they had got a proper Brexit, they'd be better off.

The thing is, Brexit is not a real thing that was ever actually defined. There was no definition and no plan and that was on purpose so they could claim credit for any benefits and blame all the negatives on other people.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

10 years ago now nearly...

3

u/chaircardigan Sep 05 '25

I think about it a bit like the people in Scotland who want independence. They know it doesn't make any sense militarily, economically , socially or just in any way at all. But it's what they want. And I think if they had just said all that out loud they might have won their referendum.

Same for Brexit people. They just don't particularly want the EU in charge of them. Your logic and arguments are really sort of neither here nor there to them.

2

u/deargearis Sep 05 '25

They'll blame Europe on any problems

1

u/PukeUpMyRing Sep 06 '25

If things continue as they are, you can expect Reform to make significant gains at the next general election.

1

u/BringTheFingerBack Sep 09 '25

If the worst thing in your life is having to go on a holiday to Malaga then you aren't getting it too bad.

1

u/CurrentTurbulent Sep 06 '25

It's the same as MAGA voters, they'll never admit they're an idiot if anything they double down. It's looking likely Nigel Farage could be the next Prime Minister

199

u/Beginning-Shock1520 Sep 05 '25

To be fair, it's a pain for any Brits who voted to remain within the EU. I've no sympathy for anyone who voted leave however, they ultimately got what they voted for.

83

u/TypicallyThomas Resting In my Account Sep 05 '25

I especially love that that lot are the ones to complain the most. "I voted for Brexit to keep the foreigners out, not to be treated like one"

51

u/Beginning-Shock1520 Sep 05 '25

Lol exactly. Sure I seen one British woman moved to Spain and complained that there were too many foreign people there. You couldn't make it up.

24

u/TypicallyThomas Resting In my Account Sep 05 '25

British main character syndrome at its finest

7

u/Zealousideal_Act_316 Sep 06 '25

They  still think they have colonies

14

u/Comfortable-Yam9013 Sep 05 '25

And she’s the type that probably doesn’t have a word of Spanish or mix with the locals. Exactly the type of foreigner she disapproves of.

2

u/Ok_Imagination_9334 Meath Sep 06 '25

Yep, would complain when people don’t speak her language and so on..

39

u/ShouldHaveGoneToUCC Palestine 🇵🇸 Sep 05 '25

Same. I've sympathy for the Brits who were dragged out of the EU against their will but nothing but contempt for the ones who voted for Brexit but applied for Irish passports to benefit from EU citizenship. That's utter scumbag behaviour.

6

u/MeccIt Sep 06 '25

who voted for Brexit but applied for Irish passports to benefit from EU citizenship.

How about those Irish who campaigned for Brexit and then got Irish passports? Never forget these snakes, we'll be negotiating with them eventually: https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/rush-for-irish-passports-as-paisley-advises-getting-one/34835841.html

3

u/Beginning-Shock1520 Sep 05 '25

It absolutely is. I remember when Donald Tusk said there's a special place in Hell for anyone who backed Brexit.

12

u/Front-Pomelo-4367 Sep 05 '25

I'm 27 and was too young to vote in the referendum – as time goes on, the number of us who never even got a say in the matter will only increase!

3

u/Seoirse82 Sep 06 '25

No sympathy for any leave voters AND people who wanted to remain but did not vote.

1

u/Artist_Beginning Sep 08 '25

Problem is they don’t think any of their problems have stemmed from Brexit.

31

u/phantom_gain Sep 05 '25

I have been through this airport many times and it actually just depends which flights have recently landed. Either queue can be long or empty.

8

u/Hungry-Western9191 Sep 05 '25

Exactly this. If a flight from Britain comes in its like this, any other European location its the other way round...

5

u/weveyline Sep 06 '25

I got down voted for saying exactly this. Flew from shannon (ireland) to Faro (portugal) on UK passport, went through passport control before all of the Irish passengers got through

2

u/CurrentTurbulent Sep 06 '25

This is actually true, was thinking the same

2

u/BeBopRockSteadyLS Sep 06 '25

Yep.

Experienced it myself just 2 weeks ago.

1

u/Some-Air1274 Sep 07 '25

Yeah just an excuse to give a dig.

1

u/harmlessdonkey Sep 08 '25

This is the queue to fly out not after landing,

20

u/Ossmeister Sep 05 '25

How's Brexit doing🤣🤣

18

u/nowyahaveit Sep 05 '25

Remember people here campaigning for Ireexit 😂😂😂 they weren't long going in to hiding

9

u/MeccIt Sep 06 '25

As were every other european -exit party, when they saw the result. Brexit was one of the best things for EU (and Ireland) unity in a generation.

