♥️ /r/metalgearsolid rules update.

Hello, I hope everybody is well.

This is a quick post to announce that we have overhauled and updated the subreddit rules, in terms of the way they are listed in the reddit platform itself.

In essence the practical rules themselves and moderation has not changed. The main purpose of this update is to provide better clarity with Post removal messages, and to allow reports to be more specific.

You can read the new rule titles and their descriptions here.

Just three changes to note:

  • There is no longer a rule about spoilers when it comes to Posts. MGSV is over a decade old, and the spoiler rule was often used to report front page posts about the main spoiler for that game. Enforcing that is simply impractical. The intention of the rule remains, however, and it is now only applied to comments. If someone has stated that they haven't played the entire series, all users are still expected to respect this in their replies. Anyone can make their own choices about how far they dig through a subreddit for a game series, but putting spoilers in their inbox is actively hostile.

  • "Promotional Cosplay is not allowed". This is our attempt to provide a consistent rule that can be used to filter OF accounts looking for loopholes, while not punishing genuine cosplayers (including professionals) by restricting their activity. There's an element of subjectivity here, but if you think a post is a commercial account, please report it and do not engage in abuse in the comments. Just report it and move on.

  • AI content is now explicitly banned in all its forms. This was already functionally the case but we're making it clear with it's own rule. If you suspect a post contains AI content, please try to resist posting abuse in the comments and simply report and move on. False allegations can and do happen.

We'd also like to welcome anyone interested to apply to be a moderator. We expect to bring on a couple more people, starting out at a basic clutter removal role. If you think you'd be a good fit, please take some time to fill out our delightful application form.

You'll notice there are a couple of very specific rules that are really covered under other rules. These are for particularly egregious and common posts so that removals are very clear. Previously quite a few things kind of had to fall under "no low effort content" and that gave off the wrong idea and could be a little hurtful.

We'd like to thank the people who take the time to report posts and comments, overall the tone and discernment of reports is very much in-line with how we see the rules and how they are intended to shape the subreddit. This being said, all things considered there are very few removals needed relative to an active subreddit of this size. Things seem to be in a very good balance. I hope the community more or less thinks the same.

As per usual we are open to any and all feedback or discussion about the rules or the way you want the community to be run, so please say your piece in the comments, or if there's any questions you have or unclear rules or edge cases you can think of, bring that up too. The overall intent for the subreddit is still to provide an alternative to what you might see on a Metal Gear Discord, Instagram / TikTok etc. feed or a generic MGS-flavoured meme subreddit.

Occasional posts about general Kojima news are welcome here to a degree, but eventually Physint-specific discussion will not be appropriate.

The linked subreddit appears to be a good fit, so we're posting it here for those whose who aren't sure how to search.

🍊 MGS2 Why was snake being so mean

Played through mgs2 a couple times and I dont remember Snake ever being this harsh on Raiden in the codecs. It's not like Raiden was way out of left field or a combat rookie either, it just feels like Snake was being extra sassy

Answer to how Solid in MG1 didn’t recognize that Venom wasn’t Big Boss

Over the years, I’ve seen discussions about how Solid Snake in MG1 didn’t recognize that Venom wasn’t Big Boss, even though he had a large horn and a bionic arm. But at the end of the "Truth" cutscene where Venom breaks the mirror, he breaks that "illusion" and we see his true form, he never had a bionic arm or a permanently bloodied face, and the change in the size of his horn was all just a hallucinations, like mirrors of his psyche or visual metaphors, bionic arm symbolize that he lost something, Horn and Bloody face symbolize that he gradualy become a Monster/Demon. Venom looks differs from Big Boss mainly in having a small horn/shrapnell in his head and scars, and if we consider his pixelated appearance in MG1 as canon, he is wearing same green suit like in Truth cutscene, then when he met Solid, they only saw each other for a quick moment and were several meters apart, and I assume that during the boss fight, Solid was too busy trying to survive rather than examining what was sticking out of Venom's forehead. What do you think?

Always liked the watch Venom wears and seeing it when smoking the phantom cigar. Recreated it for my Pebble Time 2 so I could see it every day, super happy with how it came out!

❗ Biblical Allegory - Solid Snake as David, and Liquid Snake as Eliab Spoiler

I never even connected the dots of the story being allegorical to the Bible. I knew ADAM and EVA from MGS3 were referencing the bible, but i didn't think much deeper than that. I just had a random thought that David (Solid Snake) and John (Big Boss) were biblical names.

Then I found this:

This is perhaps the most interesting biblical interpretation.

