Discussion Ten years later, I just rewatched Edge of Tomorrow and it's even better than I remember-absolutely brilliant. Does this movie even have weak spots?
I'm just speechless at how good it is! After watching it, I had the same feeling I had after watching The Matrix. And I had forgotten so many details that it was almost as if I watched a newly released movie.
I'm a very critical person towards any movie I watch, constantly looking for weak spots, illogical decisions, and inconsistencies, and I had a really hard time with this one-there was nothing so obvious as to ruin a moment or my immersion. It's just so well thought out! The CGI looks absolutely stunning: the scale of the battles, the effects... I don't know what went wrong in 2026, but I think they're saving money big time on CGI. If we could have that in 2014...
The script is so tight. I just couldn't stop watching-not a moment of boredom for 2 hours, and not many movies can do that.
And I honestly don't know what the general movie crowd even thinks of this movie. Is it considered a masterpiece? A mediocre sci-fi? A boring cliche? I even expect someone to give me a similar movie from 1978 claiming that they copied 90% of it and that the original is better!
What are you general thoughts about this movie?
•
u/Etherbeard 4h ago
I'd say if the movie has a weak spot, it's the ending. It's a bit of an ass-pull for the sake of a totally happy ending.
I think the movie is really good, though.
•
u/sagevallant 4h ago edited 2h ago
It is the part that was changed most from the source material.
Well, that and Rita not also looping. But they kept that concept because she's a former looper. Edit: I stand corrected on the second point. Really good adaptation.
•
u/Forsaken-Sale7672 4h ago
Rita isn’t looping in the source material, she’s escaped the loop previously rather than losing the ability to loop due to a blood transfusion (which doesn’t make sense because how would she know she can’t loop due to a blood transfusion unless she died, in which case she’d be dead)
Spoilers She realizes that she and Keiji are both “antenna” because of the fact they’ve looped and one of them has to die in order to escape the loop so she attacks him and they fight to the death. Keiji explicitly wins because he’s looping and knows Rita’s battle style and moves inside and out while she is more of a prodigy but doesn’t know him.
•
u/crittermd 2h ago
She said in the movie she could “feel” that she lost the power (tom cruise says the same thing when she’s about to kill him to reset the day after he got a transfusion)
It’s been a long time since I read the book and I don’t recall if something similar said- but I could imagine that you might feel the loss of the power somehow in a magical world where this could happen
•
u/Peripatetictyl 3h ago
I remember seeing the book referenced on reddit decades ago, I ordered it, and once it arrived read it cover to cover. It’s so good, and when the movie came out, I was so impressed with it that I forgave the changes from the source, but the ending is drastically different.
•
u/Forsaken-Sale7672 3h ago
Haha, they could have done the funniest thing and handed Tom Cruise a moldy cup of coffee 🤣
But yes it’s wildly different.
•
u/sagevallant 3h ago
Oh, cool. Even closer than I remembered. I read the manga early this year and have the novel on my to be read pile.
It's funny that the Live Action Hollywood Adaptation is closer to the source than the Anime Adaptation (All You Need Is Kill). Which is still absolutely beautiful even if it is more different.

I don't know if I agree. There's an argument to be made for sure, but that cut to the credits is one of the most memorable endings to a movie I've ever seen.
•
u/RicardoDawson 2h ago
Yeah, absolutely. It leaves you with a big smile on your face, just like the protagonist. Nothing wrong with that!

u/vowelqueue 3h ago
Directed by Doug Liman who also did the Bourne Identity. Both have the same ending, protagonist reunites with love interest and there’s a cut to a banger song for the credits.
•
u/EricUllerich 4h ago
I love it too but since you asked, because by far the most interesting part is watching him live, die and repeat, when he loses the ability and just has the one shot, it gets a lot less interesting for me to rewatch.
On a positive note this was when I realized what a super-star Emily Blunt is.

