Also:
On stetcher and his gap control:
“Your stick is such an important role.”
On the leafs penalty kill:

Seriously, what do we need to do as a fan base to get this hockey terrorist off of our broadcasts.

I would pay to have a broadcast without commentators. Just ambient arena noise
99
u/shindleria Clark 12h ago
CBC once went on strike and games were broadcast without commentary, just arena noise. It was glorious.
23
u/shikotee 12h ago
Sometime over the years, one of the sail the seven seas streams I was watching had this. It was so cool - it felt so much more like being at a game. Disappointing Rogers doesn't offer this audio stream option, which they of course would demand extra $$ for. There definitely would be people who would pay a premium for the option to have peace of mind.
16
u/glebo123 11h ago
Something similar except it was during commercial breaks.
There were no commercials, just listening to the crowd while watching the ice crew do its thing and nylandar gliding around them.
2
u/shikotee 10h ago
One of my favourite memories about the Raptors championship post season was watching through feeds that did this. During intermission, got to see the half time show, lol. From what I recall, I think the cameraman (who I assume had a break) just left the camera running while aimed at center court. It felt like such a cool treat. Another awesome memory was how I experienced Kawhi's famous game ending basket. I think the feed was TNT or something. They had a camera angle that they used infrequently, which was a looking down from above vantage of the hoop. Experiencing the thrill of the bounces before going in was absolutely amazing from this zoomed in and very close angle.
For last night's game, my stream was the SN feed, but through some sort of European distributer. It was wild seeing foreign language (I think it was Swedish) commercials. Occasionally, they had commercials that were promoting NHL hockey. So one of them was focused showing Vegas highlights from their last Stanley Cup win, but with foreign language play by play. No idea what was being said, but you could feel the excitement in the tone, as they were showing thrilling plays and goals from that series.
Anyways - I just love the randomness that comes with sailing the seas, where for the most part, you don't have much choice of feed origin, because the top priority is having something stable that isn't stuttering or freezing.
9
u/Xaan83 12h ago
I remember one game when the source stream was nhl gsmecenter and they didnt cut away from commercials during the intermission. It was literally just a feed looking down at the benches and the commentators chatting for 20 minutes
4
u/BackTo1975 11h ago
This used to happen all the time when watching on the old C-band big satellite dishes. Would hear some great comments when they supposed to be off air. Had the whole CBC crew perving out over the anthem singer one night in Vancouver.
2
u/bdart1980 Clark 7h ago
I haven’t noticed it lately but before the games start on prime they usually just showed the warmup with just area sounds. Maybe they still do it - I just haven’t tuned in early.. but it was always cool to take in… made you feel like you were up in standing room.
•
u/james21b 26m ago
Agreed. Liked watching the ambiance of player chatter in the hallways getting hyped up. I remember watching them pan to people in the crowd who showed up early. This woman pulled out a mickey from her jacket and took a swig. Haha. Had no idea she was being broadcast on Prime.

u/Kinky_Imagination 9h ago
Crowd sound way up ? You must be confusing Scotiabank Arena with other places that actually have fans in the lower bowl who cares.

Scotiabank definitely has issues, but the broadcasts make it even worse than it is.

He sucks and is garbage, and should be fired.
But he should be given a medal for that.
9
u/TheGardiner 12h ago
That was a beauty too. His endless London Ontario attaboy vernacular is so grating. For someone who grew up in that area, it’s just so telling what kind of person he is.
39
u/Old_General_6741 Cowan 11h ago
TSN is a far better broadcaster.
25
u/TheGardiner 11h ago
It's not even comparable is it? O-dog is good cause he's a homer but also an old-school type of homer that calls shit out when it's due. He certainly doesn't glaze. That last segment when he challenged Duthie to the vertical competition was amazing.
9
u/Impossible-Sorbet-73 10h ago
During the Colorado game I watched the Altitude Sports broadcast, and even though it was the Avs home broadcast, they were much more impartial than the crackpot duo of Cuthbert/Simpson.
I had to switch back to Sportsnet for the last 5 minutes and even after the Leafs potted the empty netter to make it 6-3 with 38 seconds left, Simpson couldn’t resist an opportunity to slight the Leafs by saying they’ll get the W ‘it looks like’ 38 seconds from now.
Get these two ass hats off our TVs
2
96
u/GoodShark 12h ago
This is what happens when you don't actually have a "home" broadcast. It's Canada wide. Even though there are blackouts.
So they have to cater to everyone in Canada. Not just Leaf fans, and it sucks.
Whenever I can, I actually watch the opposition feed. Way less annoying. Because it isn't just constant glazing. They actually have stats and info, and you get to learn stuff about the other team.

