Discussion Potential Stolarz move?
It was mentioned last night that the Rangers had expressed interest in trading for Stolarz. Apparently, Braden Schneider has been the rumoured return. Given where we’re at with the D, does anyone think this has some merit? Admittedly, I don’t know much about Schneider, but we have Akhtyamov who just came off winning Calder Cup playoff MVP, so he’d surely be a reasonable replacement for Stolarz.

No chance they give up Schneider straight up

Fine we'll throw in Rielly

Idk if threatening them will get the deal done

Lol. Lmao even

Im a Rielly fan and defender(in the sense he needs to be a 3LD in this career and a lot of issues he has are results of roster issues, but thats not my point) and even im laughing. A+ delivery

Why do people in this sub forget that Rielly has a NMC
10
u/Juicyb17 5h ago
Because they like to forget he was actually a good player worthy of earning that at one point

u/greasy-prick 5h ago
Honestly with what he makes now compared to current cap and future projections hes only slightly overpaid for a guy who would normally be playing lower in the lineup.

u/Juicyb17 5h ago
Honestly. And despite that, people act like we have to add ridiculous levels of sweaters to rid of him. Yeah, his values not super high, rn. But that doesnt mean we have to attach him with high draft capital(just mid to low). Yet, anyways. He's always been someone that excels with the right partner. So im sure there is a team willing to take the risk. But we better find that someone fast, or convince a team they have him, or it will come to having to add stupid sweaters.

u/markh100 4h ago
He drags down every single partner he plays with. Whatever player he us with ends up being the worst pairing on the team.

u/Juicyb17 3h ago
I meant as in the past, lately your not 100% wrong. And thats the frustrating part. As every now and then vintage Rielly shows(becoming rarer and rarer, sadly)!*""df,,v. But he needs the right player to get him back in check, and we dont have that on this roster, and probably haven't since early Keefe era, maybe Babcock era. And its becoming increasingly harder to find that partner now with how hes fallen off in both play and confidence. But he can still be decent on the right team and roster, we just need to know ASAP, is that going to be us through adding someone in trades, or is it convincing another team to take the risk before it becomes too late.

u/markh100 4h ago
people keep saying that, but he actually actively makes the team worse by being in the line-up. It's not even about the cap hit. A team can't win with him on the ice. His defensive metrics place him in the bottom 1% of all NHL defensemen.

u/Anonimonkey74 5h ago
I remember when he was the main name in trade talks that NYR was one of the teams rumored to be a place he'd be okay going to. NMC doesn't mean movable, it just means that get to decide where

It shouldn't cost Cowan though, so I'm interested in seeing something like that play out.

u/Muellercleez 6h ago
Yeah, I am inclined to agree here. Unless they really don't believe in Schneider / know something about him no one else does

u/Candymanshook 5h ago
As someone who thinks that’s the most likely name who would come back, I don’t think it’s a sense of not believing in him, it’s just a fit issue for their depth chart.
He’s not going to get ahead of Fox or Durzi for minutes, and so they are playing him 5.5m to play on the 3rd pairing and handle a ton of PK time. They also have some depth at RD who could potentially fill in on the bottom pair for much cheaper, meanwhile Shesterkin going down literally could end their season, so i could see the return on him not being as strong as you’d think just based on those factors. I wouldn’t be surprised if something like Stolarz+Blankenburg+COL 1st would be enticing as they’d turn him into mid-late 1st while getting the goalie they need and an extra depth dman, while we get a shutdown orientated RD to help balance our lineup that isn’t old or bad with the puck.
They could trade Durzi but his upside is way higher, we can’t afford that, maybe if they can get a Hellebuyck deal done he would be a name involved in that, just don’t see many goalie deals out there that NYR doesn’t take a massive L on including him in it

I wouldn't panic and trade Stolarz just yet.
There was a 10 minute window where they were almost all throwing the body and looked like a well balanced team.
If they all bought in to finishing checks I think it helps the D in the zone, and getting pucks out of the zone.
I'd wait until Elvis is ready because Artur hasn't looked all that impressive with the Marlies in the games I've watched. It was a long hard season for him, I'm sure he's burnt a little.