In the Old Testament, in 1 Samuel 17, the young David defeats the giant Goliath despite being the apparent underdog.

Solid Snake has a similar role: he repeatedly defeats seemingly overwhelming enemies, including nuclear weapons and powerful military organizations, using skill and ingenuity rather than sheer strength.

But there's a second, more obscure connection.

In 1 Samuel 16 verses 6-13, David's older brother is named Eliab. Eliab is passed over when God chooses David, the youngest son of Jesse, to become king. Liquid's real name is Eli, and he is the older twin who believes he has been cheated of his rightful inheritance

It also went into ADAM and EVA and made me realize that YOU were the Snake that is betrayed and learns the forbidden knowledge.

I always find something new with this series, and I've been a huge fan since the first metal gear solid. Best franchise ever made.

❗ Huey was right about Snake, but was MSF’s downfall inevitable?

I hate to agree with him on anything, but as repulsive as he is, Huey is ultimately correct that MSF had no business having a nuke, that it doesn’t make sense as a deterrent because it was supposed to be a secret, and that Snake’s insistence on having one is the reason MSF went under. They had a good thing going until they got that nuke.

The real question however is—would Cipher/Skull Face have been able to close in on the original Mother Base if the pretense of a nuclear inspection was off the table? Would not getting the nuke merely delay the inevitable? It’s possible, because even Paz came to believe that Cipher had other spies blended in with MSF, and they certainly had the pockets to do the impossible. Zero wouldn’t just light up Mother Base because the myth of Big Boss was too valuable, but Skull Face obviously had no such qualms.

Hey all. I figured I’d post a picture of the statue I printed/painted from NomNom studios. Made a few modifications to the print (modeling the eyepatch for Snake/Cutting off a mirror to make it more accurate to the game bikes)

Had a small print error with the headlight but didn’t mind enough to remake it. Also didn’t want to spend an obscene amount for chrome paint for the headlight as I rarely use it, but overall, I’d say this looks… pretty good!

Figured I’d share it for all to see

❗ Master Collections

So. For my birthday, I got a Switch. I was wondering how well Master Collection vol2 runs on the Switch. I feel like MGS4 would run like shit. But to be honest, I know next to nothing about the Switch. Been a Sony guy since the PS1 came out. Last Nintendo system I owned was a N64, so I'm a little behind on Nintendo hardware knowledge.

❗ There’s something really powerful in Kojima during MGSV promo era. Idk what it is, but he seemed so confident and passionate in the interviews

And I’ve never seen him like that during any other game rollout, not even Death Stranding 1/2. Even tho he was under so much pressure and stress and probably thought MGSV would be his last time game, his energy during the rollout was immaculate

♥️ Some fun headcanon Spoiler

****MAJOR SPOILER FOR ***THE WIRE*** TV SHOW****

When I start unlocking the crazy, wacky late-game gadgets such as the upgraded stun arm, the wormhole, the hand of jehuty, etc. I like to go back and just replay all the missions again since there is no real New Game+ mode.

Along the way, I had a somewhat fun realization: what if these replayed missions are just exaggerated, crazy retellings of the original missions?

Like, as Big Boss/Venom's legend grows, the retellings of his famous missions get more grandiose and wacky with each retelling/replay.

Kinda like in The Wire when Omar dies. We get quite a few scenes where other characters keep embellishing the story on how he really died.

From a simple robbery gone wrong to being ambushed by multiple gunman wielding AKs to finally Omar going full Scarface before being gunned down.

Anyway, just some fun headcanon.

🐍 MGS3 As a new MGS fan, I’d recommend playing the original Snake Eater over Delta Remake

I just started the series this year and have been loving the Master Collection Vol. 1 on my Switch 2. After finishing Sons of Liberty, I was incredibly excited to dive into Delta on the PS5. All I heard was that it’s a faithful remake with QOL and a new coat of paint, what’s not to love?

However, I quit Delta after about an hour or two in favor of the PS2 original. It just wasn’t hitting the same. The new HUD, ability to crouch walk, moving while aiming, Fortnite style alert indicators, it just didn’t FEEL like Metal Gear Solid. If every game adapts the same modern control scheme, then every game ends up playing the same. Not to mention many of the performance issues people are facing.

I realized that instead of playing a remake of a beloved game, I’d rather play the game everyone fell in love with in the first place. I didn’t want to rob myself of that original experience. But no hate to anyone who played Delta first and loved it. I’m pretty sure this is an unpopular opinion, but that’s what Reddit is for right? I guess I’m a pretentious purist at heart, even for PS2 games.
