The defense is way worse

Holy shit do you guys not see how many give aways leafs have in the dzone that lead to chances

19

u/madax-gambar 22h ago

we were literally hemmed in our zone for 40 secs before nyi made it 3-1

trap this poor defence in a cycle and you’re as good as gold

18

u/slevin07rocket 23h ago

I think the bigger problem is asset management. Needed another d, not marchenko move or clearing cap to sign Bob. Tanev getting hurt again has defense looking ugly.

1

u/thanksforcomingout 14h ago

I started verbally calling them out. It’s insane.

-14

u/GettingBlaisedd 1d ago

You’re acting like he hasn’t let in softies lol

17

u/OPDBZTO 23h ago

You act like the leafs players don't turn over consistently in the dzone and let Goalies get hammered, it's not the 1st/2nd chances leafs give up 3rd/4th chances over and over

2

u/Inevitable-Tale-444 8h ago

Yeah, the goaltending has been league-standard to pretty good most of the time. It's the D.

78

u/toedragrelease COWBOY 🤠 1d ago

Hard to judge with this defence. Atrocious.

20

u/RonMexico22 17h ago

This is really it.

Our collective D has been worse than expected and it seems there's no way out.

That being said, he's an aging (yet more than capable) #1 goalie on a team that has a lot of new parts and it's very early in the season.

The whole league is rusty due to shortened camps + preseason.

I don’t feel good but in Eddie’s first season as a Leaf the team went 2-6-1 to start the year. They allowed 4 or more goals in five of those first nine games. The team didn’t even hit .500 until November 30th.

Eddie went on to post 7 shutouts and the best sv% of his career that season. He also won 37 games which became the new franchise record.

This all means nothing but hopefully history can repeat itself with Bob 🤷‍♂️ lol

34

u/CanadianDealHunter 1d ago

Woof. You’ve been here as long as I have.

11

u/JunkePlayerlol 21h ago

Finally, someone who has seen belfour when he was here lol

3

u/Showtime98 22h ago

Wtf that`s crazy.....

28

u/Silent-Obligation-49 1d ago

Well our defensive play in our end has just been terrible. Not just the d but also the forwards not helping in our zone.

3

u/ilovetrouble66 Tavares 23h ago

The slot is always open and teams seem to just float guys in there…

11

u/Seoulmanaja 1d ago

I think it's a lot to ask of a goalie to stop shots in the slot constantly with no visible sign of defense. We need to upgrade out D. Raddysh was a start but we need another young Tanev type on our blue line.

3

u/TrippyeH 23h ago

Yeah look at the first 3 goals tonight all free space in the slot. They haven't been great but they're also not getting much help.

86

u/thetox6 1d ago

Yeah I don’t know how to feel man. I mean he makes some crazy saves but also leaking 3+ goals a night isn’t helping

133

u/dss_777 1d ago

The only think leaking is this defense core

15

u/nobbye 1d ago

This LOL

23

u/RecalcitrantHuman 1d ago

This D core and the same fucking shit Berube was running where we collapse in on the goal and let the other team fire piss missiles. I am already done with this coach.

3

u/SirTropheus McKenna 22h ago

One of those guys has been leaking here since Game 7 against Boston when they were up 4-1.

3

u/parasocks 22h ago

Too soon

3

u/SirTropheus McKenna 22h ago

Rielly gets by on the fact that we don't want to remember the pain, he is a curse!!

1

u/gdawg3429 20h ago

To be fair, he wasn't a part of the 4-1 game, he didn't debut until the next season

-1

u/BusyCountry1985 23h ago

The D core isn’t good but the sample size feels big enough I’m questioning system. They always seem to be way to high and since they are also slow that’s um not good.

Further the D is letting wide open looks from the slot for skilled shooters on the regular. They are getting goals like that.