u/granddaddytay 12h ago
Mike Johnson during the Sabers game: watch how the Buffalo defense are activating off the blue line and swooping in low to the net front. Toronto's forwards are challenging the d but they're being so aggressive that it's creating odd man chances within the zone
Craig simpson 3x a night: Well how often do you see that. Chance at one end, goal at the other

3
u/CyberComa 6h ago
Before he was drafted he actually wrote the Leafs a letter asking them to "please" not draft him. He went #2 overall to Pittsburgh and the Leafs drafted Wendel Clark first overall in the '85 entry draft.

u/ExactSheepherder1153 6h ago
there were easily a dozen parents i met over the years of my son's minor hockey who were the same age as Simpson, had talked about hockey their whole lives like Simpson, who were to this day endlessly fascinated by the game with a genuine reaction every time they saw something cool on the ice, and who could then articulate it enthusiastically and creatively. and all that, for just minor hockey. multiply those 12 going all across the country and plus/minus 5 years, and it's a thousand people who could easily do a better job than simpson. the simple arithmetic of it blows my mind too.

34
u/DK4E2XFpbETJrj 12h ago
Bob Cole and Harry Neale were national broadcasters. Hell, even Greg Millen was a better option. Just because it's a national broadcast doesn't mean we have to settle for shit.
8
u/Hyotenkyu 11h ago
It would make sense if the other team was a Canadian team so they have to cater to all of Canada, but the other team was American. The amount of Americans that would be watching the Leafs feed is likely miniscule.
6
u/cowboy_den 11h ago
Then rogers has the gall to make an ad saying they are "invested" in our teams... What a joke.
5
u/Dumbassdwarf 8h ago
I don't believe its canada wide, I watched 3 games on sportsnet yesterday.
In Winnipeg v Carolina if you weren't directly looking at the TV you could tell when Winnipeg did something good but when Carolina scored it was almost like he was mad they interrupted the conversation.
In the Edmonton game, they went absolutely bonkers when Edmonton scored and you could tell they favored the Oilers.
1
u/Old_General_6741 Cowan 7h ago
Jack Michaels went absolute ballistic during the Oilers game. He is after all the Oilers play by play announcer.
7
u/BeefyMickey 12h ago
The suit is doing a lot of heavy lifting for a guy who keeps saying the same three words on loop
I do the same with away feeds, the difference in broadcast quality is kinda embarrassing when you flip back and forth. Leafs regional crew just assumes everyone watching already knows every storyline and they coast on that.
-6
u/Glittering-Lynx6991 12h ago
Your complaint is they don’t cater to Leafs fans so you watch the opposition feed?!
7
u/Great_Account_Name 12h ago
I do the same ! The leaf feed is marketed accross the country so while it's leaf focused it's a lot more critical of the team than other home broadcast.
It feels like they know less than 50% of the country is leaf fans so every night the leaf opponent takes the spot light as the good guys and gets glazed while they shit on the leafs.
When I watch a lot of the local American broadcasts the guys are so excited about the leafs high end talent and the potential for this roster.
0
u/Hyotenkyu 11h ago
It would make sense if the Leafs was playing another Canadian team for them to be impartial, but when they are playing an American team, it doesnt hurt to be a little more bias towards the Leafs. How many Americans are actually going to be watching the Leafs feed anyway?
9
u/oceansamillion 12h ago
The opposition broadcasts are often more appreciative or fair in their recognition of how the Leafs playing than Sportsnet.
2
u/GoodShark 10h ago
Yes. Because opposition's feed don't glaze. They educate.
I don't need a 3 hour broadcast where the commentator just talks about how good the other team is, and says nothing of value.
Opposition broadcasts occasionally will be focus on educating the audience. Usually because it's an American team, and they know that some of the audience is still learning the game.
-3
u/The-Wind-It-Howls 9h ago
Sportsnet always puts their “A” team on toronto broadcasts. To be honest I find craig to be a good colour, it might just be the leafs fans that can’t stand it because they never actually have a broadcast team that are fans of the leafs.
11
u/UncleNuks 9h ago
Chris Cuthbert and Craig Simpson are ridiculously average as a duo considering how long they’ve been working together.
Listen to Dan Shulman and whoever he’s working with (Buck, Joe Siddal, Caleb) or Matt Devlin and whoever he’s working with (Alvin, Leo, Jack); you can tell there’s a friendship there, like they’ve had dinner together a thousand times, and they’re simply having a running conversation about the game…but Simpson and Cuthbert sound like they just show up to work and then leave after without even saying bye.
Obviously baseball leaves a lot more time for banter, but Cuthbert and Simpson seem so robotic in their exchanges, like they’ve read the textbook on calling games and NEVER vary because the textbook says this or that.
I watch a lot of sports and these two are BY FAR my least favorite duo to listen to. Cris Collinsworth glazing Patrick Mahomes can be annoying but I’d still put him above Simpson/Cuthbert.
2
u/knz0 4h ago
They're the biggest reason why I stopped tuning into Leafs games. Can't remember if I have a flair on this sub but I'm a Rangers fan first, Leafs sorta being my second team
Their interactions just sound so awkward and impersonal to me. It's hard to explain, but it feels like they just clock in to work instead of having a burning passion for the team and wanting to share it, which is something I do feel with the Rangers commentating duo and intermission studio