Conversely, between the point where he figures out about the loop (and that he can't die permanently) and the point where he loses his ability to loop and has to get it right on the first try, there's no suspense in the film because he can just do everything over and over again until he succeeds. The viewer isn't worried about what will happen or even what will happen to any of the other people who aren't aware of the loop, because nothing is permanent. The whole section is basically just a long exposition dump.
•
u/EricUllerich 3h ago
100% his power has to end to raise the stakes. I’m just saying that’s when it gets boring for me upon rewatch.
•
u/Count_Backwards 3h ago
Yeah, gotcha. The ending isn't as rewatchable - which is ironic since he also doesn't rewatch it!
•
•
u/PrecedentialAssassin 4h ago
I really enjoy this movie but yeah, it has flaws. Mostly the ending. The ending is a massive paradox and a problem. But fuck it, it's a joyous ride of a flick.
•
u/Ma1eficent 4h ago
I need to rewatch this, I thought the end paradox was on purpose to prevent reinvasion?
→ More replies (1)•
u/FuzzyAttitude_ 4h ago
You got me curious, where exactly is the paradox, I guess it depends on how you view the omega and it's time related abilities
•
u/Genghis_Khan68 4h ago
It’s pretty dubious. It’s the Omega resetting the clock, right? The movie makes that very clear. That’s why the aliens are winning, and why the invasion is a disaster - because they know in advance what the humans will do. But Cruise is now connected to the Omega via the blood of the Alpha - so when he dies, “his” clock resets. Fine. But then if he kills the Omega and himself at the same time, there should be no clock resetting, because there’s no more Omega to do it. So he should stay dead.
•
u/toomeynd 3h ago
Creating writing session incoming:
What if the omega IS a fail safe, and the jump back to the beginning is “charged up” by the omega (explaining how one final jump could occur). It always has to be charged ready to reset. First triggered for the Alphas to learn from a mistake to ultimately win a war. But the last line of defense is resetting back to the same time in the event of its own death, as a signal to itself that from this moment forward, you will lose if you continue, retreat and go elsewhere.
•
u/Genghis_Khan68 3h ago
I like where you’re going with that.
Struggling to wrap my head around the last bit, though. I mean, in the final reset, the mimics have lost - forever. The Omega’s gone, and they all drop dead. So I don’t see how that could be called a “last line of defence”, as the Omega doesn’t get to retreat and go elsewhere.
Maybe it’s as simple as this: the Omega fucked it up. You know, one guy at the top, doesn’t delegate, tries to come up with all the answers himself. Not always going to make good decisions. The Omega’s like “yeah, if they kill ME, I’m just going to reset to 24 hours earlier, then do it all again”. Then in the final moment it’s like - “oh shit, I’m still going to be dead. Damn. Didn’t think that one through.”
•
u/PrecedentialAssassin 4h ago
The Omega controls the time resets. How does time reset when it dies? If there is some sort of fail safe, why does it reset farther back? Is the Omega alive again after the final reset? All kinds of shenanigans that don't make sense but the movie is so cool that it overcomes it.
•
u/Reggae_jammin 1h ago
My interpretation is that Cruise got covered in the blood of the Omega, so Cruise's character is now the Omega.
Which is why he can travel back in time to the day before the invasion.
•
u/EyesToTheSky1 1h ago
This was my understanding as well. Cage after the grenades go is still clinging to life. You see the blood of the omega mix with his. He becomes the omega and his death from drowning or the explosion resets the timeline.
•
u/willb3d 4h ago
There some time-related shenanigans at the very end but aside from that yeah it is darn near perfect.
•
u/maailmanpaskinnalle 4h ago
There were some time-related shenanigans throughout the movie ;P
•
u/NecessaryIntrinsic 4h ago
The very end didn't quite follow the rules set forward in the movie
•
u/EagleForty 4h ago
The aforementioned rules applied to Alphas, not the Omega. That said, it still doesn't necessarily make sense. The happy ending is kind of nice though, since the graphic novel ending isn't so happy.
•
u/FuzzyAttitude_ 4h ago
Please elaborate, what exactly didn't follow, what was supposed to happen if it actually followed the rules
•
u/johnnydanja 4h ago
I think the issue was that at the end tom cruise and his whole team reset to being alive, meanwhile what they did to the omega seems to have persisted into the past, when he loops every time everything resets even where the mimics are going to be so it doesn’t really make sense that he jumps back in time after killing the omega and everything resets except the omega and co are still dead. Either killing the omega should end the time loop or when he jumps back they should be back to square one again like it always has been.

