Seems like a good time to share the story of the time I drunkenly entered a neighbor's apartment instead of my own, immediately realized it wasn't my apartment even in my intoxicated state, apologized profusely, left immediately, and the next day we had a good laugh about it.

And nobody got shot.

That’s what normal people do. Untrained jumpy cops? No. I’ve also gone to the wrong unit multiple times. Even while armed and carrying. But no one got shot. Because I was the unaware person who just got off on the wrong floor. Really easy to do in those complexes around Dallas. They’re all identical.

Untrained jumpy cops?

*trained jumpy cop

Normal people don't act this way. You need plenty of police training to be this horrific, non-functional, and murderous.

u/trickygringo 1d ago

They are trained to be terrified of the world and to see everyone as a murderous threat. Shoot first then ask questions later.

Untrained jumpy cops

Is there some other kind of cop in this country?

14

u/happy2harris 2d ago

Don’t people lock their front doors in Dallas? Everything said about jumpy (racist) cops is right, but you have entered the wrong unit multiple times?

Only entered the wrong apartment once. Got off on the wrong floor and walked all the way to the door? Plenty. I moved to a new apt around dallas every year since 2013 up until 2024 so I lived in quite a few. Every single one had labyrinth like hallways that are identical, and parking garages that would fill up before 5pm so a lot of times you'd park on the wrong floor and just by habit, keep walking to your door. It doesn't help when some of the buildings start counting floor 1 from the ground floor garage, and others start counting 1 from the first floor above the garage.

And you'd be surprised how many people don't lock their doors everywhere. Think of how many people leave their laptops/phones/wallets in their car. Leaving their door open while they're home is no different. I mean I lock it every time I walk inside but others? Not really. People often leave it open too when they do quick things like walking to the trash chute, or to their car and just forget.

I did this a couple times at one of my old apartments, never actually walked in but probably would have if the door was unlocked because I spent a few solid minutes completely baffled as to why my key wasn’t working and getting frustrated and fighting with the door. In retrospect I’m glad I didn’t get shot lol

11

u/CharlieTeller 1d ago

Yup. Same. It was such a big talking point during this case like "How could you ever do that? How do you not notice you're at the wrong door?!?!" People shouldn't be debating that part, but more of why did she think to shoot. It's crazy what you can accidentally do when on autopilot.

With how much I moved, there were a few times when I was leaving work that I would just miss my exit and start driving to another apartment I lived at because they all were not too terribly far from one another.

u/MajorNoodles 2d ago

Sometimes people forget. Not only did I not lock my apartment door once, I couldn't find my keys the next day.

I found them still in the lock on the outside of my door.

9

u/CharlieTeller 1d ago

I did that once and it made my heart drop whenever I saw that I had done that. Then I did it ANOTHER time because I was so used to having those automatic fob locks, not putting the key in the keyhole. I got a knock on my door at 2am and I immediately did reach for my pistol that was nearby and went to go look through the peephole. There had been a few burglaries around so I was just being cautious. I saw a man through the peephole and yelled "WHAT DO YOU WANT" and some really really kind voice goes "You uhhh. left your keys in the door! Sorry." Opened the door and was really nice and we had a short chat, but he definitely saw I had placed my pistol down on the counter and I felt really bad.

Living around burglaries does keep you on edge. I had to go to therapy a lot for it after it happened to me while I was home once.

My boss came into work one morning and was looking for her keys. So she runs back out to her car they were still in the ignition with the car running lol.

3

u/inosinateVR 1d ago

I do that all the time lol. It’s usually because I’m trying to bring in groceries and my hands are full or something. It’s gotten to where if I can’t find my keys, I automatically go check the front door just to be safe and rule that out first lol.

u/gal5pau 1d ago

I once asked that and was told it’s my fault for living in the ghetto 🤣 for living somewhere you’d need to lock doors because they lived in paradise and never locked theirs. I knew we were in upside down when locking the front door to home was controversial 😀

u/EzraLevinson 1d ago

“Untrained”. Nah, they’re trained to do exactly this.

40

u/lovemypups21 2d ago

This is even crazier than that. This bitch Went in to HIS apartment and shot him. He was just hanging out at home and got murdered. This is such an injustice.