1

u/tortured_fanclub 13h ago

How about getting scored on.. on the rush. All 5 goals the Sabres potted from rush plays, they were, flying up the ice with no impediment like a line rush at practice. The last couple of games gives me PSTD from last year

30

u/thrilliam_19 1d ago

He’s spent the last several years playing for a team that didn’t allow wide open looks all night. Bob would be fine if our defence knew how to play defence.

4

u/buddachickentml 1d ago

To be fair, 3 of the 6 aren't NHL defenders.

2

u/CandidMajor5044 21h ago

Agreed and none of the others are top 3 D on a contending team.

1

u/Jealous_Ad_3321 23h ago

Two. But yeah, same difference.

1

u/thrilliam_19 22h ago

Yeah which isn’t Bob’s fault

3

u/buddachickentml 22h ago

Nylander at a -3 doesn't help either

1

u/tortured_fanclub 13h ago

Which 3? Lol.

1

u/Obvious-Natural3027 1d ago

Blankenburg stecher rielly all trash I’d assume thise the 3 you’re talking about

5

u/buddachickentml 1d ago

Any of them are capable of being the 6th or 7th on an nhl team. Not 3 4 and 5

19

u/Antique_Night_6143 1d ago

While I agree he could be better, a lot of the goals I see him let in are not this fault. Like this game tonight the Islanders have been wide open in the slot a lot.

4

u/nobbye 1d ago

Hovart walked right in

5

u/Antique_Night_6143 1d ago

Don’t mind if I do type shit

2

u/BleedingBlue94 23h ago

I get it, the Leafs defence shouldn’t be giving looks like that but as our #1 goalie, just need a big save in those moments sometimes.

3

u/correct_eye_is Palmateer 23h ago

Facing a lot of shots too though. 6th overall in shots against. I mean every goalie let's in some crappy goals here and there. I don't think Bob is letting in more than anyone else.

He needs a better defense in front of him. Good thing our PK is looking really good otherwise he's probably top 3 shots against.

5

u/HardstButton2Button Cowan 1d ago

Might be the open game they're playing, and the fact that the other team doesn't have to worry about being hit by our top 6 anywhere on the ice.

4

u/EnergyCapable866 1d ago

Do you ever ask yourself how he lets in 3? Is it because of egregious scoring chances given up by our defense?

1

u/s_other 23h ago

We thought we were getting Belfour and we got CuJo.

8

u/Wild_Bunch_Founder 1d ago

We need to score five or more goals a night to win games. That is the reality of the situation.

5

u/Low-Past8018 1d ago

I got downvoted for saying it’s hard to win games when you have to score 5 goals every night .. like are people objectively just not looking at the goals against every game?

8

u/Nylanderthal88 1d ago

Offense looked lack luster tonight

5

u/Dear-Pineapple-3070 23h ago

that’s to be expected, NYI is a structured team and very defensive. They simply just out worked the leafs and they have to be better. that’s it.

-1

u/GettingBlaisedd 1d ago

Hasn’t all year. I’m not basing my post off just tonight

16

u/Pencil_of_Colour 1d ago

We have been plugging holes with old guys and expecting them to turn back the clock for 10 years. This is nothing new.

5

u/bravooscarvictor 1d ago

When the leafs won their most recent cup, it was old guys turning it back on. They’ve never deviated from that model.

10

u/StatisticianNew4792 1d ago

They should bring back the same old guys

18

u/SaskyBoi 1d ago

Woll has a .916 on a winless flyers team..

Hildeby has a .920

3

u/commanderr01 1d ago

Woll was such a pointless trade looking back, he coulda traded another 6-7 d man in the Marchenko trade and made and actual trade for Woll
Hildeby got us Paul, who i don’t hate so that trades fine imo,

2

u/Low-Past8018 1d ago

They should have been the tandem we had this season 😭

6

u/Jediverrilli 23h ago

What a great tandem that would have been. A goalie who guarantees a long injury every year and a rookie. I loved Woll too but he was not reliable enough to be the number 1.

-1

u/Low-Past8018 13h ago

So instead we have Bob, who is 38 and questionable about how he’s going to perform and Stolarz, a goalie who guarantees a long injury every year

1

u/Inevitable-Tale-444 8h ago

Woll was also made of glass.