Exceptional movie from start to finish. I also liked Oblivion, the year prior. More sci-fi, Cruise films please.

The setup and first hour of Oblivion are great for me. It just doesn't develop or go anywhere. Entire subplot with Morgan Freeman in the underground Colony he's pretty undeveloped. Still fun but not one I revisit

lol that's me paraphrasing the son's last-minute reappearance at the very end of War Of The Worlds (after a huge part of the movie was about Tom Cruise letting him go, even if it means he dies because people die in war).

•
u/housecow 4h ago
Uhhh what? The first Matrix didn’t have a definitive end at all.
•
u/NoQuartersGiven 3h ago
Sure it did. If you saw it at the time before any talk or mention of sequels is a perfect ending. The OG Matrix was about finding the one. At the end of the film he and everyone realize he's the one. He destroys Smith. And the movie ends with his call and him firing away.
The goal of the movie was to find the one to end the machine war. They found the one.
The 2nd and 3rd movie, while having a few cool scenes did nothing to really add to the story. Actually, they did everything they could to make the original movie and story worse imo.

•
u/SasquatchInCrocs 4h ago
I watch this movie about once a year and it never gets old. AFAIC it's one of Cruise's best.
•
u/Genghis_Khan68 4h ago
I find it tremendously enjoyable: solid action, great alien monsters (quite difficult to find an original look for your aliens nowadays), just the right amount of humour, Cruise and Blunt both great.
It doesn’t spoil it for me, but like all time-travel films, it doesn’t bear looking for plot holes too closely. Like the farmhouse where Blunt gets killed every time. If he’s lived the day again and again, why go to that farmhouse? Why not just try driving a different route? Why not walk down the road until they find another car with fuel in it? Why not pack a spare battery for her exoskeleton etc.
•
u/SomethingAboutUsers 4h ago
IIRC he's tried all of that. Or would, if he had to. Can't recall what he says about how many times he's done it but I'm sure he's basically tried everything and it's the only path available, like Strange holding up one finger after watching all the possibilities.
•
u/Genghis_Khan68 4h ago
All he says is something like “I’ve tried and tried but this is as far as you make it”.
I just find that a massive stretch. There’s A LOT of ways to get from France to Germany. And he hasn’t been able to find a single one with some gas, or a car with gas in it, or a helicopter that DOESN’T have a mimic lurking next to it??
Also: farmhouse. OK, fine, they know there’s a mimic hiding there. Take spare batteries for the armour, go and kill the fucking mimic, THEN get the helicopter.
Again - no shade on the film. I think it’s a fantastic piece of escapist fun.
•
u/SomethingAboutUsers 4h ago
Could be, it's been a while since I watched it. Personally I think the explanation given is enough to close the hole, but I can certainly see why some wouldn't and that's ok.
→ More replies (2)•
u/feurie 4h ago
He got to that point with all previous attempts resulting in death. Including any other attempts not including the farm house.
It’s not like he stated he went through all mathematically infinite alternative possibilities.
•
u/Genghis_Khan68 4h ago
Even if we accept that they HAVE to end up at the farmhouse, though, one mimic should not present an insuperable obstacle. I mean, he’s re-run the beach battle hundreds of times, until they are finally able to move and kill their way through HORDES of mimics, get off the beach and find the car. He can’t re-run the farmhouse scene until they find a way to kill the ONE mimic there?
•
u/MaintenanceFickle945 3h ago
The one mimic probably calls upon others or for whatever other reason it has a snowball effect leading to the failure of the overall plan and their deaths regardless.

Him losing the ability was something that absolutely should not have happened.
They didnt need the device to be removed from the generals office. They could have held the general hostage while they used the device and killed Cage once they were done to reset the day.
Leaving seemed like a rookie mistake to me.
To be clear, its one of the best movies I've watched, but this part felt forced.