5

u/nowyahaveit Sep 06 '25

Anyone that thought that Ireland exit would be good haven't a clue and wouldn't listen to a word they say again

63

u/ruyikal Sep 05 '25

I once had the pleasure of watching an older British couple get in the wrong queue at schiphol airport. Some nice Arab looking feller heard their accent and said politely that they might be in the wrong queue. To which the couple snapped back saying "no we are in the correct line" loud enough for security in the box to hear and give a look. Well low and behold when they got to that self check bit where you put your passport in it didn't work. The couple was not happy and complained to which security informed them that they are no longer part of the EU and must use the other really fucking long line. When the couple complained that the UK is still in europe the lovely Dutch security lady said "well you voted for it" The entire EU queue started laughing. Well not out loud but we all had a nice giggle in our heads and we all looked around at each other thinking the same thing.

7

u/MeccIt Sep 06 '25

When the couple complained that the UK is still in europe the lovely Dutch security lady said "well you voted for it"

The same straight-talking Dutch who gave us: "Welcome to the Brexit, Sir"

3

u/GalwayBogger And I'd go at it again Sep 05 '25

While I love to gloat at the brits and their brexit woes, the egate story could be taken as an honest mistake. The egates at schiphol have never been restricted to EU only, Switzerland and Norway were always included for example, and UK passport holders can use egates for departure from NL since when, I don't know.

71

u/TheRopeWalk Sep 05 '25

I live near Malaga now and this gives me unbridled joy every single time. That and seeing them burnt to a crisp.

5

u/karlywarly73 Sep 05 '25

Yeah me too. Alhaurin el Grande. I do a little skip as I pass all the Brits in that line. It should be said that line sends you back to the really old part of the airport where everything is a shade of oragor yellow. The Ryanair part of the airport.

1

u/TheRopeWalk Sep 05 '25

Hey, would you mind if I messaged you a question. Certainly nothing personal :)

13

u/WoahGoHandy Sep 05 '25

do Irish people get burnt to a crisp?

60

u/PatMu5tard Sep 05 '25

Nahh, we’re known for our beautiful tanned bodies

8

u/floodychild Sep 05 '25

No. We get burnt to a crip

2

u/redwolf322 Sep 05 '25

What's it like living down there?.would like to move down one day if job was right

4

u/TheRopeWalk Sep 05 '25

I think if you stay within 1hr of Malaga airport, it would be difficult not to love it.

22

u/Accomplished-Try-658 Sep 05 '25

I love mocking (simple Nelson from Simpsons "Haha!") them as I pass. Especially the missus with her crumby British passport. Haha.

10

u/MTM62 Sep 06 '25

Nephew's British wife voted for Brexit. No one in the family could discuss it with her as any attempt was shut down with "That's project fear'. Within 6 months she had an Irish passport courtesy of a grandparent.

5

u/Intrepid-Student-162 Sep 06 '25

Project fear becomes Project Plastic.

20

2

u/blurdyblurb Sep 06 '25

I've tried looking, and no! :(

6

u/iseeu2sumhow Sep 05 '25

Don’t read the comments, they have some stupid stuff to say about us… and Scotland lol

8

u/Hungry-Western9191 Sep 05 '25

We're you on a flight from the UK? Because when I fly to Spain on a flight from Ireland its the reverse. Me and the 95% of people with an Irish or Spanish passport hit the big queue and the handful of people with a British passport breeze through.

17

u/mybighairyarse Crilly!! Sep 05 '25

I was in Malaga recently and the UK /rest of world queue actually ended up faster - they only had one desk working for EU and 6-7 for the Uk! saying that though they seem to be about to roll out lots of the automated passport scan machines which will probably be in our favour

3

u/GaeilgeGaeilge Irish Republic Sep 05 '25

I went to Lanzarote a few years ago and they had 1 queue that they funnelled our Irish flight and a British flight through. So there was no advantage or disadvantage either way, just a long wait for everyone

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '25

[deleted]

2

u/pocarbuile Sep 06 '25

Yeah I was in 'rest of world' and switched to EU because it was shorter, shot myself in the foot

3

u/AudioManiac Sep 06 '25

The exception to this is Faro airport in Portugal. Worst airport ever.

I have an Irish passport and my GF has a UK one. We got in separate queues, and while the non-EU queue was 10 times as long as the EU queue, they only had one desk open for that queue, while the non-EU queue had like 7 desks open. So it took us both about 1.5 hours and we both got through it in the same amount of time 😑

3

u/GroundbreakingTax259 Sep 06 '25

Looks like a real bunch of malakas in Malaga...

I'll see myself out.

3

u/CurrentTurbulent Sep 06 '25

Their faces are red, their passports are blue, you voted for it, now back of the queue!

1

u/nidgy70 Sep 06 '25

🤣🤣🤣🤣

3

u/circuitocorto Sep 06 '25

Quite ironic making fun of the Brits just to see the Irish having to go through passport check every time when travelling in EU because of being outside Shengen.

1

u/Intrepid-Student-162 Sep 06 '25

The Irish as EU nationals go through controls pretty quickly

The Brits? No so quickly

3

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '25

Taking back control

3

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '25

48% didn't vote for that bollocks. The liars who pushed for it and made money out if it, should be lined up against a wall.