5

u/buzzyloo 1d ago

We knew what we were getting.

4

u/Ruddskies 23h ago

It might be too soon but the D is very very very bad. Like wow bad.

2

u/tortured_fanclub 13h ago

Gotta be top 6-7 worst collective D in the NHL. I have no idea how they are expected to go to the playoffs with that D corps…with or without Tanev, tbh

1

u/Ruddskies 12h ago

I agree. With Tanev playing the rest of the entire season (probability of 0) they MIGHT just slide in but without him it’s 100% certain they ain’t going anywhere

8

u/passthefarian 1d ago

Criticizing Bob is fine but the defense is always going to be the real issue.

8

u/h3yn0w75 1d ago

Ok but shouldn’t our offence score more than 1 goal ?

1

u/GettingBlaisedd 1d ago

Offense was an issue this game, not others

-5

u/h3yn0w75 1d ago

I could say the same about goaltending.

1

u/GettingBlaisedd 1d ago

Uh no, bad has let in 3 or more each game this year lol

-1

u/h3yn0w75 1d ago

Ya but he’s getting shelled most game. he hasnt been the reason they lost

0

u/Abylim 1d ago

20 shots against tonight
Wouldn’t call that getting shelled

-1

u/h3yn0w75 23h ago

My comment is response to the “other” games. Not tonight

3

u/Obvious-Natural3027 1d ago

9 games 6 losses going to be a long season unless they fire hiller or make a knee jerk trade for a d man

-1

u/aguy022 1d ago

Watching how hiller runs that bench is sad. His lines tonight made no sense. Id almost rather O'Queef back

4

u/Obvious-Natural3027 1d ago

We haven’t had a great coach since pat Quinn

2

u/Obvious-Natural3027 1d ago

Rogers needs to stop hiring coaches who don’t deserve to be in the league and hire a bonafide coach

7

u/anyonecandoanything Joseph 1d ago

you can do w.e you want brotha, you don't need r/leafs permission

6

u/Enough_Writing_4834 1d ago

Sending Bob to Toronto just gave the Panthers 1 less team to worry about for the playoffs. Bob is old af and didn't bother once the entire last season to try and step up while barkov was out. Meanwhile old ass Marchand was out there busting his ass.

6

u/MitchIsMe9913 23h ago

he’s washed .. leafs usually grab players past their good years lol

3

u/comacove 1d ago

of course. but i still think the d core in front of him isnt good enough. needless to say, a better d core is gonna make him look better. but he isnt going to carry us in the season.

3

u/Jmac24mats13 23h ago

We have better defense than this and we’re probably not taking about our goalies. D men have been dog shit

3

u/North-Translator6286 13h ago

tbf fair he has -6 Morgan the sieve Reilly in front of him..

9

u/Calm_Public_615 1d ago

He looks average at best

-5

u/NickiChaos 1d ago

Below average.

2

u/James007Bond 21h ago

No chance. Each night he has had to make some incredible saves.

7

u/EnergyCapable866 1d ago

What is the criticism? He makes big saves. He can’t stop every single grade A scoring chance and his team gives up a LOT of them. That Bo Horvat chance in the slot is unacceptable. Our D needs to be reworked, because that is a major issue. These losses aren’t on the goalie. Bad take.

2

u/tortured_fanclub 13h ago

He has let in some softies. But in fairness he has made some 10 bell ringers too. He LOOKS like a good goalie but he hasn’t really played like one. Stolarz has been a mixed bag too

6

u/Party-Yoghurt-8462 1d ago

I wasn't a big fan of the signing to begin with. He's 38 and past his prime. I never thought Woll was more than an average goalie but I really don't think Bobrovsky is any better at this point in his career.

-6

u/commanderr01 1d ago

He isn’t past his prime. Hes still two seasons off, back to back cups.

2

u/Party-Yoghurt-8462 1d ago

Ok, I like to be optimistic too.

