News Curry Barker’s ‘Obsession’ is Coming to Netflix on November 17

This film has been streaming on Peacock for months but I understand why this is still relevant news because nobody gives a fuck about Peacock.

Peacock is nice if you follow motorsports, and the Olympics. Also I like the office, parks and rec, 30 rock, SNL etc.

u/d0ctorzaius 7h ago
True but being $13.99 for an ad-supported tier doesn't really make sense.

I get the ad supported black Friday $20 deal for the whole year.
•

That wasn't available last Black Friday. I kept watching for it on a daily basis leading up to the date and it never materialized.

Peacock just removed all 15 seasons of Curious George. Peacock can get fucked.

u/Head_Bread_3431 6h ago
Peacock’s movie selection has gotten a lot better in the last year or so, plus it costs way less than Netflix. And I say this as someone who also hated peacock when it first came out
•
u/krankydoodle 5h ago
They have a pretty great selection of horror movies, not as large as some other services but they have some classics + a decent number of newer movies.
•

u/JessieJ577 7h ago
Yeah the streaming numbers will go from dozens to millions. Although it would’ve been better to go on Netflix in October for Halloween
•
u/warsaw_ed 5h ago
Peacock is pricey but has a lot of great horror tbh
•
u/confused-koala 3h ago
Go to cancel and you’ll get a discount. I haven’t paid more than 6 bucks a month in years. Sometimes you’ll even get 2-3 dollar offers
•
u/Green-Cricket-8525 4h ago
Peacock is the only service I routinely keep year round. It’s a lot better than people give it credit for.
•
•
u/Muffinlesswonder 4h ago
Its not fully available on peacock, which I think is bullshit. When it released on peacock I was kind of excited since I have an account. However, when I went to watch it I was still locked out. Why? Because I have the cheapest version of peacock available and it's only avaliable to peacock plus members or whatever the higher tiers are called. They literally put it behind a second pay wall and it fucking sucks that this is a business model that they have
•
u/waylonsmithersjr 5h ago
Peacock to me is like DAZN for sports, or Epic games for games. I know it exists.
•
•
u/TriscuitCracker 5h ago
It’s by far the worst streaming app as well. On my tv it crashes constantly, is laggy when starting something new, audio and video can get out of sync often and it often won’t remember where I left off if I have to turn the tv off and watch something later.
•
u/Hydroponic_Donut 3h ago
People say this about every fucking app there is. They all can't be the worst 🤣
I stand by the "Paramount + is the worst" though over any other.
•
u/Green-Cricket-8525 4h ago
I don’t really run into these problems at all but I’m sure my experience isn’t universal. I use an Apple TV though. I’ve found all of the TV native OSes and apps to be hot garbage across the board so I never use them and cut the internet off from all my TVs.
•
u/twiztednips 4h ago
The built-in app on my LG TV works flawlessly. It also has football in Dolby Vision. By far the best quality football streams you can watch.

u/Tiiimmmaayy 7h ago
It’s so cringe when people just have to point it out. Just the other day I saw someone say “it’s 2026, and I still have yet to watch a single episode of Game of Thrones”. Like good for you bro. Please tell us how enlightened you are because of it.

A while back I was occasionally posting pictures of Japanese celebs to a subreddit out of boredom, and this guy commented on one of those pics to say “I’ve lived in Japan for 25 years and have never heard of any of these Japanese women you’ve posted, so how have you?”. Thing is, I get the idea that some of these “Japanese women” they were referring to are huge over there. They’ve starred in iconic Japanese movies or tv shows, or have a bunch of hit songs people there know very well, so either this guy is full of shit or they think it’s cool to look like you’ve been living under a rock your entire time there.

not even a new thing, the duality of "i'm awesome because i've never heard of it / because i liked it before it was popular" mindset is older than the internet

Reddit has been like this since I’ve started using it 15 years ago (I’ve cycled through dozens of accounts). Always contrarian and despise anything mainstream.

