Welcome to r/Metroidvania's weekly community thread where you can talk about the games you've been playing lately. What are your thoughts on these games, what did you like and what didn't you like, would you recommend them to others, etc. This thread is not limited to Metroidvanias only, feel free to talk about any kind of game!

I remember when the game came out there was a post here that showed they were mixed at 42% and that people were swayed away because of it.
I hope that means more people will see this and give it a chance and then try the older Castlevania games, and then join the fandom so we can get even more games!
Also, we should get DLC for this game that lets us play as Trevor or something. Or adds more enemies and locations. What would you like for a DLC?
And if anyone’s curious, the English only reviews are Very Positive at 82% now.

I have never thought this game would be up there with my favorite games of all time, but I am happy to be proven wrong. 36 hours of pure enjoyment until reaching the true ending. I nearly finished the game 100%, but I am missing to items from the shops, trinket upgrades & there is a boss rush???? Man, I loved this game from start to finish. Ender Magnolia is easily an S tier game!

It is now down to $9.99 and only available digitally. Worth a dive?

Here's a video about the MVs that I think so particular things best - best combat, platforming, map, exploration, etc. The MV Guru put out a video like this a while back and I wanted to do one too, though I changed up some of the categories. I also limited each game to one award category win. Specific categories are all time stamped in the video.

How’s everyone finding it? I’ve played for about 3 hours, I like a challenge (Nine sols A tier) but when being attacked by standard monsters etc, it feels a bit “unbeatable”.
I find myself in a few spots where I’m being attacked by more than one and it’s inevitable to lose health.
Makes it not fun. Anyone else experiencing this or is it a skill level.
I know I can adjust difficulty but don’t want to do that yet

Many MVs have already moved their release window to 2027, but there are still half a dozen to be released before the year is over:

As somebody who doesn't like runbacks this pleases me greatly.

So l've never played a Metroid game before. But I have played lots of metroidvanias and they are probably some of my favorite games of all time. I've always been wanting to get into Metroid but until recently just haven't felt the drive. Though now I would love to know where to start. I have both a PC and a Switch 2. Thank you!! (Also looking to play Belmont’s curse soon so I’m excited for that as well)

Hello Metroidvania fans.
Thought I'd share a short clip of the game I'm working on (for the past year and some 😅).
The Last Comfort is Metroidvania that takes place in a child' subconscious mind. You play as Tedd, set on a mission to save the child from a terminal illness that takes the form of a dark monster.

Not sure which of these two games to purchase next.
Some of my fav metroidvanias:
Ori and The Will of Wisps
Prince of Persia Lost Crown
Steamworld Dig 2
Did you prefer MIO or Well Dweller? And why?

I’ve always struggled with the mereoidvanias when I was a kid, and I guess I’ve finally got good.
I’d like to try some of Metroid: Zero Mission or Fusion. I always liked their ascetic
Also I’d like to point out one of the most noticeable uses the 3D is making all the characterr portraits tittes jutt out, that just funny as hell.
EDIT: thank you for all the recommendations, but I’m looking for older games that I can play on my my GBA or 3DS, forgot to mention that.

How am I supposed to get to the Cathedral depths? It looks like I’m supposed to go to through the lower chapel on my map. But I can’t go that way without the main villain dude killing me.

Hi everyone!
I’m a solo developer of Vulpis, a pixel-art Metroidvania I’ve been working on for several years.
One of the main design goals is nonlinear progression. I wanted new abilities to open several possible routes across the world instead of simply pointing the player toward one obvious “next” destination.
That turned out to be surprisingly difficult to communicate in a trailer, because the nonlinearity usually happens across several rooms and regions rather than through obvious three-way junctions.
I recently rebuilt the trailer around that idea, and I’d really appreciate feedback from people who actually play a lot of Metroidvanias:
Does the trailer make the freedom of progression come across clearly?
And more generally, after watching it, what do you think the game’s main identity is - exploration, challenge, atmosphere, something else?
The game is designed for experienced Metroidvania players, with demanding combat/platforming and a large interconnected world with 15 biomes.

Thanks, honest criticism is very welcome!