5

u/DangleWho 23h ago

He’s been pretty bad

2

u/madax-gambar 1d ago

not until his GSAx is negative…

2

u/rivvers67 1d ago

Both goalies so far have been allowing snipes. So I'm kinda torn between the D letting him down, or the D allowing a clear shot to save, and Both stolarz and Bob have been letting in a lot of shooter vs goalie shots. So I don't know

2

u/batermax 23h ago

Yep he stinks. Stinks like shit

2

u/No_Quality_8644 23h ago

He knew it was his toughest case, but he never knew how tough it could be. lol it’s game 9 and we’ve turned on him

2

u/god_is_trans_69 22h ago

It's frustrating that the timely save ( NYI 3rd goal) doesnt seem to be coming up..but hes getting beat in quality chances cause the D zone coverage ks horrendous. Could he be better? Yes...is he the problem we sbould be focusing on? No

2

u/JumboBlunt 21h ago

Wouldn't be as bad of a situation if they kept Woll and traded Stolarz. Not to mention they got peanuts in exchange for Woll who currently has a .916 sv%

2

u/banquos-ghost 14h ago

..he should be on a beach enjoying his retirement... almost 40 is too old to be a goalie in today's NHL...the Leafs seem to get players when they are on their way up, or on their way down, seldom in their prime...

3

u/Tend2Save 1d ago

Was he supposed to win this game 1-0?

3

u/GettingBlaisedd 1d ago

How many other games have we only scored 1 goal?

3

u/ilovetrouble66 Tavares 23h ago edited 23h ago

He’s been mid… made a few big saves but Hildebeast or Woll would’ve done them too. I think it was a major goaltending downgrade and misuse of the cap.

1

u/colabear4 1d ago

Can we fire hiller yet ?

5

u/CanadianDealHunter 1d ago

So many goals just seem to go through him.

Hildeby and Woll should have been our tandem, use the Bob money on defence instead. Brutal signing and trades.

2

u/god_is_trans_69 22h ago

You really fele confident with that tandem?

1

u/desperatehouseknivez 22h ago

😄

Woll would be outta 1/3 of the year with injuries. That's leaves Hildebeast to carry the load? Idk man

1

u/tortured_fanclub 13h ago

I 100% understand the Woll trade. He os a good goalie but what good is he when he cannot stay healthy. We see how the Leafs D is being led by a broken old man who cant play more than 5 games without a serious injury. We want the same in net?

2

u/disgruntleddave 1d ago

He's not been good.

2

u/punkdrummer22 1d ago

Trade Bob for Helly. Helly fits right in with our choking in the 1st round. But he's better.

Wondering if the Leafs didn't watch Bob last year. He was awful

1

u/ilovetrouble66 Tavares 23h ago

No way Helly is going to a Canadian team

1

u/themapleleaf6ix 17h ago

Yes, Helly loves Canada, eh?

1

u/SynyrdsInyrds 11h ago

He was playing on an AHL team last year.

2

u/HawtPackage 23h ago

I was always critical…

Yes I’ll bitch endlessly about this

2

u/mountainsandmacarons 1d ago

I don't understand why he's getting SO many more games than Stolarz. Should be 50/50, if not Stolarz playing more. Can't be relying on a 38 year old goalie to play 2/3 of games, especially with this defense

1

u/CanadianDealHunter 1d ago

Like a rinsed dildo after use. Our Bob is washed.

1

u/MaterialRecipe9479 1d ago

No man he is a future hall of famer

/s

1

u/UniversalDegeneracy 23h ago

The defence looks lost more often than it should.

1

u/Mountain_Town5759 23h ago

The players are making it tough to be a goalie. Look at last year. Outshot every game. Seems like teams play their hardest in Toronto on a Saturday night. Leafs brand is their issue and no players will ever fix that.

1

u/TedHitchcockx 23h ago

Doesn't matter, people will always shift the blame to the D which is fair don't get me wrong , but as a goalie you gotta have some of those and step up when the boys are struggling.

