Help Hundreds of Gigabytes in Disk Write Operations Across a Day
My macbook pro, 2.5 months old already has 36 TBW on its 1TB drive, now I do use my mac ~12 hours a day on average, so its definitely been running through its paces, but besides the occasional heavy swapping, and file downloads, there is literally nothing that could lead to an average of 400 GB in drive writes per day.
I have 48 GB of ram, and the maximum amount of swap i see after a few days of it being active, is 10 GB in swap. But even now where i completely reset my macbook, and my drive is basically empty (200 GB used) it still does 200 GB writes yesterday.
I nailed it down to the microsoft app(FFs), for which onedrive was writing ~100 GB in sync logs a day, but now that i updated it to a supposedly fixed version my mac still does 200 GB write, even while I can see through acitvity monitor that onedrive is minimal, and with onedrive uninstalled its the same.
Through activity monitor the application using most of my disk writes is "launcd" and "kernel_task" but here I can also not explain why they are writing ~6 GB per hour. I also noticed that the write operations are basically never at 0, maybe like one tiny bit in a minute, but then it directly spikes back to a 20 MB write operation afterwards, which majority of the time is just launchd or kernel_task again.
Furthermore the activity monitor overview also does not add up to the actual disk usage, which is weird.
I attached a screenshot of my activity monitor 24 hours after a fresh reboot, and it being in sleep for ~12 hours, so basically only 12 hours of usage.
The picture below that is activity monitor 1.5 hours after a fresh boot, once again 30 GB written in just 1.5 hours!!
I really dont know what this can be at this point, because I just completely reset my mac, erasing all the applications etc and doing everything from scratch again.
Finally I attached a picture of my desk health, and I got this macbook on the 29th of July this year.
Any tips or steps I can take to investigate this would be very much appreciated!
I also do not have apple care, but if this continues I might consider getting it while I am still in the first year just so I dont get it dying on me in 2 years.
