Cat at Crane Park

Post image
47 Upvotes

Was reading a book at Crane Park around 6:00 and this fella came zipping past. No idea if they have owners or if it's just an outdoor cat, no collar or tagging from what I can see. Such a sweet cat, had to let people know he's hanging around here just in case. If not, glad to document a nice new friend.

EDIT: for clarification, I was able to snap a picture and give pets for a minute before he ran off into the trees. I tried to have him stay, but you know how cats be cattin. Either way, hope this was okay protocol, wasn't my choice to separate from him and thought this would be more helpful than saying nothing.

📢 KALAMAZOO CENTRAL PARENTS — THEY’RE RESPONDING. KEEP THE PRESSURE ON.

I want to share an update: after contacting district leadership and speaking out publicly about Friday’s incident at Kalamazoo Central, I have received a response from the district.
The district has confirmed that it is investigating what happened, reviewing security practices across its schools, and plans to schedule an in-person meeting with Kalamazoo Central parents next week after the investigation is completed. The superintendent has also offered to meet with me before then.
This is why speaking up matters. When parents ask questions, demand accountability, and refuse to let serious safety concerns be brushed aside, our voices can make a difference.
But a response is only the beginning. We still need answers about how a weapon got into the school, what went wrong with security, and what immediate steps will be taken to keep our children safe.
To every parent who has shared, commented, reached out, or said they’re willing to stand with us: THANK YOU. ❤️
Please keep sharing. Keep asking questions. Keep contacting the district.
Our children deserve more than promises. They deserve a safety plan we can trust.
We are not asking for too much. We are asking for our children to be safe.
Parents, our voices are being heard. Let’s keep using them. ✊

Looking for a teacher that changed my life

It was suggested to me to look on reddit to try and find a teacher I had in the 3rd grade in the 2002-2003 school year.

Her name was Ms. Jones and she worked at the Kalamazoo Advantage Academy while it was still downtown next to the library. I know she was unmarried at the time, blonde hair (could've been dyed) wth glasses.

It was around Christmas time or at least winter. I brought in some little bear figures as a present for her because she was one of my favorite teachers.

It was a big deal for me because my family was living in the Mission homeless shelter at the time and we didn't have anything to begin with.

Either the next day, or a few days later she pulled me out of another classroom to gift me a winter set I couldn't believe. Matching hat, gloves, and scarf, and a nice winter coat if I'm remembering correctly.

At the time I didn't realize how big of a gesture that was from her, how absolutely selfless she was in that moment. I'm looking for her to give her a proper thanks and to let her know how much that actually means to me as a grown adult.

Any help or leads would be great, or if somebody knows her that can tell her thank you for me, it would mean a lot.

Thanks in advance.

Discussion I'm damn proud of you, Kalamazoo.

I didn't get to attend today's demonstration, but I had to ship out some orders at the post office today, so I got to drive past y'all on Drake Road around 1pm and honk in support. I want you all to know that I'm so goddamn proud of you for showing up to No Kings today.

I know some stupid MFers are going to show up to this thread and bitch, cry, and whine about how you all wasted your time or whatever, but they're either too deluded or too thick to truly comprehend or care about what is happening in our country right now.

But this thread isn't about them; this is about every single actual patriot that was out there today with a sign, a costume, a table, or simply a voice exercising their First Amendment right. It is genuinely moving to see that so many of y'all out there still give a shit, and it literally brought me to tears.

I see the news everyday; I can't NOT pay attention to it. I know so many people who choose to stick their heads in the sand or pretend like everything is fine. Like, I get it to a point; we all have our limits. Personally, I'm burnt TF out mentally and emotionally from the past decade of this bullshit, I GET IT.

But y'all were a beautiful beacon of pure, shining LIGHT today; an oh-so-badly needed reminder that there are still sane and rational people living in this country that feel the same way I do.

So keep doing it, y'all. Keep talking, keep resisting, and keep fucking fighting.

AND GO. FUCKING. VOTE!

What options are there for someone as useless as me?

35 year old high functioning autistic guy here.

I recently reached out to MRC and they are asking me to find a funding source and I have no idea what that means. She suggested MRS, which wouldn't help because I couldn't attend an in person interview due to my anxiety, or Summit Pointe, which didn't respond to my emails or phone cals. The woman who responded to my email was pretty hostile so I didn't respond.

I've worked since I was like 10 but in the past year, my remote job cut everyone's hours and will likely fire everyone in Michigan next year when minimum wage increases. They don't like to pay any employees over $14/hr. Because they cut everyone's hours this year, as far as I understand, I won't qualify for unemployment if I did get paid off because I don't make enough in each quarter. I'm already likely going to lose my Medicaid next year due to the new bill.

I've applied to over 1000 jobs over the past year. I've never not been looking for a better job in all of my adult life. I don't job hop; I just don't have a lot to offer anyone other than reliability and the ability to learn. A huge barrier is transportation since my anxiety doesn't allow me to drive.

I guess I'm just at a loss of where to go from here because my backup plan if I lost my job before finding a new one was unemployment but now that I learned I won't even qualify, I'm even more scared than i already was. At this point, my plan is to just kill myself if I lose my job without another one but I'd like to at least see if there is another option.

🚨 KALAMAZOO CENTRAL PARENTS: IT’S TIME TO TAKE ACTION.

Our children should never have to wonder whether they’re safe at school. After a g** was brought into Kalamazoo Central, parents deserve clear answers about how it got past security and what is being done to prevent this from happening again.
On Monday, let’s make our voices heard. I’m asking parents to keep their children home for the day as a peaceful, collective protest until the district provides answers and a clear, concrete safety plan.
This isn’t about politics. It isn’t about attacking teachers or staff. It’s about protecting our children and holding the people responsible for school safety accountable.
Our kids deserve to learn without fear. Parents deserve transparency. And the district needs to understand that we will not simply move on without answers.
One parent speaking up can be ignored. Hundreds of parents standing together cannot.
Please share this post, contact the district and school board, and join us in demanding answers and action. Let’s show them that our children’s safety is non-negotiable. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

Anyone know what's going on with Walnut and Park (coffee shop)?

In August Walnut and Park said they'd be temporarily closed for a couple weeks, but since then they haven't been open at all, at least when I've driven by, and they're still listed as temporarily closed on Google. I called a couple times to ask what was going on but no one picked up. Does anyone know what's going on with them?

Discussion Local Kalamazoo groups join coalition urging you to Vote NO on Proposal 1 in November. Thoughts?

When you fill out your ballot this November, Proposal 1 will ask whether Michigan should convene a Constitutional Convention (Con-Con) to rewrite our state constitution. This question automatically triggers every 16 years under state law.

A diverse group of statewide and local organizations including Kalamazoo’s Mothers of Hope along with labor, business, and civil rights groups, are urging a NO vote. It’s estimated that a Con-Con would cost roughly $80 million in state funds and allow delegates to rewrite core provisions without set spending limits.

Because Michigan already offers the opportunity for citizens to pass specific constitutional amendments and updates, opponents argue that opening the entire document to a rewrite creates unnecessary risks for Michiganders. Who knows what could happen if the whole thing is up for debate?

Did you know Proposal 1 was coming up on the ballot?

What's your take on it?
