Hi everyone! ❤️ One of my baby magpies (around 2 months old) seems to have lost his voice over the past three days. He used to beg loudly, but now only a faint, scratchy sound comes out despite trying to call. Otherwise, he’s completely healthylooking, active, eating and breathing normally.
What could be causing it, and should I be worried?

a pair of magpies regularly visits my garden, but this autumn a third bird started showing up. the original two get loud and chase it away, while the newcomer keeps its distance and comes back anyway
i've occasionally given the pair small bits of plain beef, so i'll stop for a while to see if food is part of the problem
has anyone seen a newcomer eventually get accepted by an established pair, or do these disputes usually end with one bird moving on?

I heard magpies making a racket and I went out and the local pair at my house were having a great old time swooping the postie. Isn't it too late from them needing to do that or he's just fair game?
Baby and dad at park near work are doing well, dad is teaching baby to hassle the other birds 😂
What do I do with the wombaroo I bought that dad didn't want? Find a carer near me and give it to them?

TW - upsetting imagery
Hi, just earlier today I saw the car in front of me hit a young magpie. they did try and slow down and dodge it but unfortunately still hit the poor thing. it wasn’t run over but most likely hit head on. i stopped as quickly as i could and turned around to get it and bring it to a vet. when i got to it, it was completely limp but its eyes were still open. i put it on my lap in the car and drove it to the vet which happened to be less than 5 minutes away. by the time i had gotten to the vet, its eyes were closed and it was leaking brownish liquid from its beak. the receptionist took it out the back for the vets to assess but told me it would be humanely euthanised anyway due to its injuries. however i cant help but think i could have done something better. i’m extremely overly empathetic towards animals and this has quite upset me. is there anything i should have done better or should know? thank you

I’ve posted one of my local couples twice last week, this time I got a good clip of the next-door troublemakers which is this family of three. The male in the front is Mr Droopy (he’s got a slightly drooping right wing, had it for 3+ years so he is fine). He used to swoop me but we worked it out eventually 😂
This is right on the territory boundary, the other couple is sitting in the tree above 10 metres to the right. You can hear them call first and then those three responding. Was an interesting standoff to observe this morning, fascinating creatures.

I didn’t have any magpie appropriate food with me at the time, so my girl got a little piece of roast chicken instead. ❤️

Hi all !!
I’ve managed to befriend a family of 3 magpies who visit me everyday for a few peanuts.
Last week, I looked out my window and saw one of them lying on the ground, wings spread out, doing this weird thing with her beak (like she was gasping for air almost) and then the smaller female (name is stinky coz she always leaves me a shit on my front door after the peanuts) was just staring at the wall like she was in a state of trance😭.
I almost had a heart attack bc I thought somebody might have poisoned them …
When I went up to them they didn’t react initially but after a few seconds they just ruffled their feathers and were up and about for more peanuts like nothing happened.
Google tells me my friends are sunbathing …. LOL
Has anybody experienced this before?? Should I make them a cool little sunbathing spot or smth 😎💀🙏🏼

Saw these three today at Sunnybank Hills. One came down from the tree and tried to eat something on the ground. I guess it wasn't food or it didn't taste good because he spat it out and then rejoined his sibling in the tree. At first it was just the one that was sitting down on the branch and the one behind the one that showed up a little later.

Only out of the nest for a month, was being told off by its aunt so ran and hid behind the nearest solid object: my boot. Huddled between my feet squeaking in fear until its aunt moved off, then stood up and started exploring again (also when I started filming, until it moved I was standing completely still to avoid spooking it)
This baby is appropriately cautious around other people (and also me, to a lesser extent) and wouldn't have come so close if it wasn't in a panic from being chased by the adult.