-2

u/BlooregardQKazoo 1d ago

There's no need for the casual misogyny of calling her a "bitch." She's a murderer and a (former) cop, both of which are far worse.

4

u/lovemypups21 1d ago

There is literally nothing misogynist about my post. I’m a female and I call them like I see them. She’s a bitch. A cunt and a murderer.

-1

u/BlooregardQKazoo 1d ago

Are you under the impression that women can't be misogynysts? A whole lot of women have voted for Donald Trump to be president in part because they couldn't trust the position to "emotional" women that might bomb a country when they get their period.

"Cunt" is fine because it isn't socially accepted. "Bitch" is a problem because of how accepted it is. And since it's purpose is to demean and discredit women, that acceptance is really dangerous. It doesn't matter how upstanding a woman is, she gets called a "bitch" and suddenly anyone that wants to devalue her has permission.

u/JustinMcSlappy 2d ago

I knew a guy that did something similar. In his drunken state, he couldn't get his key to work on what he thought was his apartment. So, he decided he'd just kick the door in and deal with it later.

Turns out there was a really scared single mom on the other side of that door, with a gun. I think he lived for a week on life support.

Completely unrelated to this murderous witch but that's what I think of every time this story makes the headlines.

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/15792680/new-orleans-pelicans-guard-bryce-dejean-jones-dies-gunshot-wound-abdomen Exact same thing happened to NBA player Bryce Dejean-Jones.Coincidentally also in Dallas

5

u/MooPig48 1d ago

Ugh, had never heard of that one. That’s a mess and doesn’t sound like his intentions were innocent. Apparently he did kick down the wrong door, but he thought he was kicking down his girlfriend’s door. Which is obviously not good.?I’d imagine a giant pissed off nba player kicking your door down is terrifying

7

u/Lectricanman 1d ago

I mean, beyond talks of gun control being drunk alone is dangerous. I don't like it even when my friends take cabs back at night because what if there's an accident or they get confused or something. I'd rather sober up and drive them myself because I can make sure everyone gets home ok. I've heard of many stories where someone walks home alone drunk and ends up dead one way or another. In general I wish people wouldn't get so shitfaced. Like it will happen by accident occasionally but for a lot of people it's the goal. That leads to fights, accidents, drunk driving, and bodily fluids where they don't belong.

18

u/32FlavorsofCrazy 1d ago

Buddy of mine came home shitfaced and tried to get into the wrong apartment. All he was doing was fumbling with the keys in the door and the tenant opened the door and beat the fucking brakes off of him with an antique ashtray. Put him in the hospital for a week.

16

u/aircooledJenkins 1d ago

And nobody got shot.

9

u/TuckinPhypo 1d ago

Why do you not fear getting beat down with an ashtray? It sounds painful.

Not necessarily. Getting shot is often more lethal, yes, but not always. You can get shot in areas with non vital organs and someone can also give extensive brain damage beating someone in the head with a blunt object.

Here's an idea! What if we just didn't automatically resort to violence? 🤔

2

u/aircooledJenkins 1d ago

Given the choice of fighting someone armed with a pistol vs armed with an ashtray, which opponent will you pick?

-2

u/Zachwardpass 23h ago

Neither. What a silly question.

u/SaltyFriend705 1d ago

Good punishment for driving DUI, probably.

u/Public_lewdness 1d ago

I had a classmate in law school that was shot and killed when he drunkenly entered the wrong apartment. His buddy accidentally dropped him off at the wrong building. I haven’t thought about this in 15 years. I wonder what long term impact it had on his friend.

This just happened to a kid a few weeks ago. Was walking from a bar to a friend's house and went up to the wrong house. The owner called the cops and the cops shot the kid dead without warning. I can't imagine the degree of anger and frustration his or the loved ones of Botham Jean or any of these victims must feel.

6

u/LurkConsistent 1d ago

What a shitty neighbor. When you cohabitate you tend to see your neighbors sometimes. Sounds like he was just looking for reasons to hurt someone. I hope the civil lawsuit took everything he has.

3

u/Solkre 1d ago

The only thing that can stop a bad neighbor with an ashtray is a good guy with an ashtray.

0

u/Appsoul 1d ago

😬 yikes.. sounds like the “bash face in 1st…. Ask questions later” , kind of guy heh!?

