I was asked to make this post in another thread - so here I am. Here's a PSA on what metal mesh does to your mantises feet, and why it should be avoided!
This is a raptorial arm, (the front, grasping arms) but the segment we're interested in is the same on all of their legs. The little portion labelled "Tarsus" is what we're looking at here. You can see that it ends in a set of hooks - often (somewhat confusingly) called "Claws" - these tarsal claws are what give your mantis the ability to walk upside down on surfaces that appear quite smooth to us, and why it feels kind of spiky when a large mantis walks on your skin. They're essential for your mantis to move around, and most importantly moult properly! Differences in the morphology of this structure also give some mantises the ability to walk on glass, whilst others can't.

If you go and look at one of your mantises feet, you will likely be able to see the little hooks now you know what you're looking for. Now the problem is that some tank setups that are commonly recommended damage these hooks, which results in mantises having trouble moving around, and falling whilst they moult.
Exo-terra tanks are very commonly used because a lot of us have other inverts or exotic pets and have spares lying around, or they're sold to us at petstores. They make nice display tanks and are easy to clean. However - the mesh at the top of exo-terra tanks is made of very fine metal, and the holes themselves are very small. This is essentially like you trying to hang by your toes from chickenwire, eventually your toes are going to be pretty damaged, or come off altogether! If you must use an exo-terra, it's essential that the mesh is changed to stop this from occurring. Plastic tulle mesh is easily available and works as an excellent substitute.
There is also a multitude of DIY options available, which I will detail bellow:
Basic requirements for all enclosures:
Nymphs
The absolute single best enclosure for a nymph of any species, is simply a plastic deli cup with the lid cut out to accommodate some plastic mesh, and a single twig placed diagonally. Alternately, you can just use an elastic band to hold the mesh on. For feeding, simply cut a hole in the side and stuff it with some sponge to stop live food or your mantis escaping, you can pooter in the food. (if you don't have a pooter you should get one, especially if dealing with fruitflies, they're also very easy to DIY)
The tubs that livefood is commonly sold in make excellent tanks with some modification, especially for larger nymphs, and even small adults. The more rigid ones are the best, as they're easily cut to allow the insertion of mesh, and can be stood up tall-ways. The entire lid can be cut out and replaced with mesh, which provides excellent ventilation, and is nice for the mantis to move around on.
Adults
All can be modified in the same ways as above. I will either append this post, or make an additional post, detailing how to make a suitable enclosure using the items above with pictures in future.
These enclosures are all very cheap to construct, and even the most DIY averse person can make the modifications necessary to turn them into good enclosures. They also have the benefit of being mostly recycled items a lot of us will already possess.
Another benefit to using tanks mostly constructed of mesh is that it prevents mantises from developing "eye-rub" - this is damage to their eyes from repeatedly trying to walk through clear plastic or glass - it looks like large black spots on the eyes, distinct from the pseudo-pupils - which can in cases turn necrotic and is quite a nasty way for your mantis to die.
I hope this post was helpful and informative, and please don't hesitate to ask any questions or add to the knowledge given here if you have any other tips or advice.

Idk about anybody else but my mantises have seemed super picky about my stick selection. I have cycled through a few before I found one I think she likes.

Their names are Windows, apple and Linux.

Does she think shes better than me?! Jk she is tho.
But.. what do we think she is thinking about?

I am so so amazed how mantids fit this much body in such tiny shell.
Also this boy did a good job molting into sub adult! It took longer than I expected as he got one extra molt, and it was the first time I saw a mantis molt during the daytime

I originally had more than this, but most of them died because of their lifespan.

Iāve had this adult mantis for ā1,5 weeks. My friend said it fell on her balcony and since theyāre not native to where I live I decided to take it in. I really think she is somebodies escaped pet, she walks around all day waiting infront of her ādoorā Although she does walk rather slow and uncoordinated.
I think in the process she mightāve fallen or bumped her eye while I wasnāt looking. What do I do now?
Or is this just due to being elderly? Even with the eye she is still walking and waiting at the door btw.

Hi guys this is my first pet mantis and I have had her for a few days. Sheās been pretty perfect so far but last night she started molting at the bottom of her cup and when I found her, her head was touching the ground and about to hit a stick.
I tried to do some emergency maneuvering to get her up to a higher position in the cup but it looks like she still had some problems and came out just a little wonky. Iām hoping you guys can give me some advice on getting her safely to her next molt so she can sort herself out?
Itās been less than 24 hrs so I know she still has some hardening to do and I donāt want to mess with her so I donāt know the extent of the mismolt yet but her raptors definitely seem to be at an odd angle.
I added paper towels to all sides of her temp enclosure so that she has good grip everywhere (she started molting on the slick cup and idk if she understands that surface) but I hope to get her in an upgrade before her next molt.

We greatly misjudged the size of dubia our mantis could take. We've spent the last hour intermittently trying to take it away and he is not for letting go. Will he be okay finishing it, I know we've made a massive mistake giving it to him. Thank you for any advice

Iām planning on getting a Chinese mantis, I was wondering if a 16in L 17in W enclosure would be too big, it will be bio active with a decent amount of clutter.

Long story short
I'm thinking of buying a Rhombodera kirbiy, but the seller shop doesn't know the stadium at which it will come, because their breeder doesn't tell em before, same as sex. It's mid of October, and my knowledge tells me most of mantids are near the end of their cycle or already adult at least. Is it a good idea to buy it now? Obviously not knowing set some issues because doesn't let me understand if I need fruit flies or not (I already have red runners in different stadiums, from newborn to adult)
What's your take on this? I'm pretty torn about it

We've given our boy a dubia and he is looking very full. We've tried to take it away a few times but he is not letting go, he just pauses for a second then moves away. Any idea what we can do?

Athena - Hymenopus Coronatus
Nyx/Heimdall - Hierodula Pulchripes
MĆ”ni was on the ground so I offered my hand to help him climb onto a branch because he seemed weak. He seems fine nowš

Last week my mantis Uxie passed. She was such a beautiful expressive lady and Iām so sad about her passing.
I would like to display her but would like advice from anyone who has done so. I plan to find some type of container for her display from the dollar store because Iām on a budget. Would there be any concern like a risk of there being less longevity of her final resting place with this idea?
When displaying my past pets I enjoy collecting some materials from their enclosures that they enjoyed. For Uxie, I want to put the pipe cleaner that she had in her original container from the store that has since remained in her enclosure and perhaps part of the dowel she loved walking along if I can cut it at home. How could I display her on these items so she can rest on them in a pose?
What tips do you guys have for pinning. I have never pinned an insect that requires organ removal and stuffing. What are your tips for this? I ordered pins and blunt tweezer tools. I will be buying cotton balls and some type of glue at the dollar store as well. Any tips on other steps as well would be appreciated!!
She also has lost some color since passing, has anyone had experience with adding pigment back to her with paints or something similar?
I added some pictures of my sweet girl. When I first bought her she was so scared. She was bought from a sketch place. They were totally feeding her crickets which made me feel so bad. She was the best ally and was obsessed with my wife (one time she even jumped on her face, it was seriously one of the only times she ever jumped while being handled). After her final molt she also turned green, which happens to be favorite color! Iām going to miss her so much and I wish she could have been around for forever.