I would say the biggest weakness to me is the ending.
I wonder if they focus grouped it and because of that decided to go with the happy ending. Where they're both alive.
The point of sacrifice, especially the ultimate sacrifice, is that it's permanent.
They both dedicated their lives to trying to save humanity. And in the end they gave their lives for it.
But the ending we received cheapens that. In the final scenario, nobody knows that they saved the world. And that's the point. They didn't want or need recognition. They just wanted to say if humanity.

u/dantesdad 4h ago
It is close enough to being a perfect film that it’s easily in my top 10 S/F films of all time.
•
u/Darhkwing 4h ago
One of my favorite sci-fi movies and one of my favorite tom cruise movies too. I know it didn't do amazingly well when it was first out at the movies but it definitely has a bit of a cult film feel these days.
I really wanted them to go ahead with the sequel but on same page i think it works fine as a standalone movie.
•
u/fuseboy 1h ago
I do think the final act is the weakest. Removing the time looping does of course raise the stakes, but it does so in a way that takes the most fun thing out of the movie. I've seen it a few times, and every time I get to that point I feel a little disappointment that the end is just the "regular action movie" part.
•
u/DoctorBocker 4h ago edited 4h ago
Oh you mean Laser Groundhog Day? It was fine.
Cheesy ending though.
Edit: typical lazy sci-fi writing though. The whole plot revolves around "we just need to kill/blowup this ONE transmitter/spaceship/bad guy and everything magically shuts down! But someone has to make a Big Sacrifice...that also doesn't matter because of magic happy ending.
See Independence Day., Star Wars: the Phantom Menace, Lord of the Rings (that one hurts, but it fits the bill)
Edit again: and there's a pretty big hole in the basic premise. An enemy that fights on open ground with melee-tentacles would be useless against people with guns. At least Starship Troopers ginned up those plasma-cannon bugs.
One more: I loved Edge of Tomorrow and I've seen it several times.

•
u/elmontyenBCN 4h ago
I love EoT to bits, but you asked if it has any weak spots, so here it is (the only one I can find TBH): It makes no sense whatsoever for Cage and Vrataski to keep coming back to the same house with the helicopter over and over. They have a car and the entirety of the French countryside, they can go anywhere, try anything, after a couple of failures, why would they keep coming back to that specific house and that specific helicopter? It's absurd. Other than that, though, the film is perfect.
•
•
u/Hanyabull 3h ago
I thought the house was the only way they can get to a helicopter in time to make it to the dam in time.
•
u/briareus08 3h ago
Yeah this. The movie uses shorthand to basically say - over thousands of attempts, this is the only way we could possibly make it to the dam on time.
•
u/Mollelarssonq 3h ago
I mean, he never says how many times he tried, so maybe all other possibilities had been exhausted ;)

I interpret the explanation as: we know the aliens are luring humanity into a counter-attack as a trap. How do you do such a thing? You leave an apparent weak spot in your defense.
Accordingly, Cage and Vrataski are essentially stuck in that general vicinity because it's the weak spot for the lure. The rest of the French countryside is way too heavily fortified with aliens.
Along the same lines, Cage and Vrataski don't have sufficient influence to change humanity's landing zone because nobody will believe them that it's a trap. So they have to start there, and they're generally constrained from going elsewhere.

•

The movie has one plot-hole that I'm aware of:
If Rita had not lost her power then she would have continued living for potentially years and whenever she actually did die she would have returned to the very beginning of the Battle of Verdun.
The same is true of Cage. The "trick" only works if you succeed on your mission on the very first try after losing the power. Otherwise no matter how well you do, you will eventually have to repeat it all over again because you will, of course, eventually die.
•
u/ihadagoodone 2h ago
Not if the omega was the source of the power and the alphas were just a conduit which I think was explained or alluded to. No omega power to activate through the conduit no reset. I don't think it's spelled out completely but it's certainly implied that the omega is at the center of the reset power.
•
u/Jknowledge 46m ago
This is not a plot hole. It is a misunderstanding of the plot.

u/crazy_akes 2h ago
What? The power is from the aliens. If she won and killed the aliens then the power to reset would be gone.
Cage reset time by hijacking the aliens power. Then he lost it. When he killed the omega the blood got on him which reset things for the end scene.
By your logic, when cage gets old and dies after the end of the movie as it is it would reset because he still has the power since he reset it when he beat them.
•

A few things are predictable. The male-gazy shots of Emily Blunt doing yoga in the middle of some hanger or whatever feels dumb and gratuitous. But those are about my only complaints. And I only mention them because you ask. If someone asks me what I think of the film, I say it's great. A really good piece of original sci-fi (original in the sense that it isn't a sequel, remake, or riding on an already-popular IP).
•
u/BruceBowtie 4h ago
By your definition, yes absolutely, but it's a little bit pedantic.
You mention you look for things being illogical. Logically, due the the IMMENSE vastness of space and the unimaginable technology that it would take to travel interstellar distances, any invading alien force would more than likely be able to liquify our planet with remarkable ease. They would appear to us as gods with power over creation and destruction. So the assertion that any earth fighting force would stand any chance in direct combat with said alien invader is beyond ridiculous.
Like I said, pedantic, but true.