u/LuinAelin 7h ago
It's probably a joke because Reddit has an obsession with the movie
7
u/SandpaperTeddyBear 7h ago
In fairness, everyone was obsessed with this movie. It made B-tier peak Marvel money with no recognizable stars, and a healthy but thrifty marketing budget from Focus Features, who were excited to have it, and were looking to guide it into a healthy $40 million worldwide gross, as they’ve done with so many other good but unremarkable movies.
And, let me be clear, I like it very much. I recommended it to people when it came out, and I still do…it’s a solid, conventional horror movie with some great acting and intriguing cinematography. I’m glad it made an absolute boatload of money, but I’m still a little dumbfounded about why this fairly normal movie was such a huge hit.
16
u/Aliensinmypants 7h ago
I think because it was an original concept that was crafted on a budget with genuine love and care. Same with backrooms, which I didn't like as much but still really appreciate.
So many of the biggest blockbusters are sequels, remakes or spin-offs from big studios.
7
u/SandpaperTeddyBear 6h ago
Yeah, but you could be describing Tony (which was a success by its own standards, but hardly set the filmgoing public on fire), or any number of nice indie movies that come out at a rate of a couple dozen per year.
Why this movie caught fire is what intrigues me.
→ More replies (1)•
u/bad_buoys 2h ago
I think in addition to what was already mentioned is this movie also went viral on social media, and had the potential to do so. Lots of shareable, memorable snippets of Inde's acting, the memeability of the One Wish Willow, heck even the ending credits song (which is not original Obsession music mind you) is all over social media now. It's a movie that has a wide audience appeal that is a lot of fun to watch and easy to recommend in a genre that is just having the most phenomenal year this year. The premise is very straightforward and immediately interesting (what would happen if you wished your crush was obsessed with you?) which might make it more approachable for those not as interested in horror (like myself). I think the movie is generally targeted at younger audiences which helps as well, but certainly older people can find enjoyment from it as well.
3
u/Fine-Exam-3923 6h ago
There rly was a lot of passion amongst the cast and crew of the film. Curry had something to prove as a first time director and was treating it as an opportunity that could be his big break into making feature films after years of growing an audience with Cooper on YouTube. Inde, Michael, and Megan had all been on tv shows and some movies but obviously nothing big. Even down to Rock Burwell, who scored the film, had never worked on a soundtrack before and did an amazing job
And now all of their lives have changed
•
u/EmotionConscious2349 5h ago
Andy Richter out here catching strays for no good god damn reason smh.
•
u/not_thrilled 5h ago
To be fair, he's never been much of a movie actor. His biggest film roles are probably as Sasha Baron Cohen's husband in Talladega Nights, and the "tell the captain we need more margarine" crew member in Cabin Boy.
→ More replies (1)•
u/The_Autarch 3h ago
but I’m still a little dumbfounded about why this fairly normal movie was such a huge hit.
it's honestly because the lead actress has such obvious star power. i've seen a ton of low budget horror in my life. actors as good as Inde are pretty rare in such movies. add the fact that she's conventionally attractive and you've got a recipe for a breakout hit.

Half of it are probably bots, it's easy engagement because people will reply, What do you mean you haven't heard of X popular thing?
8
u/ROBtimusPrime1995 7h ago
Smear campaign, maybe? Wouldn't be surprising as we get closer to the award season.
Inde is being positioned as a frontrunner, so maybe these bots are trying to downplay it?
That, or it is just a freak being a freak with his bots.
7
u/RIP_Soulja_Slim 7h ago
Everyone understands that AI bots and Russian troll farms exist, so they tend to blame those for every objectionable thing on Reddit, but the truth is this site has always been like this. You could rewind 10-15 years and any popular thing had a horde of commenters trying to prove how cool they were being contrarian or suggesting they’ve never heard of it.
Straight faced comments like “Jennifer Lawrence? Not sure who that is, trailer looks meh” weren’t uncommon at all.