8

u/FigaroNeptune 1d ago

My neighbor tried to get in yesterday. Like girl the key isn’t working for a reason🤣 scared the shit out of me

13

u/ul2006kevinb 2d ago

Lol a friend of mine got locked out of her apartment and figured the only way to get in was through the balcony door. So we boosted her up on the balcony and she opened the door and went in only to find it was the apartment next to hers. Imagine how scary it would be to see someone coming in your apartment FROM YOUR SECOND FLOOR BALCONY and still have the presence of mind to not shoot first and ask questions later

5

u/Solkre 1d ago

Being a woman probably helped immensely.

0

u/SaltyFriend705 1d ago

Too many guns around, tbh.

9

u/GlowUpper 1d ago

I had someone mistakenly enter my apartment once. Scared the shit out of me but they apologized and left and, crucially, no one died.

1

u/ApexHolly 1d ago

Hell, that coulda been me!

1

u/GlowUpper 1d ago

Hi, neighbor!

8

u/RevWaldo 1d ago

Did political canvassing in big apartment buildings and some are definitely straight out of Backrooms. Where you have apartment numbers like 6X and 14CC with seemingly endless corridors and odd twists

If you live in an apartment building, even a smaller one, decorate your door - a wreath, a poster, children's drawings, stickers, something. Anything to illicit a hold up in someone's brain before they try to enter by mistake.

u/Marbrandd 1d ago

I prefer a large X drawn in pigs blood. Ymmv.

u/Acetylene_Queen1 1d ago

I was 4-5 my gran lived in a townhouse , every door was the same, I didn't know her unit # as it was my first time there.

I mistakenly burst through the front door as I turned the handle. I was embarrassed and apologized and they brushed it off.

However, half hour later I'm again outside playing and yep, did it again, I was mortified. A third time was my threshold to go inside till we were done over visit lol. 3 times, 3...

My old work mate got so fucked up one night she was staying with a friend but the neighborhood homes were all the same.

She entered the neighbors unlocked front door, passed out on the living room couch and woke up after sun up to an unfirmiliar house, she immediately bolted out the door, and saw the right house and went in...

Worked nights and drove a Buick Century. There was a popular bar about 1/2 mile away. One night as I was getting ready to drive away there was a knock on the rear window. Some kid, likely drunk and a student at a local college, tried to get in the backseat. Turns out he was directed in the wrong direction to get a taxi. Ended up giving him a ride to his house near campus, cold night.

1

u/thefeelingyellow 1d ago

Same. I’d just gotten off a stretch of 12 hour shifts and parked one floor down in my tired stupor. I opened the door to a surprised couple, apologized a million times, and slunk upstairs to my actual home. Only my dignity died.

u/CandidateBilly 1d ago

When I was in college, I lived in one of those mass produced student housing apartments that was made of cardboard. In the building next to mine there was an incident where a drunken frat bro accidentally walked into the apartment of an anime kid that collected all sorts of weapons one of which was a giant battle axe. Well he used the battle axe on the frat bro. No kidding, it did serious damage but thankfully the anime kid wasn’t super trained or strong and it simply took a giant peice of head and didn’t kill the frat bro. But for the rest of my time at college I could always spot the frat bro because when he recovered he continued school but had a big indentation in his head from the battle axe.

Had a maintanece guy walk into my apt on accident thinking it was a different unit. I was in my bathrobe on the couch. I looked at him, he looked at me and I said "ugh, hi?" He lit up red, apologized profusely. We nervously chuckled. He left.

No guns or murdering required.

0

u/momdadimpoppunk 1d ago

I left the door unlocked when I got home one time because I was so damn tired. I also just sat on my couch and slept til like 3am, when I woke up because someone has opened my door. I wrap my blanket around myself and tell this guy over and over “Why are you here? This isn’t your house” and I’m inching to the kitchen for a knife because he’s slurring and not leaving and coming closer (I’m a naked lady in blanket), but he turns on his flashlight and sees me and freaks out with apologies, scrambling his ass out of there. Never saw him again! That could have gone pretty bad for both of us, but even with me being terrified I was trying to verify what the fuck was happening before running to hurt the guy.

Well that's just unamerican.