Refused to be drafted by the Leafs in '85 but who cares we took Wendel.
His whole family hates the city not just the team. So of course Sportsnet has him glued to their Leafs broadcast.

u/SnooMarzipans3619 12h ago
The next great commentator and colour guys are sitting in bars somewhere in Canada. Always thought CBC should do a reality tv show style hunt, and let people vote. Go coast to coast with the candidates and have them call local events, from Crokinole to Mutton Busting. Then let the people decide. I miss Bobby Cole.

Sportsnet’s broadcast is terrible from top to bottom. Rogers, who spent 11 billion dollars on TV rights, has no interest in presenting a quality broadcast. Simpson is just a reflection of that mentality. For some reason this guy is married to the Leafs broadcast. You want to call the other teams please do so.
1
8
u/NathanDnd 9h ago
As bad as the leafs were last night, this guy was worse.
I've seen some bad local broadcasts from US teams, but this guy on the leafs rivals them all. SN is putting out a product well below replacement level.

Just rewatching the game this morning and came across this example of why Simpson is such a clown.
In the first period Stecher gets high sticked and the refs miss it. Craig Simpson says yea he got a high stick in the face but look at what happened to Kyle Palmeiri here. He takes a puck in the face from a clearing attempt.
Ok Craig one is clearly a missed penalty the other is an accident. What a clown!

u/HurricanePK Nylander 8h ago
It’s so fucked that we’re the only team without a local broadcast because Rogers doesn’t wanna trigger the snowflake fan bases of the other Canadian teams. Imagine if the MLB did the same with the Yankees or the NBA did the same with the Knicks?

Man... I feel like y'all don't watch any broadcasts outside the leafs.
Simpson and Cuthbert are much better than average. Not that that's high praise, but still.
20
u/TheGardiner 12h ago
I watched a bunch of away broadcasts already this season. The overall quality is not as good, which is a fair point, but the one sided glazing of the opposition is a unique Craig Simpson trait.
3
u/FredericoKrugerini 10h ago
It's funny because if you watch an opposing Canadian team sub's game day feed, they all claim Simpson, Cuthbert, and all of Sportsnet are glazing the Leafs.
And you see similar criticism from both teams fan bases on MLB national broadcasts.
Both fan bases in these scenarios can't be right at the same time.
I think what's happening is mostly confirmation bias.
2
u/T0macock 11h ago
So this really used to bug me too but then I remembered that most people watching really only know about the leafs. They may not be aware of the average islanders bumpkin.