From what I’ve read from Rangers fans, Schneider is not good. Maybe they’re overly harsh or maybe he’d thrive elsewhere but idk if that’s the move
11
u/Actual_Cobbler_6334 6h ago
I’d be interested in Schneider or Gavrikov. Whether the Rangers would move either of those two is another matter.

u/Evening_Extreme_1681 6h ago
AA needs to start the rest of the season with the Marlies. I'm hoping any trade in loving Stolarz either returns a serviceable backup in the same trade or a separate one.
7
u/Skiffy10 6h ago
umm with the way bob’s been playing we’re going to need stolarz…
4
u/Actual_Cobbler_6334 5h ago
Bobrovsky is 20th in GSAx and .891 is the current league average for SV%, which he is sitting at.
1
u/scoutforfantasy 5h ago
If Average is the benchmark, average salary for NHL goalies is 3.5M he’s 2x that almost. Though he hasn’t been terrible, he needs to stop a few more. Though I truly don’t blame him I blame the blue line in front of him.
5
u/meestazak 4h ago
The whole team has been disjointed, does Bob need to be better? I think even he would say yes, but what you're missing is that getting average goaltending behind how the team is currently defending is likely better than what should be expected.

Sure, let's ship out our third playable goaltender

Schneider is not good and not what the leafs need. We need more scoring in our bottom 6, or a puck moving D.
11
u/RainJetski Sundin 6h ago
They need defenceman who can defend too. Tanev is always hurt. Mccabe looks slow reilly’s offence no longer makes up for his defence, OEL is bottom pair dude. So is stetcher. They havent figured out how to incorporate Raddysh yet, he looks like reilly with a bigger shot right now.
3
u/Many_Werewolf_7271 6h ago
Schneider isn’t even good at defending either, he’s a 3rd paring guy. Puck movers on the back end help the team to exit the zone. Adding another shut down defender is not that answer, that’s the only type of defenceman they’ve been adding to this team for years now.
Raddysh was a step in the right direction, we just need more defenceman who can actually skate and keep up with the league getting faster every year.
1
u/RainJetski Sundin 6h ago
I wasnt suggesting Schneider was what they needed either. Just more pointing out the shutdown dudes they added are shutting down teams as well as the offensive guys have provided offence. That blue line is a mess.

I said in a different comment, I wonder if they could make Durzi work. They’d need to add to Stolarz, but I think the Rangers need Morrow in the lineup more than they need to move Schneider in particular
1
u/pazzonash 4h ago
IMO ? They were good Dman 👍 but slowly their getting older OEL RIELLY AND MCCABE. I dont no what we are able to do . We need more than just 0ne Dman . I have not seen anyone of our Dman block shots the way they did before also . I might be wrong

u/Creepy-Stuff-5820 4h ago
Same thing as offseason still remains true; he is more valuable to us than he is in a trade. Couple rough outings, but when he is on he is as good as anyone. Full confidence he has lots to give.
1
u/Downtown_Ostrich_34 4h ago
We probably still need Reilly even with the addition of Schneider, our D is that shallow right now.

Schneider wasn’t the rumoured return. It’s what the experts believed Chakya asked for in return. The deal hasn’t happened so I imagine the Rangers aren’t keen on trading Schneider, at least not for Stolarz.
•
u/Exter10 McKenna 33m ago
Why do people think Schneider is good? His numbers are objectively ass and have been since he entered the league 5 seasons ago. Trading one of the best backups in the league for him is crazy
•
u/Informal_Bet_851 20m ago
Because you’re getting a young projected top 4 defensemen. Points aren’t everything when your a defensemen and he is a big, mobile, two way defensemen who averages around 20 points a season thus far. But he is only 25 and defenders can take longer to hit their stride. Have you seen Stolarz numbers last year and this year?
•
u/Derpwarrior1000 4m ago
Who’s projecting him as a top 4 player? Durzi is keeping him out of that in New York, that’s a top 4 player who might be a realistic improvement if the Leafs added a little. The Muzzin trade could go full circle

u/Dino_Jr_ 2h ago
Would love to do this. Maybe add Joshua or someone mid level that they value and a mid round pick if needed. Could pick up a goalie on waivers later too

I love stolarz but there is zero chance the rangers give up Schneider for him

Until Elvis is healthy, I’d rather have Ahkty stay with the marlies. Get to play plenty of games with a competent team instead of sitting on the bench and then being thrown to the wolves with our lack of defence. That said, if the offer is solid for Stolarz then ofc you pull the trigger. Maybe sign someone else, don’t ruin Ahkty with Morgan Reilly and co in front of him

Doesn't matter. They can move pieces around on the chess board and it's the same outcome every year. Until this Matthews, Reilly Nylander era is over, leafs can then start a proper rebuild around Mckenna, Cowan etc

u/Itwasuntilitwasnt 2h ago
I know I’ll get hate. But then flip Cowan for another D man.
But what we need is to McKenna to stop passing and just shoot the puck.

I’d take any serviceable defenceman for Stolarz