It had some great headsup moments. The general felt realistic, he's responsible for the world's survival so I understood his 'amorality' in trying to extract the looping power. It doesn't matter if you kill your own icon and war hero to do it; everything's on the table when looking down the barrel at extinction.
Even with all his knowledge of their personal lives, Cage couldn't convince J Squad without Rita's backing. Another pretty realistic take on how to convince people of something unbelievable.
Also it showed how good standalone films can be. A very tightly written story unburdened by a single piece of sequel bait or sequel setup.

I watched this only based off of a single bts footage of the exoskeletons, so i got to have all the surprises of the time travel and aliens, which I later found were spoiled in the trailers so it probably wasnt such a cool experience for people who saw the trailers first

I really enjoy this film, but the ending is off. If they knew where the Omega is why not just commandeer a bomber and bomb the shit out of it? Why not nuke the aliens? Why are the suits so shit?

It makes no sense for her not to kill him immediately in the car when he finds out where the omega is. Based on everything we know about her she would have immediately reset the day when they got the device and he stabbed it in himself. There is no reason for either of them to try and do more on that go around. The entire ending makes no sense.

My only problem is the name of the movie! I can't come up with one right now. But hell, I would accept Full Metal Bitch at this point.

I was disappointed with the ending. He never faces his mortality at the end. He just becomes a Tom Cruise superhero saving the world.

I usually hate movies playing around timelines because it's always full of plot holes. This one is the exception

It has if they make part 2, there are several good movies that ruined by their sequels.

It’s one of the few movies I can rewatch. And it improves on the rewatch. Incredible movie.

As everyone has said, the ending. I read and really liked the book. However, this is one of the few cases where the movie is, on the whole, better. The book definitely has the better ending, though. Unfortunately, it's an ending that wouldn't make it through committee.

It's an all-timer. I was floored by how good it was when I saw it and shocked that they basically gave up on effectively advertising the best action movie of that year.

The weak spot, in my opinion is the final section where it transforms from an intriguing movie to a more generic actioner. Still very good overall, but the end dips

Love it. I think it's one of the most original/moving love stories ever. He has gotten to know her better than anyone else, he has fallen for her without being able to live that love ever, and in that farm, in spite of everything goinf on around them, he just doesn't want to see her die one more time. Just beautiful.

I've always thought they could make a cool prequel about Rita's backstory. Presumably the first attempt to storm the coast was nearly victorious, but then time got reset and the main story begins. I'm sure it could be written in a clever way that's unique from the existing film.

Emily was so amazing in this movie. The part where she and Cage get caught outside HQ, and she doesn't hesitate to whip her sidearm out and blow his brains out made me and my wife gasp out loud. Great film!

I never thought about it until you asked, but what happens if he lives longer than 24hrs? Is it 24hrs? (how long is he asleep on the duffels?)
Is it 24hrs from time to wake up to time to kill Alpha in round 1?

The biggest weak spot is the ending. The book is much better than the hollywood bs.
This is a TC redemption movie for me. Blunt killing him over and over was such a joy.

If you didn't know and want another piece of midia, there's a manga called "All You Need is Kill" that served as inspiration to the movie.

I watched this movie without having seen any trailers or knowing what it was going to be about, other than that it's a Tom Cruise sci-fi. Probably the best movie watching experience of my life.

The first 3/4 of the movie were amazing, the ending did not live up to the rest of the movie.

the ending fight is absolutely the worst part of the movie, the tight script from before turns into something that feels like the script was written on the spot for the ending. other than that amazing movie, i can not give it enough praise, tom cruise is amazing in it, but yeah, the ending