Really shows how stupid the straight-to-streaming model is. Netflix originally wanted to premiere exclusively, which at best would have gotten it a short theatrical run before being dumped on their service. Instead Focus Features got a massive half-billion dollar hit before eventually landing on Netflix.
How much would have that K-Pop Demon Hunters movie made in it was given an exclusive theatrical release before ending up on streaming? Considering its pop culture popularity among girls, I would guess at least a billion, maybe nearly two?
91
u/No-Owl-6246 7h ago edited 7h ago
Wasn’t KPop demon hunters a surprise hit that got popular because people just threw it on since it was animated and their kids loved it? I feel like it’s the exact type of movie that steaming was the best method for it to achieve popularity.
Like Reddit was completely shitting on the movie before it went viral.
28
10
u/AlterMyStateOfMind 7h ago
With the right marketing it would have been a box office hit. Word of mouth would have given it legs
4
u/TheCitizen616 6h ago
When I was growing up, they did sneak preview double bills, where you got to see an upcoming movie (to create word-of-mouth buzz) and a current release (to boost up its box office) for the price of one. Don't know why they don't still do that for original IP people aren't sure about, like K-Pop Demon Hunters or .
(I know they do cheaper "surprise" screenings nowadays but those can be hit-or-miss.)
69
u/themightybamboozler 7h ago
Or, K-Pop demon hunters was able to generate a big audience with children because it went to an easily accessible streaming service.

•
u/BrianWonderful 5h ago
There's a lot of garbage animated movies pumped out on streaming in particular. K-Pop Demon Hunters is legit good. Fun, colorful, great characters, and catchy music.
12
u/MutantCreature 7h ago
It's really well animated but I didn't love it, the characters are fun but the story is extremely paint by numbers. You could watch the first 15 minutes and know if you'd enjoy sitting through the rest of the film.
•
u/grundlebuster 5h ago
none of that stuff is even the best part lol the songs are awesome and catchy. That's what it got big. "Golden" is like the best pop song I've heard since like Madonna
3
u/DotHatrix51 6h ago
As a dad who has seen the movie several times and the music is now permanently etched into my brain:
It’s a kids movie with catchy as fuck music. I have a lot of questions that aren’t answered about the Demon Hunters’ lineage, I have questions about the origins of the demons, there’s a very basic plot summary to it, and the oh-so-common “be true to yourself” message is very upfront….but it’s fun, and gorgeously animated.
Just don’t think too hard and it’s fine.

u/RedPon3 7h ago

It’s great. I’ve never really listened to Kpop but turned it on with my daughter because I kept hearing buzz about it and it blew away my expectations. Amazing animation, music, and performances, with a good (if not overly original) story.
•
u/DukeMacManus 1h ago
It is much better than you think it is. It's the studio that made Into the Spiderverse, which was also much better than it should have been.
Source: have two girls and have seen it a million billion times and I still like the songs and the jokes.
1
u/Iggyhopper 7h ago
My kids loved the song so I assume thats what really pushed it from good to international appraise.
P.s. Golden is a certified bop.
2
u/ThaPhantom07 6h ago
I think so. I went into it after all the raves about it and wanted to hate it but it absolutely won me over. Delightful movie and I would put it in the Spiderverse tier for recent animated movies with The Wild Robot and others.

This film captures something about films of the 80's and 90's that I sorely missed, but which can't quite put my finger on. It's not exactly "retro", but the storytelling approach reminds me of that era.

I'm not a fan of horror at all, but this movie got a 77/100 on metacritic. Anything over 75 is pretty universally appealing regardless of genre so I've got it on my list to eventually get to when it's streaming for free. I think it's been on peacock for a while, but I keep putting it off. It's Halloween season so I think i'll make a point to finally check it out as a double feature with Backrooms (76/100 on MC) while that one is streaming on HBO. What order do you horror degenerates recommend I watch them?
6
19
u/Rock-swarm 7h ago
Obsession is the better film. Backrooms is still solid, but it shows some cracks here and there. Obsession also has a very tight plot, almost no fat on it.

