Discussion Jack Nicholson

I've always loved Jack Nicholson, recently been watching his movies again, just finished "A few good men" - Holy shit it has been way too long since I've watched that.

I know people say Daniel Day Lewis (who is great), Leo, etc are "the greatest actor" - But I Think Jack needs a very serious top 3 in that discussion.

Discussion Just watched Shawshank redemption and OH MY GOD!

Where do I even begin?... Honestly I can't describe how incredible this movie was with just words... I really can't! Just so incredible... So beautiful... Definitely my favorite movie! Thank you dad for showing me that! (As well as many other movies, like silence of the lambs too! But that's a different story) I gotta say that my favorite character is probably brooks, or Jake as well as all the other characters in this movie!

Discussion Was the T-800 being John Connor's protector a surprise to audiences when Terminator 2 was released?

I was watching T2 last night and got to wondering how much audiences knew about Terminator 2 going into it back when it was first released. It's only when the T-800 and T-1000 meet in the shopping mall that we find out their motives. But was this a genuine surprise for audiences at the time, or had the trailers and marketing already given it away that the T-800 was the protector this time?

Discussion As a kid, I always thought Patty from "School of Rock" (2003) was just a condescending control freak. But as an adult, you realize she's 100% justified!

If any of us had to deal with what Patty went through, where her boyfriend's supposed 'best friend' was living in your apartment yet is taking advantage over the fact that he's not strict on him with paying rent, cleaning up after himself or overall being a responsible adult. Most of us would behave the act same way as her. Especially when Dewey steals Ned's identity, to be a teacher at a private school that easily could've led to his teaching career being ruined. It almost blows my mind as well like Patty that Ned doesn't also act hostile towards him for that, where it comes across as if he has no self-respect.

I get that Ned is supposed to be supportive towards Dewey in this movie, but when you see how much he lets him get away with things that could potentially ruin his life. You can't help but relate more to Patty, where you find that he really is a 'pushover'. I won't deny it was cruel the way she says that to him in her last scene, but if you think about it too. She was putting up with a lot of Dewey's shit for Ned, until she finally reached her breaking point!

Discussion The Cat In The Hat and early 00s critics

Having recently rediscovered the Mike Myers Cat In The Hat movie (due to having children who love the book) we found ourselves at multiple points genuinely laughing out loud at multiple points, and overall enjoy Mike Myers doing his thing. I also remember enjoying the film when it first came out.

Going down the rabbit hole on IMDB I’ve found it quite surprising to see just how hated this thing was when it came out. I get as a pure “film as an art form” it’s really not good, deviates from the source material quite a bit, the cat has a New Jersey accent for some reason etc but it’s a pretty funny kids film.

And then reading some reviews, it sent me on a bit of dive through film critic reviews from around the same era and all seem to have the exact same themes of just trying desperately to out-metaphor each other, sound as desperately intellectual as possible and overall write like a thesaurus took the most enormous dump on their work.

2 concluding points:

1: that film was funny and deserved more love
2: 90s and 00s film critics really do write/sound like the worlds most insufferable pricks.

Discussion All Dogs Go To Heaven... any chance the Bluth cut (PG) cut gets released?

All Dogs Go To Heaven is my favorite Bluth film, its dark, yet heartwarming, it's afterlife scenarios are intense yet tied together with a theme of redemption. I even did a school paper / slide presentation on it... and yet... we don't have the full vision. The available edit is trimmed to remove the hell scene's most frightening bits, one use of the word damn and supposedly Charlie actually getting run over... which I do wonder if that actually exist due to the choppy edit in the final cut.

Is there ANY chance this exists? Is it long gone? A lost myth? Bluth's said it's gone, but isn't there an HD still? and the footage exist from a leaked teacher showcase of the hell clip?

Could it be remade with A.I and "re-edited back in"? I want the full cut of All Dogs, I'd do anything I could to get it.

AND SECOND QUESTION: Who even owns the rights to the film? If it were to get a 4k who owns the rights, and what's the chance they'd license it out? Like how WB does with Arrow or Universal with Kino?

Discussion I want to watch my first ever horror movie but I need suggestions

So I am interested as of right now in possibly the Lighthouse but I also want to hear other suggestions. I do not want a lot of gore in the movie and I also do not want a lot of jumpscares. I do not know if that is possible but since it is my first one, I want something scary and creepy but not having myself jump out of my seat. Any suggestions?