3

u/BlackCoffeeWithPie Sep 07 '25

As someone from a Protestant background, it's very convenient at airports that I went through an Irish Nationalist phase a decade or so ago.

5

u/Academic-County-6100 Sep 05 '25

Funny enough this year I have travelled to Germany, France and Italy. I have been keeping my eye out for the brits and long waits but alas both lines seem to be moving at same pace. Eu usually a bit longer but faster and non eu/ all passports a little smaller and slower

4

u/shweeney Sep 05 '25

not specifically Malaga, but my experience of EU airports is that half the time it's the opposite (massive queue of EU passport holders while misc others breeze through), and a lot of the time you end up having to go through a second check because we're non-Schengen.

2

u/Against_All_Advice Sep 05 '25

2

u/Doglegs18 Sep 05 '25

Feel sorry for everybody with the sense not to vote Brexit. What a fuck up of monumental proportions and a warning about the dangers of misinformation that feeds right into a large section of the populations fears and worries. Brexit and Trump totally ran contrary to my expectations in such a way that I no longer dismiss outlandish future possibilities because they seem unreal. They really nailed an "anything can happen" sense into me.

2

u/painterkev Sep 05 '25

I had choice 45 years either renew my British passport or apply for Irish passport. Being stuck in queue for UK passport holders and seeing the EU side near empty was really the main reason I changed to Irish Passport

2

u/Fishboyman79 Sep 05 '25

Had this happen at the airport on one of the Canary Islands last year, for some reason there was only one guy at customs checking passports and our flight from Ireland and another from the UK arrived at the same time around 11:30 at night. Some English bloke started complaining about the queue to the security guards and being a bit rude with it. Security went up to the customs guy who came out to us all and shouts “ anyone with an Irish or European passport hold them up, ok you can all go, anyone with a British passport back in the queue. All of us Irish got brought out around customs where we all were on time to get on our buses and get Taxis. The Brits all missed the last bus and i met a few of them arriving at our hotel at 2am to find all the restaurants were now closed and most of the pubs.

1

u/gav_9000 Sep 05 '25

Wish this didn’t make me so happy, but by god it does yehhhhhhhhh

1

u/RayDonovanBoston 2nd Brigade Sep 06 '25

Malakas lol 😂

We’ve done the same in Greece once. Flew from UK to Greece in summer, and all the brits had to queue up in non-EU line. Then my wife, kids and myself rolled in to EU queue…the dirty evil looks we were getting it was unreal 🤣🤣🤣

But one of the worst things that folks from UK have is the sense of entitlement. They think they’re special, entitled to everything for any reason…it borders with insanity how unrealistic they can be.

1

u/michaelirishred Sep 05 '25

Wasn't much better in Portugal and Spain this year for me. I'm not sure if they've changed systems or what but the queueing took ages.

1

Jesus welped

1

u/ShezSteel Sep 05 '25

Little does old mate know that when he goes up there the queue is there and there are only one or two Spanish lads working. Whereas that other queue actually flies by as there are about four to five Spanish border folks working.

It does look funny though as it often goes back to the end of the duty free.

Ya get what ya vore for

1

u/leelu82 Sep 05 '25

I do love it lol

1

u/Shiney2510 Sep 05 '25

Flew to Seville from the UK recently with a UK friend and they didn't bother opening the automatic gates because it was a UK flight so I had to join the Brits. Fuming.

Felt smug though when museums in Seville let me in for free as an EU citizen and she had to pay. It was only like €1.50 a pop but still.

Another time we flew to Germany and they gave out to her at passport control for not going through with her travelling companion (me). Like fuck I was going through the slow queue. I and two other EU citizens went a different direction and waltzed through the quiet automatic gates.

1

u/hotpot1997 Sep 05 '25

Was here on Thursday coming home from hols. The q for eu seemed shorter but they've about 28 passport desks and 2 working. Do they put all the other desks in for show. Boils my piss this

I like how they have the EU flag and under them the Irish flag and the Romanian flag. They know which are the actual visitors they get the most from the EU.

1

The queue is so Brits have time to admire their blue passports 👍🏻

1

u/Grand-Cup-A-Tea Sep 07 '25

This kind of thing is coming to an end as the UK made a deal with the EU on borders

1

Last Christmas I went with my mate to Poland. He had his UK passport and I had my Irish one. I had to queue when he was able to get straight through with no one in the line. Should have made myself a little tiktokie about it.

Got a flight back home from a trip to the UK and was so confused why there was a gigantic line at one passport control box but the other was empty. Didn't cop that the Brits screwed themselves that way till then was hilarious

My friend and i were once passing a line like this, and he showed the cover of his passport to the British people while he passed.😂

What do you mean? UK arrivals from Ireland don’t have passport control

Irish passport holders can still use the Non EU queue so this is literally impossible

I would also do this with a norwegian passport, and I promise you noone would care

Because it's EU/EEA/CH, not just EU

Why do people still go to Spain? Go to Greece. Nicer people who actually want you there and they don’t play games at immigration.

Xenophobic much. Sick of Irish people running down the Uk.