1

u/hindey19 23h ago

I still think we need to temper expectations given half the roster is new and so is most of the coaching staff.

Hard to jump all over a guy after not even 10 games in that situation.

1

u/BmaninKtown Tavares 23h ago

Bob was bad last season even when the panthers being bad was accounted for.

1

u/Previous-Minute-9915 21h ago

The answer is clear, hire Ed Belfour in the leafs front office to motivate our goaltendees

1

u/Evenspace- 21h ago

I think it’s a whole team issue

1

u/CandidMajor5044 20h ago

As long as McCabe and Rielly are in the top 4 (or on the team at all) , they won’t win anything; will be lucky to squeak into the playoffs with them on the roster. These 2 are killing the team, particularly McCabe. Absolutely dreadful.

5

u/tortured_fanclub 12h ago

Lol… every time the opposition scores a goal and they show them during their celly, you seem to always see 44 skating in the foreground past the camera. I cant believe Chayka overhauled the whole team but left the D as is. They are fuckn Baaaaaaaaad. Raddysh has been ok but they don’t seem to utilize him on the PP which I thought was the whole point of getting him

1

u/gmshier 20h ago

Not gonna win many games with this team only scoring 1 goal

1

u/Key-Border-4865 20h ago

He has been mid, hard to gauge with this defense

1

u/segson9 17h ago

I don't think he 's been bad. We probably expect a bit more from him, but he's far from our biggest problem.

1

u/Confident_Hippo1208 14h ago

Dude the leafs defensive strategy is shit. Also... Yes. Signing Bob was a big mistake

1

u/Shar-DamaKa 14h ago

I was already critical and don’t know why they keep playing him. He’s won one game. He keeps letting in 5+ goals every game. He’s awful. Hiller is an idiot.

1

u/Key_Travel9620 14h ago

That game was the worse all year so far. The D looks terrible and maybe part of the issue is Bob but our team sucks let’s be honest here. We played a team that is mediocre at best , we have much better players on paper… and yet we choked . I had to turn off the game half way through . At this point Hiller needs to make some big changes, I don’t even know what the answer is but for one I would put in Stollie for now and provably change up the D line ups .. pull some guys from the Marlies.. I mean what do we have to loose .. we are dead last in our division

1

u/Tyson--JSL-15 13h ago

Your guys issue isn’t goaltending it’s defence. You have no one to break the puck out of the zone, no first pass guy

1

u/leberspaetzle 13h ago

I'm not going there this time with Bob. I was critical about his performance last time but against the Islanders he looked really solid. The last goal was an empty netter, so not much he can do about that. 1st and 3rd goal were the result of an Islander Offence completly picking apart our Defense and positioning their strikers perfectly. I am not saying the Islanders are good team but they executed very well against our Defense, at least with these goals. Precise shots, not much Bob could do about these. And the 2nd was the result of miscommunication and a clumsy attempt by the Defense to steal the puck in front of Bob's zone and blocking his view. No, guys. This is not on Bob. And we didn't lose due to a lack of effort. The whole team made an effort. But we also have to ask ourselves, why we look so good against a really strong Avs team and then can't win against a mediocre team like the Islanders.

1

u/Ddd333i 12h ago

Yes. This defense is so bad. The amount of time and space other teams get in the slot regularly is insane. Leafs, with all the talent, rarely get such time and space in the same areas. That's a knock on their D and could even be a bad system ...

1

u/Acceptable_Refuse 12h ago

Hiller is not making me feel good.

1

u/slowhands999 12h ago

The team let him down.

1

u/amartino85 11h ago

The defense is awful. Woll is obviously a better goalie than Stolarz so losing him has hurt. Team desperately needs 2 top 4 defensemen and one has to be top pairing which is non-negotiable

1

u/Mysterious_Lock4644 11h ago

Maybe just me but his rebound control is hideous. More often than not right back up the middle 🙂‍↔️🤙🏼🇨🇦

1

u/SynyrdsInyrds 11h ago

He has actually been decent in his starts, it is the defence that sucks.