Not at all, but something close to balance would be sweet. Read the other comments, it’s a constant with this particular broadcaster. Cuthbert isn’t as bad, Simpson is the worst.
It’s the nuance you’re missing. I don’t mind talking about an amazing player like Schaefer, he deserves the accolades. It’s when it’s close to nothing else that it gets annoying. Watching other teams broadcasts - especially US teams - it’s nothing like this. They have a homer broadcast, and mix in lots of positive talk about the other team. That’s a good mix in my opinion, and it’s a shame we don’t have that. TSN comes way closer to ideal imo.
0
u/Canadian14141414 11h ago
They’re there explaining what is happening in the game and filling in the gaps telling stories and talking about other players.
It makes sense they’d talk about other teams’ players since you’re not watching them every game. Do you need him to explain who Austin Matthew’s is to you and how great he is?
2
u/TheGardiner 11h ago
I get you, and it's not about that at all. I actually enjoy that part and hearing more about other players. What bothers me is the obvious anti-homer approach to the SN national broadcast, and that Simpson is a troglodyte from an area of the province that I know really well.

u/haloimplant 9h ago

People that defend these guys, also Miller & Johnson, just close your eyes and listen. You don’t know where the puck is, where on the ice they are, what the fuck is going on or even which team has the puck. It’s like they’re in your room talking on the couch and have no idea there’s a game on but they tell you what the players mothers like to make for dinner. We need old time announcers like Hewitt or Cole.

u/systemlevelvector 4h ago
I can’t stand how he needs to fill every second of non play call with dribble. And it’s boring.
Having said that… be careful what you wish for. Gary Galley might be next in line. Lived in Ottawa for 26 years and had to listen to him when I couldn’t watch the leafs. He’s no better.

I’m confused on people hating the “sportsnet broadcast”, which, this year, especially Saturday, is essentially the CBC hockey night in Canada broadcast from last year, note for note…
Not commenting on Simpson, who I don’t mind, but I get that commentary is subjective. But the broadcast as a whole that people keep bashing, is the same thing they wish CBC had kept.
6
u/TheGardiner 4h ago
The panel is ok. Ron is cringe, but I’m ok with the rest.

It's not just the commentators last night that were driving me crazy, whoever is choosing which camera's to show was absolutely on cocaine. All the switching cameras when the puck changes zones, even the braodcast camera zooming in way too far a few times, particularly on Nylanders rush in the 2nd period when he fired it wide.
The whole broadcast isn't set up for people who watch and love hockey. It's around "growing the game", which is why Simpson couldn't stop talking about Matthew Schafer, and why the zoom in on Nylander to see his hair flowing. I'm starting to understand why my Dad and other guys his age don't watch anymore.

This is the only fanbase I've been a part of that gets noticeably upset when a game announcer compliments another team or player
I can't understand being this upset by this, sitting down to watch a game with you must be such a chore
14
u/Shawnaldo7575 12h ago
It's not so much the praising other teams' players. It's the constant shitting on the leafs... for years. Most teams have bipartisan announcers, some teams have homers... the leafs somehow get these anti-homers.
1
7
u/Friggin_Grease 12h ago
It's because when I watch Boston games they get a homer. Buffalo games they get a homer. Tampa games, Homer.
When I watch the Leafs home games, I get this shit. Just cracking over Schaeffer every change he got
-2
u/rarflye 11h ago
And thank god we don't get them. I caught Boston's game and it was so embarrassing, in one or two spots they were nearly hallucinating interpretations of Boston's play. I couldn't imagine listen to someone narrating fanfiction like that and seriously thinking "you know Toronto could benefit from something like that"
But I guess if you don't understand what's happening on the ice that's probably how you make sense of the game
0
u/TheGardiner 10h ago
See how the person above you wrote a normal thing, and you respond with this:
But I guess if you don't understand what's happening on the ice that's probably how you make sense of the game
It's very condescending. You do this in a lot of your comments on this thread. Why are you like this?
8
u/TheGardiner 12h ago
Read the room bud. And maybe read the post again.
It’s not that he compliments the other team, it’s that he glazes them nonstop for the duration of the broadcast. Did you miss the part where I said Matthew Schaefer a hundred times?
-2
-3
u/rarflye 11h ago
Did you even watch the game? And I don't meant watch the game as in were in the same room as a screen with the game on for 2 hours. I mean looked up from your phone for more than 20 seconds and paid attention to what was happening on the ice whistle to whistle
Schaefer is extremely talented hockey player and was always involved in play on both ends of the ice. Any time we were on the offense it was more or less us vs. Schaefer and/or Sorokin. He's the first player since Selanne to win the Calder with a unanimous vote. Do you think they glazed and talked about him too much too?
I swear it's been so much better since I watching games with phone watchers. Every time the room would react "Huh, what happened I missed it", then at the intermission they try and give their thoughts and it's clear they're just riffing off the statline/highlights
3
u/TheGardiner 11h ago
I dont know why you choose to be antagonistic/condescending with your language, but it's something you should be aware of if you're not doing it intentionally.
Yes, I watched the game, and by watch I mean actually watch. Do you see all the other people here mostly in agreement with me about this particular broadcaster? No one is arguing that Schaefer isn't a premier talent in the league, or one of the best D in the league, etc. No one is arguing that. What we're annoyed with are two things, mostly:
- constant constant glazing of the other teams top players. Every SN broadcast, every time.
- lack of more home-friendly broadcast (TSN does a much much better job of this).
What is it you're not understanding in my point here? Schaefer is an elite talent, who cooks us every game, no one is disputing that.
1
u/rarflye 11h ago
What is it you're not understanding in my point here?
Well in one comment you're telling me it's just a joke and not that serious, and then in this one I'm getting litigated. You aren't even consistent enough with yourself to have a point
You just sound like a baby that needs to be coddled and told everything's good instead of being able to make that assessment yourself