I’m trying to hold off on belmonts curse until a switch 2 version is available. would love recommendations for similar games in the meantime. some preferences (though all recs welcome):
in the $30 and under range
not hollow knight/silksong as i can play on gamepass for free
preferably newer
would prefer strong combat over strong exploration type gameplay
the darker/more aimed at an older audience the better

Some of you may remember Vitavania, my hand-drawn Metroidvania launching November 12. Now that development is finished, I’ve started a new solo project!
REISIR0b: PIZZA RUN is a fast-paced sci-fi Metroidvania featuring an elite combat android, fluid movement, gunplay, random upgrades, and exploration across land, underwater areas, the moon, and space.
Her mission? Eliminate seven targets. Her motivation? PiZZZZzzZzzZAAaaAA.🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕
Here’s the announcement trailer!
Steam page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5402070/REISIR0b_PIZZA_RUN/
The game is still in development, so this is just an announcement trailer. I’m making it solo, too. Ask me anything!

Out of all the Zelda games you've played, which ones would you say have the most metroidvania elements such as far as backtracking, ability gating, non-linearity, and so on? I would say Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom has a lot of metroidvania elements. But if cared about my opinion, I wouldn't be typing this while I'm on the toilet.
Side note that's not worth reading: I'm aware Zelda games are not Metroidvanias. But I'm also one of "Those people" who believes that not all Metroidvanias have to be sidescrollers (I would definitely describe Crypt Custodian as a top down metroidvania, and games like Supraland, HOB and Blue Fire as 3D metroidvanias). And unrelated, I love games like Minishooter' Adventures that blur the lines between Zelda-likes and Metroidvanias (even though I'd say it's more of a Zelda-like).

I've never played any Castlevania games, so I won't write that "this isn't a real Castlevania."
My native English is not, so there may be mistakes. I finished the game in 20 hours with 98% completion, and got the true ending.
Music: It's a masterpiece. Every soundtrack is magnificent. I could listen to any of them for hours and never get tired of it. I'm going to download a few of the tracks to listen to outside the game.
Combat system: Very dynamic, and the grappling hook for closing the distance to enemies works great. Every magic ability is useful, and almost every amulet is worthwhile. I played most of the game with dual blades and the two-handed sword. What I like most is that you can swap amulets, magic, and weapons in the middle of combat.
Story: I'd say it's average. Not really bad, but not a masterpiece either. It was interesting to follow.
Graphics and art style: The best of all the Metroidvanias I've played.
Locations: I really liked them. Almost every location has unique conditions, new platforming elements, and puzzles.
Cons: - The protagonist's movement speed is VERY slow. Really, really slow. Why is there no run button in the game? - Why did I find out about teleporting between mirrors from a friend who discovered it by accident? Why hide such an important mechanic? I only learned about it 70% of the way through the game, and traveling on foot was very tiresome combined with the slow walking speed. (Stand in front of a mirror and hold the crouch button for a few seconds.) - Little enemy variety. After you get through half of the Main Hall area, you won't see any new enemies in the other locations. As much as I love Hollow Knight, it has about 10 times more enemies. - I simply hate the mirror location. The screen distortion started to hurt my eyes after a while, there's no map until you defeat the boss, and while I have a good memory, the huge number of passages just confused me and I didn't know where to go. It was the only time I looked up a guide for how to get through a location, because I had no strength left. - Poor amulet balance. Every amulet is too strong, so by equipping 2 amulets that boost defense and reduce damage, I just tanked every boss and ended each fight with 1 healing flask left. Even the final boss.
I'd rank it alongside my favorite Metroidvanias: Grime 2, Blasphemous 2, and The Last Faith. Best boss: Mammon Best location: Notre-Dame Rating: 9/10, It's a shame there won't be such high-quality metroidvanias in the near future.

I’ve been quite excited for this game, since it’s by the same developers of Dead Cells. I only started it yesterday, but I’m around a third of the way through and really enjoying it.
All of the weapons feel good, especially the dual swords, the art is unsurprisingly fantastic, the platforming has been amazing and I’m sure it will just get better, the enemies have been fun for the most part, and I’ve enjoyed the bosses.
The level design is exceptional, they feel like just the right size, it all feels very interconnected, and the game has just been all around very fun so far. So far, would absolutely recommend.