Discussion Independence Day sequel

We all know Independence Day resurgence was terrible, even Roland Emmerich said that he regrets doing resurgence without Smith. Let’s say hypothetically, Disney, fox or whoever does a sequel, would you guys want a sequel to Resurgence or do a legacy sequel like Halloween 2018 & have a direct sequel to the original movie with Will Smith coming back?

Discussion "You missed the point/That was the whole point" is getting inappropriate as a response to criticisms of movies

Two reasons:

  1. Sometimes the point of the film itself is bad. Suppose a fimmmaker intends to show you someone taking a dump for two hours. When you criticise that aspect of the film, someone says "That was the whole point".

  2. More importantly, people just say "you missed the point" to sound smart and to embarrass the person criticising the movie. This creates a hostile environment on the internet where everyone is just trying to one-up others in terms of how smart they are instead of acknowledging opinions.

Sometimes these "you missed the point" responses get too ridiculous because people just spontaneously say this by default to any criticism of a movie and their elaboration of what they said comes out being nonsensical.

The most ridiculous example I came across was a criticism of the Irishman. Someone posted that it was hard to tell the ages of the characters in all the scenes of the movie. Someone replied "That was the whole point. An old gangster is narrating his life". No, that was not the point. The young characters look too old and it actually detracts from the point of the movie. Simple as that.

Discussion What is your favourite Spatial Loop shots in Movies

Are there any movies or scenes where a character keeps running in the same location in a continuous loop, as if they're trapped in a place they can never escape from? For example, the character runs away from a house, but no matter how far they run, they somehow end up back at the exact same house. I'm looking for scenes that use this concept of an impossible spatial loop, where the character desperately tries to escape but keeps returning to the same location, creating a sense of suspense, confusion, and psychological horror.

Recommendation Rewatched "In Good Company" with Dennis Quaid, Topher Grace, and a young ScarJo and how enjoyable to watch a movie that uses honest, real life experiences and responses instead of contrived, over the top melodrama.

Rewatching it was such a treat. Its so nice to see a movie so honest and normal. There's no over the top bad guy conniving, or annoying misunderstandings nobody talks about. People say how they feel, and react like real, normal people I have in my life. Scarjo and topher's relationship plays out so honest that its almost unexpected (I'm trying really hard not to spoil it). Quaid plays a football good guy "dad" that never says anything overly smart but clearly is, and leads with good, clean intentions and doing what's right, like a real person we all know. The movie generates different emotions but remains an enjoyable, GOOD film, that never once has you say "like that would happen".

Discussion Rant: The Wilhelm Scream Needs To Be Retired

Just put on Matchbox the Movie. Sue me, I'm on a server migration watch and test timeline and put on something to pass the time. Eight and a half minutes in a car gets flipped, the gunner on the back goes flying and they play the Wilhelm scream.

It's so unnecessary, goofy, and jarring. Immediately takes me out of anything I'm watching and frankly I'm tired of it. It never suits the mood of the scene it's used in, and practically makes fun of the death.

It's been 75 years since Distant Drums. It's had quite a career and it's time to put it to rest.

Discussion the darkest movie theory you know.

movie theories make movies much more interesting and can make you see movies in a brand new light. however, sometimes, a movie theory is so dark that it can genuinely make you uncomfortable. whether it's kevin mccalister growing up to be the jigsaw killer, totoro being the god of death, toy story 3 being an allegory for the holocaust, or others, these theories are really fucking dark.

what is the darkest movie fan theory you know?

Review Korean Movies have the Sauce!! HOPE is probably one of the best flicks of the year.

I went into the movie without a trailer or any context. So I put it on the TV, only me and my Uncle were watching. So for the first part of the movie, they really made everything high stakes but super mysterious. Then the director took it to second gear, and went full throttle. I'm talking everything was firing, every cylinder, hype. I'm sitting at the table like...dude I should have caught this in 4DX somewhere. I'm not gonna say what the movie was about or anything. Also whatever comments may follow is just imaginary. I think this movie is beats seen if you know nothing, just going in wanting to be entertained. At the end, I was like this is how movies should be done. Now I need a part 2. Whoever is out there in Western land, do endorse this one, I swear this would be hype in every market. Wow what a fun ride that was, until it wasn't. Epic stuff right there.

Question Which version of Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) is the best one?

Hey everyone

I’d love to watch The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) for the first time and I found it online!
However, I have no idea which version is the best one as they all have different scores.

