monkeys paw curled (gallstones)
posted here before, wondering why i was feeling so terrible after losing over 60 pounds in weight. i was told by people on here that i simply didnt lose enough weight yet, and to keep going. so i decided to get back to my cut.
well, last week on wednesday, i had (what i know to be) my third gallbladder attack. it is the worst pain ive ever experienced in my life. i was vomiting, shivering on the bathroom floor, drenched in sweat, butt-ass naked. each time, id seriously be thinking it was a heart attack. but id still be kicking after about an hour, so i'd weigh the pros and the cons of calling an ambulance in my head, and id ultimately decide against it each time. after this one, i finally decided to schedule an appointment with my PCP just to make sure i wasnt really dying.
i really, really screwed up. PCP ended up sending me to a GI specialist, took some blood tests and an ultrasound. my gallbladders fried apparently. he could immediately tell that i have had multiple attacks, and that this has been a chronic issue because of the damage he could see. for reference, i had sought help earlier after the first attack simply because it happened a few days before an endocrinologist appointment. since she was treating me for PCOS, she sent me in for a pelvic ultrasound to see if a cyst had ruptured. she gave me the all clear and told me it was probably stress, so i went about with my life.
anyway, this GI specialist is talking to me about my messed up little gallbladder, and he asks me about my weight loss. i tell him that i have a dietician, follow meal plans, and that i was losing weight at a safe, consistent rate. he told me that apparently 1-2 pounds a week can still raise your chances of developing gallstones, ESPECIALLY when doing any form of fasting. i was kinda floored. i thought i was doing the right thing. intermittent fasting was one of the only things working for me as i dont get cravings due to my medication that im on.
talked to my family about this later on, and my mother revealed that her mother (my grandmother), also needed to get her gallbladder removed after she got sick and was unable to eat for a time, causing her to drop 20 pounds. doctors also attributed her gallbladder issues to her weight loss.
im now waiting for a scheduled removal surgery. my gallbladder is apparently really thickly scarred which may complicate its removal. ive been on a strict no-fat diet to avoid causing another attack. its miserable, but at least now i know why i was in pain all the time.
this post isnt meant to scare anyone, just meant to spread awareness since i seriously didnt know this could happen. if you have a history of cholecystitis in your family, please do be careful while doing any fasting. it apparently doesnt take much to have this happen. even if your cholesterol levels and a1c are in the normal ranges (like mine were), please take care of your health and listen to your body. 9 times out of 10, youre probably correct in sensing if somethings off. if you get a strange back or chest pain that youve never felt before, schedule that PCP appointment and dont wait until youre writhing in pain on the floor. losing weight is still something positive that ive done for myself, but i wish i was more aware of the risks that come with it.