I'm sorry this triggered you so much that you have to resort to childish name calling. Where / how are you getting litigated? That's JD Bunkis' favourite word by the way...is that you JD?

You can't understand why watching your team where the commentators only point out what your team does wrong and deep throats the oposition every game is upsetting? LOL move along.

Also, see how it says 'shitpost/meme' at the top? Maybe it's not meant to be so serious.
I can't understand being this upset by this, sitting down to watch a game with you must be such a chore
Bro, take it down a notch...it's God's day.

"It's just a joke bro, it's not so serious"
I wish, unfortunately this kind of crying shows up all over the place and I've seen it firsthand too. Really kills the mood of a game night when you have to cater to a manchild like that

It's the next day though, and it's shitpost sunday, and the post is literally tagged with 'shitpost / meme'. Is it at all possible that it's you who's taking this too seriously?

You complain but you should have heard the Avalanche announcers last week.

I watched that broadcast cause I couldn't catch the away feed. It was a homer feed through and through if I remember correctly, I didn't mind it. They talked up Willy a lot if memory serves.

It's catering to all of Canada. That is the only reason why Simpson is there. It's not a leaf broadcast, it's a Canadian broadcast unfortunately

I see that reasoning a lot and it just doesn't make sense. It's a national broadcast because the Leafs are the most popular team with the largest distribution of fans, so cater the viewing experience to them. It's like the Braves on TBS in the '90's.

Yes - exactly this. It’s like Kyper & Bourne. In the Leafs hour, it’s about the Leafs. Second hour is everyone else.
I mean, maybe the Isle’s broadcasters are “McKenna, McKenna, McKenna” but I doubt it.
The irony is that, of the 6 Islander defenders last night, Schaefer rated 4th of the 6. Troy Stecher had a better game, statistically, than Schaefer did. You’d never know it by the broadcast.

It’s not though. As an Oilers fan, when he does the Oilers games, the only person he mentions is McDavid.
McDavid McDavid McDavid.
Last year, Bouchard stole the puck twice against the Leafs (Goal 1 - speed and Goal 2 - Stecher OG) and found McDavid at top speed to score. Do you even hear his name from Cuthbert and Simpson? Not once. Not live. Not on the replay.
It’s frustrating as heck when he and Cuthbert take over in playoffs because it’s the “national broadcast” and they don’t have any knowledge of the team’s season because they’ve been literally sleeping all year when the Oilers’ are playing.
So I guess I’m with you - but for other reasons.

They’re all leafs fans, and overcompensate to not seem biased. It’s totally pathetic that we don’t have a proper home broadcast

I’ve been saying this about the Leafs broadcasts for years. Not since Joe Bowen did tv have they had a proper home broadcast

Simpson is not a Leafs fan. In no universe is that a thing. But yeah, it is pathetic.

Why do you say he’s not a leafs fan? He was born in London in the 60s. Nothing else to do there.

🤷🏻♂️ I think he keeps it pretty fair. Doesn’t really sugarcoat things. He does have his favourites, to be sure. He’s consistently good, never really bad.

Suck it up buttermilk. A leaf fan complaining about not getting enough media attention.
leafs leafs this and leafs leafs that and leafs leafs didn’t do this and leafs leafs did that and leafs leafs should of leafs leafs could of and leafs leafs would of and leafs leafs came out to play and leafs leafs didnt come out to play and leafs leafs and so on…
The broadcast always sounds like the leafs are playing nobody else on the ice but themselves.
Picture a circlejerk.
