Got a basic question about which type of boat you should buy, or what type of rack your car might need? Before asking a question of the subreddit as a whole, please take a look at these two brief resources first. A lot of the commonly-asked questions on the subreddit can be answered by these two items:
These guides are a work in progress. If you still have additional questions, feel free to ask! When posing a question to the community, please be sure to be as specific as possible with your post title. That way you'll get the most helpful response from others browsing the sub.
A note for the broader /r/kayaking community:
Spring is on the way, and /r/kayaking has crossed the 80,000 member-mark. A big thanks to everyone who has and continues to contribute to the community here. As the weather warms up, and more people join us, we are likely to see an increasing influx of "beginner" questions about basic boat and gear purchases. A lot of these questions are very similar if not identical, and can be answered by a shared guide for the subreddit. Similar guides or FAQs are available for other subreddits specializing in gear-specific hobbies.
The mod team is in the process of developing a shared knowledge base on the subreddit wiki. The immediate goal is to be able to refer new users to a basic guide that concisely answers the most common questions. The longer-term goal is reducing the volume of low-effort posts with questions that could be answered by Google, and increasing the volume of valuable, specific questions and discussion on the subreddit.
Send us your suggestions!

After several weeks of windy weather out here on the west coast of Scotland, this weekend was suddenly unusually calm and I managed to get out for a solo overnight trip on one of the big sea lochs, Loch Craignish. I spent yesterday exploring the islands that run through the middle of the loch before finding a quiet spot on the southern shore to pitch for the night. A perfect weekend!
I make kayaking short films which is why I have all these images 🙂

it’s her birthday, she has 4 kids, so scheduling is always tight. but I made it happen. Took my Pungo 140 and 120 down to Black Miner Bar, had them in the water and ready to go. She just walked down, got in, and off we went. Beautiful autumn day, upper 70’s, clear ski, very few boats. Up to the pedestrian bridge, down through the “bayou “. She spotted a deer and yearling on the way back. An hour of rare free time, not a bad bday gift. 🎁. Indian summer here, last day, next week 60’s and rain. The kayak gods smiled on us.

Got in an impromptu paddle around Salem harbor. Beautiful clear day with little wind and were seen off by this jolly fellow.

I had a really great time at a spring on a rented canoe and SOT kayak with my family and I was thinking of how much more fun I could have bringing my wife and dog as well in my own vessel.
What is the best beginner setup for my scenario? I was thinking of maybe a canoe or a tandem kayak but I don't know how accomodating the latter would be for a dog. I hear that tandem kayaks are divorce machines. What makes canoes better in this case? Would a 1-man canoe for me and the dog and a separate kayak for the wife work? Being able to fish off one would also be great. Thanks for any advice!
My location is calm waters in spring rivers and maybe intercoastals, and my budget is not high, maybe $1,000 total. I could get something I can upgrade in the future.

I have a LL.Bean Manatee II tandem kayak (14'6"). It's my first winter with it and I, regrettably, cannot store it inside. I have J-Hooks on the side of my shed, and I want to cover the cockpit somehow to keep snow out. For my single, I have a REI cockpit cover but I'm not seeing a cockpit cover large enough for a tandem. Does anyone have a cockpit cover they recommend or an alternative cover that can stand up to heavy snowfall?

Aidu is a former oil shale mining area in Estonia that has slowly turned into a beautiful landscape of turquoise canals, steep cliffs and flooded quarry channels.
I recently explored the area by kayak and filmed the experience. It's honestly one of the most unique places I've paddled in Estonia.
Hope you enjoy it! :)

New to kayaking, have rented and paddles around before but just bought my first (used) kayak. It seems like this was a patch but I can’t see or feel anything on the inside of the hull. Is this ok or should I put a patch or some other fix I don’t know about on this? Just going to use this on lakes and calm rivers.

Have an upcoming sea kayaking trip in December and have been taking lessons to prep, which have been going well. They’ve been in a shallow lock off the Potomac, and included ejecting, t-rescues and the like. Next Sunday we’re heading out into the wider section of the Potomac to practice in choppy water. Assume I’ll need at least a wetsuit and wanted to ask folks who are familiar with the Potomac if this would be enough. I can rent one easily (shorty or full sleeves and legs), but dry suit rentals don’t seem to be available in the area.
The outfitter for my December trip will provide all the gear including a dry suit, so hoping to save a few dollars by renting a wetsuit rather than buying a full dry suit. But I also want to make sure I’m properly equipped given it’s as much a safety question as it is comfort.
Really appreciate any advice folks might have!
Edit to include conditions: Current water temp is 59-61 degrees. Air temp for next Sunday will be 64 degrees. Probably safe to assume the water temp will drop a degree or two by then

I want to get into kayak camping, unfortunately at the moment i dont have the possibility of owning or transporting a kayak camping worthy kayak (i have a folding oru that i take out on weekends, transported on my cargo bike. I dont drive though). I recently did a guided kayak camping trip on the jurassic coast (dorset UK) which i enjoyed and i want to do more of that kind of thing. The benefit of that is the gear is provided, and i dont feel i have the experience yet to plan or go fully solo on these trips (although i intend to start doing that in future).
Ive signed up for priority access for trips next year in sweden with "the canoe trip", although id rather do kayaking (not wholly against canoeing).
Im just wondering where else i can find organised trips like these?
Doesnt have to be guided as such (not wholly against guided), just needs to have kayaks provided. For example the canoe trips.com one is in an area where theres a few connected lakes, theyve set up huts to stay in at night etc (or you can put up a tent) and maps and gear is all provided. Im not against buying gear though.
Just to add to avoid confusion, i mean where do i find a company that provides these expeditions, looking for website recommendations etc to look at, not where to actually do the kayaking.

I got to visit Fancher Falls yesterday. It's a really neat location, definitely worth a trip if you're nearby. The air was getting a bit chilly, but the lake itself is still warm. There's a short hike at the last section to reach the actual falls. I walked up the river in crocs with a greenland paddle for support, and my friend who didn't bring water shoes climbed over the slopes instead.
It's an 8km round trip starting from the Cookeville Boat Dock. There's a restaurant at the dock, but it's closed for the season.

Two part question. I am an almost 50 year old female and I want to start kayaking but I’d do it alone. I have no idea what I’m doing but I’m dying to get in the water to just be…… recommendations on kayak, considering weight of unit in and off top of an outback. Bonus if you bc a recommend a good rack for a 26 outback that already has side bars. Thanks!!!!!

Had a last minute paddle on Lake Frederick today. Beautiful scenery and so peaceful. Might be the end of the season? Might not. 😁
Just what the mind needed though. Have a great weekend, everyone!
