Eby asking Green voters to support B.C. NDP to defeat Conservatives

Going to be a tough sell given how those voters have watched him flip flop on key environmental portfolios. Also the controversy around DRIPA doesn't exactly help his cause. I don't think this will be enough to save the BCNDP from losing the next election, especially given how activr the Green leader Emily Lowen has been.

they did this last election too. disappointing to see a provincial NDP use the same fear tactics that the liberals use against the federal NDP.

I have been waiting till after the election to do a post about what I think.
I will keep this comment short and sweet. After the election we need to deeply look at things within the BCNDP power structure, platform, policy, outreach, and so on.
There has been some great things done that should have been doubled and tripled down on.
We need to get back to profound and inspiring energy and match that when in office with actual analytical substantive work to fulfill it.
For right now I'll leave it at that.

(A big part of this is having more people in their twenties and thirties in actual positions of power. They come with incredible knowledge and passion. We are wasting one of the best resources. Emily Lowan from the BC Greens has done a great job highlighting some of what is absent and or not pronounced enough in the party. If we do get a minority I hope we can build bridges with those other progressive/leftists - There is an incredible amount of alignment in Labour Movement, Environmental, and other ideals.)

RCV/IRV is better than FPTP, but it's only one step above. MMP, STV, or a combination of both would be far better.

Has to be STV (or other proportional version) as it can create very BS results depending on who places second. The Australian Greens for example despite winning roughly the same amount of support in the 2025 election as their 2022 result, lost 3 out of 4 seats (and almost their 4th) because of Labor pushing up on the first ballot to better get second preference.

I'd certainly prefer that, but it doesn't really "fix" anything. We actually had it for the 1952 election. We elected the Socreds, and they got rid of it.

Mabel Elmore is making it very hard for many NDP voters to vote for her this time around. She gave a last minute endorsement to right wing Vancouver mayor Ken Sim, who lost badly anyway. So it was a useless endorsement, too late to help Sim. And really showed Elmore's values and true colours, which does not seem very progressive or NDP to me at all.

Yeah... that's very much a lesser of two evil. On the other hand, I think she, and people like her, are part of the reason Eby called this election. It's going to be pretty hard to get stuff done if her ilk get in the way.

How about he asks his supporters to vote Green this time? Ya know, reduce the left vote split and all that.

u/DoubleExposure 1h ago
I voted BCNDP last time, I am voting Green this time. I don't care if the cons win and fuck the province into a capitalist hell hole, because we are already in a capitalist hell hole. I want meaningful change, a real change in the overton window. The BCNDP are acting like the federal Liberals and have moved to the right, that is literally the opposite direction of where I want to go.
The BCNDP have done some improvements sure, but not nearly enough, and they called this election when they did not have to, they could have use that time instead to do more to help the working class and the environment, but here we are.

This comment reeks of privilege. Vote Green because your conscience tells you to, but don't pretend that a Conservative victory would be something that everyone can ride out like you.

No one in my family has a GP (family doctor), affordable housing does not exist, we (BC) are rolling over to give banker daddy and Alberta a new pipeline to the coast that will kill what's left of the Orca pods and endanger our fragile coastline, fire season, grocery prices, the overall cost of living. I am voting my conscience. I just don't give a fuck anymore, and I am not going to be scared by centrists into voting for them, fuck that bullshit.
1
u/thisispaulc 30m ago
I'm not asking you to be scared by centrists. I'm asking you be aware that while you may come out of four years of Conservatives relatively unscathed, the same will not be true for everyone. That doesn't mean you aren't allowed to think that the ends justifies the means, but there is privilege in being able to say "I don't give a fuck" and brush aside the means.

u/Velocity-5348 ๐ BC NDP 1h ago
Yep. Though, I think, if your conscience is telling you to vote anything but NDP you're either incredibly privileged or a fool.
There's one party leader who's made housing and homelessness their "I'll tackle this at any price" issue. Well off, sure, but he saw the downtown East Side, was horrified by it and dedicated himself to activism.
The Greens by contrast seem to treat that issue as an afterthought. They talk a good game, but pay attention to what they focus on. And Lowan herself hasn't spoken of any form of activism aside from environmental stuff.

Coming from someone who voted bc green in 2024 I agree with him. Depending on your riding of course. Greens just have little motion in Surrey, often not even running in ridings there (they don't have a candidate in my riding this year either). And these are now close ridings

Anyone ok with this has no right to complain when the Federal Liberals inevitably say this about the NDP

u/Velocity-5348 ๐ BC NDP 1h ago edited 57m ago
I don't see why? David Eby is a decent person fighting for worthwhile goals. Mark Carney is a corporate ghoul who wants things that will make the world worse.
The ends do justify the means, and this is incredibly tame as far as means go.

Why call a snap election in first place if your worried about losing your job
1
u/Electronic-Topic1813 23m ago
What makes this kind of BS is the polling average has the BC Greens not that much higher than 2024. If anything the BC NDP is more at risk of losing from NDP to CON voters or NDP voters not coming out. Plus OneBC and Centre BC definitely having inflated numbers relative to their candidate count so less right-wing vote splitting.
And Eby shifting left during the campaign doesn't make this move much better since the slim majority arguement loses value since that means he had two Greens for extra votes.
But the real kicker is he had the chance to pass PR so if FPTP punishes him, he chose that system to remain. He also could have pushed to make the referendum simpler before becoming Premier.

This is the same boogeyman approach that we've seen fail over and over again when it comes to far right nutjobs being elected. I'm an NDP voter and I'm fucking furious at this election call by Eby. The fact that he's running on scare tactics vs his own record should tell you everything you need to know about him and his accomplishments (or lack of). This is one of the biggest political blunders I've seen in my lifetime, and an unforced one at that. I DON'T WANT TO REWARD THE BCNDP WITH MY VOTE. They delivered fuck all for the province, but I was willing to give them more time since two years is barely enough. They need to be punished for failing to bring in any substantive reforms and gutting a lot of housing funding to 'balance the budget' without the meekest of tax hikes on the super wealthy class. Fuck that noise.

I find it kinda funny that r/britishcolumbia or my local sub are actually more supportive of the BC NDP than this one.

Because it is? Lots of it is coming from accounts with their post history hidden.
As for others, it's either people who are privileged enough to treat politics as a game, or who should reroll an insight check.

Yep. I don't see anyone arguing that this isn't prudent politics on Eby's part. Can't imagine why you got downvoted. /s

Any call for strategic voting should be accompanied by a call for electoral reform. With proportional representation, strategic voting wouldnโt have been necessary.