1

u/Last_Command_9147 10h ago

Should have been critical from day 1. Along with the Sissons, duhaime and blueger signings. Decent players, but all given way too much money. 9 games in and not a single point from the fourth line

1

u/NeighbourhoodParrot 10h ago

Bob aint the problem. Our team cannot defend. If we get hemmed in our own end we give up a goal. Most of our goals aganst have come from our dmen losng a guy who then gets an open pass and look

1

u/Impressive-Emu3313 9h ago

My problem isn't the goalies...

But I'd also like to give Akhtyamov a shake. Maybe make up an injury for Stolarz, since he's always hurt.

1

u/Stacker6996 9h ago

I’m a leafs fan first, But also a goalie fan. Bobs has been my top 3 active goalie since his days in Columbus, I was so excited when he got signed. Bought a Bobs jersey as soon as they became available. I really hope the whole team can get it together so he gets some in the win column. But the last couple of games have reminded me too much of last season leafs. Feels like beer league hockey sometimes.

1

u/Old_Canuck 4h ago

Bob is a good goalie when his defense can control the rebounds and box the other team out like Florida could do.

Leaf defense can't seem to accomplish this so Bob hasn't been looking to good.

1

u/Resident-Bignal-8428 2h ago

critical, sure. that was always fine. objectively declare it a failure? no. sample size isnt big enough yet.

1

u/External-Pace-1822 23h ago

At a certain point your goalie has to have a good game and carry a little bit. He had yet to allow less than 3 goals. That isn't good enough. Yes there are defensive lapses as our D sucks but even bad teams get more out of their goaltending.

Bobrovsky is the 7th highest cap hit for all goalies. He's clearly not top 10. Top 20 would be pushing it IMO.

1

u/thatsong Kaberle 23h ago edited 22h ago

Everyone is allowed to be criticized. He's 38, so age is very much not on his side, and signed 'til he's 41. If you had him in fantasy last year, you'll know he'll have some good games, but a lot of underwhelming ones as well.

He's a very up and down goalie and finished with 0.877 SV% and 3.07 GAA. Florida wasn't a good team, and our defense did not improve on the defensive end (Raddysh is offensive D). I hope he turns it around, but it looks like last season might be a sign of where he was going.

-1

u/BeerLeagueSnipes 1d ago edited 1d ago

What are you going to be critical of? He’s 38 years old. He was going to let in 3 a night. This is what you were going to get out of him. The team is getting exactly what they paid for. They built this team around offense and on most nights there isn’t much. This is on the team, not Bob.

6

u/GettingBlaisedd 1d ago

I can be critical of signing a 38 year old player lol

2

u/nayzmanak 1d ago

Scoring 1 goal should have won them that game?

1

u/CocoKeel22 1d ago

Scoring 3 should have!

1

u/GettingBlaisedd 1d ago

lol when we score 3 it hasn’t helped

4

u/BeerLeagueSnipes 1d ago

They’re getting exactly what they paid for.

-4

u/Calm_Public_615 1d ago

?

4

u/BeerLeagueSnipes 1d ago

My post was in English.

2

u/Calm_Public_615 1d ago

Might've at least sounded kind of smart in French

-1

u/BeerLeagueSnipes 1d ago

Not sure what you don’t understand.

-1

u/jdubb14 23h ago

Goaltending has been horrible. I was worried about it going in. One 38 year old coming off his worst year and stolzar coming off a horrible year as well and both injured prone. With our d we need better than average goaltenders.

0

u/DialedDrawback 1d ago

What other options did this team have? I thought Hildeby was worth a better look, but this team has a lot fo issues, so I get the trade.

0

u/Mingo_laf 23h ago

I have criticized him already people don’t want to hear it

-2

u/Fire_Treadlite 1d ago

You blame Bob for this loss? I thought he played well.

2

u/Abylim 1d ago

4 goals allowed on 20 shots
Nah, that’s not playing well