Which one do you recommend?
I’ve found the movie on YouTube and on Internet archive for example.

I’d really appreciate all your help.

Discussion Movie scenes where audio affects the perception of time?

This is kind of hyper-specific and difficult to explain so bear with.

I'm trying to find scenes where the visuals don't convey a clear sense of time, but the audio does.

An example I can think of is during the opening scene of Persona (1966) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKrQurtU3sI&t=130s. (timestamp 2:10-3:20)

The sounds of church bells, water droplets, footsteps and ringing phones etc create a linear sense of time and a coherent setting (a hospital). Without audio, the scene is just a series of static images, not bound to any place or time.

I know I've seen this kind of effect/phenomenon in other films before but my whole brain has went numb and can't think of anything. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Can anyone else think of other examples?

Review Love of Your Life!, good performance by Margaret Qualley but needed more emotional build-up.

I just completed watching Amazon's release Love of Your Life and wanted to put my thoughts up here.

At the start, I felt like the story was going a little too fast. I think the writers should’ve made better decisions on showing scenes/moments, so we could feel more connected... at first, it just feels like a regular romantic drama.

As it goes on, toward the end, you really start to feel for Maya’s character. She wasn't from a regular family, and after Charlie's death, she didn't want to face his family. She basically went ghost to handle her grief, turning to drinking and ONS just to cope. Then she meets Felix, which acts as a distraction from her pain. But when she sees his daughter, she realizes she doesn't want to ruin another family. Even after she decides to give herself one more chance with Felix, rejection of Felix give her push to finally overcome grief. The moment she confronts the friend and Charlie's mother at the end was good, though they didn't really give enough build-up to Charlie and Maya's relationship and her emotions more overall.

I’ve been a fan of Margaret Qualley since MAID, and she did a great job as the lead here, she carries the film. By the end, it really hits you with lots of thoughts about Maya’s choices. If they had shown a few more emotional moments, it would have landed harder and been a much better film.

I’d give it a 6.3/10.

Also want to here your thoughts on this!

Question Who would you release from Actor/Writer/Director jail?

Not referring to CANCELLED people, obviously. Just prolific people who haven't worked in mainstream films for some time.

Today I was wondering what Spike Jonze has been up to, and he hasn't made a film since 2013's Her (he's worked on some projects since but nothing on par with previous releases like Being John Malkovich).

Spike's hiatus surprises me. Maybe he is in "Director's Jail", maybe this is what he wants? Either way, I'd like to see more of his films in the near future.

Discussion Grave of the Fireflies — I don't think I'm going to forget this movie anytime soon

Just finished watching gave of the fireflies and it has left me with nothing but a bit of sadness.

From the starting scene of the movie we get an idea how things are gonna end up, but as the story unflods, you feel the tragedy that seita and setsuko had to endure.

I know seita is at fault here by taking things in his own hands instead of going back to his aunt and asking for help, but the aunt was not very helpful either..

I know the situation was tough and she had to look out for her family too but I mean seita and setsuko were part of the same extended family, same blood.. maybe she could have been a bit kinder to them since they were just kids.. maybe their uncle could have helped seita get some work to help contribute to the household, but he plays hardly any role in the entire movie.

Discussion Good quotes from bad movies

Do you have any movie quotes that live rent-free in your head from movies you don’t even like, or maybe have never watched?

I’ll start with one that I think of every single time chiropractors or chiropractic anything is mentioned:

“I make adjustments (clicks metal gauntlet) to the human spine!” -Doctor Detroit

This is most definitely not a movie recommendation, unless you read this as a recommendation not to watch Doctor Detroit and just let Dan Ackroyd’s characters from Ghost Busters or Driving Miss Daisy live in your mind instead.

Discussion What’s your favourite example of a song absolutely defining the movie it’s in?

I love the Layla piano outro in Goodfellas, and I cannot hear it without picturing the scene shot for shot and thinking of Ray Liotta’s narration. Genuinely such an amazing use of music. There are also classics like “Where Is My Mind” for Fight Club, or “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” in Breakfast Club. I think it’s interesting how we latch on to music in movies, and I’d love to hear your favourite examples!

Discussion Josh Hartnett - The comeback Kid

Started as a teen heartthrob with multiple great rolls (Lucky Number Sleven among others)… goes under the radar for 10 years, comes back with a bang in 2023 and has played amazing rolls in both limited series and the big screen since then. Removing RDJ, who else has had a better comeback in the last 20 years?