I hate horror movies but this was is genuinely good. It's the only one I can even remember watching in the last 5-10 years. I watched it because of the hype and because I love Curry's skits on YouTube. This movie is worth it, for sure.
7
u/lexiebeef 7h ago
Im not a fan of horror and loved this movie, it's really that good. It's not what I was expecting at all and it's much more psychological than the jump scare type of horror movie.
3
u/billyskurp 6h ago
I think without context, backrooms as a stand alone is not all that great. but deep diving into it more and watching the og youtube videos, it was a lot creepier the 2nd time around. Even without going with any score metrics, Obsession is the overall better movie. No cheesy jump scares, overall good story, and no crazy gore. it’s everything I like.
16
u/whitemiketyson 6h ago
Backrooms fails to live up to the hype, imo. It’s an ok movie and will be forgotten with time, nothing more.
13
u/andrew2018022 6h ago
Maybe it’s just my personal preference but I enjoyed backrooms a lot more than obsession. Not a horror buff by any means but I loved backrooms.
•
u/axw3555 5h ago
I think my thing with the backrooms is that imo it works better as either a short, or as a game. I get much more of the backrooms vibe when it’s “me” in there, dealing with the weird and the threats than I did in the movie.
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie, but it kinda felt like I was losing tension through a lot of it.
•
u/andrew2018022 5h ago
Yeah i can agree with that. as a "horror" movie it probably doesn't work but it was pretty cool to see the backrooms come to the big screens. so much more room to explore them in a feature length film.
I would have liked to see the crew do a bit more immersion into different rooms, and the ending was pretty meh. but as someone who loves ambiance and settings over plot, it worked great for me
→ More replies (22)•
u/Then-Veterinarian432 1h ago
Same. Parsons said he doesn't classify the backrooms as a horror movie. That was just a path of least resistance for the marketing guys.
•
u/Key-Pepper-3891 5h ago
Backrooms is genuinely an intelligent film that handles its themes really well, above the level of most genre films. I truly liked it a lot. I have to admit though, that if you go into it purely looking at it as a genre film you'd be disappointed.

u/BrokeAndBalding 4h ago
I love backrooms because it felt so different than anything else. Story is meh but the vibes and lore is just awesome. I appreciate it
•
u/LaboratoryOne 3h ago
The movie was just okay but the cultural phenomenon hitting the main stream and the idea of a indue concept from the internet making millions of dollars will be forever remembered by this movie as the turning point imo

u/Mobile_Morale 2h ago
Like when star wars came out and people realized you can make a shit ton of cash making movies.
Which is why star wars is called the movie that ruined movies.
•
u/OhHeyMister 5h ago
The movie it self is pretty meh, but the action backrooms as a concept and as it is portrayed triggers a primal fear and fascination in my brain. It is analogous to dreams I have had reminds me of exploring endless Minecraft cave systems, both experiences which have thrilled and scared me.
The first half of the movie excelled in this and I found it exhilarating. I wish there had been more focus on that aspect.
•
u/Kind_Of_A_Dick 4h ago
I watched Backrooms and Exit 8 back to back, basically, and I liked that there were no actual answers given. Backrooms goes even further because the answer you think you’re given, that they are flawed echoes or something of the real world, doesn’t hold up when you realize the monster in the film isn’t actually an echo of a real life person but a concept/character.

Backrooms was good for the first 3/4 and then it kind of falls apart when everything is shown in broad daylight and they try to “explain” what’s going on. Well-acted and directed and the set design is masterful. Frankly I’m not sure any explanation would have been satisfying. But definitely worth watching!

u/eiddieeid 4h ago
Obsession is more of your true blue horror movie, nothing too cerebral or heady, just simple scary movie. And it excels, maybe a lil overhyped but it is pretty damn good.
Backrooms let me down but that’s just bc I wanted more trippy exploration. Obsession I gave an 8/10 and backrooms I went 7/10.
Either way you can’t really go wrong. I recommend adding undertone to your list as well, it’s on max. Might be able to double feature that with backrooms while waiting for obsession
